I'm from Oakland and roughly the same age as Sheila E. For many years while I was a kid, the nightclub 6 or 8 blocks from my house had a sign saying Pete Escovedo and Band performing tonight. As a teenager, it changed to say Pete and Sheila Escovedo and Band. Being underage, I never got to see them perform and while Sheila E must have been going to school the same time as I was, it must have been in some other neighborhood in the area as i never saw or met her. I was still thrilled to see her have success and to hear her on the radio, especially as it was a really good song.

Sheila E. is actually a multi-instrumentalist although she mainly known as a percussionist and drummer. She's played drums for Prince on several of his tours. Not sure what all instruments she can play, but I know she can play guitar too. Most of the musicians from back tended to be able to play many instruments. Special shout out to Eddie M., who is the guy playing the saxophone here and has been a mainstay with Sheila her entire career. You guys should check out the album version of this song, it's an extended version that is 9 minutes long.

Interviewer: What do you call them then? Prince: Friends, they go out of theyr ways to buy my music,go to my concerts....they are my friends!) And it was through Prince i discovered Sheila-E,they both collabed together at concerts (pretty much part of his band at one point),i believe she also signed up with Princes own record label when he went independent. And this is by far one of my favourite songs! And between us,man did i crush on this lady. Prince was swarmed by beautiful women!
Do you want a video with them together? Prince - U Got The Look. Its actually with Sheila-E, Sheena Easton & Cat Glover (his dancer) plus many others. There you can see why i crushed on her,the way she comes walking beside the others. LAWD HAVE MERCY! You can hear alot of Prince in her songs, the same with Apollonia and Apollonia Six. Apollonia also had a soft voice, maybe not the best singer out there lol,but Prince managed to turn her into a musician for awhile. Not only in Purple Rain the movie lol. Well in 1984 Sheila E became a Prince protege. He made her over. This song was originally a demo for Apollonia 6. Prince is playing all instruments accept for the horns(Larry Williams) and percussions(Sheila E) Jill Jones and Prince background vocals and David Coleman(cello)
