to this day edward gal still does not wanna talk about totilas and what happend to him and why he died so young. that horse had so many problems when they used rolkkur and blamed the germans. the germans ruined him , that's what all people say in the netherlands, my home country, nobody get's why i don't like anky, edward etc. because they used rollkur and then people tell me that they don't use it anymore? look at all of totilas his sons that are being ridden by edward, he's uses they same 'training' style he used with their father. taking 1 of them to tokio when that horse was only 7 years old. just like totilas just tell mee that son of totilas is not walking the same unhappy path as his father had to . but almost nobody cares. because that son is just like his father and can even better then his father. it would not suprise me that his sons now walking the same path do not have the same outcome as their father. they will . edward still thinks that what he does is good. he's still out there doing this stuff same as all the other's because its easy to do. it's just a shame. they never learn. and never will because of the fei is doing nothing about it.

@@LizTapken like natural moving flat shod TWH next to Big Lick. That's why I left competition. It's happening with eventing too - more emphasis on dressage scores with flashy movements so people are bringing in heavier warmbloods with less endurance while they're simultaneously making cross country more and more technical. It's basically become show jumping with solid objects which is more demanding and more dangerous so there are more falls and more retirements. And they think the answer is to make more jumps breakaway so there's less chance of injury when the horses slam into them instead of changing things so that doesn't happen 🙄 Meanwhile you have non-competitive classic riders as well as disciplines like working equitation proving that you can have top level communication and athleticism without all the cranking and yanking, and with horses staying happy and sound for far longer.

I used to exercise one (no jumping) who was so hot that you needed to let him run it out for half an hour on the lunge line before even thinking about getting on, and some days all we did was walk because he was still on the verge of exploding if I tried anything more. It IS possible for them to compete at that level and still be capable of going calm and relaxed when they're off course, but trainers don't care. That's supposed to be the point of doing dressage first in eventing - to prove that they're capable of that with good balance and communication before setting them loose on the high risk cross country. Of course that's when cross country was about endurance and just doing simple jumps at speed, not a triple coffin drop bounce twist back handspring.

Nowadays they come out of the stable, do the job, back in the stable. No life, super protected, no turnout in case they harm themselves and can't compete the following week. Nothing is traffic proof and road safe anymore. My ex eventer is literally bombproof in heavy traffic not many folk can say that. @@kimsutherland977 they also miss the fact that standing around in a stall 23 hours a day makes them MORE prone to injury because they are not meant to be stationary. Turnout keeps them limber and builds strength in a more complete and balanced way, whereas if you pull them out of a stall and take them straight into piaffe of course they're going to do things like bow tendons. The risk of injuring themselves playing in a safe, level turnout is much lower than that.
I test rode a mare once who was 4 and just started under saddle and had spent her entire life in a stall. Her hocks were so wobbly it felt like she was about to fall over because the connective tissues hadn't gotten any use to develop the necessary elasticity during the critical growth years. I doubt she could have stayed sound at any significant level of performance. Vs said 33 year old I mentioned who I got at 25 and always had pasture access (at least as long as I had her) and never took a single lame step - even galloping over hard terrain and rocks barefoot! Obviously she had great genetics in the first place but at that age if she hadn't been able to move and stay limber 24/7 it would have been a different story.

If you're entering competitions for the prize money and fame, you have no business competing at all. When the FEI refuses to uphold the standards for the safety of the horses and honest riders, it is time for them to be replaced. All they are doing is lowering standards and supporting horse abuse. The biggest issue with roll-kur, besides the physical and mental issues for the horses, is ; that only 1 of 100.000 riders are strong enough to still ride the horse uphill to a vertical nose line after using roll-kur. And only 1 in 100.000 horses has the physics and temperament to stand the physical strain and torture. And the two rarely find each other. I find it so frustrating that his movement was so much more beautiful _beforehand_ - and there is nothing beautiful about an animal being forced into something so unnatural and uncomfortable.
Many years ago, I was into show jumping and my coach made us take dressage classes. Until then, I thought dressage was horribly boring, but those demanding classes - and the stronger partnership with my horse that resulted - give me a great deal of respect for the discipline and I started enjoying watching it.
As I said, that was many years ago - before Rollkur became a thing. I find it sad that this gets rewarded, but I find it absolutely heartbreaking that these noble creatures who are willing to do so much for us are so misused, and especially that it is done openly and at the highest levels of sport.

The people that did this to you are clearly not going in heaven. They ruined a life. And hurt one. We love Totlias forever. People that see this comment, Like if you agree. Please DON'T ever treat any animal like this. As it's heart breaking to watch. We will miss Totlias. This is the biggest comment I've made for him. RIP

In the words of the legendary dressage trainer Fritz Stahlecker: "It is simple: what looks bad, is bad. Rolkur looks terrible, and it is terrible." But Rollkur wasn't the only "technique" used on Totilas and his sons: *Stretchies* were used, too = the way Dutch Harness horses and Hackneys and Saddlebreds are trained to step higher when started as 2yr olds. Stretchies amplify the front leg movement, while the hind legs lag behind. It causes asymmetry in the trot under saddle, especially in collection. ua-cam.com/video/Vu2yQPz2hfQ/v-deo.htmlsi=KTQHRViA16EnfdZf - Sadly , carriage horse trot is the fashion in dressage. The breeders are breeding carriage-trot warmbloods for the market and getting good auction results with high-stepping, hollow-backed 'harness type' warmbloods. What a shame.

The moment the IOC changed the rules to permit professionals to compete it spelled the utter destruction of the art of equitation.
None of these "methods" would have been conceived of much less employed on talented equines were it not for changing an art form into an entire profit making enterprise from breeding to competition and all between.

All he does is to find excuses for how he and others, like Helgstrand that he cooperates with, treat their horses.

really not true, because how will horses get the exercise? realistically, no one can afford acres and acres to let horses run free. they need the exercise to stay healthy. I ride a halfigner mare who was previously a pasture horse and she was so unhealthy, riding her has improved her health and mentally too! she loves to work i only ride her walk trot and canter. and then there’s the extremes in horse racing, showjumping and many more. I’m not blaming, however i hope you can understand (me as i explained my situation) is no match for totila’s pure animal abuse. i wanted to get his story out. and i do agree with you too some stage. i hope that hackamores and bitless will be more popular, and also less competitions standards are lower (not so extreme) to make horse’s and riders lives better. the equestrian industry has much a journey to go, but the rollkur in totilas was a long time ago and i really hope things get better i hope this makes sense to some degree.

a lot of horses enjoy ridden work, it keeps them stimulated, fit and healthy and as long as a rider is kind and compassionate i see no problem with that. There are bad apples in every sport, therefore we can point blame - your every day honest rider would never ride a horse like this, even uneducated people can tell this is unnatural. I personally love to jump and the horse I ride literally throws herself at them, shes so excited! I never EVER use a whip on her, she responds to voice commands and is bold; how is that bad?

@@samanthapels4497 tell that to my mare I lost at 33 who did everything I ever asked of her - often at a gallop - and was 100% sound and healthy until the day she died. Correct riding being mindful of their conditioning and biomechanics does not have to be harmful. They're also quite capable of injuring themselves (sometimes permanently) just tearing around the pasture because that's the reality of highly athletic animals.
They also can't exercise at that level doing groundwork, unless you happen to be capable of running 20+ mph. A horse I used to lease broke out of his stall at a competition and ran half of the cross country course loose - a level above what he was entered in! - because he just loved it THAT MUCH. My current mare will run around the pasture randomly jumping bushes and puddles that she could easily go around just because she feels like it. If they hated it they would resist and look miserable the way these GP horses do.
