SICK Dominant 7th Jazz Lick You Need to Know [Great for Bebop]

Поділитися
Вставка
  • Опубліковано 10 вер 2016
  • This sick triadic jazz lick is easy to play but sounds really hip. If you know your basic major triads, you'll be able to play this line over dominant 7th chords in all of your favorite tunes. Definitely try this one in a bebop context (look for those ii-V-I 's). You'll be sounding like Parker and Coltrane in no time ;)

    I'm sure you don't need assurance in the value of what you're doing, BUT: thank you. I'm a violin player with average theory knowledge and jazz theory has always been mysterious to me. Your instructional pace is digestible and you always provide great chordal/real world context. New sub here. Keep it up!

    The way I think to make it easier is the major triad a whole step above from the II of the key. Hence, the III major triad. For me, thinking about the key makes it easier to transpose. Thank you Jeff, great video, helped me a lot!

    Awesome! I'm a trumpet player; just stumbled across the video. This is a much better explanation of the "altered' sound of the V in a a 2-5-1, which I've sort of been incorporating already, but this is a much better approach and wii aid my never-ending quest to not sound like a bozo in a jam session. Thank you.

    As a guitarist, playing a b9 13 chord is one of my favorites. I didn’t realize there was a triad there the whole time. As a side note, since you were leading that lick with a Dorian climb, you could think a Major chord a whole step up from the ii. What’s really odd about a Major III chord, is I’ve always associated it as a secondary dominant to the 6 or moving to the 4 ala “creep” or “someday my prince will come” it’s so odd to me that once you put the 5 in the bass it’s a killer resolution to 1.

    G7 + E = G7add13b9
    G7 + Eb = G7#9b13
    G7 + Bb = G7#9
    G7 + C# = G7b9#11

    I guess the question is where did the 5 eighth note pick up come from? The "first variation" sort of lets it gel a bit...but still not sure where it was built from. I get the minor 3rd below part, but then...the whole pick up motif is mysterious

  • @Mikedr55
    @Mikedr55 7 років тому

    Thanks for this. Lovely lick, which needs of course to be transposed into different keys. As with other commentators, I was and remain a little puzzled by your introduction of the F Dorian. Am I right in thinking that F Dorian has the same notes as Bb7 and EbMajor 7 and simply starts on a different tone? That means that if I were using your lick over, say, a 251 in CMajor, my 5th chord would go from G7 to E7 (minor third down) and I would then play D Dorian to lead into my E7 triad? Hope this makes sense and hope it's correct. Thanks again, Mike

    • @JeffSchneiderMusic
      @JeffSchneiderMusic  7 років тому

      You are right! Except you don't think of it as E7, just E Major!

    Another great video Jeff. Thanks for putting in the time to share.
    I may have asked this question before but when you are doing your vids you swap back and forth between concert and Eb keys. Do you have any tips on acquiring this skill or do you just get it over time, having to think "now, C is a M6 above Eb, or a m3 below and..." see, I've already got a headache!

    • @JeffSchneiderMusic
      @JeffSchneiderMusic  8 років тому +1

      It does come with time. The hardest part for me is fingering the alto sax keys while speaking the concert pitches. I like to think a minor third down instead of a major third up since it's a smaller interval. Hope that helps!

    • @ggauche3465
      @ggauche3465 8 років тому

      Yeah, thanks. When I started playing, I was always thinking in concert pitch, so it was hard to think in the transposed key. Now i am used to it and ONLY think in the notes as written, and it now confuses me to think in concert!

    • @cldavis33
      @cldavis33 7 років тому

      Right, the lick has the resolutions built in true, that's what's important. But I hear that b9 'sound' in there it's so cool, puts such great color in the line. That sound, that color is what we are after - and it can be thought of many ways, but it's really a nice thing isn't it?

    • @Osnosis
      @Osnosis 5 років тому

      Knowing notes is very helpful; however, the instruments are totally different. So, basics are the most important thing (long tones, scales, etc.)
