Khabib's striking wasn't that great but its better than a lot of people believe, the guy moves around so quick and his footwork here was definitely better than most fighters of this time, which is why his takedowns worked so well because he wasn't a stocky wrestler, he was pretty agile, his defense was also high level, look at the head movement in this fight and how many right hands he blocked/parried with his arm/shoulder
I think Khabib's striking actually is quite effective and brilliant. He literally outstruck Gaethje, knocked down Conor and showed a good striking defense against Dustin.
Khabib is such an amazing champion. You see him take 2 rounds undisputed, and then he fights round 3 in Al's territory to give him a chance. He has complete control of the fight and yet he has the respect and kindness to be fair to his opponent. That is just greatness. You'll always be the greatest most humble champion in the arena Khabib ! much love.
Very interesting fact of this fight: Khabib was watching loads of videos of Muhammad Ali boxing while training and cutting weight for this fight that he even admitted that he went too overboard with his striking because he was so motivated from the videos. You may also notice that mid fight his brother Abubaker Nurmagomedov started getting angry with him and told him to stop messing around (With the striking stuff). But Iaquinta would credit his striking as really weird that it was hard to counter but also give credit to Iaquinta for his wrestling defence in this fight.
27:17 I’m very surprised at Joe Rogan’s bad commentary in this fight as long as he’s been doing this. Bad night for Joe. Khabib was in control of the whole fight and knew he could rely on his superior wrestling at any point in time he felt in trouble. As I said before khabib stand up isn’t the best but can get the job done however both men would destroy Joe Rogan in the octagon with Khabib’s opponent was no walk in the park. Khabib’s opponent was well prepared for this fight. Good controlled fight and experience for Khabib.

Khabib was always steps ahead. The way he could sense when you were taking a break and just start pummeling you , to the second you were about to make a move and just shift his weight and position and keep you down. There’s been so many interviews with people who grappled with Khabib from training partners to former opponents who would detail how Khabib had amazing hip movement and positioning control with his lower body as much as his upper body.
Khabib stand up is excellent, technique wise and defensively it’s top notch. He understands angles very well and doesn’t get hit with big shots. The single leg/leg trip takedown is phenomenal. Once he gets opponent’s foot or feet off ground it’s a guarantee takedown cuz he so adept at leg trips. Also excellent against cage, gets the back and then overpowers opponents side plane by riding his weight like an anchor breaking base preventing them from building a foundation for a reversal of position. Took foot off gas a bit but still got the better of stand up in 3rd and 4th rounds. First time going 5 so not a bad strategy at all especially when u consider al was not really a threat despite what Rogan was saying. Showed a good jab in 3rd busting up al’s nose. Also super smart switching to southpaw in 3rd targeting lower leg with kicks from a different angle. A human tornado 🌪️
yeah it's not 'top notch' by any definition. Khabib had so much success boxing his opponents because A - he had excellent footwork and B - they had to posture wide with a low guard because he was so terrifying on the ground and so good at taking you down given the slightest opening. This fight is a great example - Al was boxing nearly bent over, trying to keep a decent mid guard to protect his face while also keeping his hips low and elbows down to defend takedowns. This made Khabib the more agile fighter by far, let him see all of Al's punches coming, and let him get away with keeping his hands low which made his very snappy flicking jab highly effective. What is now a textbook case of elite wrestling opening the door for aggression and success on the feet. Opponents had no choice but to posture to defend takedowns, credit to Khabib and his team to take advantage. Also shows why Khabib always said Islam was even better than he was - Khabib is the better wrestler I think but Islam is a much better striker, while still being an elite grappler.@@iDanksgiving
If you want to know how good Khabib was, realize that this was one of the most dominant title fights in history, likely 50-43, and people like Rogan seems to think that Khabib’s aura of invincibility was cracking after this fight. He was dominant, completely apart from any fighter ever.

@@TVAnthologyReviews his strikes are practical not pretty nor boxing. they are sambo techniques great for hitting someone and then going for the take down with one fluid motion.
i mean it definitely gets the job done but it’s not necessarily “impressive” for a ufc fighter. the threat of his takedown and wrestling is so strong that it allows him to perform well on the feet because his opponent is always scared of Khabib shooting. Obviously that’s all apart of the game but my point is that if there was no threat of getting taken down 90% of ufc fighters are gonna smoke him in the stand up.

Every single thing he does is so efficient. Play this at .25 speed and you will see how Khabib uses basic physics concepts instinctively. When he's on top of them? That's his body weight, his strength and gravity that the person pinned down has to fight against. And when the fighter tries to get up, he wastes a lot of energy. And on top of that, khabib can just use all that energy the opponent is spending to also get up himself (riding the opponents back) Guy is a genius

A human tornado 🌪️
joe is literally calling him "amateurish" in the 4th and 5th round his striking is so bad lol he keeps his chin way too high...
23:18 lol
yeah it's not 'top notch' by any definition.
Also shows why Khabib always said Islam was even better than he was - Khabib is the better wrestler I think but Islam is a much better striker, while still being an elite grappler.@@iDanksgiving

i mean it definitely gets the job done but it’s not necessarily “impressive” for a ufc fighter. the threat of his takedown and wrestling is so strong that it allows him to perform well on the feet because his opponent is always scared of Khabib shooting.
