I do a short review of each brace and compare them one to another, hopefully helping you decide which one will work better for the kind of riding you're looking to do.

    Summary -
    In this video, I share my personal experience with four knee braces that I have used over the years. I am not a doctor or an orthopedic professional, but I have had a number of leg injuries and finding good leg protection has become kind of a passion of mine. The four knee braces I will be reviewing are my own personal braces paid for with my own money. I have no affiliation with any brand or store. In this video, I will share my knowledge and experience, but keep in mind that it is my personal experience. I am an average trail rider and amateur racer, so this is going to be my perspective. I will talk about the general concepts that I look for when I am picking a brace, such as fit, design, protection, mobility, durability, and the type of riding that it's best for. Then, I will go through each brace and see how it performs in those different areas. Fit is arguably the main thing when it comes to knee braces, and if the knee brace does not fit well or you cannot get it on very tight, then it's not going to do anything. Custom is best for fit, but if you are looking for an off-the-shelf brace, something that makes a huge difference is flexible collars that both the Pod and the CTI have. Another thing to look for is wide straps and lots of padding, which are important for tightening the brace without causing discomfort. Another aspect of fit that is important to consider is the chassis, which comes into play when talking about sizing.
    When it comes to choosing a knee brace for off-road riding, there are several factors to consider. The first is comfort, and one key aspect of this is the frame's flexibility. The Mobius brace is a good example of a brace that is comfortable because it has flex in the areas where it is supposed to, such as around the knee joint. This allows it to grip the sides of the knee joint without putting too much pressure on it. In addition, the sizing is easier with the Mobius brace. A well-fitting brace is essential, and a good way to check this is to make sure that you can't stick your fingers under any of the straps and that the brace is solid on your leg without sliding down or moving up.
    The second factor to consider is ligament protection. This is the main job of a knee brace, and if it doesn't protect you well, then it's not worth wearing. The brace should be able to stop your knee from hyperextending, which means moving in the opposite direction to bending. If you hit something or your leg gets stuck, the brace should stop it from hyperextending. The other important aspect of ligament protection is that the rigid frame does not allow sideways flexing. This is important in off-road riding, especially in slippery conditions where you don't want your knee to buckle sideways if your bike slides out or if someone hits you in the side of your leg.
    The third factor to consider is impact protection. When you're riding off-road, you want protection over your knees and shins because you're likely to fall down or hit trees and other obstacles. The protection should cover the entire range of motion, especially when your knee is bent because most of your riding and crashing will be with your leg bent, bracing for impact. The protection is typically made of plastic with padding behind it. The more padding there is, the more comfortable and impact-absorbing it will be.
    The fourth factor to consider is mobility. When you're dirt biking, you're moving around on the bike a lot, so you want a brace that moves with your body and is easy to move. A good fit is crucial, and a good hinge design is important too. Most braces these days have at least two pivots in their hinge, which makes them move more like a human joint. The weight of the brace is also important, and fortunately, all braces are pretty lightweight, even if they're not made of carbon fiber.
    The final factor to consider is quality and durability. Knee braces are expensive, so you want to be able to trust them and know that they will last a long time. Check forums and reviews to make sure that the brace you choose is one that you can trust and that won't fall apart or fail you when you need it the most. The Don Joy brace is an example of a brace that is both high quality and durable, as the speaker has had it for over five years.

      Amateur rider and 20 yrs in MRi and CT sales, and just got a partial tear of my LCL. Have great boots and now looking at, knee braces. I had been eyeing the Mobius stuff previously. Man they're not cheap but neither is knee surgery and rehab. I had a little paragliding crash 3 yrs ago, reconstructive humerus and shoulder etc and 2 yrs rehab, can't really get hurt again so trying not to worry about the $$ and just save my body LOL.

    Just watched this after having knee surgery and acl reconstruction. I was looking at custom braces from Ossur CTi, probably because of the pro riders and athletes who use them and thinking they must be the best.
    Well they may be very good but for the layman who can’t afford the astronomical £799 per brace they’re just affordable. Seeing a comparison from your video opens your eyes to other options.
    Thank you very much for sharing your views 👍

      There are a lot of pro riders and athletes out there using other brands as well. Pod, Leatt, and Mobius are all pretty popular with pro racers in the US.
      I'm sure that at least some of that has to do with sponsorships.

