I agree that Adorabat is a bland-ish character as of right now, but two episodes that really help this are Outfoxed and Bao Bao’s Revenge, as one shows Adorabat learning that she can’t trust just anyone and the other having her pick up on Mao Mao’s character flaws.

TheonetrueBoxman I’d argue Outfoxed does what this episode wanted to do better. If you wanted to show me that Adorabat is naive, then that does it better.

At the beginning of the episode, Adorabat didn't really see herself as helping because she wasn't directly contributing to the fight. And the thing is, that's a *child's* viewpoint. I know that when I was a kid, when playing RPG's, I was always concerned about *BIG DAMAGE NUMBERS* and characters who didn't have them weren't important. I didn't see the importance of buffs, debuffs, status effects, etc. It was just "hit the bad guy hard until he goes down." And that's what Adorabat wants at the start of the episode: She wants to be the *BIG DAMAGE NUMBERS* character, and she isn't ready for that. The thing is, when she gets the *BIG DAMAGE NUMBERS* she wants, the fact that she can't control it ends up hurting others, like (To use another RPG analogy) getting an item with great stats but causes confusion and berserk status effects to the wearer.
The end of the episode is basically Adorabat realizing that, even without the *BIG DAMAGE NUMBERS,* she can still contribute to the team. She gives up the power, and shortly thereafter realizes that, even if she can't defeat the enemy directly, she can cause them to defeat themselves. She isn't the heavy hitter, she's the status affliction fighter (Confusion, blind, etc), who makes it so that the heavies can do their part a lot easier. There's no shortcut to becoming the heavy hitter.

Personally my favorite parts with her are the moments when it shows she's a bit of a psychopath. Like when she wants to grow huge and starts nashing her fangs together drooling, or is about to throw a brick through a window, or is delighted to be able to use their riot gear and that she blew up the pirates ship.
Hell it's possible all she really wants is action, not necessarily to be a hero. She IS introduced simply wanting a dark souls boss to show up. That. Or it shows how kids sometimes do have these destructive urges

    Now you think about it
I think what Adorabat difference from Finn, Star, K.O and Steven is about they already have skill or power in the beginning show
Finn shown that he has good fighting skills and sword fighting at age of 12.
Star Butterfly (age 14) has magic powers and magic wand (In last season she doesn't need wand anymore). Even without magic she can fight evil monsters and Marco also have fighting skills too.
Anne Boonchuy (Amphibia) (age 13) shown her fighting skills with tennis racket and sword. Sasha is able use sword too.
Steven Universe (age 14) has his mom gem and shield.
K.O has fighting skills at (age 6-11 years) and already has powers
Adorabat proves to be helpful in some situations and doesn't need superpowers.
Also she brings Mao Mao's soft side.

I think you missed that AdoraBat did grow in this episode as she recognized that her leading Ramaraffe into Orangusnake at the beginning of the episode WAS helping, and that she provided a unique dynamic to the team. (Which we'll see more of in Dumpster Diving whenever it comes out.)

  • @GilbertFeathers
    @GilbertFeathers 5 років тому +83

There is one thing i have to point out.
This is episode 3 you're talking about, of course she has yet to get any character growth. You gave examples of Steven universe, SVTFOE, OK KO, but they also happened when the show went along, you mentioned that it was somewhere Ep 10 when Steven starter to show more then just a goofy character. Yeah right now she's a tad bland but cute, but maybe that's the point. She is young and we will see her grow, Mao Mao and Badgerclops already have a history and all, but Adorabat's is only beginning, this is HER origin story and we get to see it completely.
Im pretty sure that once we have had a season or two, she will be a clear grown character, with a layered personality, we just need to see it all grow. and all these episodes are apart of it, she's learning from all of these things. With the helping trick part, in the beginning she didn't see it as helping, but then later she realized that it really was helpful, she learned her lesson.
Anyway got that out of the way
Loved your video uwu always do
And PS your video title and video doesn't really match, i was expecting you to tell us about how Mao Mao, well, dodged a bullet by doing something correctly that otherwise could easily be a trainwreck. But oh well.

