The fun way to "grocery shop" in Manila is to visit the local market, aka the palengke. This is an indoor and outdoor marketplace where you can buy fresh produce, fruits, meat, and almost anything else, for a cheap price! This is the local Filipino way in the Philippines!

Palengke is a noun. Filipinos usually add prefixes/suffixes (like ma-, na-, nag-, mag- etc) to a noun to transform it into a verb. That's why "Palengke" turned in to "Mamalengke" (go to the market and buy things). Now if you're asking why it's not "Mapalengke", the reason is "Mamalengke" much easier to pronounce than the former. :)
More examples:
"Sabon" (soap) >> "Magsasabon" (wash with soap)
"Hapunan" (dinner) >> "Maghahapunan" (Eat dinner)
"Sigarilyo" (cigarette) >> "Magsisigarilyo" >> "Maninigarilyo" (both are 'smoke cigarette'. It's just to show you the transformation of the words. :D)
Just know that I love how you and Wil values learning tagalog. I just hate it when Filipinos who grow up here in PH can't even talk straight Filipino.
*who grew up here
That's why I sort of despise Erwan Heussaff. True, he didn't grow up here, but he's on TV and has been here for 5+ years. Buti pa si Solenn at Wil, at least kahit barok yung Tagalog, nagt-try.
Karl Torento erwann actually grew up here. he was my classmate at euro international school. I guess he just didn't speak tagalog at home.
palengke - noun
mamamalengke - future tense
namamalengke - present tense
namalengke - past test
haley happy to hear from you that you are enjoying your stay here in the philippines. . God bless
Hi Haley, I always watch your vlogs during my day off from work, its nice to see you're having good time in the Philippines, enjoying pinoy foods, and beautiful beaches. thanks for the videos.
That was cool! Thanks for taking us a long. Reminds me of the cool experiences I've had out there, shopping with my wife. 👍🏾💯
Thank you, Haley. I really enjoy your videos and watch them everyday. I especially liked this one. You are very talented young lady and thanks for your interesting and entertaining videos. I like when you speak Tagalog - it's funny!
Hey Kiana! Thanks for watching : ) Where are you watching from? (I love hearing where viewers are watching from!) : )
Haley Dasovich I live in Moiliili, a part of Honolulu close to Waikiki. I was born in Cebu and still have a house there close to Mactan bridge and Lapu-lapu. I go to the Philippines every three months. Pag ayo-ayo , day!
+Kiana Foster Omggg you speak bisaya?! 😂
of course! Now I am trying to learn Tagalog
Cebuano ako😲 hi😊😊😊
As always, great vlog Haley....my 6-year old son started vlogging when he was here in Dubai but it came to a halt when they transferred to the Philippines for good...
anyhow, keep them vlogs coming...God Bless you. :)
Watching your experiences takes me back when I would visit PI. Palengke trips with my Lola and the yayas were always an overloaded to my senses! The Jeepney rides were a hoot! My Lola would not permit me to hangout of the Jeepney... She would do the lip thing and give verbal warnings. Enjoy all of it! Great memories! Thanks!
Hello Haley .. Omg I feel in love on your blog I'm just started my vlog and your my inspiration Haley .. Thank you for being awesome ..
I love people like yo speaking tagalog, because it shows that you are not a racist and it seems like you are down to earth, both of you and your brother. I enjoy your videos, it inspire me to find out my old videos that just hidden for years because I don't know what to do with it, but since this kind was trending now a days, i decided to make it like blogs.
Haley you are fortunate the lady was nice and caring to assist you. thanks for sharing.
Haley...love this video...brought back a lot of memories for me. I used to love going to the palenke with my mom. Usually in Cubao Farmer's Market. Thank you! There is nothing like it here in Maine.

So excited to visit Philippines again. We are going to Subic Bay for some island hopping. Love your channel.
Use the Chinese word for monosodium glutamate, vetsin. It is widely used in the Philippines. And sinigang is much nicer when you make it with fresh sampaloc (tamarind). Its really easy Hales, you should vlog a cooking lesson about making it fresh!!!
good idea! I def need to do that.
