Dressage Fail: Grand Prix Dressage Freestyle Gone Wrong

- This Grand Prix dressage horse already had a feeling that 2020 was going to be a disaster and was calling for a hard no as Julio Cesar Mendoza Loor entered the Friday night freestyle at the Global Dressage Festival last season. Rosali was feeling a bit electric under the excitement of the lights and the crowd which led to a dressage disaster and an epic grand prix dressage freestyle fail.
As a true horseman, we do see Julio retire Rosali without completing the Grand Prix dressage freestyle, at which point he was required to hand walk the hot horse out of the dressage arena.
Most of the dressage disasters we have featured here on Dressage Hub have a lot to do with aggressive riding and a horse saying no. In a sudden flip of the switch we see a compassionate rider trying to calm a hot horse and leave the arena on a positive note, rather than continuing with the grand prix dressage freestyle to the detriment of the horse.
We are looking forward to seeing this combination back in the dressage ring for the 2021 season at the Global Dressage Festival. Especially after checking out the hind leg action of this horse when it was at its worst!

The title of this is misleading, should be "GP Dressage Fail Gone Right" because this is the exact way it should have been handled. I think we could have seen SO much worse if the rider hadn't stopped when he did, that horse was close to having a meltdown. Glad the rider was experienced and sensible enough to know to stop before it reached that point.
Yeah when your horse is offering piaffe when all you want is a halt you know he’s bursting out of his skin and needs a serious chill pill
That horse looked like it went lame.
I mean ok the horse was a bit nervous but I’ve seen meltdowns and this wasn’t it :) still the right choice for the horse to cancel so good horsemanship right there. I love how he treats his horse

I like how the rider knew to stop while he was a head to avoid a disaster, was gently petting him, then jump off and worked him in hand to help the horse stay focused on him. Excellent horseman!
Wonderful display of horsemenship. Loved how he even got off at the end and walked him out, not caring about anything other than reassuring the horse. Never once lost his patience. Wish we had more horsemen left like that.

Wasn't this horses' day. The rider did all the right things. I've never seen a rider dismount at this level. He clearly was trying to soothe this horse. Never showed anger or frustration. Gold star, as far as I'm concerned.
To me, after the rider dismounted, and a couple times in the ring when the rider attempted to pat his neck, the horse reacted as if he was expecting to get smacked.
@@lc285 no he didn’t he was just extremely wound up. The rider didn’t Pat his neck he ran his hand down the neck to try and soothe him. The jumpiness you might be referring to was in fact one horse ready to take flight and one rider trying to hold him to keep him safe. Dismounting was to also keep himself safe, but even with the rider on the ground the horse was on the verge of flight and it was essential the rider try to calm him and keep him in a walk. When a horse is spooked everything becomes scary to them and the last thing you want is a horse running “wild” in an arena with its reins hanging free etc it could end badly for the horse. I think the young man did a really good job of holding his own nerves and showing patience and understanding to his horse. I hope they were both ok afterwards and the horse didn’t have any lasting scars from his ordeal x

Julio Mendoza shows his excellent horsemanship, empathy, and professionalism in this video. It's clear that he cares a great deal about the welfare of his horses.
Shouldn't have been labeled as a disaster! I'm sure it felt like a train wreck, but horses are emotional animals. His rider handled it very well.
The test was a disaster, nothing was going right, but he stopped because he felt his horse wasn't right.
If you are reading this please remember that this is normal ,this happens to every horse and rider out there.

So true. I have left the arena mid test because it was just the right thing to do for my horse at the time and im sure it wont be last. I think this rider done a great job with everything that was happening.

I see a very “hot” and sensitive horse. Julio handled this with sensitivity and compassion. I don’t see a fail at all. Kudos to Julio!
Yeah, but I also see a horse, which salivates really hard and that means, that the mouthcloser is too thight. The horse can't swallow it's own saliva and also can't breath. Horrible to see.
But I agree. The rider acted really calm and nice.
@@Brunnenholz Horses salivate when flexion in the throttle area causes pressure which activates the slaivary glands. Or else because of a reaction to the chemicals in the bit.
@AMALYA SILVERBLATT of course. I know, that salivation is a result of an active mouth. But when the saliva comes out of the mouth, the mouthcloser is too thight, so the horse can't swallow it. And that's a fact. Normally, the horse swallow its saliva, but when mouthcloser is too thight, there is no option, the saliva comes out of the mouth. When this happens it's a sign that the horse also couldn't breath, because the mouthcloser is also wrapped around the sensitive, soft area of the nose airways. There ARE problems. You just have a little bit to know about anatomy.

