    Hey Jim, been especially loving your last few vids. harvests are coming on nicely! I've just pruned my determinate tomato plant and have seen a good few tomatoes growing so they should get more sun and light this week. Thankfully things are starting to look decent!

      Thank you! Glad you enjoy them! Pruning as in trimming leaves or pruning side shoots?

      Trimming leaves and some branches with no fruit. The thing grew into a green heap so no fruit was getting light. Took away some of the unnecessary bits

    you should plant garlic and marigolds near them it helps stop loads of pests. i also crush garlic and add it with water and stray around the edge of my beds helps so much

    5:54 Your peppers are as good as those supplied by Riverford!
    We won a competition for a free supply of their boxes and their peppers had the same grubs in them.

      Wow, haha! I suppose that comes with organic gardening. I think it's some sort of moth or butterfly that's responsible? Not sure what to do but companion planting might be my best option. Perhaps marigolds

    A lovely harvest Jim! Those peppers look fine ~ My sweet pepper plant flowers are rotting at the back of my poly tunnel l guess I’ve overwatered them? Hoping they will dry out and produce something eventually ~ grown from seed so yes I’m invested for sure 🌱

    I’ve bought little net bags this year to put over the fruits, don’t know if it will work. Last year all my peppers had holes both inside polytunnel and ones planted outside.

    I’ve found cabbage whites lay eggs on peppers. I don’t think it’s their preference but 2 seasons I’ve had a butterfly trapped in the greenhouse and a few weeks later, similar damage to yours. I do now spray BT which works but it can be pretty pricy.

    My peppers are all the same, waste of time growing them really until I can find out how to prevent the damage.

    It’s been a year of pests for sure 😖 I had one single Kohl Rabi survive the slug onslaught during the non stop rainy season and it has been bulbing up beautifully, just went to water it today and something has taken a chunk out of it 😢 At least my tomatoes seem to be starting to produce a decent crop 🍅🍅

      I've found slugs do love nibbling on kohl Rabi. A real pain! What varieties of tomato are you growing?

      @@downtoearthwithjim this year I’m growing Couer de Bouef (beefsteak), Tigerella, Honeycomb (very sweet orange cherry), Tumbling Tom and Yellow Pear. Have just started getting a small harvest off all except the yellow pear. Honeycomb is winning in the taste stakes although the Couer de Bouef is pretty good as well.

      Not sure if the weather has just been ideal for them to thrive. Lots of what I assume are some sort of moth or butterfly laying eggs in the poly with it being cooler

    Hi jim. What can I grow in September with children? Thank you 😊

    • @downtoearthwithjim
      @downtoearthwithjim  2 місяці тому

      Hi Debbie 😊 August is a more ideal month for late summer seed sowing. But September has some options: fast growing crops like salad leaves, spring onions, and radish still grow quick in September and can give a crop before it turns cold. Many people start their garlic in September and October to grow over winter (including myself). Most herbs can be grown year round especially if you're growing them on a windowsill in winter. Those may be a good option for children as it can be good for sensory 😊

      @downtoearthwithjim  2 місяці тому +1

      Yeah me neither. These did amazing back in 2021 never had a perfect season with them since. I'm happy with the size of the peppers just a shame about the fruit worms and the plants are much smaller for some reason (weather?)

    • @Jimmy-gm3vj
      @Jimmy-gm3vj 2 місяці тому

      When you plant your peppers out in the polytunnel, continue removing the flowers for a few weeks, it allows the plant put all of its energy into green growth, also feed them once a week, you will have big strong plants with lots of peppers, even in these so called summer months, keep up the good work 👍@@downtoearthwithjim
