Alex, thanks for the step by step video. I'm a retired Air Force and school teacher. Not a mechanic, but I can follow good instructions. I bought this car in an auction as a project , it had a bad water pump. I took it to a mechanic and I think he didn't want to attack the problem, so he told me I needed a new motor. I didn't believe him, and I said to myself "I'll fix it". I must have watched your video like 20 times. I think I memorized it. I followed your steps, bought the water pump kit you suggested, made sure the timing chain was on right, put it all back together and the car started. I'm retired, so I took my time and it worked. I highly suggest having a cordless ratchet. Again Thanks!

And if someone can’t put stuff back and make sure it’s properly torqued they don’t need to be working on someone else’s car. You do great work, Alex. Keep on it, brother.

Hello thanks for watching. Have the chain and and guides been replaced if not I definitely recommend doing it right and going in with new stuff but to answer your question yes you can remove the tensioner Without disassembling the front cover you have to remove both valve covers and hold both cams /Locked in place and make sure that the tensioning Guide keeps tension on the chain. If the chain slips out of place you will have to remove front cover to time it properly.good luck be safe have fun
Great video Alex. I have a “slight” problem. Due to a bad tensioner, while removing the harmonic balancer bolt the crankshaft spun but the camshafts stayed in place. Can you assist me with realigning them.
A lot of important information left out. So if anybody wants to screw up there engine go ahead and follow this one. Did everything as he did, even watched several times, engine screwed. Thanks
Sorry you feel that way buddy.if your engine jumped time prior to you starting the job engine damage is almost Certain this is an interference engine.I did mention this job take skills if you are a novice this wasn’t the job for you. May I ask what happened

@@AlexTheCarDoctor I actually found my problem tearing it down same things you did was helpful it was a lifter front driver's side wish you had a video of that but I have a question if I unboltied camshafts not using the unboltied sequence DOD I mess up my heads or as long as I bolt them back in the right sequence right and I don't know but non of the timing points on chain where on point it was out of time tomorrow I'm about to put lifter and just put everything back then next week ordering water pump new chain tensioner and guides what can I use to clean some black slush in heads or should I just leave it and do oil changes with mystery additive what would you do Thanks for Advice New Subscriber
I wouldn't use oil stabilizer in this engine for very long. Some components operate on oil pressure and Lucas is so thick the oil pump may not continue to overcome the extra viscosiry. The valve train is lubricated by a stream of oil from the lifters and restrictions could overheat the cam and rockers

Question , we watched your video and got all the way through until the timing chain tensioner. Once tensioner was in and plate was screwed on , we tried to pop it and it would not pop all the way. We thought it could be a defaulted tensioner bought a new one but it did the same thing. What would you do in that situation?

