I like that they humanize the metrocops during the start of the game, you can hear them laughing at what citizens say and even conversing with eachother.
I really love the aesthetics of the Beta. Is giving me goosebumps, like vibes of Deus Ex, Metro, Time Shift, The Conduit, Bioshock and all those games during the early 2000's till late 2000's era. :')
This is way better looking than half life 2 man. Also the idea the resistance probably has soviet era property being shipped into the city makes sense.
The SPAS12 is better depicted. Valve have watered down that gun in the vanilla game by only putting six cartridges in an eight tube for some reason (unlike in HL1), the double shot retaken from the DB shotgun from the Doom games (that was excusable during the 90s, but not in the 2000s at a time we can find better info on such gun on the internet), while we have to wait the Raising the bar gamemode to finally see a better version of the SPAS finally with a semi-auto firemode! I could die in peace now that's also super cool how we can use Alyx machine-pistol and the Winchester of Grigori, a variety of guns doesn't hurt since how ridiculously small the weapon selection was back in vanilla HL2
0:14 As someone who went through the bullshit of grad school to get a PhD, I am personally hurt that the G-man doesn't address Gordon as Doctor Freeman. He earned that PhD, dammit! 😢
Do you really think we have to stick to this old rules? Do you think obtaining PhD is harder than being a Lead Architect at Google, for example? Do we have to address such people "Architect Freeman" all the time? Just because they worked a lot? Does it really matters or just somebodies ego hurts? Never understood it even when I was trying to obtain PhD as well. Like I get it that it sounds nice, but is it really that important?
While this is a faithful recreation of what the beta of Half Life 2 could've been, I shudder to imagine what it would've looked like, let alone played like, if it was released in the state it was. It's probable it wouldn't have been as memorable or hell, we probably would've gotten Half Life 3. Because Half Life 2 in its state was so good, people went through painstaking efforts to make *THIS*, which is well made. Lesser games wouldn't get such love.
Holy fucking shit... After all these years we're finaly here, this looks fantastic! And Ravenholm: Oh my god that skybox... But I don't think level-design here is like OG one, but still looks pretty good. I really wish I can see that test-build sunset for the first time again...
I love this mod but my only gripe is that Barney's VA in this sounds like his retail counterpart hadn't even hit puberty yet in comparison, plus it doesn't even sound like him in the first place anyway. At least Kleiner actually sounds somewhat like Kleiner, but Barney desperately needs a new voice. which i hope he gets during a later Division update
Okay I'm about a third of the way though and this is INFINITELY better than HL2 in almost every regard so far.... UPDATE: Okay I've seen the whole thing now and it's not infinitely better... The City 17 re-imagining and the worldbuilding early in the game was absolutely incredible -- I didn't even mind that it went on for a full half-hour because the city was so beautifully detailed. The problem is the game loses a lot of steam at about the halfway point and I found it difficult to stay interested. A bit more variety in weapons and enemies was sorely lacking, and the game just kind of completely forgot about its storyline as it went on... Mossman hints at some supercool secret underwater base, but it's never mentioned again? And maybe it's by design, but the Combine seem a lot less imposing in this retelling of the story. Also, where are the NPC citizens in the second half of the game?! I really appreciated the fact that you already see them fighting and having a bit of success against the Combine using hit-and-run guerilla tactics instead of waiting for the Chosen One to lead them, but there was nothing built on that foundation. And Ravenholm looked a lot more realistic, but dragged on for far too long -- Sorry, but waiting four hours into gameplay to get your first shotgun is a big no-no. But these are minor gripes... Maybe add a few tweaks but overall this is an impressive and well-thought creation...
Also, extra credit to the creator(s) for showing some REAL time progression... Dusk to night to dawn to late morning, then an assumed "rest" at Black Mesa East then late afternoon to dusk to night...
Do keep in mind this is an unfinished mod called Raising the Bar: Redux. The underwater base is much later into the game, this is currently about 40% done. Storyline picks up in next area, the Depot/Prison, with more weapons and enemies too.
That's my other question... At the end of the first half-life, nobody would have known what happened to Gordo or where he was... So how would they have known to expect him on this day ten years later??
They didn’t. They were surprised that he suddenly returned decades later and because he was known as the rescuer of Black Mess (rescuing scientists, security guards, and eventually himself), they spread the word that Gordon is back.
Did you have to do anything special to get your pickup icons to not be cut off? My hud seems very small and the icons for items when I pick them up are extremely cut off and nearly not visible.
If Valve truly does make Half Life 3, I truly hope they add The Cremator in it cause I honestly think they look badass! Especially to wield a flamethrower. Maybe even make the Flamethrower a new pick-up item as well!