Hi Haley area you living in Rockwell?
Hi Haley! I'm a fan from NYC. I love watching your and Wil's vlogs. It makes me miss Philippines more!

Love watching your vlogs girl! I haven't been in the Philippines for 12 years and watching yours and Wil's vlogs have made me miss it more and more. I really need to visit there soon! Also, i'd probably get nose bleed too when i go back, my tagalog have been a mixture of english and also ilonggo (most of my family here in canada are visayans) so it's just a trifecta of language goodness!
Watched this just now, Haley. Wow, you made going to the palengke look sosyal, haha! Love this vlog of yours, so cute! 👍

Hi Haley,, proud of youuuuu""
Keep up ,, steel watching vlog ,, and waiting more
Just want to remind you Careful in walking in the Street,
Filipino who recently moved to the states here. I have the opposite reaction to pedestrian walking in the states. Since I grew up in the Philippines, I just learned how to deal with Filipino drivers and got accustomed to looking both ways before crossing the street and waiting for cars to pass, walking only when the road is clear. This causes unnecessary delay for me now that I'm in the states because both of us (me and us drivers) end up yielding to each other.
Neil Bantoc Hi! i hope you check my vlogs too! tnx.. 😄
Neil Bantoc don't u have the pedestrian lane ung may walk sign dito meron kasi sa vegas just curious
elmira abegail rogado meron naman, pero mostly nasa intersections. I'm talking mostly about the crosswalks between intersections, usually walang stop light kapag ganun.
I commend you on uploading so fast!!!! Always enjoy your vlogs girlllll
Hahahahaha! I laughed so hard when you're getting confused with Tagalog words! haha Haley you're so cute!!! ♥
Hi Haley, shout out here from Calgary, Alberta Canada. I started watching your Vlog and I truly love going to palengke too..😀😉
great blog miss haley i really enjoy watching looking forward for more :)
Wow ! Haven't been back since 2000. Great job.
Iba ka tlaga haley idol na tlaga kita your so amazing your not maarte!!!
Love your videos Haley! I enjoy watching them whenever I have a chance. Totally different perspective of what other people says about the Philippines. As a Fil-Am born and raised in Hawai'i, I feel the need to experience the P.I. sometime next year. It's a shame I can't speak Tagalog, but I can understand gestures whenever my Lola talks to me. You know, like point her lips, move her hands, and speak loud. LOL!
LOL!!!
if you want to cook sinigang without MSG using powder mix Haley, just buy sampalok or kamias this 2 fruits/veggies are natural producing sour flavor for cooking sinigang dishes here sa Pilipinas.. no MSG! ask miss Remy about sampalok at kamias
I love your shades Haley! Where can I get that?! 😍😍😍 your vlogs are getting better and better as well as your Tagalog 🙂 keep it up!!!
Haley! Palengke is the noun for the word market while "mamalengke" is the verb form of that noun. Here in the Philippines sometimes we change the first letter in the noun, which oftentimes is a vowel, into "m" when we transform it into a verb (which is mostly acceptable in the Filipino language). Then we repeat twice the first 2 letters of the transformed verb. which in this case is "m-a". I supposed you can consider the first letter replacement to "m" into a prefix of that verb. That's how it's mostly done here.
e.g.
Pahinga
noun. "rest."
Mamahinga
verb. "to rest."
thanks for bringing me back home :) this is my hometown market
Always a great experience, going to the local market hehe. Funny to see people in the background striking a pose on camera :P You already make me scared to learn Tagalog Haley hahaha, it'll take some time.
started watching ur videos since yesterday.. I enjoyed.. keep uploading
wow! you're brave for going to the palengke with your camera! but thanks for doing so, awesome vlog! new subbie here
Ate Haley you got the 50.4% editing skills like tsong wil!!! Go Go Go!!!