      @@DmitriyAdv thank you 🙏
      Yes I think your correct on the sponsorship point especially when you compare other brands as you have, you find similarities.
      I tried CTi who were not interested in any form of support blue light or military, only pro athletes.
      I will possibly try a donjoy defiance for multi sport over the CTi initially and see if it can be partially done through insurance.
      But will maybe look to the Pod or Möbius’s for the dirt.
      I had asterisk cell 2.0 on when I had the accident, so I will try another brand although it may well of happened with any and was just bad luck.
      Thanks again for your reply and helpful video 😉👍

    Well done video. I have not tried many OTC braces I have used a few custom ones through the years: Donjoy Defiance I, II, III, CTi 1, 2, and I actually did have a set of CTi OTC (more on that later).
    I agree that the Defiance is your best option, and I frankly don't think it's close. The Defiance have all fit very well and they have the option for a short lower frame if you want it to mount outside your boots. The CTi 1 I had was not bad but was never anywhere close to as comfortable as the Defiance I or II. I agree that the down side is the hard shell protection. I wear Leatt Dual Axis Knee Guards and I wish there was a hybrid of the two concepts.
    I tried to get a set of CTi 2 braces about ten years ago and they made two sets and could not get them to fit correctly and eliminate all pressure points. When they gave up, they gave me a pair of OTC braces (as in the video). These were "OK" but the fit was not what I would call great and I threw them away before I got a whole lot of use out of them and went back to the Defiance. In my opinion, any of the modern OTC moto specific braces would be better than the CTi OTC. I also noticed that the distance between the hinges was by far the widest with these braces, making them very difficult to wear under most moto pants.

      Thanks for sharing your experience! I would probably keep wearing the Defiance, but I now have some hardware in that leg (due to another injury) that that makes them uncomfortable. I have had mobuis for 5 years and agree with everything you said except for impact protection. The very thin foam does very little for direct impact to the knee cap. Last week, I had a direct hit with a rock. Bad enough that my knee was bleeding.

    • @DmitriyAdv
      @DmitriyAdv  Рік тому +1

      It may depend on what thickness foam pad you're using for sizing (mine came with three different ones). None of it is crazy thick, but for what it's worth it's thicker than POD and that Leatt knee guard in the video. CTI is a bit thicker, but the coverage is much worse.

    Thank you for putting this video together, doing the testing etc. I’ve recently had a near miss without anything other than D30 for impact on enduro trails. I twisted my knee outward which hurt like hell. It’s ok now but reinjury is to easy each time I get into steep and tight sections in the back of my mind I’m like, stop first then put your foot down. This video helped me pull the trigger on the POD’s.

      Have you gotten an MRI? If you're saying "reinjury is easy" after that twisted event, you might have something going on there that needs to be addressed. Knee surgery sucks, but not having stability and repeatedly popping it out and such will cause major problems for the joint in the long term.

    Just had a freak accident 2 weeks ago, blasting a deep sand berm. Have no idea how it happened, but before I knew it I was was down, and my knee was stuck under the handle bar as the bike kept pushing it forward. Eventually my knee gave out, MCL snapped, ACL partial tear, and my knee popped out of joint. Super Painful. Here's the kicker, I was wearing the Mobius X8's, and they did NOTHING to stop this from happening. Think about it, it's just a guard basically resting on the front of your leg. My question is, would the DonJoy defiance have stopped this from happening since it has the over under design? This is my third major injury in two years, and it's affecting my career and my business. Wife and all my colleagues pressuring me to sell the bikes...Riding is the only ting in life that brings me happiness, but man, this injuries are just brutal to deal with.....

    • @DmitriyAdv
      @DmitriyAdv  6 місяців тому +2

      Completely agree - injuries are brutal and every time I have one it makes me re-evaluate my hobby. As you said, nothing brings me quite as much happiness as riding, so I try and do everything I can to prolong it.
      For me this includes taking fewer risks riding, especially when it involves higher speeds. Because most protective gear really only works at lower speeds. Above a certain point physics takes over and 1/4 inch of padding and plastic won't help much.
      On knee braces specifically, a couple things to keep in mind. (1) The key with all braces is that they have to fit well (snugly to your leg) and the straps need to be TIGHT. If the brace is allowing your knee joint to hyperextend then something isn't right with the fit or the straps. A custom brace like the Donjoy Defiance will probably fit the best, but I'm not sure if the design is superior or not. When I got mine fitted, someone came out to my house and made sure I did the straps up right because that is critical, and they had to be much tighter than I would have thought. (2) When I got my Donjoy after my ACL surgery, the surgeon told me to not rely on the brace too much. He said the brace is at best 20% of injury prevention, my own muscles/strength is the other 80%. You'll hear that from many pro moto athletes too, that the best injury prevention is not gear, it's being stronger, more flexible...etc.