@@Brunnenholz You have no idea what you are talking about. It is a nervous, hot and heavy horse. Drooling is quite normal when a horse is having almost a meltdown, which is clearly what is happening...
Horses have bad days too. Good that he bowed out. Just hope that behind the scenes he was as caring for the horse as he was in front of the crowd.
I would guess he is. If the horse were accustomed to rough, unfair treatment by him, it likely would have escalated its behavior when he was reaching up and stroking the head and neck, rather than being soothed.
I agree. Horses do not lie. This one was transmitting "I don't feel right" and the message was heard. Love the gentleness when dismounting...if the horse anticipated trouble I don't think the rider could have calmed...
Me too! I’ve seen some riders bow out with grace and understanding in front of the judges and spectators, and then thrash their horse round the warm up ring for hours until it’s practically on its knees when no ones watching.
I actually have worked for him and he's always kind to the horses, good days or bad days. He was incredibly patient

It sucks when these rides happen, but the rider handled it like a champ. Kinda makes me smirk: we know the audience is just trying to show their support by clapping, but they really aren't making things easier. Their hearts are in the right place, though. On the bright side, this is really helpful for amateurs to see that even experienced riders struggle. I've been watching the legs in the UK and riders will have their Oopsie days on it too--dropping their reins, messing their , falling out of piaffe into , etc, losing their spot to their music in the freestyle. It happens to everybody and while we feel bad for the riders, it is nice to know it's not just us who are struggling.
One of my first trainers said, "some days either horse or rider or both have forgotten which end of a horse goes forward. Best you can do is first try to work through it, but recognize when it's time to pat the horse and try again another day."
That is a true horseman. Well done. The fact he walked the horse out of the arena, talking to it and keeping it under control? That's a dressage success.
Amazing horsemanship right there. Tried to ride it out we all do that but when it wasn’t helping he stopped and once he was out he got off and hand walked him back good job to the rider we all get good days and bad horse and rider so great job for the rider for putting his partner first
The rider did the right thing to avoid his very nervous horse really falling apart. Hope he was that kind behind the scenes as well. It is very stressful to show at night with the audience so close to the arena as well. But no this wasn’t a disaster at all , but a learning experience for both! Thank
I'm not a horse trainer, but I do train dogs. So many people don't want to be "embarrassed" when their dog isn't performing well, so instead of de-escalating and taking a few steps back, they insist on pushing forward. Then they get bitten or something else bad happens. I don't know much about dressage, but I could see there was something going wrong in this horse's head. Good for this guy for doing the right thing and caring more about the horse than the performance.
This is a perfect example of a rider paying attention to his horse. He noticed his horse was becoming agitated and asked for music to stop and started rubbing his horses neck and telling him he's OK and to stop the routine. He did this with compassion and love not punishment 😃. Never ever punish the animal for being agitated.
I have had lessons and have done clinics with Julio. He truly has the horse’s best interest in mind! Professional and caring!

Julio Mendoza is a great trainer, rider, and person. Horses experience this kind of tension in the ring all the time. God bless Julio for his expertise and compassion. It is an intimidating experience with the lights, the crowd, and the loud music. He showed the ultimate professionalism.

Amazing rider, he showed us how to handle those difficult days calmly. It helps all riders to see our top athletes having the same experiences we have.
I've always known him to be an amazing horseman. Always very impressed when I see him work. Horses are the priority at his barn, so this is not surprising in the least. Maybe not the result they were both hoping for (that's definitely a talented horse) but he turned it into a teachable moment--for the audience and the horse!

Excelente rider following the safety procedures. I’m surprise no body noticed the horse was lame in the back right. Agreed this shouldn’t be named as a disaster it is a very well handle situation that happens all the time at any level of dressage. Congratulations to the rider.

