I HAVE BEEN A PHILLIES FAN FOR 56 YEARS. WHAT A PLEASURE TO LISTEN TO THE GREATEST BROADCASTERS IN HISTORY-THE GREAT HARRY KALAS AND THE GREAT RITCHIE ASHBURN. GOD BLESS THEM BOTH!
I miss these guys dearly, just as I miss my dad who went to join them in heaven last April. As a lifelong Phillies fan, it's oddly comforting to imagine my father watching the current heroics of Ryan, Chase, J. Roll, Placido, Jason, Shane, Raul, Chooch, Cole, Doc Hallyday, Roy O., Domonic, and the rest of our amazing team from up above -- cloud-side -- with Harry + Whitey . . .
I remember this so well! This game was on my 14th birthday...the only gift I wanted was for a Phillies World Series. As it turned out, I got my wish! Miss you Harry and Whitey.
great.. thanks for posting.. its amazing seeing that wphl bumper after 28 years.. brings back the same emotions.. and the sponsors - lol - gino's. remember them?
Harry Kalas has so much in his voice. I would not think it is the same without him. I don't really like watching baseball cause it is kinda slow to me but my Brother watched every game and so did my x husband and I became accustomed to the voice and it is sad to know he won't be heard anymore. Kind of special memory to me the sound of his voice.
I HAVE BEEN A PHILLIES FAN FOR 53 YEARS AND THIS GAME IS THE MOST EXCITING GAME I HAVE EVER SEEN. THE PHILLIES PERFORM THE BEST WHEN THEIR BACKS ARE AGAINST THE WALL.
(The Late) Sportscaster Harry Kalas did his job quite professionally as a Phillies Commentator!! Here's To Him!! I salute you!! Rest In Peace -- Harry Kalas!! A Brilliant 6!!
one correction on your intro comments, Rollo. The Phillies broadcasters were not allowed to broadcast the World Series back then--even on radio. Harry and Richie had to watch the '80 WS with the rest of us. Some years later, Harry reenacted the final out but he did not make the call of Tug's strikeout of Willie Wilson live. He was never able to broadcast live that "The Phillies are World Champions of baseball!" until this past October.
I was 16 during this LCS, which was the greatest 5-game LCS of all time. I remember having a "George" card from Girard Bank - the predecessor of the MAC (now STAR) ATM card. To this day, "nobody bakes a cake as tasty as a Tastykake." Is it Frank's? Thanks! (for many years, I had an old Frank's soda machine) Everybody went to Gino's, because Gino's was the place to go! They were the only place in the Philly area to get Kentucky Fried Chicken, and they had great burgers in their own right.
@jfayiii - Gino's is back, and just celebrated their first anniversary in October 2011 under the same Gino Marchetti leadership. They started in King of Prussia, their former corporate hometown, and in the first year, opened stores in Towson, MD as well as Bensalem. They're still expanding, too. However, their cheapest burger is now north of $4.
If you read closely, you'll see that I did mention the word "simulcast" in my blurb. My earliest memories watching baseball on TV go back to 1981. I remember ABC's coverage of the Yankees-Dodgers World Series that year also being aired over WPIX. Their announcers (Rizzuto, Messer, White) did a brief pre-game before tossing it over to the ABC team. Two stations broadcasting the same feed -- that's a simulcast. I hadn't known that local radio was blacked-out, but it all changed in '84.
I love seeing clips like this. MLB can be dicks about people posting MLB footage, but they don't do anything with 98% of the footage they own. They rarely show full games anymore on MLB network, they cut them down to one hour blocks so that they have more time for their thousands of clip shows that show basically the same stuff over and over. I'm not a Phillies fan, but I love being able to see Harry Kalas, I just wish there were a lot more clips like this on UA-cam.
I forgot (also was limited by UA-cam's 500-character limit) - on the back of Tastykake trucks were bumper stickers that said, "This Truck Equipped With Tasty Breaks". Some of the older Tastykake trucks still have those stickers.
I remember that I was at the Valley Forge Music Fair with my parents during this historical game. When we arrived home, I was able to see the last two or three innings. Do you remember the Greg Gross bunt?
Yeah, It's a little pricy. I went there a few weeks ago visiting my hometown and I got a Gino's Giant. EXCELLENT! Worth every penny. First time i had one since 1981(?).
Dear Harry and Whitey, Please send down a blessing for our Phillies and help them beat the Dodgers again! God bless you guys! (It aint the same without you)
if you buy the 1980 world series box set, you get the entire game five of the NLCS championship produced by Channel 17. I have it, it's great! You can get it off the phillies website or at CBP...
I always thought that was the dumbest rule ever. Not allowing your teams announcers to broadcast their games in the World Series. Just stupid. Thank god Harry got to broadcast a series and the Phillies won it before his untimely passing in 2009. I'm a Reds fan and it would have pained me not to be able to have heard Marty and Joe call the games on the radio.
I know a year or two ago I was watching this entire game 5 with this broadcast crew on youtube. Now I can't find it, was it taken down? Does anyone know where it went?
Miss the Phillies and I miss the greatest baseball logo in history, IMHO! Please bring it back the way Bud brought back the old logo, and maybe even the Expos and the 2009 World Series because Arod et. al. cheated!!!
The rest of the WPHL-TV broadcast of this game (excluding the opening) can be seen here:

