    ABOUT TIK 📝
History isn’t as boring as some people think, and my goal is to get people talking about it. I also want to dispel the myths and distortions that ruin our perception of the past by asking a simple question - “But is this really the case?”. I have a 2:1 Degree in History and a passion for early 20th Century conflicts (mainly WW2). I’m therefore approaching this like I would an academic essay. Lots of sources, quotes, references and so on. Only the truth will do.

@@LaOwlettthere is also nothing quite like the satisfaction in proving a teacher wrong.
You go through school being taught through structure that everything the teacher says is the absolute truth, all there is to know or the source of authority on a subject. I remember being told by my teachers to stop reading around the subjects because my answers were outside of the scope of the marking criteria and they were having to mark me down. Biggest ones were history, economics and critical thinking ( they were actually teaching critical theory and I was pretty must derailing the whole class). I did my coursework on the "privatisation " of the railways. Hadn't even thought about that in ... I think it's literally 20 years now

I was in highschool back in the 1980's when I learned the "recommended" sources such as books and articles were almost the only accepted source.
Reading other books on a given or parallel subject, even when sighting them in the notes, was often discouraged and cause for being marked down.
The situation is much worse today. Repeating anything beyond the party line can result in a failing grade.

Hey Tik, don't apologize for not putting up your "normal" content. Your takes are always refreshing and worthwhile to hear, regardless of the topic. A lot of the time when you put out videos like this, I think you're imagining that people will be disappointed much more so than any actual disappointment. The videos you're putting up this week sound really interesting and cool. As long as you're speaking authentically and from your heart, which you do basically all the time, your work is fantastic. Keep it up mate!

Before I publish, I always think my videos are bad, and that you guys will be disappointed with them. I was shocked that people enjoyed last week's video. It's incredibly rare when I think "okay, I've done a good job on that one", and you probably can't guess which ones I actually thought were good before they went out (there's probably only half a dozen of them).

@@TheImperatorKnight I know exactly what you mean, it's the creative person's curse. I experience the same thing in my line of work. You view your own product from a completely different pov than your customers. It's very endearing to know that you really care about what you're doing and what you're putting out there. But at the same time, don't drive yourself crazy with perfectionism. Self doubt can be really stressful, and I'd bet it's contributing to a lot of the burnout you've been experiencing recently.
I mean, I can't speak for everybody, but some of my favorite videos of yours are those that you probably call "low effort". Videos where there's less research and more of your thoughts on a subject. I like just about all your stuff (I'm one of the Stalingrad fans, watched that whole series), and while I appreciate all the effort and research you put it, I primarily tune in to hear your takes on things. I ESPECIALLY appreciate your thorough explanation of Nazi socialism and Gnosticism. It's literally stuff that makes so much sense, but NOBODY else talks about. It's really helped me reach breakthroughs with things I've been thinking about that are seemingly unrelated... but the way you connect and present things is just really comprehensive, and thought provoking.
Anyway, before I start kissing your ass too much, I appreciate you and your work man, and it sucks to see you stressed out and worried. You shouldn't be. You should be proud of the work you do because it's god damn good work!

@@TheImperatorKnight Please forgive me for asking a question that belong more in the private realm.
Who is telling you that your video is bad? I mean, who point out that you did a mistake here, or researched wrong there? How many are there? You have made a few videos where you explain very well how you work and the process (I love them because they show how much work that goes into every video). I haven't seen anyone coming up better ways to do things. So you are pretty much on the top then? Actually your work is pretty revolutionary.
If we look away for those silly haters that cannot point to anything meaningful other than "it is stupid", I cannot see anyone that point out anything bad about your videos - so why tell yourself this?
Your line of thinking is very common, and too few get challenged with these questions in order to try change their way of thinking.
      The risk is burn out.
The thing is - the audience isn't really that demanding. I believe you could literally just have a video and read something profound from one of your books be just as entertaining, or rambling about things you do not have a qlue about. As long as you are honest(which you are) it will be ok. The "monday video" as you call them just need to be "audience level ok", and should be a 1 day production.
UA-cam graphs is not the reality. You produce content that can be re-seen later, it is just a question of how to promote that.
Have your eyes on the target - you can be done with stalingrad by christmas (where have heard that one before?). :)

TIK, this is exactly what many of us wanted for you when you really got burned out earlier this year. "Low effort" videos when needed so that you can put out "high effort" videos when they are ready. I find all of your work to be extremely high effort, but there's certainly a difference between a video that is replying to a comment using your previous knowledge and a video that requires you to read something not only new but incredibly illuminating.
We don't mind you taking an extra week (or two!) to get it right.

