This video is excellent! Thank you for creating and sharing. I was quoted £1000 by BMW (with 'discounted labour rates') to fix the issue, and after watching this I spent about 3-4 hours very gently walking through it, and my car is now fixed (and cleaner since I spent some of that time hoovering it out in the process). The spring cost about 50p. The only difficulty I had was making sure the electrical plugs (particularly the one that clips back to the top of the gearstick unit for the gearstick lights) were accessible to put back - that gearstick light plug had ended up hidden so had to back-step a little to untrap it and route it back up to the correct position.
Yup, you are a great mechanic, and one of the best UA-cam repair video producers. So much great detail but still in a concise, quick to watch video. I subscribed just because you've been a great help, but I'm only fixing a friend's BMW, so unfortunately I don't typically need BMW focused videos. Thanks!
First, thank you for your video and i wish i had you as my neighbor. We have a 2017 x1, same problem is exactly what we have, first they said $3600 to fix it, then little by little as a good will gesture, came down to $1000. After we came back home, my wife showed your video and I'm kicking myself in the ...... for a 15 cents spring and half day job I'm paying $1000.
Great video and very well explained fix of this annoying problem in our F46 220d grand tourer (7.5 yrs / 174.000km). We have the plug-in connecter for mobile phones in the arm rest, which comes with three more connectors to be carefully removed. The repair took me about three hours, with a couple of interruptions to study the respective sequences of the video. It‘s fun 😅
I finally fixed it today. The gear did not work during the first installation. I removed the gear again. I finally made it.. thank you very much for everything.
@ “On the second attempt, I disassembled the gear block again according to the video and installed the spring. Then I properly attached the cable leading to the transmission to the gear block, and it worked.”
Great video, very detailed, much appreciated, Got quoted $A2,700 by BMW in Victoria Australia and thought I would do it myself. Took around 6 hours as I wanted to go very slowly and its quite easy to break some the plastic tabs etc. Also wanted to document the wires and where they went so it would all work properly when done. All sorted, thanks again. You're a legend.
BMW quoted over £1000, local BMW Specialist quoted £850, local garage did the job for 3 hours labour using this video. Thanks so much for doing this video.
Thanks a lot for this! Mine broke around 140k kms. It took me net around 6 hours, doing everything slowly. Hardest part was getting the plastic pin out from gear selector. I must say it looks like a design failure. The spring wire under normal use is practically pushed against a plastic wedge, no wonder it breaks after a while. The spring broke exactly at the touch point where the edge is. In any case, great tutorial!

Thank you for making this video, it gave me the confidence to make this repair. Garages only want to replace the whole selector mechanism, which costs a lot of money in parts alone. I found replacement springs on ebay for a few pounds. Following the video was easy and I completed the job in half a day.👌
You help me a lot. I replaced my fauty ring on my f48 automatic by my self. It took me a time, but problem fixed and everything working fine. All the best and many thanx for yours videos. 👍
Amazing video. Just followed this video to fix my 2016 220d Gran Tourer. Had the same fault message on dash and got the spring from Alibaba or Wish (can't remember which) for £3.50ish. They actually sent two for the price. Took me about 2.5 hours all in as wanted to be gentle and not break anything. Only issues I had was gear knob wouldn't pull off so left it on and carried on and I couldn't find the pin needed to push out to disconnect the gear cable at first- if this happens to you change the position of the gear selector until it lines up with the hole.
Sensational video - BMW Australia have quoted me $1,600 (EUR 1,000) for the gear lever assembly, then you'd need to add a labour cost! I'll try fixing it your way in a couple of weeks. Thanks!

Just finished repairing my 220i GranTourer. I replaced the broken spring by a new one. They can be ordered cheaply at ebay. But you should be aware that the new spring will break again if you don't modifiy the white part and the black housing. The real problem causing the spring leg to break is the fact that after about half of the whole travel, the spring leg collides with the edge of the white part, which will stop the spring to twist any further and only bends the leg as it moves further. You can easily feel this by moving the white part by hand: the spring force will greatly increase when this happens. I used my Dremel tool to remove part of the edge inside the white part and also removed most of the part of the black housing on which the spring leg rests. Now the spring is able to move the full travel without the leg being bent.

My wife’s 2016 Mini Cooper clubman s had the same message. Dug in and removed shifter and had the same problem. Shifter was exactly the same. Not able to use same spring so need to order a new one or try and find one. Ordered on eBay but first one was too small….need to find a larger diameter hole…..hope I can put it all back together. Good to make pictures of the wires and how they were connected. I have a 225XE Hybrid and couldn't disconnect the battery, but all went fine.
Great video...ive just replaced my broken spring and fault has gone The only problem I have is the illumination on top of the gear shift lever has stopped working?
Followed this video today for our 2016 F46 and worked brilliantly. BMW should be ashamed of themselves relying on such a flimsy spring, it’s more akin to a hair spring out of a clock.
Hello . I'm glad that you managed to repair your car yourself, if you want to give something back give a like subscribe and share, it will help me a lot
Either the spring material is too weak or the black plastic channel the spring's end sits in is too sharp/rough against the spring's soft material. Regardless, I did learn something, and I definitely won't just bend that weak metal and rest it back into that plastic channel as it is, because obviously, it's only a matter of time before it snaps again. What is the spring material, brass? I think I'll make my own spring out of something better if brass isn't already as good as it gets. Maybe I'll file down that plastic channel too, so that it won't eventually cut into the metal. Maybe I'll wrap the spring's end in some sort of tape to give it a longer, more protected chance of survival in there.
Hello, thank you very much for your help. I managed to solve the problem regarding the video. But once i put everything in place now when i move the shift the green light doesn't work and when i switch to manual it doesn't work neither. Can you please help? What did i do wrong?? Thankfully