    • @JoshStreetDesign
      @JoshStreetDesign 6 місяців тому +1

      @@DmitriyAdv @DmitriyAdv Yeah see I've been getting faster and faster lately and even doing more MX style stuff in deeper sand which comes with different risks than woods as I've just found out. Back in October I broke my ankle casing a 60 ft jump at the track, and let's just say I am not going to be doing any more jumping from now on, that one was totally my fault. But your other point rings true about being in shape. I've been lifting weights for 33 years now and have always had a very strong leg structure, used to squat 405 for 24 reps. But lately as I'm getting older, turning 46 tomorrow, with all my injuries in the gym and crashes on the bike that's just reducing much more I don't have as much muscle mass as I used to. But I think it has really cut down the amount of injuries that I could have had because I crash a lot with the risks that I take, and the speeds I take them at on my 450 sx-f. I think it would be really hard for me to throw a leg on the bike and go slow. I think no matter how hard I try I would just end up throwing all caution to the wind and just getting that adrenaline rush of speed and weaving through the trees as fast as possible. I dunno... Definitely something to think about.

      @DmitriyAdv  Рік тому

      I'm currently riding with the Mobius braces, so that's my current personal preference based on the riding I'm currently doing. PODs are also great - they're lighter and ventilate better, but the impact protection/armor isn't as good.
      One advantage POD has is that you can buy just one brace, if you're only looking to use it on the leg with the ACL issue. Mobius is only sold in pairs.
      Fit is critical and everyones legs are different. If it's an option for you, I'd order both, try them on, and return the one you like less.

    • @DmitriyAdv
      @DmitriyAdv  Рік тому

      @@isaacl1809 haha, got it!
      I'll do a review of it at some point, but overall it's been a great brace. As I mention in this video it's a bit more light weight and more mobile than the Mobius. It's obviously more ventilated. I think the impact protection on the POD it is not quite as good as the Mobius, but it's still very good. I've taken some good spills on it, including onto rocks, and it did it's job. Mobius stays in place a bit better than the POD, but both are very comfortable.
      I still stand by what I say in this review - in my opinion, out of the braces I have experience with: POD would be my top choice for all around riding and Mobius would be my choice for off-road/woods/trail type riding, primarily because of it's better impact protection. However, either brace would work in either environment and the main thing is to make sure that a particular brace fits you comfortably. I have friends who ride the same kind of stuff and wear both Mobius and POD, simply because they like the fit of one over the other.

    Hi Dimitriy. I keep coming back to your great video. I finished up my PT sessions and went out riding with my Mobius X8 knee brace for first time. Had a couple of questions.
    I noticed after 3-4 hours, I could feel leg fatigue. Not sure because I haven't been on my KTM 690 ER for few months or extra weight of knee brace or from compression straps on brace being too tight . Perhaps a combination of these factors. I was in my Leatt 4.5 boots.
    My plan it to wear the Mobius X8 all day on my adventure rides; pretty much 100% of time. Prior to this, I wear Leatt Dual Axis knee guards, which are still big and bulky.
    Do you think I had my Mobius on too tight? Do you think one can wear the Mobius all day on adventure rides? Thanks .

      @DmitriyAdv  8 місяців тому +1

      I've personally spent many 8+ hour days on the bike in these braces. I find them all day comfortable, but everyone is different.
      If this is your first time riding after a long break I wouldn't be surprised if your legs get tired. I would give some time and make sure your leg strength/endurance is back to normal.
      Braces should be pretty tight to work properly. Something to make sure is that your brace is not sitting too low. If you watch the Mobius brace fitting video, you'll see how to put it on properly to make sure all the straps are in the right places. I've ran it too low a few times on accident, and it definitely makes it more restrictive because the hinge isn't line up with your knee properly.
      Hope that answers your question!

