is the tension number different for the various machines?

What I have found is that for most longarm machines with the M-bobbin (larger size bobbin), the number to use with all threads is about 200 - 250 as a baseline, maybe adjusting a little up or down for the machine. Machines with the L-bobbin (smaller bobbin), the number range is 100-150. Again, this is the baseline to start with adjusting a little up or down for the individual machine.

Why does my top thread keep breaking on my long arm

Could be a number of reasons. Is it top thread? If so, often if top tension is too tight top thread may hreak. Loosen the bottom bobbin tension, then adjust top tension to balance.
