66. Practice Routine - Test your cueing

  • Barry demonstrates a routine that even the professionals find tough. It severely tests your cueing technique as potting the balls gets progressively more difficult. It is a routine to help your cueing technique and cue ball control. And remember, you should not get frustrated about not being able to complete it.

    Good practice exercise and I enjoyed this learning. Again, similar to a recent video I watched of Barry's I realized in terms of placing cue on ball, the shots are just simple stun or screw shots which by nature on throughout the exercise, you are able to be on the blue or a red. No side or anything like that needed.

    Hey Barry, been a big fan of your videos since I discovered them and I've found your advice to be some of the best I've found. Last year I made the transition from pool to snooker and it's not been an easy one. I just wanted to ask if you have any advice on how to maintain good focus or if you have any advice on how to get into the habit of always doing a pre-shot routine? I tend to rush a lot of shots- especially when playing against others. I also find that I lose a lot of accuracy for shots requiring more power and I was wondering if you know of a way I can help make those shots more accurate or even a routine that could help develop them?
    Once again though, thanks for the videos as they've been a great help and I do feel that following your advice is helping me improve my game

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  7 років тому

      John. Making the transition from pool to snooker can be difficult because snooker is more demanding on the accuracy of your cue action. The discipline of acquiring a sound pre-shot routine is also very demanding but must be done if you are to make progress, this will then assist you to maintain your focus throughout. Power always tends to create errors so use it sparingly but once you have developed your pre-shot routine this will help. I'm afraid there are no easy answers, just hard work, but when you miss don't just accept it, keep asking questions of yourself

    i recently had to move my cue under my right eye since its my dominant eye, and the reason for doing this is becaz when i was lining up it was perfect but when i was in address position i was offline. after trying for months i figured out that i lineup with my right eye and when im down my left eye sees the potting angle.
    however i have a question ? my cuing has changed aswell, i cannot cue very straight as i used to when it was in the middle of my chin ! , will cuing be changed if we move the cue to the right of the chin?
    plus i want to know if i have done the right thing by moving the cue to the right side of my chin, now when im down, im no more offline, however this feels so uncomfortable and strange
    please correct me barry!
    thank you

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  7 років тому +3

      Artgamer. It is important to favour the dominant eye but in this case it sounds as if you have over done it. Any change takes a while to get used to but it must be the right change. Cueing in a straight line is important but it must be the correct straight line. You say your alignment is correct and if this is so then you must practise to ensure the cueing is on this line. But you also say that when you where in the middle of your chin, your cueing was straight, this is usually indicative of favouring the dominant eye too much.

    • @theznooker
      @theznooker 7 років тому +1

      thank you for your kind reply. after practicing for few days i can cue much straighter with cue under my right eye, however i am not so sure if i should stick with this for longer period.
      the reason that i had to move the cue under my right eye is that when i lineup i am always online but when in address position, 80% of the times i am offline. so i knew there must be something wrong with my sighting. when i am down in address position with the cue under mid chin, then if i close my left eye i go offline only 10% , but if i close my right eye i go like 50% offline.
      i did the test to point an object and it shows that i am right eyed ( right stephen hendry , right handed and right eyed )
      i worked on my line of aim for about 1 year now and nothing improved. so i had to work this time with dominant eye etc, yet i am not sure if i have to move the cue under my right eye or left eye
      all i know is that when i move my cue under my right eye, i am not as much as offline as i used to be when cuing under middle chin
      thank you barry once again, i know its abit long but you are the perfect person to ask a complex question as this one

    Wonderful as usual. Do you shoot left at all?

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  7 років тому +9

      Randy. I encourage all players to practise with their opposite hand a little, not only because it is a useful skill to have but also to counteract the asymmetrical strain placed upon the body by adopting the playing position over many years with countless repetitions. Unfortunately, no one was around to give me that advice when I was a youngster so I find playing left handed rather difficult.