    • @pipedream2556

I know what you mean, but the Chowder comparison is a good way to explain how it doesnt make a difference to the point hes trying to make. This wasnt the right angle at which to come at this third episode, they clearly wanted this to be an episode focused on the first baby steps of her growth as a hero and that intention needed a plan that wasnt "reiterate a single character trait we already know until it causes problems then skip over the characterisation or development straight to 'I wont make that mistake again' without us learning anything about the character herself". Chowder isnt a deep show, it's silly fun with character archetypes, but it still came at the idea of its naive character causing more damage while trying to help by showing how he stumbled into helping and liked it and was dumb enough to not even notice he was causing problems and be crushed when his hands were back to normal - all of which is in line with how Chowder isnt JUST naive, hes dense and oblivious, overly trusting and oversharing, gluttonous in such a compulsive way as to allow for cases where he genuinely doesnt mean to eat something he shouldnt have etc, it's all character that is consistent throughout the show. We do learn more about Adorabat as things go on, but what she does have beyond "naive and kind of concerningly bloodthirsty" seems to come rarely and pit of nowhere when it does show up, like they didnt actually HAVE much characterisation for her at this point in the show. Maybe they didnt, and Alpha is just picking up on the signs that they were still working out who their characters even were during the early episodes, but either way that's still something substantially noticable about this episode that hes valid for noticing and trying to figure out why it doesnt work as well as other examples of the same episode format

  • @wrenisprobablyb0red
    @wrenisprobablyb0red 5 років тому +33

I don't feel like Adorabat is quote on quote "shallower" than the other two because her backstory hasn't been explained yet. I mean, to me she feels WILDLY different, for reasons such as this:
She is clearly more interested in power and action than being a hero. She is still a good person who cares and wants people to be happy, but you can clearly see that her moral boundaries are a lot less than with Steven or KO. Whereas those two want to protect everyone and be heroes, it seems like Adorabat desires being cool like Mao Mao. You can see this in this episode for example, where she would prefer keeping her new powers than being an actual hero. Or when badgerclops becomes huge in Ultraclops, her main desire is to cause mayhem and destruction. Or when she desires to be seen as cool so much that she screams at Blue, "DO YOU LOVE YOUR MOMMY!?" which is not something Steven or KO or even Finn would do. Maybe this is because of who they look up to. Steven looks up to the gems, Finn looks up to Billy, and KO looks up to the pow card heroes. Meanwhile, Adorabat looks up to Mao Mao, who is a very different sort of person who feels like being a hero is supposed to get you attention.
She's also kind of a lot edgier and less oblivious then KO or Steven. Adorabat clearly knows what she's doing at all times, and is not afraid of embracing evil/destruction. She DOES have what I like to call Internal Monologue Syndrome, which KO also has. But she's not afraid of doing things like intentionally driving a wedge between Mao Mao and Badgerclops because she wants Mao Mao's undivided attention, and she knows EXACTLY what and why she's doing such a thing.

Sounds too dark for the kid, don't you think? I mean, she's just a kid; probably she have a lot to learn about becoming a hero isn't just about power and destruction. And yeah... Adorabat look up for Mao Mao is quite worrisome because even Mao Mao have his noticable flaws and of course, his severe daddy issue and his trauma in his childhood;not so good father figure to Adorabat tbh.

A character archetype doesn't need to be new to be entertaining. Every character is unique in their own way, even if it's just because of their appearance, abilities, and subtle differences in personality. People need to learn to enjoy something even if they've seen it before to an extent.

I think you got part of your analysis wrong: notably the difference between the first and second time Adorabat gets the villains to fight each other. The first time, Adorabat was running. She didn't recognize the aid she provided because all she could see was that everything she was intentionally doing wasn't working. The second time, since she's drawing on prior experience, she recognizes that what she's doing is actually contributing.
Another minor issue: this episode shows that Adorabat isn't just excited about becoming a hero, she's practically addicted to it. The catastrophe conga line was one thing, and may not indicate anything major on it's own, but that last scene is important. Notice how quick she's ready to go right back to using an item that she provably can't control and she knows she can't control. She's still willing to risk collateral damage to reach the level of Mao Mao and Badgerclops faster. Admittedly, I haven't seen the rest of the series (there's a few different ones I'm working on getting through), but it looks here like Adorabat will need to go past points of no return for lessons to stick.