Recently, when I was reading Robert Gellatley's book "Backing Hitler", I stumbled across a section regarding the Nazi T4-program. I usually take reading such harrowing events on the chin, but the part in which it was described how doctors would lock mentally disabled children in rooms to starve to death really punched me in the gut, and I had to put the book down in revulsion.
As I did so, my two nieces and one of my nephews (all of whom are toddlers) came running into the room, laughing, playing, and enjoying their lives. Something about the juxtaposition of what I had just read, and the presence of those kids---free and innocent of the evils of the world---really made me see things differently and made me appreciate things so much more, once I put everything into perspective, and not to take ANYTHING for granted. Needless to say, I became the fun uncle since that moment.

Having studied atrocities in WWII and the Soviet Union, I can relate. I’m drawn to learning about them somehow and have developed a degree of tolerance, but there’s one video about Auschwitz which I saved to a playlist and have yet to see again. Normally, a new documentary about WWII, which impresses me, is welcomed, shared and watched again within a month or so. While I do intend on watching a second time? I’m in no rush. The Gulag Archipelago also hit me pretty hard. I listened to the first 20 hours of the audiobook here on UA-cam. For audio only, it was tough and idk if I’ll finish it. The darker side of human capacity is discouraging and heartbreaking.
Beginning with a desire for perhaps understanding how people can treat others in certain ways, I do know it’s important for those of us who are capable of withstanding such material to endure. Occasionally I have to take a few months or a year off from it.
Yeah, I’m strangely draw to it. It helps to remember what many soldiers have surely thought prior to, during and after combat.
“How did it come to this?”
I want to know how it can be averted. For 30 years I’ve been trying to find some answers… in a comfortable and safe setting. Many combatants in history would’ve preferred my experience to their own. It seems like they’ve earned the sacrifice by those of us who are able to manage the material psychologically. I just know that taking occasional breaks from the worst content is healthy. The sacrifice involves more than just time. But it’s damn sure important.

You're already setting a standard on making history videos on this platform (I haven't seen anyone who so clearly and consistently references his sources) and on historical work as a whole. If there's more research to be done than expected - great! That means either A) there will be more history to discover, or B) the topic is more complex and thus a deeper dive is needed to explore it properly. Either way you're doing the good work so don't beat yourself up about that too much.
Personally I'm willing to wait as long as it takes. I'm on my... As from the times of Francis Galton, Eugenics just refers to the promotion of positive heritable characteristics. Eugenics can be promoted in many ways, as it's just promoting positive genes, for example the modern CRISPR program, or the ideas of Social Darwinist thinker - Herbert Spencer. I'm sure your explanation of Eugenics in terms of how the Nazis believed should be implemented will be great, but remember that not all Eugenicists agree that sterilisation or genocide is what will bring humanity forward.

Keep doing what you are doing Tik! This video really reminded me of when I had a debate for the past two years with my now former history teacher about whether the Nazis were socialists or not. Since he described himself as "a communist in private", this didn't quite help the debate. The funniest parts of the debate were when he would tell me of a primary source that he remembered from university that supposedly proved me wrong, then I would look up the primary source, read it, and then find out that the actual primary source that he recommended undermined his entire argument. He once argued that "madman" Hitler had no strategic goals or economic concept and "just wanted to senselessly fight" because of "Darwinian struggle". He then recommended the Hoßbach Protocol as "proof" that the Nazis just wanted to "fight, fight, fight." However, in the protocol, it is almost immediately acknowledged that a "wartime boom cannot be a permanent solution to Germany's economic problems," and then it obviously goes on about the east and so on, but you get the point. After reading many primary source documents directly from the DAF or one of the other books, "Um die Nahrungsfreiheit Europas" (To ensure the food freedom of Europe) by Herbert Backe [Reichsminister for Food and Agriculture], it has almost become unfathomable to think that anybody would try to argue that the Nazis were not socialists.

