That penalty shot rule to force OT that Steve casually mentions, is f***ing brilliant. Not only does it stop players taking late penalties but the penalty shot would be so high stakes!
That was the greatest plug for anything ive heard in my life. It was pure bliss start to finish, its like if they made a sequel to the godfather part 2. Id rate it
Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed the interview with Thomas Hickey. The questions were thoughtful and the answers even moreso. It's cool to see that from a recently retired NHL'er, hope you guys can get him back on the pod!
Imagine, a team is up by one. 1 minute left, faceoff. Every player on the ice just pins their opponent to the boards with a stick and holds for a minute. The puck is untouched somewhere in the middle. Every referee holding their hand high for a penalty. Goalies don't know what to do. Minute passes, the clock expires, they've won. Beautiful.
Steve and Jesse thoughtfully comparing Meier's suspension and McDavid's (then-pending) suspension: "[1 game] is the direction they probably want to go..." Department of Player Safety suspending McDavid for 3 games, 1 hour later: "Keep guessing, kids! We just spin a wheel for the number!"
I think that when a penalty happens in the final minute, if the team going to the power play doesn't score during the delayed penalty, the clock should restart from the time the infraction occured with the power play intact
My mother has been in a coma from a car accident since August. Today we made the tough decision to pull the plug. I was listening to this podcast as the doctor came in and pulled the cord, Adam’s plug was so good that my mom just woke up in perfect health. Then she correctly picked the lottery numbers. 12/10
Didn't realize Hickey was in broadcasting now. Really liked him as a player, so cool to see him make this change. Real well spoken guy, can see why Amazon signed him!
Oh just what I needed after spending my sick day watching events in DC, well apart from making me laugh which results in a massive coughing fit each and every time. Absolutely would recommend your live show plug to others.
Myers & mcdavid getting 3 games this season, and matthews getting 2 games when he cross checked dahlin, is basically just inflation in the nhl. Its all going up⬆️
Greetings from Sweden! Maddie is right! Calle Jarnkroks name is pronounced the way she claims. I dont care what the translation guide in Toronto says😂 Maybe they’re just trying to make it more pronouncable for north americans👍. And also, his first name is pronounced exactly the way you say Khaled, but without the ”d” at the end. Not Call-ee.. Now you guys know!❤️❤️❤️ thanks for a AWESOME podcast! I’m 4 years in now.
I already don't care about the 4 nations cup, and hearing the ticket prices make me really not want to watch it. I don't really see it as a best on best tournament
Even announcement was a solid 7.5/10. You gave most of the right details. Adam, You'd get a solid 8.5/10, If i didn't have to go to the link to figure out when. Was gunna give a 7 but then you said the link in the description for the tickets. So the date was out there. Just needed to look for it. keep up the good work guys always interesting podcasts
Guys you know that 4 nations ad that plays all the time right now? Who is the guy that says “for the maple leaf”? Is it Ryan Oreilly and if it is…why? All the other people in the ad are people who made one of the teams.
I actually asked the in-arena announcer for Lorenz's former team the Hurricanes how he announced Lorenz's name. He said the player kept changing his mind but had settled on LOW-rints at the time.
The 4 Nations prices are definitely part of the NHL trend towards price gouging its fans. The Blues are just seeing a slight hit, because they suckered their season ticket base into long term deals to get Winter Classic priority, but even with those people taking huge losses to resale tickets, the team isn’t selling out their games this year. And even with a 50%+ jump in ticket prices (I’m not talking resale prices), the Blues are still one of the more affordable tickets.
The NHL follows this saying with the 4Nations: "If you do a job badly enough, you never get asked to di it again". If they sell these over-priced tickets, great! If not, you have an excuse to scrap the whole thing forever.
My favorite pitch for late penalties is that the entire penalty has to be served before the game ends. Tackle someone with twelve seconds left? Defend that penalty for the next two minutes, like usual, not the next twelve seconds, which is ridiculous.
We have to talk more about how Willy gets atleast a breakaway per period absolutely insane whatever was bothering him during that slump is definitely gone now but do you guys think he’ll crack 50 goals?
