Afghan music at Shiraz Arts Festival, tambur & dilruba solos

- In 1974, Afghan master musicians at the suggestion of Lloyd Miller appeared in Shiraz during the Shiraz Arts Festival. Lloyd Miller & Dr. Safvat hosted them and arranged for them to be on the program. Since only serious traditional ethnic music was presented at Shiraz, Miller & Safvat asked the musicians to play solos on their instruments. Here are solos on tambur and dilruba. The concert was taped by NIRT and a copy was obtained by NIRT affiliated Lloyd Miller and released as a video in 1979.
Kya baat hai ! I'm Indian, I really enjoy these musicians. What a deep feeling they have ! What artistic beauty ! Wah !
So expressive; at a high level of musicality and technicality.
I love the ones who gathered these great players to record and save this valuable pieces
For the last 7 years I am listening this time & again still no satisfaction. Love from India to Afghan people.
Is it that bad? I reckon it sounds wonderful.
@@johnnotrealname8168 maybe they meant dissatisfaction...
@@explosivehotdogs I hope so.
Lloyd Miller is a living legend
the best tabla player in the history of afghanistan Ustad Hashem student of Ustad Miyan qader bahksh ,Head of the Punjab Gherana
Incredible all the spikes of emotions it puts the listener through.
Great Music and great talent of all players! The tone of music show our great masters of music ! Music born in Afghanistan and become teenager in India !
True! I love that saying...
I am a Canadain of punjabi decent...play the dilruba harmonium ect...hearing this muslim take on our music is awsome.
Sat sri akal..
your sikh brother.
Actually they are doing wrong by playing musical instruments & delighting the audience as per Islamic belief.
Playing music along with singing songs praising god is one of the effective & easy way to connect with the god as per our Hindu Sikh beliefs.
But in Islam it is kufra act which is punishable offence even upto death penalty.
Now a days TALIBAN are ruling over there all cinema & music theatres are closed since last @ 1& 1/2 years.
These are original musical instruments of NE Afghanistan that happen to be shared by the peoples of NW India. In places like Kabul you will find Sarinda and Delruba similar to those in NW India. The Tanbur is a uniquely Afghan instrument as well.
@@DGR233They belong to South Asia as whole.
Saying a specific country is incomplete for their history.
Aside, indeed these are astonishingly similar.
For instruments like Sarinda, we have various similar instruments. We got Sarangi in Himalayan areas, Ghyzek in middle east, Kobyz in Kazakhstan (their national instrument), Suroz in Balochistan (Pakistan), Sarinda in Rajasthan and Punjab.
Specifically, the sarinda is believed to have been formed by Sikh guru Arjan Dev ji.
Dilruba is not a Punjabi word so it's our instrument . The Mardana who was the best friend of Guru Nanak, introduced the rubab and Dilruba to Sikh people.
lot of loves for you 🇵🇰💚❤️
very wonderful performances!! Thanks for this. It's an echo of a time between wars for Afghanistan....something to aspire to in the near future - a return of arts and culture and stability and peace. Tashakor.
Legends for ever 🇦🇫❤
Long live AFGHANISTAN ❤❤❤❤
That historic Afghanistan, not sure if we can see them playing again. 04:30 That Esraj (Afghan Dilruba) part is heart touching. Love from Great Britain. (Mon 10 Aug 2020 0010)
Afghanistan before religious fundamentalism was truly a cultural treasure...
Nail in tge coffin my friend. War ruined our generations in tge name of religion and resources.
Indeed
It still is
Fu.k your mindset.
People at that time were also religious.
Beautiful music
I love Afghan music is my hart
Nice music, so classical. It was recorded in Iran in late '70's. It's all instrumental by Afghan masters.
1974 !!!!
Wah, the dilruba has indeed robbed my heart! Thank you so much for sharing, Dr. Miller!
Good and better times, indeed. There was no war in Afghanistan, nor Islamic regime in Iran. In those times, we were all brothers. Same language, close cultures, one history,.. now I only see hatred and racism between us. Pity. I wish those times come back. I wanna see all persianspeakers from Afghansitan, Iran, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaiyan, Turkey, Irak, Bahrein, Turkemenistan and Pakistan all together again.
What a sweet beautiful wish! Hope it will come true as soon as possible!
Yes, there is so so so much racism in Iran against Afghans. it’s very heartbreaking. We speak the same language yet we’re mocked for our accent/dialect. Even more than just mocking, even attacked 😢. A big shame.
Ohhhh look at these legends and their magical fingers.Something looking to be out of this world.
Absolutely haunting and beautiful. Thank you.
Splendid music and fantastic musicians :0)
NICE MUSIC, I LOVE MY Afghanistan.
beautifully done... even Ustad Hashim sitting in the back is taken by the tune and improvisations played....
Such a wonderful piece of art. it tears through souls, unimaginable feeling. Many Many Thanks Dr. Lloyd Miller.
Bhairavi especially on dilruba.

