  • Can emotional connections to our identities justify restrictions on free speech? This provocative episode of Heterodox Out Loud explores the deep tension between personal relationships and public discussions. Host John Tomasi sits down with Jilian Lederman, a graduate of Brown University and a strong advocate for free speech. Together, they examine the complex landscape of free expression on university campuses, focusing on the oppressor-oppressed dynamic and its impact on intellectual diversity and dialogue.

We also explore her op-ed for The New York Times and her efforts to promote open inquiry and robust debate through various initiatives and student organizations. Very salient. Not only is the "oppressor-oppresssed" the wrong measurement, it is a poisonous, calculated diversion, for this dynamic presumes the answer before an argument is even made, by the sheer weight of its dogma. This discussion is essential, informative and is hopeful. It is well reasoned, honest and very well made. Good job, HxA.

My great grandad was a confederate and he too wanted a two state solution, sad to see people advocating for one state and valuing hate over heritage! Stand strong Israel!

When people use words and phrases, they mean to be saying what THEY mean to be saying. Taking offense without determining what they mean is infantile. More often than not it becomes a deliberate distraction where you change the subject in order to dismiss what they are saying.

Not understanding the meaning of words and phrases before you shout them into public spaces is irresponsible and infantile. This isn't a case of "Everyone's reality is different and worthwhile." These are life and death issues, and we're not on a playground.

@@AndyColglazier Yes, and these are life and death issues where there are war criminals causing almost all of it, against the other side that has been aggressed against since 1947.
You DO know that "from the river to the sea" started out as a slogan touted by Zionists, meaning Israel should conquer and ethnically cleanse that entire region, right?

So, unlimited free speech on campus according to Heterodox but not if it's against my own people.

Thank you. We certainly don't hear enough Jewish voices on a daily basis. No matter where we are or where we go..

      Do you mean on here?
Jewish people are what, three percent of the US population...do you know what percentage of media, celebrities, and political talking heads they are?

It's ironic that "from the river to the sea" started as a Zionist slogan, meaning that Israel should ethnically cleans and rule over that entire area.
The hypocrisy of their whining when the Palestinians use it in a less vicious way is absurd.

Why are you lying about the origion of that phrase? I knew enough about the history of the region to know it was sus but further research showed your claim to be utter fiction.

@@joelanderson5285 Oh yes, there are no psychopaths in Israel bragging that they will eventually rule over an ethnostate of Greater Israel, from the Nile to the Euphrates.

She’s defending the ones who are brainlessly spouting rhetoric. Its embarrassing

She's humanizing kids who deserve the charity to acknowledge they probably aren't promoting genocide. It takes ignorance on both sides to simplify things to "oppressor/oppressed" and "zionist/antisemites". It's a narcissistic view of the world to embrace victimhood and gaslight everyone else into accepting your take.

There's nothing more brainless than defending the ethnic cleansing going on in Palestine.
