Probably the only time in NHL history when a guy scored his team's 11th goal in a game and it was: 1) an important goal, and 2) worthy of a celebration.
So many people say that. I'm not sure, but I have a feeling that it has been kind of avoided by Leafs management. Because it is so closely tied to the infamous Harold Ballard era.
I used to be seeing different vintage Leaf jerseys in certain sports stores, including that one. I’m not so sure now , since Matthews and the others have arrived. And some of the stores have closed….
I have trouble remembering who was doing the colour, it could be Mickey Redmond like you said. I'm pretty sure that's Jim Hughson doing the play by play though. He was doing weekday games for the Leafs back then.
Edmonton oilers most exciting, most entertaining hockey team I've ever seen - I remember quite a few games back then that turned. Into shootouts reminiscent of modern day all-star games
I remember coming back from a college party to my room. I turn on the TV and our local station would have a running ticker going on all the hockey boxscores that evening. It would literally be typed across the screen. When it began they showed Edmonton - 9 since they were the visiting team and I thought, "Oh of course they did." Then followed with Toronto - 11 and I went "Whaaaaaattt!"
It was a pretty wild game. Lol. The one star player missing from this game is the greatest Leafs defenceman of all time Borje Salming, he was out with an injury. I would have liked to see him involved in a wild game like this, but then again it might not have gone this way with him in the lineup.
@@JeffTheLeafsFan as a Leaf fan at that time there weren't many highlights, but beating a high flying Oilers team in a high scoring shootout, was one of them.
Love this era of hockey. Goalies were not butterfly sofa wearing generic robots. It was about speed, skating, passion...unpredictable...the rivalries were intense. you didnt get many of those 1-0, 0-0, 2-1 snoozefests like what happened post 1995 That ovation on the Frycer goal to make it 10-9 was magic. MLG was a madhouse
Thank you!!! That was the high scoring 80's for you! Lol. I'm not sure why, but for some reason your comment doesn't seem to show up in my notifications. I just noticed it now on my channel dashboard.
@@JeffTheLeafsFan that’s somewhat of a fallacy. They were always at least in the top 10 in least goals allowed. Certainly not near the defensive brilliance of the 76-79 Canadiens or 80-83 Oilers, but they were more than competent. Still, their offense stood out above everything else.
Awesome 80s hockey. “Just the goals”….still took three and a half minutes. “The second star, with 1 goal and 5 assists, J. Kurri ( funny, 6 points and only 2nd star)…..Courtnall third star? Should have been T. Bernhardt… he did not prevent that 10th goal! Good upload buddy, fans got their moneys worth.

So much of it was because of the equipment though. The equipment was heavy, especially when it got wet. And it would have less padding in order not to weigh a ton, so it covered less net, and goalies were covered in bruises. It really wasn't until the late 80's and early 90's when equipment got bulkier, lighter, and didn't absorb water because it was made out of synthetics. That's when goalies started covering the bottom part of the net more.
and somehow he stopped Wayne on a breakaway. He can always show his kids and grandkids that clip (and make sure the goal he gave up 2 seconds later is cut out)
The leafs would go on to defeat the Blackhawks in 3 straight in the playoffs then lose in 7 in the second round to the blue's, and the blue's would lose to the flames in 7 and the flames would lose the Stanley cup finals to the habs what great memories

Lol! True
There have many games where that would be the case.
Back when goalies were 5"6 and 150 lbs. This is just brutal to watch.
Hockey just looks so different from then to now, and some BEAUTIFUL goals
It's changed a ton over the years, who knows how Gretzky would have done trying to score on today's goalies.

keep this content coming. i remember this game and man does the nostalgia hit hard.

That is Mickey. Being a Red Wings fan since forever, his voice is unmistakable. This was his last season broadcasting with the Leafs I believe.

Mirko Frycer’s finest game in a Leaf uniform, I’m sure!

They were basically like an all-star team back then, so they played like it I guess! Lol!
The Leafs also had a 10-8 win over Chicago a few years earlier.
They had some high scoring games in those days.

If this was a playoff game, Fuhr would not have let in a 9th goal. He was at his best when everything was on the line.
That's what he was known for!
The Oilers in the 80’s had to score a lot of goals because they gave up so many at their end.
They might have been the only team in history that won Stanley Cups by pretty much only relying on offense.
In 2012 there was an Oiler game like this against Chicago where everything they shot at the Hawks net went in. The oilers were shit that year.
