My Father told me a story from when he was stationed in Hong Kong. There was a skyscraper under construction and it was too large at the time for one contractor, so there were two, a British and a local firm. The British side used steel and the local side bamboo. His fellow sailors laughed at the fact that the locals used bamboo. There was a major storm, and it destroyed the British steel scaffolding, and the local bamboo was just fine.

What are your parents doing not teaching you bamboo only grows naturally in Asia. I mean i would understand if there were other bamboos growing naturally elswhere but there litteraly isn't.
Of all the hundreds of varieties of bamboos they all come from Asia. Seems to me that this would be something significant to know since asian people use it for many many many different things and one would naturally wonder if people all over the world were doing the same. But how could they, there's no bamboo.
But nop, you asked yourself no questions and wandered around thinking silly things for years. Pretty adorable but that's beyond me since even my 8yo daughter wouldn't be sure of something like that without asking questions first.
She wouldn't even believe me if i tried to convince her that the only scaffolding she knows are the only type of scaffoldind existing in the world.

It is sooo important for societies to encourage and invest in not only preserving but encouraging careers in quality craftsmanship. It shouldn't always be about discarding what is old just because it is old. Sometimes old just works and has an immense value in the doing of it. Especially when it is sustainable. I came to HK in 1963 and first saw bamboo scaffolding whilst waiting to cross on the vehicular ferry at Yaumatei, the Ferry St complex was under construction. The big difference between now and then, was 60 years ago the binding was made up of the split skin of the bamboo, whereas now it is flat plastic 'string' with small horizontal ridges to prevent slippage. Princes Building in Central was 20 stories high, nearing completion when in the spring of 1964 a typhoon came through and the central crane collapsed taking down the whole bamboo structure on the Des Voeux Rd side ending up across the tram tracks and onto the front of the old Standard Chartered Building. No trams ran for a couple of days.

it will not fade for long.. if it is really fading at all.. humans love their skills and though some might prefer machines and unecessary processing to grow profit... the machines and profits don't reproduce.. only life grows itself! What beautiful artisanry and love of wonder and natural growth.

Another dead construction tradition is that of Chinese female construction labourers. They were called the Samsui women, and migrated to Malaya and Singapore between the 1920s and 1940s. Although the tradition of these female labourers migrating from China to Malaya and SIngapore ended post-war, in Malaysia, there was a tradition of Chinese female construction labourers up to the 2000s. It was so common that we just accepted it as a norm in Malaysia. I remember in the late 1990s, being involved in a construction project in Kuala Lumpur where the question of payment for construction labourers came up. I was surprised to find out that female labourers were only paid half of male labourers. When I asked why the discrimination, I was told that they weren't as strong as men and could only carry loads which about half of those carried by men. It was a matter of pay for the appropriate work done. However, those female labourers who were skilled, such as bricklayers, plumbers, electricians were paid the same as men because it was then a matter of skill not brawn.

I don't get the "still". I think bamboo is superior to metal scaffolding. It is much more flexible. When you live in 20/F and need to fix the split-type air-con, you need a small scaffolding (maybe 4,5 feet long) to let you climb out from the window and walk to the air-con. There is no way to make it with metal scaffolding.

  • @brianho6625

Technically speaking....unlike steel / aluminum scaffold, which are used for heavy-duty temporary supporting works (i.e. for supporting faslework for pouring concrete for bridge construction and etc....) Bamboo scaffold is limited for man-access purpose only (i.e. temporary walkway / access outside a building wall and etc....). In other words, bamboo scaffold are not suitable for the use in heavy-duty temporary supporting works. Also its fire proof are vulnerable...
However the erection cost for Bamboo Scaffold at least 2 to 3 times cheaper than steel / aluminum scaffold for large scale temporary works. So Bamboo Scaffold has its unique market in Hong Kong. Bamboo scaffold also considers as an ancient craftsmanship but also has practical value in modern time. So such skill and tradition deserves for preservation.

In India, bamboo is widely used for scaffolding for almost all buildings except for maybe the few which are more than 40 stories high,, Bamboo is cheap and is plentiful in the wild,,
As far as I know, since we have limited softwood in India,, even cheap paper is made of bamboo,, Expensive paper is made of imported softwood,,