Steve, my sweet boy, I’m not sure if you know the definition of “cheating”. Garland knew what he was doing in that moment. He was risking a penalty that for some reason didn’t get called. He knew that a penalty in that moment would’ve been better than allowing McDavid the opportunity to score. The blame here is solely on the refs and the league. The refs need to make a call there, and I completely agree that the league should look into changing penalties for infractions that occur late in games. Also, Adam and Jesse, I’m disappointed in you guys for allowing Steve to rant about this without interrupting and having him clarify how this is considered “cheating”
ADAM = Shame is an unpleasant emotion that can stem from a feeling of guilt or inadequacy. It can be caused by a number of factors, including poor choices, bullying, or trauma. Shame can also be internalized, meaning it's turned inward and becomes a deep-seated belief. This sums up my thoughts on the date . Minus 10. GO HABS GO
On the myers Cross check, he finishes his check then gets slashed by Bouchard so turns around slashes back then bouch continued to skate towards him. Looks like Myers was aiming chest and it rose as bouch lifted his arms. Unfortunate but unlike McDavid wasn't aiming to injure. Equal suspensions make sense to me.
You say ticket prices are high at the bell center for 4 nations, but it's pretty much on par with ticket prices for any Habs game which is why I've yet to see one in person. I'm certain those tickets will sell
The NFL has a rule that the game can't end on a defensive penalty. If the defense commits a penalty and the time expires the offense gets one more play.
Myers tried to hit Bouchard on the boards who had the puck and got caught with an elbow, then everyone else started fighting, and Bouchard came over to Myers and they both tried to cross-check eachother. So it was built up as well
The ticketing take doesn’t consider all information or enough research. When tickets first went on sale, they were $200-$400 in the lower bowl. I know this because I literally considered buying them during the presale & the first day of general sale. The reason it’s now $900 is because it’s Ticketmaster and Canada has no laws against regulating prices, especially against dynamic pricing. Those ticket prices will drop once again closer to Feb. 12, if not sold. I also signed up to get info about premium offers and special deals for the 4 Nations tournament, I’ve been offered club seats, suites, and other special experience offers between $300-$900. So yeah, $1K is what the NHL has priced this tournament at.
Philippe Myers is absolutely a French speaker, guys. We just don't pronounce Philippe with a big emphasis on the "I" like they do in France. It's not the same as your English pronunciation, but that pronunciation is probably the closest you'll get to saying it right as non French speakers.
Garland was grabbing onto McDavid, but McDavid also had Garland on the ice for a while too and was actually punching him in the back of the head, which in some leagues is a penalty. The refereeing was dog water in this game, where they missed a pretty blatant high stick in the throat by McDavid earlier in the game. Bouchard skated towards Myers, did the flinch thing that gets the other guy to raise his stick but doesn't follow through, and Bouchard got crosschecked. A lot of frontal crosschecks to the face are triggered by the other guy faking bringing his hands and stick up, but you're always still responsible for your stick.
You'd need a reverse angle to confirm but when they fell to ice initially I believe Garland actually grabbed McDavids left arm to keep to him down and then McDavid started hitting him in the head. Once McDavid got free, Garland pulled him down again. Given the situation it makes alot more sense for Garland to keep McDavid out of action than vice versa. This isn't a defence of McDavid, he deserves a suspension it's really just the continuation of the Refs suck theme
I think Adam is right referring to saying he mentioned the game they're watching. I would more likely remember that than an actual date, and could just look up the date of the game easily. If that makes sense!
based on the pronounciation guide, the Matthews in Auston Matthews looks like it's instead said as "MA-Thooz" without the "y" sound, compared to "MA-th'yew" in Matthew Knies
As someone who lives in Moncton (where it is very French by the way) and knows someone who watched Philippe Myers grow up, I can attest that Adam was correct and it is pronounced PHIL - eep. Sorry Jesse, I trust someone who knew Philippe his whole life over the Leafs who have been letting me down my whole life.