Great tutorial, cleaning and greasing everything. I wish you were close to take my car for this and any other fix.
You can do it!
Great explanation was very detailed and I was able to follow and fix the problem thank you so much for putting the video up 👍
Bro, u do great work, keep it up! World needs U, thank you!
Thank you for sharing your tips. I repaired my car thanks to this video.
Great to hear!
Followed this video today for our 2016 F46 and worked brilliantly. BMW should be ashamed of themselves relying on such a flimsy spring, it’s more akin to a hair spring out of a clock.
Hello . I'm glad that you managed to repair your car yourself, if you want to give something back give a like subscribe and share, it will help me a lot
hi, Lewis did you disconnect the battery for that? I have an F45 as well hybrid but not sure how to disconnect the battery is all covered in plastics
Hi Fantastic video and brilliant motor car engineering, not something I could attempt if i have the same issue with my F46. Regards
Absolutely perfect! Clear, direct, problem solved! Thank you!!
Great to hear!
Great video, all that work for little spring. What is the grease and the spray you are using?
It's normal Vaseline, and the spray is a contact spay
Awesome write up. My car just reported the same error. Have to decide if I’m going to have a go or find someone reasonable.
Great. Unfortunately i cannot fix it and my garage does not want to replace the spring
Thanks, I don't have this problem (yet), but I do need to remove the centre console.
Thank you! Very good video, I believe I can change myself based on your guidance.
Hello, thank you very much for your help. I managed to solve the problem regarding the video.
But once i put everything in place now when i move the shift the green light doesn't work and when i switch to manual it doesn't work neither.
Can you please help?
What did i do wrong??
Thankfully
Very complicated process, but you are a genius
😇
Thank you! Cheers!
Grazieeee, ho seguito alla lettera il tuo video, è stato molto utile e ho risolto il problema in mezza giornata, A thousand thanks.🎉
Great video, I hope I can make it.
The error deletes itself automatically?
Driving a 225 xe do I need to take precautions before I start taking everything out
Cuánto tiempo tardaste en hacer todo el proceso ? Gracias
Very good brother.
Happy birthday !!!
excellent video.
Thank you very much!
Where can I get the spring? Thank you. A small thank I have subscribed.
So how to you set the pin from underneath? Do you have to push the it some way to lock it into the round metal gear cable?
Excellent videos thank you ….. but if change the mechanism with the second generation is possible and the problem expire ?
I had the same problem on my 218d Active Tourer yesterday (manual gearbox) - I released the handbrake but it was locked on and I got a warning message. Fortunately, I I had my Veepeak OBD11 connector in the car (specifically for BMWs). I connected it to the bimmertool app on my phone and managed to release it via the service functions.
Thanks!
I have a hybride f45. I have just to remove the 12v before the operation ? Or they have another procédure?
Did you disconnect the battery?
Ovi the best. Gracias. I managed to repair the spring. Could you please advise some cool upgrades for the F46 model ?
There are no things as: best upgrades! There is nothing best for these cars than the factory!
Hello thank you for an amazing video. I’ve replaced the broken spring but still get the error.
Any ideas on why this would happen ? Thank you
Hello, you like most people did it wrong! First, start with diagnosing the vehicle and, after that, start to dismantle , now you need to do a diagnosis and see what is going on!
i have F10 and I have 02 or 03 pbs in it ; one regarding Trunk, all times it give me indication that the trunk is open and the interne light is on , the second problem is about parc assistance, my F10 has a rack ( crémaillere) in the rear , and infortunetly, this option does not work , i think either autmatique parc also , what can you Ovidu recommande me to do for this pbs , let me humbly remind you that i m a manual , many thanks
I would really like to thank you. I have just made it on my F46. Tnx!
Thanks!
Welcome!
Fab video, all for a tiny spring looks like a BMW latent defect
Thank you for your Excellent video , my car has same problem, car BMW 220D luxury auto do you have any part number for that spring? Thanks
What is the white gel that you put on the plastic when closing it ? And is it important to do ?
Esti minunat omule, multumiri!!!
why would a car preaching quality continue to put a tiny spring in that location that breaks, use a better spring, omg.... Long as the car drives I would completely ignore it. Excellent video, I watched yours on the X1 same problem.
Thanks a lot for this awesome video and your detail explanation is excellent.
Further I am owning 2016 218i petrol active tourer and I have the same issues.
By looking into the manhour effort it might be an expensive repair, hence shall I continue to drive with this warning until my next major service approx at 10 months or do I need attend this issue immediately.
Please advise as I am not an expert in automobile.
Hello, you can drive it like this if the permanent warning message won't disturb you
First of all great Video! i have the same error on my f10 m5…. could this be the same issue?
Hello, We had the same problem and we have just repaired it thanks ot you but now we are getting an error that says “sos call system failure” do you know what could be the reason?