    • @topneorej
      @topneorej 7 років тому

      +Barry It's true, I think youngsters today all practice both sides, and the next generation we will seldom see the rest being used;-)
      B.t.w. it's als good to teach a tennis player to use both hands and see which works better (think of Nadal).
      And I wonder if they (will) do the same in golf. I know a guy that sacrifices a club to carry a left 7 iron when hindered by trees, or stands.

      malcolm. Certainly on occasions I have done it but it gets harder as I get older. I am 75 years of age now, my eyesight and coordination are not what they were, my cue action has a slight age related tremor so any ambitions I have in the game revolve around coaching and not playing.

  • @gmonkey808
    @gmonkey808 7 років тому

    Barry love your videos! On another channel a guy was saying that the speed of shot affects potting angle. So lets say you have a three quarter ball blue into the centre you would need to adjust slightly for a power shot versus a slow follow shot. Is this true??

    • @TheRattapeng
      @TheRattapeng 7 років тому

      the harder the shot, the less it "throws"- the softer the shot, the more it throws.
      Sorry Barry for jumpin in :)

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  7 років тому

      gmonkey. Certainly if you hit the ball harder you will need to be more accurate, but power creates errors rather than accuracy. So I believe this is where this comes from. I don't believe it is true though.

      Kristal. We tend to lose flexibility and coordination as we get older. Be honest with yourself and ask the questions. Can I get in the correct position with comfort? Am I a little stiff around the shoulders and neck? Do I need to pay a little more attention to my pre-shot routine? I try to stretch every day and I would encourage you to it may help. Good luck.

  • @teamilk

    what a difficult routine. i'll try this routine on my next practice.
    what happens if i miss on my 3rd, 4th or 5th red/blue? should i restart the whole routine or do i assume that the ball is potted and continue?

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому

      teamilk. Its a good idea to do both. By that I mean try starting again one day and on another day try setting a target of allowing yourself so many misses. By setting yourself targets you can monitor your improvement.

    Barry, have you ever played against Ronnie ?
    And if so, how do you assess his cueing technique ?

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  4 роки тому +1

      Michael. I was fortunate to play a few friendly games with Ronnie, to be honest I got very proficient at taking little balls out of pockets, he was awesome. Nobody hits the ball quite like Ronnie, he has this unique ability to make it look effortless and his timing is perfect which comes from his grip and how he varies the grip pressure on different shots invariably allowing him to deliver the cue at the same speed regardless of the shot. Brilliant.

  • @141matty
    @141matty 7 років тому

    Barry, this might seem like a daft question.. but what do you look at when taking a pot on? Do you look at the cue ball, object ball or the pocket?

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  7 років тому

      141matty. It certainly is not a daft question, A lot of players get confused with this. While you are doing your pre-shot routine you should be flitting your eyes to and from the cue ball and object ball. But, quite definitely, when you finally deliver the cue to play the shot you should be looking at the object ball.

    Hi there. Nice video on cueing .Is a newer player better to use a heavier 20oz cue then move to a lighter one later?
    Thanks

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  7 років тому +2

      brian. Oh! no. 20oz is very heavy for a snooker cue, I certainly would not go much above 18oz. If you want to reach a good standard you need to feel the shot, I don't believe you can do that with a heavy cue. My cue is about 18oz but Ding picked it up one day and said it was very heavy. Jack. Some coaches advocate working on a system of three. By that I mean use the length of the back swing to determine the power you put in the shot. Gentle shot- short swing. Medium pace shot-medium length back swing. Power shot- long back swing. Whilst this does make sense and some players do use it I prefer a beginner to work with the longer swing allowing cue tip speed to determine the power. This develops a sound cue action and a better sense of feel which ultimately can be shortened as the players skill develops.

    Sir.... i have problem sliding my stick back a d forth on my chin and bridge because of friction... should i use talc powder or something?

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому +2

      Sera. This sounds as if you have varnish on your cue, I hate the stuff. If you use talcum powder it is likely to leave a deposit on the table and your opponent may object. If there is varnish on the shaft of the cue I would very carefully have it removed but if that is not acceptable to you there are cueing gloves available and some players do use them. They are available on the internet at a very reasonable price.

