A fair verdict Matt. I have a Tesla Model Y (Long Range) and have learned that 1) in the right circumstances (ability to charge at home, tax incentives as a company car etc) electric cars are a fantastic, no brainer daily driver and I won't be going back and 2) they just aren't performance cars. As quick as my Model Y is, I'm glad I didn't bother getting the performance version because the acceleration is silent, easy and not thrilling once you get used to it. MG is going to cause big waves in the EV market, and getting a little sneak peak at some future models...... it will be an exciting future for MG.

This is surely the ultimate family runaround. Larger estate for the children and longer drives at weekends. Xpower for shorter hops. It may not suit someone who considers any twisting B-road a racing opportunity, but that won't move the needle on sales figures.

I also want something which can take some cargo and/or a bike rack for summer jonts out. The original MG4 EV was impressive, but had the same "runabout" suspension which didn't fit with the higher power. This one seems to address this making it possibly a viable option.

So buying a new car is helping the environment? Would of been better off keeping one of the older performance cars and would of most likely made money on it rather than loosing hundreds of pounds a month on a ev.
Brilliant for Welsh roads and British roads in general in the near future. I'm sure that zero to 20 mph time will be incredible, and it'll sit at 20 mph for most of the time in its lifetime .

Amazing price for such a powerful EV. I wonder how European car manufacturers will compete.
They don´t… I mean at price vice…
But they offer known brand name. It is something.
…er, by making cars that don’t look shit???
They are struggling. And anyone who cares about Europe, will not buy this Chinese fake MG crap
By paying slave wages and no workers' rights? The total ignorance on here is infuriating. Of COURSE European manufacturers can't compete on price. There should be bloody huge import tariffs on these things.
Your argument is so lazy😂, the average wage is China is now over $4000 USD a month, they have better rights than many other countries, and more importantly, they retire at the age of 50.😂@@FTFLCY
Hey Matt. I generally agree with your verdicts. Not so much with this one. I reckon you should compare this MG to other electric cars rather than wasting so much time comparing it to ICE cars. Of course, the weight is different. It has a 65kwh battery pack rather than a fuel tank.
OK, been waiting for this review for ages, anyone else?
I love it how Matt rounds up the prices of vehicles of as much as 5,000£ like that amount of money is nothing.
Yeah, most people would round down £59,990 to £59,000. Matt just looks at the first digit and rounds that down to £50,000.
As a drivers car my old Fiesta ST and even Golf R were in a different league. Electric cars are heavy, one-dimensional, lack feel and demand very little from the driver. I will have an electric car as my daily from now on, but I dream of the day when I can afford to have a second car just for fun. Whatever it is it will be light, manual and petrol powered!
Test a model 3 performance and see what you think about that, it might bridge the gap to the small sports cars. Much more performance and cornering capability than the model y long range. Still quite big though.
@@EwanM11being fast is not the same as having fun, a mx5 Miata is 500x more fun than a model 3 performance, the Tesla is capable but just not fun and not involving

@@purwantiallan5089 about as heavy as a bmw m3. Modern cars are heavy generally.
Yeah I had a Model 3 (to be fair it was a Long Range not Performance) and it did drive better than the Y but not a huge difference. Both cars lack feel through the steering, make you feel insulated from the drive and dont have anything for your left foot or arm to do (relative to good petrol sports cars). Don't get me wrong, the Model 3 in particular is really impressive - tonnes of grip on the PS4S's and loads of instant shove with a well sorted chassis. Very quick down a road, but I just didn't feel as engaged as I used to in my little Fiesta ST all those years ago. @@EwanM11
I have been looking for an EV for sometime and have recently test drove a variety of them. BMW, VW, SEAT, SKODA etc.
When a co worker suggested the MG4 I chuckled....I am not buying a MG 🙄😂!
Anyway, to satisfy a niggling curiosity, I test drove the Xpower....Loved the Xpower ❤! ordered the Xpower!!😁
Not just for the acceleration, although it is great fun 😁, but the whole package is very well put together. So much tech as standard that will cost thousands as 'optional extras' with other brands.
MG is going to cause big waves in the EV market, and getting a little sneak peak at some future models...... it will be an exciting future for MG.

These cars top out long before your amg hits its stride, electric cars always quote the 0-60mph times but never the top speed! I was surprised how slow tesla model 3 are when they are on the move, my stage 1 340i never lost to a single one because they run out of steam

Agree.
This is surely the ultimate family runaround. Larger estate for the children and longer drives at weekends. Xpower for shorter hops. It may not suit someone who considers any twisting B-road a racing opportunity, but that won't move the needle on sales figures.

The original MG4 EV was impressive, but had the same "runabout" suspension which didn't fit with the higher power. This one seems to address this making it possibly a viable option.
I can't wait to see one of these go round the ring. All it wants is a decent set of tyres and pads and maybe some new springs.
New everything. They won’t do it. It’s only getting fame from drag races. Everyone will tire from a quick straight line blast after 5 mins. Then wish they had an actual car. Not some Chinese replica.

This is not a performance car or a hot hatch, it’s an EV. There are no other performance enhancements whatsoever, it just has dual motors.
@@Osmosis909 I'm not saying it's going to be refined or well balanced or anything, it's just a shedload of torque and power, in a relatively small package. heavy compared to a hot hatch, but not compared to modern sports saloons. You say "they won't do it" - maybe MG won't but Misha for example would probably love to lap one, as he has done for various Tesla's and the Polestar.
You claim this has no performance enhancements but honestly, with a pad change and some proper sticky tyres, I bet this does, as per the title, slay plenty of supercars - why the hate? I think it's pretty incredible consumers get access to 400+ hp in a completely daily driveable package for £35k, especially when you consider an equivalent powered piston car is likely to be double
If you put it in custom drive mode keep power in eco, all other settings in sport and turn off esc you have a 200bhp rwd lsd that will give you much more range as well ! Thats the settings i use daily... Press of a button for traffic light gp.

£36,000 for this really powerful 0-60 mph MG hatchback is super amazing! However, I so think MG should make an EV to rival touring sports cars. I think they should turn their new MG5 EV, which is like an estate, into a fast estate by giving it the same power and 4WD.