The movement of socialism as socialists experience it today is somewhat removed from the socialism of the 1930s. Racism could be found extremely widely in any European political movement, it just so happens to have even shown up in the Labour and workers movements, at times, in certain places.
But fundamentally I disagree that Hitler was a Socialist as we nowadays or Marxists back then would think about it. I doubt that hitler really cared at all about “socialism.” He makes only passing mention of it because his party is named as such, rather than socialist ideas being prevalent in his thought and actions.
You had to be a “socialist” party in Germany at that time to succeed. But that doesn’t mean that he was at all socialist in his ideology or intentions. Remember that he didn’t even name the party, he joined Drexler. It was an ethno-nationalist party from the start, while Marx was specifically an internationalist. So if Nazis reject Marxism, maybe they can put the vague “socialist” into their party name, but no other socialist would hear a second of it.
Socialism is an ideology of Liberation. To specifically exclude people based on their race, religion etc, is basically an oppressive action, which means Nazis only care about having “socialism” or, actually using the society/state as a force for the development of that society, in the interests of ethnic Germans.
This is just totalitarian ethnonationalism as it’s own movement in Germany specifically.
It means using the entire force of the arbitrarily defined German Race, for its benefit, with all of the inherent contradictions and predictable consequences that creates.
So Nazism was socialist in the same way that Cocoa Puffs are a nutritious breakfast. Not really, according to nutritious breakfasts.

@@josephk.4200 If excluding a certain group in favor of another group is an oppressive action, then how is the worker taking from the entrepreneur any better than the German taking from the Jew? If you argue that Marxist Socialism is an ideology of liberating the workers from "oppression", and hence can be classed as a form of socialism, then why is the National Socialist, whom argues "oppression" by the Jews not therefore an ideologist of liberation? Is it not, that, what is liberation is quite clearly in the eye of the beholder?

Communists see the capitalist ruling class, the ultra wealthy, as causing great harm. But that doesn’t mean they have to be killed.
Extreme wealth and power after all, is not a immutable characteristic. They can be taken away from these people and they will probably be better off for it.
The problem is not that we need to eat the rich, but rather that many of them would rather die than live without their power. It is notable that many powerful individuals are sociopaths, and actively pursue the accumulation of personal power and wealth. In fact, it is notable that our capitalist society tells people that’s exactly what they should do.

@@josephk.4200Marx is not the inventor of socialism. There were thinkers before him, during and after who had different interpretations. Fabian socialism desired an egalitarian system through eugenics. It's quite different but it was still socialism. In fact all socialisms were looking for the same thing, only the way to achieve it was different. Nazism and Fascism were non-Marxist socialism. No need to put blinders on unless you are in denial...

You are correct, there are non Marxian species of socialism, but socialism is an extremely broad historical term in that sense.
Most modern “socialist” thinkers are self proclaimed Marxists, meaning they adhere to international democratic socialism.
Meaning, working class people everywhere need to do everything possible to take the helm of society away from rulers and institutions that have lost their legitimacy by treating their own citizens like livestock.
Conservatism could be called socialism for the rich. Doesn’t really align it with the ideas of most people that call themselves socialists. Nazis can call themselves socialist, but at the end of the day, it’s not an ideology of liberation, but an ideology that chains an entire society to one powerful man’s ambitions. It’s not democratic, therefore it is not socialist according to most socialists.

Yeah the problem with eugenics isn't that the idea behind it is wrong but that we STILL are not at the necessary level of understanding to make it work 100% and by the time we get to that point we would not even need it as a process as we'd have other methods to achieve the same end goal. There's also the lack of differentiation between positive and negative eugenics which leads to confusion.

Here's my opinion. Stating the H man was a leftist in school can get you into some trouble as its quite politically incorrect. While that's a shame, unless you have cool teachers who like to debate and teach rather than dictate a curriculum, you should keep your head down and keep your mind sceptical.
When I was in school I was actually quite right wing and had some views I think are shameful now, but I'm glad I kept those views to myself given the ramifications that holding politically incorrect views has. I had a few teachers who just enjoyed talking to me and debating and I'd speak to them and they genuinely challenged me and my mind was eventually changed on things. And I think that really shows why teachers just dictating a curriculum is so bad, and why teachers doing the opposite is such a good thing. It's even worse though, in this case when this girl is absolutely correct in what she's saying.