    • @DmitriyAdv
      @DmitriyAdv  Рік тому +2

      You could, though I personally don't wear knee braces on adventure bikes for a few reasons -
      * I think they're mostly effective in low speed crashes, the kind that are likely to happen in gnarly offroad on a dirtbike.
      * In a gnarlier/higher speed crash where there is a ton of energy involved - there is some data suggesting that a knee brace could cause a femur break instead of a ligament tear. If I'm in the middle of nowhere on my adv bike, I'd rather have a torn ligament than a broken bone.
      * They're an extra piece of gear to put on and take off, and they tend to contribute a bit more to pant wear than not having them.
      Again, those are just my reasons, personally. If I was taking my ADV bike somewhere really gnarly, I'd probably wear them. You can do whatever you feel most comfortable with.

I fully agree with all of your opinions except - for me - a broken bone is better than a ligament tore. I just had both recently and the real struggle now (stability, strength, self confidence etc.) is due to the ligament and not the bone. It will take me many other months to recover from the ligament. Just my POV. Cheers

      Motcross bikes are typically designed to be used on motocross tracks - higher speeds, jumps...etc. So the suspension, transmission, and engines are all designed for that. A motocross bike in the woods would be too stiff, engine too jerky, gearing would be incorrect (1st too tall, top gear too low), fuel tank too small...etc. you can make it work, but a proper woods/enduro bike would be much better out of the box.

    Hi Dimitriy. I tried my Mobius X8 walking around inside with boots on. I noticed my thigh strap ( #4 strap ) gets tight when I sit down. So in my case, I need to synch down my strap sitting vs. standing. Might explain why it felt uncomfortable during my first ride.
    When I slip the Mobius over my knee bone, the foam pads feels snug, but never tight. I can feel it expand and pop over knee bones. I didn't realize the Mobius frame has a little flex in the knee region. Also can synch and snug down with BOA cable.
    I did some further investigation on sizing of Mobius frame. As your video stated, the sizes are identical across S/M/L. Only difference is the strap lengths, internal padding, and the rear patella ( strap #2 ) back plate. Cable is same length. However, the XL and XS have their own shell.
    Any thoughts on the Leatt Z-frame knee brace? Impact CE rated and medically certified. Looks like it has a number of the qualities of the Mobius X8. But, only weights 2.75 lbs. per pair vs. 3.8 lbs. for Mobius. I am thinking already maybe looking at Leatt Z-Frame for moto tours / travel.

      My guess is that your brace might be too low on your leg, so when you bend your leg the hinge isn't lined up with your knee joint and it's causing the top of the brace (#4 strap area) to want to rise up.
      I'll put a link to the fitting of the brace at the end of this comment, notice where the patella back plate is on his leg, it's easy to put it directly behind the knee joint, which is a bit too low.
      With any of these braces, even the medical ones, fit and properly putting them on is critical. When I got my Donjoy the company rep actually came to my house and made sure I was putting it on properly.
      I don't have any experience with the Leatt Braces personally. I know some people who really like them, also know some that don't. I think there are pros and cons to each one, and some fit people better than others. Best thing to do is to give it a try!

    How to I get a defiance knee brace myself brother ?

    • @DmitriyAdv
      @DmitriyAdv  Рік тому

      The Defiance custom brace is something that has to be prescribed to you by your doctor. I think you can also get them directly from medical supply places, but you'll be paying out of pocket at that point. Someone from Donjoy will come out, measure your leg, and then the frame is custom made to fit.

      If it helps, my ortho did prescribe me a brace after my acl surgery but months later I no longer have insurance. I went to DJO's website and looked up the regional rep for my area, wrote them an email, told them i have no insurance. They were able to come out and measure me and gave me a good price.

    Is it OK to wear knee braces on outside of pants if the fit is still snug around the knee joint? I ride electric Unicycles off and on road that are still capable of 50mph+ but need to be able to slide on the ground should the power cutout at speed and having something to slide on knees wise on the outside of my pants is quite important as well as impact protection and stopping hyper extension etc.. thanks

    • @DmitriyAdv
      @DmitriyAdv  Рік тому +1

      Knee braces need to be VERY snug to work properly. You’d have to wear yoga pants or tights or something under them.
      Additionally the braces are not particularly abrasion resistant, they’re not sliders. So one crash, even at relatively low speeds, is likely to ruin a $300 brace.
      For those two reasons, if it was me, I’d wear them under my pants. Pants are much cheaper to replace and more abrasion resistant.