Good for him for stopping when he did. That horse definitely has something bothering him which is most likely adding to him being so up or even frustrated. It looks to me like he was short stepping often on the right hind which leads me to consider a stifle problem. But, as many horse owners know, it can also come from another area in the body that looks like another issue. Hopefully the horse is treatable and go on with his career.

This was painful to watch. I'm glad the rider did excuse himself. I hope they either find a way for the horse to mature and enjoy showing, or accept the horse's limitations and excuse him from competition at such a high level of pressure.

As he is heading towards Exit, right before dismount - pay close attention to back, left leg from knee down to hock. Tendon? Possibly in hoof?? Something is hurting this horse. So glad he dismounted when he did.

Ha! I know exactly what that feels like! It’s also quite embarrassing when it happens. Pretty much the same thing happened with Frosty and I at state show. That and she nearly ran over the judge. Heh, should have been DQed.
Beautifully handled. It’s really hard to keep your cool and stay out of the horse’s mouth as much as you can. It’s a balancing act. Keep them from bursting forward in a bolt, and stay out of their mouth so that it’s not as triggering for the horse, and avoid tension so your horse doesn’t flip over backwards.
Some things to point out. After the cut off, when they asked the horse to piaffe, that was asking the horse to spend his energy in a productive way. By the basic way collection works, it makes forward impulsion into upwards force.
The thing that really impressed me, other than pulling out, was how they handled the horse after they got off. They took the horse all the way back to their comfort zone by starting ground work. The horse knows how to do ground work such as giving to the rein. This act of going to the very basics helps the horse calm down. They aren’t being asked for anything hard or complicated.

The camera work was so poor I couldn’t be bothered to watch the whole video. Either decide to be in slow motion the whole time or keep it in regular speed the whole time going back-and-forth just makes the thing unwatchable

Handled well by rider publicly. There is something extremely uncomfortable to me about this horse, very uncertain, anxious.
Horses can become extremely anxious and nervous, worried they may do wrong let's hope his training had nothing to do with this
This is the proper thing for the rider to do with a clearly rattled & unnerved horse. The gentle strokes on the neck were great. Great 'horseman'.... NOT just a 'rider' using the horse as a trophy robot.

Could someone please outline the signs of the mare’s distress from the beginning? To the (very!) untrained eye it’s hard to notice until quite a few minutes in. Looks like the rider did the very best he could and showed his horse a lot of care and concern!
You can actually see it right from the beginning if you know what to watch for.
Even before he is really in the arena the horse is very tense in her walking, he is holding the reins very tight (if it's because of the horse is ready to explode or if it is the cause of it I can't tell without seeing the warmup ) the horses chin nearly touches the under side of her neck. Even from afar you can see the white of her eyes a few times. Also there is much foam coming from her mouth and she is chomping the bits eratically (this can also been caused by the tight rein or from anxiety). I can't really see if she is already sweatting in this light.
Her tail is held high and stiff or even swishing which is also a sign for agitation (sometimes even pain).
It's a bit hard to tell because of the videos quality but she is so tense that she is freqently offbeat. In some comments she is called lame but I think when a horse is so hard coiled and agitated you can't say that for sure.

@@wolfsdream499 the reins are no more tight than they need to be, dressage has a lot of contact. This is shown through horses being on the bit aka the head position of this horse. Personally I'd say the head is behind the diagonal but many horses naturally carry their heads this way. The foam and bit chewing is usually a sign of good contact and suppleness. The horses I trained would play with the bit when they were bored, it can be a sign that the horse is nervous. One of the mares I trained did this exact thing, after going back to the drawing board we worked through it
Good on him. He made a great decision. Sometimes it just doesn't work, but he did the best with this situation. He did the right thing by the horse and this is very humbling to watch.

Julio made the best of this situation... i don‘t know him and i don‘t know the horse. But every horse could be such impressed and tense. It‘s not easy to controll these situations and bring it to a good end - especially in this scene. Well done 👍

That's a beautiful mare! But looks lame in the hind to me. And extremely distressed from the beginning and it got worse, the longer took. Poor thing, just tried to get out of there asap. Good decision to cut that performance.
I hope that's not her normal self, tho. It's not healthy to always be on edge like that. She was about to explode...
Mares are amazing...I prefer them but they can be tricky sometimes...agree about the hind end...something wasn’t right!