Goalies really are crazy. I remember talking about Murray/Jarry the way you guys talked about Joe Woll😂. Jars and Muzz were world beaters in the AHL, just constant domination, showed up in the NHL and found instant success as starters (albeit on much different scales). Hope Woll can stay healthier than Murray and perform better than Jars
myers/mcdavid getting one more game than they thought (3 games each)..sure. but it also probably means that the next edm/van game is gonna be VERY physical..
With respect to the Garland / McDavid incident: you can't just boil everything down to: "What if that was a Stanley Cup clinching game?!?!" You can't dismiss everything that led up to that moment over one play. There's nothing the league or the officials can do to mitigate that from happening in the waning seconds of a game. It's on the players not to end up on the shitty side of that equation. If they couldn't do it in the 59:50 prior, then they weren't the better team.
Steve doesn't know what he's talking about. Lets be honest, his brand is built on reactions... We watch him for the reactions, not because he knows what hes talking about.
@killerofprimes I think he's both. A rabid fan AND a decent hockey commentator. This dynamic between Steve, Adam, and Jessie is very good. I enjoy their content as much as Steve's meltdowns.
The reality is the ticket prices for the 4 Nations are set by the market, they are not gonna keep tickets up for 900+ USD and not have them sold. If they put them up for sale for bargains scalpers would snatch them up and they'd be the ones making the extra money. The prices will come down if they don't sell, or they'll sell if the NHL properly estimated demand. We'll see. But with the reality of scalper markets today there is no "cheap" unless its just not a popular event. If people are willing to spend tons of money (and a lot of people have that kind of money) it'll happen.
If now finally clicked why they put Montembeault on the team it’s because it’s in Montreal they needed a player from Montreal to try and get Canadiens fans to go and he was the “best” option it all makes sense.
i remember the leafs booth talking about it in game and how they spoke to the dad and he goes by lawr-ence which confused them cos they thought it was the way jesse was saying the name
They can call a goal for an egregious penalty that directly prevented a goal at any time right? Trip a guy through clear on an empty net: auto goal. How do you decide an overt penalty away from the puck gets a goal awarded though? Would the refs ever make that call? This one was blatant but it also wouldn't have raised any eyebrows if not for the match penalty infractions. Personally I think they should call the penalty and let the game over-run and blow the final whistle at the penalty's conclusion. It's never made sense to me that in the dying seconds any team can get away with murder and every single one of them does it.
As Canes fan: If it would be Jarvis for Miller trade, Miller is gonna be booed in every game he plays in Lenovo Center as long as he is in NHL. The Canes fans will riot if Jarvis is traded away, he is the beating heart and life giving soul of the team. Jarvis is the key to the team
Remember Petro getting only a game for TOMAHAWKING Drai's wrist? Then somehow, Nurse gets the same amount for an agreed-upon fight? DoPS stays on the dart board of discipline.
We're professionals. 👍
Adam should have doubled down and when prompted say the wrong date like he usually does.
Always.
You try to be.
@@deltagolavista1it’s my favorite bit of his 😂
Can't get the date wrong if you don't say the date. 🙃
I think if i had to rate Adam's intro id give it a
Such an amazing plug for the live show. It transformed my life. My dad came back with the milk. My food cooks perfectly now. I give it a 0/10
Adam before the read: “it’s 8 out of 10”
Adam during the read: Stumbles through part and forgets date.
We love ya tho:)
Look he took a puck to the head, give him a break
Great intro Adam! Very concise, glad you provided location, and start time. I give it a
From what I recall, Lorentz’ mom and dad have different opinions on how to pronounce the last name 😂
Id rate it
Another live Boston Pizza sounds great! If only I knew what day it was happening....
Wes McCauley and Chris Lee should also be suspended for completely losing control of that situation.
Both terrible officials with multiple high profile games getting out of hand (Lee in Boston, Game 2 2019)
Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed the interview with Thomas Hickey. The questions were thoughtful and the answers even moreso. It's cool to see that from a recently retired NHL'er, hope you guys can get him back on the pod!
I’m with Steve n this. Rule change: Last minute of play, goalie pulled, penalty committed… penalty shot.
Steve - Wes MacCauley is incompetant
Steve 5 minutes later - Lets give Wes the option of giving penalty shots in the last 10 seconds....
Beautiful.

