Great job Paul, I like the way it's reinforced that you cannot always rely on the ignition coil current waveforms to identify a Weak Coil. You proved that by doing the ultimate test, check the Spark jump at the spark plug, that test doesn't lie. Awesome !!!!

    Paul,
Just wanted to thank you for these tools I work on my own cars as a hobby and purchased a Modis scan tool that I learned to use from watching your verus video's. My F250 was purchased with what I thought was a bad transmission shaking when in overdrive. I put the scantool on and saw issues with 7 and 9 , quick check and the cop's were the fault. That 10 minute diagnosis made the hobby fun!

I just diag'ed a a bad cap & rotor on a '96 Tahoe using your test light method - I had been working on cars over 25 years before I found your channel, and never even thought to use one that way! It works great. That's my go-to spark tester now - quick and easy! I also used to refuse any vehicles built after '95 before I found your channel, too. 😁
Tahoe had a double-dead miss - #'s 2 & 8 were completely dead. Spark was very weak and intermittent - could barely make a 1/4" gap. Turns out there's a TSB for corrosion in the distributor on those due to bad venting. The rotor contacts had white fuzz all over them - never saw one that bad! But, that wasn't the actual cause of the miss - it was internal to the cap (I just had to clean the contacts and try, lol). New cap and rotor, and it's fixed. 👍 Nice n easy!
Great stuff Paul, as usual. I'm looking forward to Part 2 of that Lexus on your Premium Channel. 😎

As usual Paul, another great one to watch.
BTW...that cyl 3 misfire count could be from the #8 as in the fire order Cyl 3 is before the #8. so that coil may be fine after all on 3. BUT WAIT..THERE'S MORE. Lol Another suggestion for those wanting to make their own fuse buddy is to use the same kind of inline fuse holder to be able to use the fuse you remove to do the test.. just like how that other buddy you used did.
Thanks again Paul for your hard work and showing us all how it is done.

Hey! Just wanted to say thanks for the great diagnostic information.
    I have a unique issue with my 1999 F350 4x4 with 6.8 V10.
I replaced all plugs and coil packs a year ago. Spent that year hauling cattle almost everyday with no issues from truck. One day while idling unnoticed the tell tale misfire of a bad coil pack. I used my scan tool and the number 8 cylinder code came up along with the Robson multiple misfire code. I bought a new coil pack installed and all was fine. I pulled out of my drive and about a mile up the road truck stares skipping and then just shut off. Diagnosed pcm fuse was blown, every time I would replace it it would blow immediately. I unplugged #8 coil pack and the pcm fuse did not blow. I got a new plug and installed and a new coil pack in #8 cylinder. Started up, no codes, all good, pulled on to road and bam skip starts and pcm fuse blew again. Checked coil pack and it was also blown out of the bottom. Unplugged and replaced pcm fuse and it runs again just skipping? Any ideas?

I had the same issues with my 99 ford f150. no scanner here :(. I used a timing light in older style coils and spark wires. When cold it fires find rpm fine. Coil when hot C7 misfires, rattles engine, timing light off in spark wire shown. I ohm visual both coils and spark plugs wires at cold and everything was fine. At hot my timing light found cylinder 7 intermittent/dead when hot was the issue. Did a cylinder compression test at 158psi. Visual inspection boots and spark plugs fine. Even clean the coil grounds some rust. still a week coil. I need a new coil. Yep is a ford alright. Took sometime conventionally. Great video here for diagnostic scan tool like that fuse testing :D.

Great video. Like you say, there are many variables. In believe the voltage waveform of the injector is a good indicator but I think the current indicator is the best. Modern diagnostics are mostly guided by resistance checks and voltage readings and sometimes that i just not enough or makes you waste a lot of time. It is too bad that your clamp on probe picks up so much noise. I would love to see a the injectors current waveform measured by connecting the instrument in series.

NICE INSIGHT MAN! i change plenty of coils on these fords.. and triton v8 on the Econaline vans.. man some are sour to get to.. and sometimes the coil are so old its stuck on the plugs.. even a twist wont due.. or the coil bolts keep spinning on the plastic manifold.. i would of always suggest it being a coil and done the plugs...

Great video I use the snapon flag pickups or the stick you just have to use a mv scale on your scope but they work good for doing comparison test on the secondary firing and they pick up good on ford coils

Nice one! Dont know if it mutters on this engine, but i allways try to take out plugs, when they are super hot(Run the engine long just before) and that has done the job with those "hard on" Clow and Spark -plugs for me.

you people talking crap about Paul need to stick it where the sun doesn't shine. he has advanced my skills on diagnostics to a higher level of understanding the world of automotive.s . he's a brother to me that is priceless that money can't buy. you bush on him you bush on me.

Paul is not a good mechanic at all. Read my way of doing this in 10 times less time. I can work circles around you Paul. With a mere 14 dollar scanner I would look at what codes were present. Then from there with engine running I would puty finger tip on each injector connector and feel for a pulse of it clicking, then from there used a 5 dollar test light to check for voltage at the connector at the coil and PRESTO I would know I need to replace those coils and if the miss persisted I would know the spark plug needed to be replaced. You lack mechanical inclination, butrather have memorized tech equipment knowledge

@Earl Guyton He is trying to teach real diagnostic procedures for people who care about doing it right and to not be a parts changer like you. What do you do when you are out of guesses and it still isn't fixed?

@12:39 definitely agree. You almost can’t go wrong with a shooting-from-the-hip recommendation of replacing ignition coils on a Ford.

Adressing that high idle would be really great. If you just haven't mentioned that... Otherwise really perfect video.
From watching your other videos I could bet you were going to solve that high idle. I was watchig to the last second and thinking, he's gonna solve that too. The video is about misfireing and you haven't done anything wrong by not adressing high idle. It's just that your video are to perfect and you always give us more than you should. Like a child that gets everything and sudenlly you don't buy him something and he starts screaming.
