  • Are sprinters actually lazy, or do they just approach their training with a totally different mindset? We’re going to dive into what it means to be a sprint swimmer, and how sprint training differs from distance training.

I am a distance swimmer and always admire those sprinters. Both types of swimmers deserve respect for the simple fact that swimming requires a skill set that is remarkable for no other reason than the athlete is moving quickly and efficiently through water. 😊

I don't think it's fair to say one discipline is better than the other. There is so much to admire about both sprinters and distance swimmers!!! 👏🏊‍♀️👏

It's obvious : to sprint is huge anaerobic effort in a very short time that requires recover. The art of distance swimming is keeping constant fast speed, gliding, finding balance with breathing, heartpace, and pain. By doing so, my heart and breathing become stronger, and my red cells are building up. Although i don't hurt my muscles as much as if i was practicing sprints - and therefore not building up so much muscles - my intense distance training ends up making me quite good at sprinting as well. I like to end my training session with sprints. The two disciplines are great and complementary.

Great points, Axel! Thanks for sharing - we love a sprint set at the end of a swim workout too :)

I like sprints more than distance because I get a better endorphin rush from them than I get from distance swims. Interesting too, is that the sprinters go so much farther off the wall for their underwaters than distance swimmers who come up just past the flags. Pretty sure when I am swimming faster sets, I burn more calories than I do when swimming distance. I do like to max my pulse rate!

Glad to see that you are using the term 'gallop' for freestyle, and that you recognize it. Now, when are you doing a video on how to swim it?

Sprinters are born. Distance swimmers are made. If only I had a fast twitch fiber in my body!!

I admire sprinters but for me a long glide is magical and I can never be in the water long enough.

This is very similar to running. Sprinters do everything so much slower and more relaxed. They conserve energy between sets.

I am constantly overtaken by some incredible sprinters (Both men and women) sometimes twice in 100m, and they are very impressive, but I get far more enjoyment from spending a lot more time in the water listening to my music for a couple of hours - so relaxing.

I'm a distance guy and I have a friend who is a sprinter I used to call him lazy because he always chilling on the side but at the end of the day we do the same amount

Exactly it’s all about your pace/density. I did 5k routinely in practice but I was a sprinter and no one swam more than that at practice they just swam different

I am an awful sprinter. I admit it.
Should not compare the two as in who's a better swimmer/athlete. It's not fair to either athlete, because just as you demonstrated in your video, the two are very different. I think people enjoy watching sprinters best though, because it's fast and more exciting. As a mid distance/distance swimmer, I think sprinters are the stars. Who doesn't love to watch a fast pace race?

What can you say about swimmers who are doing both? Just saw a video about a swimmer trying to break 20 in the 50 while also swimming the 1500. I’d like to hear what coaches think about this particular athlete and if this is the future of swimming

I love it all, but I'm a distance guy because I'm a triathlete. I spend so much time training the catch and pull and only use a 2bk. Not trying to waste my legs!
To me though, you just can't distance some strokes. Could you imagine a 500 fly? 😅

I have found that most of the sprinter in clubs are clicky as hell and just rude. No need for it. We all started at the beginning.
It inspires me to be better but I certainly don't want to be around them as I'm sure the feeling is mutual.

@@myswimpro They also seem to excel in disciplines where more free movement is involved, utilising their natural physical abilities. Swimming is much more about precise technique, which is less of their cup of tea.