      @@DmitriyAdv hmm.. not sure what to do as to avoid injuries/ breaking bones they say it's best you slide as much as possible to decelerate slower (harder deceleration due to not sliding as much is more likely to cause injuries).. if you slide on pants with braces underneath I imagine that is more resistant than directly on the brace knee cap protection itself.. does this mean I need to wear knee braces under my pants AND additionally knee guards like the dual axis leatt knee/shin guards on top of my pants additionally for slideability? (I'm new to knee braces but thought they are designed for both preventing injuries from hyperextension/ twisting in the wrong direction and also from impacts simultaneously.. you're saying that they're not really designed for impact protection at all? Not even some specific brands/ models? I think the podmx k8s have a 5 year warranty as they are designed to be near enough 'bullet proof' and if things break they are replaceable under warranty for example

      @@justinspirational I’ve been getting a few comments/questions from e-bike and e-unicycle riders and have been putting some thought into it. So here is a long response…

      Agree on the sliding and one of the main reasons you want to slide is so you don’t tumble, as that’s where you get hurt. But you want gear that’s designed for sliding, which this dirtbike / mx gear is not. Gear, including pants, designed for riding motorcycles on pavement is designed to slide, so that may be a direction you should consider looking into.

Dirt bike / MX gear is designed to be used off pavement and focuses on impact protection at lower speeds (think below 30mph), light weight, and mobility. So if you’re riding off pavement, you’re looking in the right place. However it’s not designed for abrasion resistance or sliding and most of it will shred into pieces in the first few feet of pavement. So if you’re riding on pavement, this gear is really not designed for your use case and will do a marginal job of protecting you. You should look into pavement motorcycling or maybe supermoto (dirtbike style bikes on go-cart tracks) gear instead. Personally, I only wear knee braces when I’m riding off-road and wear completely different gear when I’m riding on the street.

      Pretty much any knee brace is really only going to protect your ligaments at lower speed crashes. If you’re crashing at 50mph, there is simply too much force, and it’s either going to simply break the brace (best case) or, if that POD MX brace is truly bullet proof, it will break your femur/tibia (worst case). The latter is why I don’t wear knee braces when riding on the street personally. The impact protection is still there, but you can get that via different methods. If you look at what people wear on sport bikes or super moto bikes at track days or races, it’s usually very different from motocross gear. Typically you’ll see a lot more leather and such.

      These braces provide good impact protection, but again, designed for dirt. So think falling down onto rocks or roots at mountain bike speeds, or bumping a tree or a bike with your knee. They’ll do as good of a job at protecting you from impact if you fall down onto a paved highway as soft CE rated armor built into riding pants designed for pavement motorcycling. Again, speaking simply about falling DOWN onto the pavement. No armor or padding is going to do much you if you run into a hard object at 50mph, a 1/2 of padding and some plastic is not 2 feet of crumple zone like in a car, so there is no way for it to absorb that sort of energy. The physics just don’t work that way. The best thing to do is to simply not do that.

Lastly, the BEST way to avoid ligament injury is to build strength and fitness. When I had my ACL done and my surgeon prescribed me the donjoy brace, he said that any brace is only AT BEST 20% effective, you get the best results by having stronger leg muscles and ligaments.

      Please keep in mind that I’m a user, just like you. I’m not a doctor, not a brace engineer, or product designer. My expertise is only as a user of this gear.

      @@DmitriyAdv thank you for such a thorough reply..I appreciate it..I ride both off road and street a lot..I prefer off road more so I guess the short answer is to wear braces when mostly riding off road and my leatt dual axis knee guards when on the street.. the only thing is we often ride both off road and some street in the same day/ ride. I do wear mx dirt bike pants riding off road or on street as they give a bit of extra protection.. in fact I came off my euc at about 28mph going down a steep down hill on street and slid quite a way on my butt but was unscathed in that area (had tail/hip bone protector shorts underneath) and the sliding put a hole in the pants but ok in general

      @@justinspirational there are some offroad pants that are a bit more durable and abrasion resistant than others. They’re usually marketed more for adventure or dual sport riding and have some cordura or similar materials. Klim Dakar or Mojave are good examples

      Per the manual, they're rated CE level 1. This probably varies a bit depending on which sizing foam pieces you use.

      The off the shelf ones you can just buy online, which is what I did. The custom ones you may need to order through a specific provider since they might need to measure your legs.
