    The smell is awesome and appetizing. I have to say that you will either love it or hate it there's no in between.

      I hate it haha, had a jar in my fridge for some time I had to throw it away and clean my fridge and have it open for like a whole day to get rid of the smell. So difficult for me to understand people like it

      @@1lovgren Next time please instead of throwing it away - when you know you don't like it, give it to someone who'd love to eat it! May it be your neighbor, family member, friend, or even total stranger. I know it might just be a shrimp paste jar, but food waste is a serious social problem

    I’m always amazed at the different food palates across the world. I feel like living in the US is a blessing and a curse. It’s a blessing because we have access to so so many different wonderful cuisines from
    across the world, but a curse because the western palate is so focused on salt, fat, and sugar, that I never developed a taste for some of the more fragrant, pungent, nuanced, or subtle delicacies from across the world. It’s always exciting to reprogram my palate and try new things. Unfortunately I am still afraid of shrimp paste.

    It’s very common food ingredient in east Asia. Smell not so nice but very good taste.

    Every house in Indonesia have this. Called terasi, one of must have seasoning in every kitchen

    In my country, Malaysia , we call this as "Belacan" and guess what, almost every household have this 😂

    Fish sauce, shrimp sauce, fermented seafood is amazing.
    You'll either love it or hate it and personally I can't get enough of it sometimes.

    I was SO surprised about this documentary. 😁 I will try it in my next visit to Hong Kong. 🤞
    Fyi, If anyone here interested about shrimp paste, do visit a town called Bintulu in Sarawak, Malaysia-Borneo. Shrimp pastes are seasonally produced. Other places in Sarawak also make it.

    oh man, I recalled going back to HK and went to Tai O. We kept walking until it was a dead end and ended up at this shrimp sauce being dried in the sun.... MAN, the smell is so hardcore... that is some strong stuff!! Pungent I tell ya!!

    Love your show 👍 It is so informative and very educational. It is and ingredient where either you love it or hate it.
    I know I love it, with out shrimp paste..papaya salad would not be papaya salad. This ingredient can be used in soups and many other ways. You just have to know how to use it and what dish to prepare it in.

    A must for stir-fried Ong Choy, aka water spinach available fresh in the summers. Hardcore sauce, so little goes along way. Try not to leave it uncooked, and use straight from bottle to the wok.

    Interesting. I usually use Shrimp Sauce/Paste as a dipping for Hot Chili Pepper. Will try it in Fried Rice next time.

      Try making the fried rice with it and green mango slices. It's a thai dish and really good. :)

      use shallot, bird eye chilli and roasted shrimp paste blend them all up and use it to make fried rice

    I love the kamayan shrimp paste from Phillipines shits so good with kimchi and rice!! And add a little bit in some ramen and it just makes the soup even more tasteful. Eating some right now 🤣 literally just realized I can add some in shrimp sinigang or squid adobo

    Very common paste in South East Asia. With fried rice is common but burger patty is another level.

      thats the chinese diaspora! shrimp paste became verg popularized in Vietnamese soups and noodles bc of Chinese immigrants. during chinas internal conflicts many Chinese spread their craft and foods to Thailand Singapore Phillipines etc any where in south Asia! like lumpia from popiah a Teochew Chinese roll!

    I tried fried rice made from this sauce in a Cantonese restaurant on my respite to Hong Kong, and let's just say it's in another league from most spices, like thyme, rosemary etc.

    Shrimp paste is very salty and a bit tangy. A little goes along way and a great substitute for salt in savory dishes.

    I have a friend that was once cook a fried rice using shrimp paste when I was in college, the problem is we used to live in a small boarding house. The smells permeates through every door and it stayed for days!!! The fried rice taste really great, but since that day the landlord stick a notes in the kitchen...
    "NO SHRIMP PASTE"
    I guess she's one of those people who hate it...

      In this particular case, it sounds pretty close to mandarin expect Cantonese has no retroflex consonants

    Great video, but I can't help thinking, doesn't krill excrement go into the making of the paste? It wouldn't make sense to clean each krill individually, so part of the pungency of the paste is caused, well, by shit! I would not classify this as health--or even healthy--food.
