BTW, you should also feed ADSB Exchange. They don't censor the open unencrypted data like FA24, et al.

Hi Ehud42, thanks for the advice, I'll look into that, thanks for watching 👍🏽

Unfortunately, now ADSB Exchange has sold out and gone corporate. Users are worried it might lose the uncensored aspects of the platform as a result.

You should have just put the pi in a waterproof casing and PoE Ethernet hat... no loss at all, and no need for the active USB cable that creates interference. And it's coaxial cable, not aerial cable.

Hi Carsten thanks for the comments. There seem to be many ways to skin this preverbal cat. The way I did it was just one of them. I have considered trying a Pi Zero W very close to the antenna (15cm) and just running power up to the Pi. It's possible the Pi won't cope but I'm not inundated with aircraft so it might be an option. The only issue with this is accessibility to the Pi being up the pole. I've always understood aerial cable is made up from coaxial cable, hence the description in the video. Thanks for watching 👍🏽

The RTL dongles are not that great for this purpose. Depending on where you live, maybe a 1090 band pass filter may help.

Hi, yes agreed, normal SDR dongles are not the best but do work. The SDR Blog dongle in my video had a 1090 bandpass filter in the LNA and the Flight aware dongle had a 1090 filter built in. We are bit out in the sticks here so these may or may not have helped me. Still had some fair results considering there is a great big hill directly behind the house shielding aircraft traffic until it is right over head!

Can you connect this to the buildings communal antenna from inside a flat?

No, unfortunately not. I would always run a dedicated antenna and cable direct to the receiver, in my case a Raspberry Pi. The antenna also needs to be the right sort for the frequency you are trying to pick up, 1090Mhz in this case.

Flight Radar 24 are useless though, whenever I hear something fly over it's not listed there.

Hi Tommy, I've not noticed that on mine but certainly not all aircraft are available with FR24, which is a shame. Thanks for watching 👍🏽

    Transponder info is NOT RADAR