I really don't think the show's trying to focus itself on Adorabat, which I think is good because plucky little kids aspiring to greatness are a dime a dozen. She makes a good comic relief character and her manic behavior is a good foil to Badgerclops, but Mao Mao is still the main character (in my opinion). Which is something I like, because he's not your typical main character on a CN program. He's serious, he's hard-boiled, he's kind of an asshole, and it's perfect. He doesn't feel like some kind of paragon, he's all kinds of flawed and watching him feels like watching a real person, not a legend.

I think that this episode isn't meant to show Adorabat is impatient and naive, but rather that she feels like a burden. She feels like what she's doing isn't enough. "I didn't help AT ALL" seems like a more figurative statement, rather than a literal one. She wants power because she thinks being powerful will make her more helpful, despite the fact she does help. This is also backed up in other episodes: "The Perfect Adventure," "Breakup," and "Enemy Mime." Being impatient is not a personality trait, but rather a result of something else. I think that Alpha Jay took this episode -- and Adorabat -- at face value. But this show already shows that it doesn't want viewers to do that. It shows that both Mao Mao and Badgerclops have motives and reasons for why they act the way they do. It is unfair to Adorabat as a character to assume this isn't the same for her. It's not that Adorabat is the archetype, but rather that, as an avid viewer of cartoons, that is what you expect from characters like her and therefore focus on. It just isn't screaming in your face.
Also it was said that Adorabat could just give away the Megamech at any point. It's not lazy writing; it was explained. It's the same with the showing the episode is about the power, but telling it is about helping. It's both. Showing and telling are not mutually exclusive.
Also also, in the end, Mao Mao destroys the Megamech because he is jealous. That's why he insults Badgerclops by saying it was poorly designed. This was also mentioned earlier in the episode.
I think that the review does have some good points and points out how shows may need to be clearer with certain executions. However, I suggest taking a more psychoanalytical approach with this show. WHY does Adorabat act X way, not how does Adorabat act. I really hope this all made sense and that I wasn't offensive!!

I felt like Adorabat getting the epiphany that she helped more than she thought earlier was pretty well realized. She is young and the fact that her making the pirates fight among themselves was an accident didn't make her feel like it was her doing. It's like discovering a technique or a new style on accident, and it feels like a fluke at best or it just feels like "I can't take credit for that, these guys are just idiots". Getting the armor let her feel like she was actively contributing, hence when she intentionally gets the pirates to beat each other up it feels more satisfying to her.
Also I'm pretty sure the setup with the armor was that it couldn't be TAKEN from her, but if she took it off then it was fair game. Hence why Orangusnake figured if she wouldn't give it to them they'd just kill her and take it.

First so this is my time before 100k? And love the new intro. So yeah i find the problem about that episode is that mao mao thinks that short cuts doesn't teach you what you want to do or as they called it "montage". I love mao mao but he sometimes can be a weird funny jerk that wants to be a legendary hero and while he does his journey instead of helping her and that dissapoints me. She wants to be a hero and mao doesn't teach that much he only focused on the legendary journey. If there is a dark episode were mao mao loses i hope he learns his lesson and trains her for the epic battle of good vs evil and yes that ending if funny tho.

Good points. However I think that, as you mentioned earlier in the video, the whole point of Adorabat is she's the "growing" character. She starts as a blank slate so that the more experienced duo of Mao Mao and Badgerclops can influence and direct her. It's becoming more clear as the show goes on that she's developing more personality and backstory, though perhaps not as much as I would personally like to see. Still, it's interesting.

Alpha Jay, sometimes when you do something helpful, you don't realize it until later. At the moment she did,xt feel helpful because she wasn't doing any cool or attacking and that's what she was focused on. She did note however that they were fighting each other, which confused her. Later, when she has given up being cool, she recognizes the chance to recreate the situation from earlier AND remembers a feature of the mech that's more harmful than effective.