Hey there if it has jumped timing there is a 50/50 chance that you may have internal engine damage because you have a interference engine, that means when a timing chain has jumped out of time the engine valve will contact the engine piston.the next step should be a cylinder leak down test if you suspect it has jumped timing hopefully it is something else
I have no slack in my chain to fit the tensioner in its already tight with the passenger guide in. If I add tensioner I can’t rotate crank, any advice? My cam marks are 36 links apart, no slack, 90 link chain
Alex thank you, I need help. when I crank the motor doesn't start but the upper radiator gets full of pressure right away? can you tell me what it might be? a clogger radiator, or a head gasket
Hello and thanks for watching. It sounds like you have a bad head gasket. The next step is to do a block test, also the car may start if you leave the radiator cap off with the gas pedal to the floor the first 15 sec then release and try again with out the pedal.
The milky stuff is oil and water mixed due to the water pump failure. Hope the there was an oil and filter change otherwise I would think the engine failed soon after.
Absolutely! Flushed all the milky oil out. Put in fresh oil and new oil filter. I even changed the radiator because the milky coolant caused low flow. Thanks for watching!
Hello, how are you, what kind of oil did you put in the end and tell me if I can change the water pump myself and if it is mandatory to put a new chain
Hello and thanks for watching. The oil I used was 5w20. Doing it yourself depends on your skill set and tool availability. I highly recommend you doing the timing chain and tensioner as well as timing chain guides, so you won’t have to go back in and do those if it goes out in the future. You have to remove the timing chain to get to the water pump. Please use quality parts if you do decide to do it yourself.
Sir ...so my charger start now but seems like if was misfire a spark plugs or a vacuum line and it get hot a middle of the hot gage..can't get to stay steady so am thinking head gasket ...can you please help me.....or can it be water pump...maybe ...it looks like this and sounds like that
Alex, you said at about the 29' mark, right before you started to remove the hydraulic tensioner, that the evident play in the timing chain caused the engine to "jump time". If it had jumped time, wouldn't that have caused the valves to impact the pistons, leading to far more damage? Particularly, if it jumps time, will you find that the dots on the sprockets are misaligned with the links on the chain? I am doing this job on my own 2.7 L engine in a Dodge Intrepid '04. You give me some good ideas about how to determine if the chain is loose and how to determine if the water pump pulley is loose. I don't have the front cover off yet. I'm supposed to get a suitable pulley removal tool tomorrow. While I'm at it, I'm also going to replace my radiator and several components of the cooling system. I'm also going to flush out the heater core.
In the month since my last post I've gotten the front cover off, replaced the thermostat, removed the primary and secondary chains and all the guides. So far, I've found nothing that would have caused all the noisy trouble. I've replaced both the secondary chains and secondary tensioners. The torque on the cam cap bolts is 105 inch-lb, achieved incrementally.
I've gotten my new water pump installed. Before I can proceed to the primary timing chain I need to put the lower parts back on. I had removed them to inspect the crankshaft bearings. Finding nothing amiss, I'll put it all back together.
You think it easy for me to change my own oil in a 3.6 charger I seen videos it look so easy I just need the jack stands I have all the tools only thing I Wana no which way to turn the oil plug on the pan left or right or will it have it stamp with direction
I have this car and how can you tell it’s a bad water pump if you have no symptoms besides a small leak of coolant? The dealership said it’s a bad water pump but I think they are lying to me. It’s not making any noises, no mixture of coolant and oil, not overheating and I only see a few drops of coolant on my garage floor when the temperature changes.

@@AlexTheCarDoctor Ok Broo.. thank you very much for your valuable response
I will do it very carefully and as you propose it
Very good video, thank you
Great video Alex.
Daryl Pasto what happened to your car?
It's a T40 torx for the timing cover
I'm currently doing it to the same exact vehicle
this is a amazing video, you guys got it going on, fantastic video on detailed view, and explaining what your doing... you should be training people to do work... your great
Thanks Terry! I try to make it as detailed as possible. I appreciate you watching man!
@@AlexTheCarDoctor do u have a link. To putchase the cloys timing chain kit and waterpump
Sure I can help with that what year is your car 2.7 engine right

Must the motor be with number 1 piston in top dead center to replace timing chain
I never check for that some technicians do but I find it unnecessary
Helpful advice I have a 2.7 engine on dodge magnum it's knocking ppl say I need a engine knocking sounds like it's passenger front chaine should I do this what your doing others say it's rockers or valves others oil pump I just got it runs and drives after a mile drive sounded louder like running with no oil got home and after a while I seen a oil spill but like real thin like water should I just add Lucas stabilizer for know I drained oil and filter it was bad no water just a couple bubbles helpful video thanks advice would really help
I think it will be easier if you just did a engine swap from what I’m hearing you explain.it’s hard for me to tell for sure because I’m not there with the vehicle but yes I do think a engine swap is in your future
Do u Thinck I can use a power drill to remove the
Hermonic balancer bolt out that’s where im stuck at rn and you can’t turn the bolt with out the hearmonice ballencer turning right you need to turn the car in right my battery died so I got to charger it or get a new one it looks new I’m just trying to work on my self because no one around known how to and I’m using this video to help me a little bet at a time when I can
Hey buddy a power drill will not work you need a strong electric 1/2 inch impact gun or Air impact 1/2 inch. Or do what I did on the video I will have to watch again to see what I did
Thanks for watching as well,I’m glad my videos are helping
Ok think you sir
Hello I have a code p0016 and changed crank and camshaft wires as well and took the battery negative out and it ran fine but then the check engine light came back on I went back to autozone and same code but this time it had a leak of water on the right side underneath the compressor you think I need to change everything or just the water pump? If so from where should I order , and the right part because there are tons of it , it's a Dodge charger 2009 2.7 saludos.. n ty. God bless 🙌
Hey there thanks for watching the water pump needs to be replaced along with all the timing components that’s what’s causing that Code, for parts go to Napa
Do you have to remove the chain to do the waterpump
Chains and guides all seem fine no play at all
Unfortunately yes it’s sort of a process
@@AlexTheCarDoctor I'm also missing something like a sensor or something that goes in the top of the trans, it has one screw hole, and if you put your finger in the hole you can feel the flywheel.
Would you know what that sensor is called?