Phillipe Myers actually graduated from a French school in Dieppe
love seeing Steve with the djurgården jersey, hoping he'll add the börje Salming brynäs jersey one day
that was definitely one of the intros ever
Great show !
That plug was so good I no longer have to go the pot shop
Both Garland and McDavid should have got penalties in the lead-up to the crosscheck.
Spot on about the four nations ticket pricing. It is shortsighted.
that phonetic sheet was useful, and also a mess...
the phonetic version of the matthews were totally different... how? lol
can we get 5 big booms for adam’s intro?
I think that when a penalty happens in the final minute, if the team going to the power play doesn't score during the delayed penalty, the clock should restart from the time the infraction occured with the power play intact

Perfect timing
Boys, it's pronounced Laur-ents or even Ler-Ents, not Lawrence. I worked with his sister, my wife knows his other sisters.

It would be jokes if the Leafs dressed Cendric Pare in the last Leafs Habs game of the Season when they are resting guys.
Help! I'm wandering around the Boston Pizza in Stouffville, and they're looking at me strangely. When am I? Where am I? Is this a Kafka novel?

Watching this episode feels like watching Schindler's list, and that red dress girls just sticks out 😂
I gotta give that plug 6 big BOOMS out of 10

I love how Dangle denied the fact that almost any NHL player would do that if they are in Garland's spot.
I think that was his whole point, that that's a problem that needs to be addressed.
I disagree.

Why do you think McDavid wasn't suspended for the 4 Nations tournament. Maybe he decides to take a personal leave of absence during the tournament?
As a pretty hardcore hockey fan who consumes podcasts/radio shows on top of my team's games, I probably won't even watch the Four Nations.
Hope he only gets one game so Steve have to fill his diaper to the brim 🤣
Philippe Myers is absolutely a French speaker, guys. We just don't pronounce Philippe with a big emphasis on the "I" like they do in France. It's not the same as your English pronunciation, but that pronunciation is probably the closest you'll get to saying it right as non French speakers.
If McDavid cared even 2% this much when Skinner gets his head taken off maybe people wouldn't beat the crap out of the Oilers lol
On mcdavid, if he gets two games, Vancouver will play Edmonton again without their captain
I hate to say it but Adam’s attitude towards foreign names is very colonial.
Guys. Its a fundraiser tournament, why are you shocked at ticket prices?

This isn't a defence of McDavid, he deserves a suspension it's really just the continuation of the Refs suck theme
I think Adam is right referring to saying he mentioned the game they're watching. I would more likely remember that than an actual date, and could just look up the date of the game easily. If that makes sense!
For once I completely agree with you guys. It's wild McDavid and Meyers got the same 3 games when Meyers actions were so much more egregious.
based on the pronounciation guide, the Matthews in Auston Matthews looks like it's instead said as "MA-Thooz" without the "y" sound, compared to "MA-th'yew" in Matthew Knies
Just for clarification Moncton nb is indeed very French
As someone who lives in Moncton (where it is very French by the way) and knows someone who watched Philippe Myers grow up, I can attest that Adam was correct and it is pronounced PHIL - eep. Sorry Jesse, I trust someone who knew Philippe his whole life over the Leafs who have been letting me down my whole life.
Guys, Lorentz is pronounced LAWR-ence, not the same as Lawrence. It's closer to Adam's pronounciation than Laurence.
100%. I worked with his sister. There is a reason it's spelled Lorentz and not Lawrence lmao
I like Steve’s idea with super late game penalties! I’m sure there’d be controversy but it adds stakes to situations like grandlund
simon benoit is pronounced see-MON, not see-MOHN
Simone (the female equivalent) is pronounced See-MOHN
confirmed by french canadian
Goalies really are crazy. I remember talking about Murray/Jarry the way you guys talked about Joe Woll😂. Jars and Muzz were world beaters in the AHL, just constant domination, showed up in the NHL and found instant success as starters (albeit on much different scales). Hope Woll can stay healthier than Murray and perform better than Jars
What will happen first ? Gta6 being released or Adam finally telling us the end of the toilet story
Seems to me that there were, at least, three other people in studio that could have noticed Adam missing the date. Shared blame to go around. 😛
myers/mcdavid getting one more game than they thought (3 games each)..sure. but it also probably means that the next edm/van game is gonna be VERY physical..
I give that plug a solid 6/9 for nice and byest
How about JT Miller and N.Höglander for Koteanemi, Svechnikov and a 3rd pick ?
Fair warning for Leafs fans from a Flyers fan - Phil Myers is not an NHL defenseman
That's what they said about Forsling
This intro is amazing lmao
In Adam's defence, Steve and Jesse both missed it, and Steve even said great job.
With respect to the Garland / McDavid incident: you can't just boil everything down to: "What if that was a Stanley Cup clinching game?!?!"
You can't dismiss everything that led up to that moment over one play. There's nothing the league or the officials can do to mitigate that from happening in the waning seconds of a game. It's on the players not to end up on the shitty side of that equation. If they couldn't do it in the 59:50 prior, then they weren't the better team.

I would prefer if a penalty is called, with less time left in reg than the penalty would last, the game goes until the penalty is over.