Halley, missing the spa, home service, shopping at Market-Market Mall, H&M Mall, Green Hills, Farmers Market the flee markets ( TuTuBan, Divisoria, etc) restaurant, Bakery-deserts, missing PI ...
Haley you can still cook sinigang, just tell Remy to buy lots of fresh Sampalok :) pampaasim yan. Great alternative for the Sinigang mix
I did this once, went to a public market with my brother and nieces and I'm out within 5 mins. I'm even wearing shoes. Wow!, you are really brave and adventurous. Playing Frogger?! I call it Mad Max...100 points for an Expat :)
good job Haley 😍
this is awesome
@hayleydasovich this vlog is really helpful,I've been living in New Nealand and I'm about to go back in the Philippines soon,i used to live in rockwel at hidalgo building,,i noticed that there's so much changes in the area already, this vlog is like a heads up for me,,,thanks!
fresh sampalok and kalamansi work best for sinigang (without the msg powder flavoring, etc)
Take care and Stay beautiful haley! Your tagalog is getting better! Love you! ♥️♥️
Enjoying all your blog ms. Haley
Haley! you are hardcore. Vlogging in a public jeepney and going to Guadalupe wet market and vlog about the place and the people. I wish I can do that. LOL! Just be careful because there are a lot of crooks around. Most people are nice but it's always better to be mindful of what or who's around you. Great vlog always.
WOW HALEY!! You can totally speak Tagalog now! So proud of youuuuuu. Also, Bilib ako sayo coz u still vlog while inside the jeepney. I cant do that coz people staring are killing me!!!
Also, be careful haley in vlogging in public places most especially around Metro Manila (Guadalupe included) because there are a lot of snatchers everywhere :(
Stephany hahaha so true
Hi Haley!! Love your bali vlogs. Hope u could do a video about travelling 101!!
ure doing great on ur tagalog! keep it up. It's always hard to learn another language, but ure doing so well!
Hi haley!! Palengke is the place. Mamalengke or namalengke is the action word.
Oh my gosh, you n your bro are so addicting to watch! Lol. It's interesting to me seeing how Philippines 🇵🇭 is , since I've pretty much grown up here in LA more than half my life. Pero Marunong akong magtagalog ☺️😉👍🏻👍🏻.
Hi Haley, you can still have Sinigang without the mix. Just boil tamarind (sampaloc) in hot water for the broth. Also use fish sauce (pats) for flavour. Hope this helps.
I used to pass by that market on my way home. Good job you survived!
Hey Haley! Love all your vlogs! 😊
You can use the sampaloc fruit for your sinigang instead of the mix with msg.
Omg! Your Frogger reference... 😂😂😂😂. That's a game from my childhood era. 80's. I'm surprised you would even remember. Lol
I'm enjoying to watch your videos, thanks Haley,,,yes tell your cook not to use MSG, use fresh sampalok for sinigang and a little bit of rock salt not iodize salt.....
Marami kasi akong kumain dahil nag-eehersisyo ako nang madalas, which translates "I eat a lot because I workout (exercise) a lot!" :) Nice!
Keep it up haley... Magagandang video at magaling ka na magtagalog.. I hope u understand that hehe love you haley👍👍
Did, you know that the word Palengke is Mexican in origin? It spread to the Philippines during the era of the Viceroyalty of New Spain.
Hi Haley, you can boil fresh tamarind fruit , strain to just get the juice for sinigang.
My hometown is apparently getting the first Jollibee in Canada...i'm so pumped, I hear its delicious.
Palengke Diaries ...I love it Haley...you should do more Palengke and Mall Diaries.....oh yeah..mahal kita ;) ...i love fried tilapia =D
you could use 3 lemons instead of the sinigang mix. It suprisingly works
You can buy tamarind paste(in bottle) in large grocery store like SM, Rustan's etc. or you can do the traditional way by boiling and filtering tamarind for your sinigang :)
when you got a shot of your feet when you got down from the jeepney, im like "girl, why?" hahaha charge to experience na lang Haley. love your vlog. i'm new to your channel btw. ❤
so pretty ♡ ♡ looking forward to meet you! stay safe and enjoy manila!