Good work man keep the videos coming !
I got you! Thanks for watching brother!
Question , we watched your video and got all the way through until the timing chain tensioner. Once tensioner was in and plate was screwed on , we tried to pop it and it would not pop all the way. We thought it could be a defaulted tensioner bought a new one but it did the same thing. What would you do in that situation?
How do you get that bottom timing gear back on once you've replaced the rings and put the rear cover on?
Thanks for the informative video
My pleasure thanks for watching
I have a 07 charger with 2.7 and it was running decent and now it won’t crank . Timing chain has been loose but now it won’t start . The engine still turns so I’m Thinking it jumped time .. is it too late to replace timing chain if it jumped time and won’t start or is there still hood ?
Hey there if it has jumped timing there is a 50/50 chance that you may have internal engine damage because you have a interference engine, that means when a timing chain has jumped out of time the engine valve will contact the engine piston.the next step should be a cylinder leak down test if you suspect it has jumped timing hopefully it is something else
Any videos on how to time the cams?
No sorry
Good vid bro. How much would you usually charge/ask for a job like this in US?
In total 700 to 800$
About to do one tomo thanks for the video !
That’s what’s up! You got this... let me know if any questions or issues arise while you’re doing it...
How much this job cost with parts and labor wise
@@jahonbutler2907 Roughly $700 parts and labor, but it all depends on where you live and the shop labor rates in your area...
Is the guide that the tensioner pushes supposed to wiggle back and fourth on the bottom spacer?
From what I remember yes but to be on the safe side can you send me a video on Instagram

Thanks for the help, now I know how to fix my 300,
I have no slack in my chain to fit the tensioner in its already tight with the passenger guide in. If I add tensioner I can’t rotate crank, any advice? My cam marks are 36 links apart, no slack, 90 link chain
Can you send me a picture on Instagram so I can see what’s going on for myself
@@AlexTheCarDoctor this situation was the tensioner not depressed all the way down
That’s what I figured but I need to see a picture to be sure,I’m glad you figured it out

Hi this a very good video can I ask you if it posible to change only the water pump just removing the tensioner chain with out moving the chain?
Thanks for the video are the new tensioners pre lubed are do you have to prime them before installing them thanks
You have to engage the new tensioner, Watch part two I show how I did it
Sir ...so my charger start now but seems like if was misfire a spark plugs or a vacuum line and it get hot a middle of the hot gage..can't get to stay steady so am thinking head gasket ...can you please help me.....or can it be water pump...maybe ...it looks like this and sounds like that
First thing you need to do buddy is a block test that will test for a blown head gasket
The timing chain may have jumped
Can I do this the same way for I got at Chrysler 300 2008 2.7L v6
Hey there yes it’s the same process
Alex, can you just replace the water pump only? And is it the same amount of work?
Does it matter if you turn the crank counterclockwise?
It should not matter
Get with asap I'm in progress of doing ng that need to know all I need to replace......thanks by the way too Bro
Everything should come in one kit. Get the timing chain water pump kit.
Clean video
I just replaced my thermostat and im still seeing leak from the weep hole does that mean i have to replace the Water pump?
It sounds like it.if it was leaking from the weep hole it was always the water pump
Good to know, i assume you had to drain the oil correct?.
Hey there
Sorry for the late response
Did you get it figured out
Does the 09 2.7L still have ignition capacitors?