Two of the voices of my childhood. I miss these guys.
Harry and Whitey - the greatest announce team in the history of MLB.
I HAVE BEEN A PHILLIES FAN FOR 56 YEARS. WHAT A PLEASURE TO LISTEN TO THE GREATEST BROADCASTERS IN HISTORY-THE GREAT HARRY KALAS AND THE GREAT RITCHIE ASHBURN. GOD BLESS THEM BOTH!
RIP Harry Kalas,Richie Ashburn & Andy Musser, we miss you all!
Don’t forget about the recent loss of Tim McCarver
God bless Whitey...I love how Harry wants to pull the mic away on several occasions but keeps it in front of Richie so he can continue to ramble on
I miss these guys dearly, just as I miss my dad who went to join them in heaven last April. Man, that Gino's promo brings back the memories!
I remember this so well! This game was on my 14th birthday...the only gift I wanted was for a Phillies World Series. As it turned out, I got my wish! Miss you Harry and Whitey.
Whitey's baseball instincts were right on....predicting what kind of game would be game 5.
Girard Bank ... thats a blast from the past
How about Gino's?
i was 9 for this game and remember watching games on channel 17,this brings back memeories, lol, thanks
great.. thanks for posting.. its amazing seeing that wphl bumper after 28 years.. brings back the same emotions.. and the sponsors - lol - gino's. remember them?
This series was one of the best I have ever watched.. I was 18 and thought I was gonna have a nervous breakdown it was so crazy and intense
What a classic clip, thanks for the post and the memories!!!
I heard this was the greatest playoff series of all time, would’ve given anything to be in the booth with those guys
I was glued to the TV and radio for every game. I’ll never forget it. I was in sixth grade. 😄
And 42 years later, both teams are in the World Series. Who would've thunk at the time?

excellent. Brings back memories of watching the Phils on channel 17.

I remember clearly where I was watching this series when it happened. I was 9 years old and on my grandma's bed watching it.
Growing up in NYC sometimes I’d be able to pick up Philly channel 17 by putting my TV on ch 4 and the VCR on ch 17
WOw,,,,shed a tear...thanx for this...
The theme is so connected to me and my childhood. It feels serious.
Thanks for posting mainly becasue I never saw the opening. I don't know why they didn't show the opening on the 25th anniversary DVD.

No broadcasters could EVER match these two guys!

ua-cam.com/video/9mKKuvxRqP0/v-deo.html I know it's not Kalas and Ashburn but it's game 5.
❤
What about Gino's? IMO, they had the best burgers out of any of the fast food chains.
Now I want a Gino giant
@saml760 - Andy Musser is alive and well as of October 2011.
AshburnStadium and then he died from chronic heart disease 3 months after your post so he was not “well.”
Phillies Fans.
Check out the "Phiilies Dream Scene" on UA-cam -
Type "Phillies Dream Scene" into your search bar.
Has anyone got a copy of the Larry Bowa-Dallas Green meltdown against the Braves on Aug 24 1981?.
Why no volume???
@doug3esq I remember listening to harry and rich do the world series..Im almost certain of it..
Miss the Phillies and I miss the greatest baseball logo in history, IMHO! Please bring it back the way Bud brought back the old logo, and maybe even the Expos and the 2009 World Series because Arod et. al. cheated!!!
