  • This is an updated version of my note-taking video from 2020 ( • HOW TO TAKE NOTES from... ) - it has more tips, includes mentions of digital note-taking as well as covers my all-time favourites methods of taking notes from books I read.
How to take notes from a book you read? How to remember everything that you read? Make sure that what you read, you also remember. Taking notes while reading a book is a skill, almost an art in itself.
In today's video, I am going to show techniques used by Cal Newport, Ryan Holiday and Maria Popova to retain information from the books you read.
I cover the following note-taking methods:
    The Morse Code Method
    The Index of Key Ideas
    Digital note-taking
    The Highfive Notebook Method
    The Commonplace Book
    and much more.

The Commonplace book idea sounds like the Zettelkasten method to me :)

This was a great overview that inspired me to change my currently messy note taking habits -- specifically how I make the ideas more permanent. One suggestion I have -- the Commonplace Book method is more complex than the other ideas and could benefit more from demonstrative visuals to accompany your verbal descriptions -- that's the part where I needed to take the most notes! But loved this for introducing the concepts.

Lots of great ideas here! I especially think the morse code method could be helpful to me personally. That's an easy and quick way to put a pin in things without losing your concentration or accidentally getting yourself out of the narrative dream.

Thank you for the overview. I have been using highlighters and sometimes writing summaries, but good to consider some other options.

I keep a large note card in all my books and I keep my note cards in a index box. Latter on, I add the most important notes in my bullet journal.