Thanks a million for posting. What a wonderful festival. I am only beginning to appreciate how amazing it must have been to be there and to experience all this music. This is beyond anything we get to have in the U.S. Once again, thank you.
The Dilruba piece is so close to Raag Bhairavi of Indian Classical Music, in both form and content. Beautiful music!
It is raag bhairavi indeed.
Afghanistan music is gold🇦🇫🇦🇫
Stuff like this makes me grateful for the internet. (I listened to this 10 years ago when I joined UA-cam. Before that I had no idea how old original Afghan music sounded like.)
Thanks a bunch for sharing.
My commendations for your work Dr. Miller.
Beautiful presentation ! Regards !

Doctorlloydmiller you are so great!!!
Doctorlloydmiller
Thank YOU Sir, for all efforts you and your colleagues who played a role for arranging, recording and sharing this music from old time
I know it was very expensive then
But the valuable gift you treasured for musicians, Persians and humanity is priceless
Music is an international language which is connecting people through spirit, heart.
You are a true master and unique legend to recognize these values long ago, and make it everlasting
God bless
This is marvelous! I love it! Thanks for posting it.

i know what you mean by the electronic keyboard stuff they use these days. i play an afghan instrument called rubab and i try to bring the traditional music back. i plan on trying to play the afghan tanboor played in the first part of this video. i love the sound of it, i listen to gholom bahuddin's tanboor. it's very nice. oh and great videos.
That's great.
We here in Himalayan area (Himachal , India) are trying to revive our version of rubab back into life.
I specifically like playing it.
With sufficient practice n modifications, new gen will rejuvenate these instruments back, i believe.
My commendations for your Dr. Miller.
Awesome yr...
I do not to whether to be happy or sad. I am happy to see such works but it sadness me as I fail to see such beauty in our current time. Music is evolving, that is for sure, but I do not what is its evolving to!
Thank you
PS: Where can I find the entire video?
War robbed us of so much joy and beauty! Where would have Afghanistan been today without war... Especially with this kind of music!

Resembles to thaat or raag Bhairav on Tamboor solo.
& dilruba piece of music on raag Bharavi of North Indian Classical music. Both played superb ,👏👏👏👏👏🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Indeed.
Afghanistan followes Hindustani classical music. Many Afghan musicians have taken training at India at some point, so as to keep their culture alive.
afghan classical music
Beautiful! How come the picture and sound of Persian performance are so low? Is there anybody, may be archive section of the "National Iranian Television" has the original one? Please if any one has the original documents share it with the world! Thank you!
proud to be afghan :)
Good.

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH . . WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH . . . . . . .
are they perfoming at the tomb of Hafez?
+Azad Khademi Yes, this festival is held there, in Shiraz. The Shiraz-Persepolis Festival of Arts (Persian: جشن هنر شیراز) was an international summer arts festival held annually for eleven years from 1967 to 1977.
This performance must have been the 7th festival.
The place is the tomb of Hafez.

Hello,
It is said in the description that Lloyd Miller and Dr. Safvat had organized this event. Who were these people ? Is there any information about these people ?

Who is this man in first ... playing sarinda i guess
Search for Lloyd Miller and Dariush Safvat at wikipedia (dot) com
what are the names of the performers?
Raag Behro ??????????
is this the predecessor to the sitar?
Can be said.
More accurate can be said with a Persian instrument called "setar", which technically means 3 strings.
The overall evolution of Indian sitar can be called as a fusion between setar and Veena.
Fun fact: we have another instruments called "setar" in Xingiang region, 7-10 strings, played with now.
The word sitar as itself means "7 strings" (sat tar).
chi zebo ohange !!!!
What kind of tambur is it?