      Awes. In all my videos I have tried to encourage players to relax to gain the correct feelings, a video cannot show a feeling you must experience this yourself to appreciate this.

    sir I recenty notice one thing in if I play cue ball I get through the ball easily but that same thing i do when i hit the object ball somewhere I feel I don't able to go through please explain .

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  7 років тому +1

      Shashank. This is because you are letting the the act of aiming and hitting the object ball distract you from getting through the ball. I believe you are paying attention to trying to pot the object ball and forgetting the very principle that allows you to do this in the first place, that is getting through the ball. Don't allow this to happen, check your follow through in your solo practise, getting through the ball is essential and the more you do it in practise the more you will do it matches.

    Not that you need any more praise, but well played Barry! I was saying to myself "Bloody hell, he's not going to get them all is he?!". Unfortunately this practice routine is probably a little too advanced for me at this stage since I'm yet to make my first 30 break. I think I'll go back and re-watch some of your beginner videos instead :)

    • @christiano8088
      @christiano8088 Рік тому

      I wouldn't worry dude, professionals would struggle to complete this routine. You should be on 3 reds either side of the blue, if you can pot 6 reds and 6 blues, into the centre pocket you'll be doing well. Baby steps. This routine you're watching is for the super elite.

    Dear Barry, I would like to know if my elbow cannot raise over 90 degree (i mean my shoulder cannot be raised above horizontally from the ground level, when i am standing straight in order to do this). Does that mean i may not have enough strength or cue power in order to perform a long distance screw back... at least screw back 1/3 of table if potting in long distance)

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  7 років тому

      thomas. Screwing the ball back has little to do with strength but everything to do with cue power. Cue power is the ability to hit and get through the ball maintaining contact with cue ball and cue tip. The incomparable Joe Davis put it very well when he said, " Get through it and hang on to it," When you hit that cue ball correctly you will know because you will feel it. Keep trying.

      Thx for your advice Barry; however, i would like to ask if i feel comfortable to have my left leg as the support leg instead of the right and place my bridge hand a bit closer to the cue ball for a middle to long range pot with my best cue power, what 's your opinion about this?

    Hello i have a problem.... If i hit down the cue ball it doesnt go backwards but i misscue... Can you help me pls

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  7 років тому +1

      EL. There are many problems that cause beginners to mis-cue when they try to screw the cue ball back. Don't grip the cue too tight. Don't hit the ball too hard, feel the cue ball. Keep the cue parallel with the table as much as possible while you get through the ball. Chalk your cue and relax. Start with the balls fairly close together and don't be too ambitious early on.

    Hi barry, i want to become a professional snooker player, and i love snooker so much i know i can do it, but i get alot of people putting me off, and when i practise i pot good but durig the match i can hardly pot

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  7 років тому

      greayal. Taking your practise form to the match table is a problem for a lot of good players. The answer is to develop a sound pre-shot routine that can be relied upon under pressure. Take a look at how Mark Selby and John Higgins play the game, they have the same preparation for every shot, easy or difficult. That is the importance of a pre-shot routine.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach

      Derpy. Don't see why not, the reduction in distances should help with the potting but the smaller balls may make control a little tricky. Good luck.

    hello sir, I have two questions.
    1) whats meant by points without reply?
    2) why does a player asks the opponent to play the shot again when the opponent gets a snooker?
    thank you.
    -charan

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  7 років тому +2

      Sri. Points without reply simply means the amount of points scored by a player while his opponent is still on zero, or in other words has not potted a ball. If a player snookers his opponent and the opponent fails to get out of it, the player who lays the snooker will assess the situation. If he feels there is no advantage to be gained by playing the shot himself he can ask the opponent to play again. If a miss is called the balls will be replaced to their original position before the opponent is asked to play again.

    This is extremely difficult, anyone who csn do this could compete professionally. To be so strong with a rock solid cue action must mean he has serious issues in other areas if the game. I know he's a very good coach tho but it takes more than a good cue action to win frames.
