  • Re uploaded this video as there was a problem with image changing from colour to black and white in the middle section of the film. Hope this one is OK.
Also for clarification at 20.50 there are 2 shots of Lambley on the Alston Branch which is not in Scotland but has a Scottish connection as this was the Scottish Rambler No6 Rail Tour which also visited Langholm later that day but due to poor light and heavy rain I was unable to film there.
In 1966 Scotland offered a good variety of locomotive types and filming locations with LNER Pacifics on fast express workings and 0-6-0 goods engines on branch freights. On the west coast of Scotland there were LMS
2-6-0s employed on coal traffic whilst a number of enthusiasts specials ran on local lines and over the spectacular Waverly Route.
The scenes in this video were filmed by me using a standard 8mm cine camera with the soundtrack recordings mostly made at the same time.

First class footage, visited Brechin 2 years ago, sadly only a shadow of its former self. Our appetite for all things steam is catered for by such as yourself, many thanks mate.

Love the video. Are you able to tell if the loco at 2:59 is a Clan or Britannia?

Hi, glad you enjoyed the video.
The shot you refer to was of an up express at Auchterader and the loco is a Britannia No 70041 named Sir John Moore.
The following shot was taken a bit further along the line and is an Aberdeen to Glasgow service hauled by A4 60024 Kingfisher.

@PeterHutchinson-jc6wv thanks for your response. Do you happen to have any footage of the Clans? I ask as I am part of the draughting team for 72010 Hengist and I'm not sure there is any footage of then anywhere. Many thanks.

      Hello,
Sorry I haven't any footage of the Clans and cannot recall seeing any published myself. There was a photographer called Cam Camwell and he shot a lot of black and white footage in the 1950's and 60's and it might be worth searching there.

Did you know Micheal Marsden of Marsden rail fame. I have a number of his dvds and have noticed that some of the footage in your steam in the North East also appeared in this Darlington video. What was Mr Marsden like in person?

Hi in response to your questions I met Micheal many times and found him to be quite an amiable chap with a lot of enthusiasm for railways going back a long way and for producing videos to record his experiences for others to share.
When his own footage was insufficient particularly for the later productions he did rely on others such as myself to provide additional film which he then had digitised. Also he did aim to provide an appropriate soundtrack to accompany the film which is not easy and very time consuming.

@PeterHutchinson-jc6wv Thank you. Sounds like a lovely guy. I've always enjoyed his films particularly those of Birmingham and Doncaster. Is he still with us?

Hello, regretfully he is no longer with us. I think he died in the late 90s or early 2000s.but I am not sure exactly however the Marsden rail brand continued as a testament to the popularity of his videos.