Ang ganda ni haley super.
Good to see you at the palengke para mamalengke. ☆♡☆
pag si haley nag tatagalog ang cute nya,,
wooow! last copy! iba ang King tsonggo!
Haley I used to live in makati and go to that market every 3 days! Just a tip! If youre going to a wet market in manila and want to buy the freshest meat and veggies! Go there so early at 5am! Bec thats when the veggies was freshly delivered from farm and when meat was just butchered before it go on display for selling or even you will still see fishes still alive so it is fresh! Hahaha! If u go to wet market mid day or afternoon the meat and fish is probably sitting there for many hours,
True! Plus, it's probably not as hot early in the morn'😊
true Marky D!
Mas gusto ko ang ganitong klase ng vlogs mo haley ☺
great video i love watching your blog its like im home salamat po
Hi, Haley :) I have been binge watching your vlogs since last week :) Love all of them! By the way, “palengke” is a noun but can also be used as a verb; hence, mamalengke. You used certain affixes like “ma” to form other Tagalog verbs. I have been teaching Tagalog as a foreign language in the U.S. since 2019, and I must say, Tagalog verbs confuse them a lot :) Salamat!
Hahahaha having fun watching some old vlogs of yours😁
wow i feel so proud of you haley nyahahahaha seeing you filming yourself in public places lol. i mean if it were me, i wont be able to film myself with those maaaaany people around me
Thank you it was fun going with you. Mamalengke--means you will be going. Namalengke---means you are done with your buying your provisions. You are doing alright🇨🇦🙏👍😊🌺💋👏❤️🇵🇭💐 At least you are trying. God bless you, my child.
Love this video. Brings ba k childhood memories. 🇦🇺
Hello hailey! New subscriber here from San francisco, CALIFORNIA. Loved your videos hun:)
Supportive sister indeed 😍 You're so cute Haleeeey!!!! 😘
Oh yeah! that sinigang mix...that's the one I grew up eating. until I started my healthy journey and saw the MSG. I'm still on the hunt for non-MSG mix. Loved your video!
use fresh sampaloc. It's better :)
This market is exactly the same as our market in Bali. so cool
Mamalengke = Present Tense
Palengke = Noun
Leo Paul Almazan mamalengke - go marketing; palengke - market
They're correct.
mamalengke basically is used as a verb, while palengke is the noun.
Leo Paul Almazan Actually it's future tense. Namamalengke is present tense.
mamalengke is = Mother(Mama)
Palengkke is = Father(Papa)
metacafester agree! It's a verb.....
I miss that place ! I used to go there with the yayas and eat, i love GM, that’s what they called it .
Haley im gonna try explaining the palangeke thingy to you .. lol idk if its gonna make sense but Im jst gonna give example .. for example palengke is a shop . and like what you do in a shop/groceries ( palengke ) is shopping which is mamalengke ..
i cnt explain it properly but i hope it make sense lol ... but another example is ... lakad which is walk and naglalakad is walking....sakay is ride and sasakay ako is like im gonna ride and nakasakay is riding . lol its complicated but youll get there... most of the time u jst add some words especially when its past tense . last example lol kain whicih is eat and kakain is going to eat and kumakain is eating..
see the difference ? lol ik its confusing but i hope it some how helped ... btw im a fan of you and your brother from the UK .. your brother actually is my inspiration to start my own youtube .. i love how he vlogs in public lol so confident ... which is nakakahawa ..
Palengke is a noun. Mamalengke is an action verb.
Marissa Rivera I was about to comment that because at the top no one ever rectified it lmao. But there u go gj
Haley, you need to add MA/MAG to make a common noun place into its verb form.
I think P is a special case here.
So palengke becomes mamalengke.
Same goes with pasyalan - Mamasyal
Haley needs to study more tagalog like her brother.
You can cook sinigang without msg using natural ingredients like sampalok or calamansi or tomatoes
