John, you are so genuine and I really appreciate what you do and stand for. Your videos are awesome!!! Keep up the good work and thank you for all you do!
John. This was outstanding. !! What is your option on taking this to APPPA and have a APPPA member egg carton maid just for members? If we all used it wouldn't it help spread the word and get more people intrested?
Really great job John! Thanks for the work you do. A genuine piece providing real marketing reverse-engineering with real, irrefutable evidence about the claims. Keep it up!
John, thanks for shedding some light on this company!!! Before we started raising our own hens, we used to buy these. I still think healthier than conventional but Not exactly "Pasture Raised". It was Awesome to finally meet you at the APPPA conference!
It was great meeting you too Dennis! That conference is the best. I would say they they are still a good company and they’re decent eggs, they’re just greenwashing which is no good. It’s a bummer.
This reminds me of the scam that is going on at many of the largest farmer's markets. When people hear farmer's market, they assume that the people running the stands are actually the farmers. But most of the largest farmer's markets no longer require that you grow the stuff you are selling, so they are basically now a supermarket, with a misleading title. The problem in the USA is that very few 'terms' are actually defined by the government, so because ' Pasteur-raised' is not a USDA term, there is no false advertising that can be claimed.
In Canada same issues. We had a large farmers market in Peterborough that had most resellers on their board, when actual farmers complained or posted farmer grower they were kicked out of the farmers market giving more room to resellers. The fight ended up with two different farmers markets, made the news and the old one started offering events to attract more people to the one with more resellers. One of the resellers were followed, from the city were they buy from growers on those bringing in food from otehr provinces and from the USA, then they took it to the farmers market where they were seen taking of the stickers to mislead people into thinking they were a grower not a reseller. People need to ask the right questions or they can claim if you did not ask i did not lie. Coles MOM
Mat Prather yeah it’s super cool. I’d just like to know more about it. Then I can finally focus on the content and not trying to figure out the wall haha
great packaging, here in Australia they are trying to standardize the industry. the featured farm here would fall into the free-range category where if they were moved in a trailer-type shelter they are called organic, great insight into what you guys are doing on the other side of the pond.
Great info. We need better labeling. We should we use words like “soil building” and “rotation/pasture raised eggs”? Its great that you’re providing us information on how some farmers burn out their soil, creating soil erosion and how it relates to dead zones in our lakes and oceans.
Hello John my name is Chris and I owned Chris and Victoria tiny Ranch in Southwest Florida. I do understand your way of raising pasture-raised chickens but I also raise pasture-raised chicken similar to the way they do on a large scale. We have over 1,300 bairds and growing and I also have a Barn with a very huge chicken run which is similar to the fenced-in dust area that you mentioned. Now I can let all those 1314 hundred birds out with a fishing net and they can graze on 8 Acres of pasture land that never get Dusty and never have to worry about rotating. Wafter about five to six hours I take my fishing net and I make them all run back inside their fenced-in Chicken Run. It is actually the best way to do it for security reasons and on a large scale. Everybody do not like the pulll mobile Pastor set up. Because like you said the chickens need dust and they need dust baths for mites and for good self esteem. So I have also research Vital and I own my own birds but I like the farmers way of doing it. That is the way to do it. Vital got away from pull the pasture-raised chickens a long time ago back in 2008. A guy in Arkansas showed him how to do it the right way. Now they sell over 140 million dollars worth of eggs year. Just my two cents. He told them don't rotate the barn rotate the chicken! And that's the way I do it and I can do this on a scale to 5000 to 10,000 bird. And my chickens is get 5 to 6 hours every day on good green pastures. From 6 a.m. until 1 pm. And then collect eggs around 4 to 5. And put them all inside around 5.
I'm in East Texas, just North of Houston and they've been here for a few years. Kroger just released there own line of simple truth "pasture" raised eggs too.
They started in Austin Texas, but now source eggs from many different farmers across the south. Also I think they fill a niche for the consumers that want the warm fuzzy feeling of buying pasture raised eggs but don’t want to spend the time to go to the farmers market. So this way they can do all their shopping at their local store and get the supposedly pasture raised eggs. The farmers markets are great however I think the majority of people do not find that model convenient for the life style. Plus you throw in CSAs where you are stuck getting whatever they have that week. I know it costs the small farmer more. However at some point I think they have to start looking more at making their products more convenient for consumers. For instance delivery service. I think if a vegetable farmer could partner with a grass feed meat provider and a meat chicken provider and an egg producer and perhaps a cheese maker. You could make weekly deliveries and really capture more business. People love to brag about their personal trainer. I think they would love to brag about their personal farmer, meat provider etc. it just adds more value where you can command higher prices. Heck even the local grocery stores charge an additional cost for cub side or delivery services.
I bought a couple of cartons before BUT I could not tell the difference between them and the "regular" eggs, so I went back to the store brand ($6 vs $0.88)
Thank you for your insights!!!!! I want marketing that is creative, but consistent with my mission. Thank you for showing how we could accidentally adopt some of the conventional techniques and misinform our customer. Yes you didn’t say that directly, but that’s one of the things I learned. By the way “flipping the bird” is an old phrase for using your middle finger, giving the bird, or many other similar phrases. Not a nice joke but probably considered adult humor. While some jokes may be comical, they may not build your brand well and may give a different feel than intended…each item must be considered carefully and not whimsically
I mean we have coyotes, snakes, and owls, you kind of have to bring the chickens inside during the evening or they get eaten. texas ain't playing around.
I live by a few “Vital Farmers”. I’m not much of a poultry guy but I’d rather eat eggs from their farm than generic. Not many egg farms left in my area besides them.
Farmers’ markets are not the only option for real eggs. Unfortunately there won’t be the “best” option in every area. Some stores will carry real pasture raised eggs if they’re available in the area, but they’re not available everywhere. Maybe there’s a market opportunity for you! It takes some time and research, and a little luck. But either you’ll find someone or you’ll start raising your own.
It's important to whistleblow. Doesn't matter the persons intentions; people get lazy and greedy. Some need a slap to stay on track, or to change their advertisement. Q to everyone: what would you call a stationary coop for birds to go in at night, and in the day they have their food and water outside in rotating fields, around the coop? Applicable terms so you don't get "slapped".
Free range, extensive free range, organic free range, = stationary barn and varying minimum measurements of space to roam. Doesn’t matter though, they barely move more than five metres away from the barn. Which means you can use the allotted space for loads of other things, which in our case was a wildlife park, as one of the other permitted uses for the range is for other livestock.
I hear ya there. I am towing a line with being honest to myself and at times being a little polished. I’m pretty proud of how this video came out. Unfortunately and fortunately I have a lot going on in my life and I cannot always shoot content out in the field. This is my compromise for wanting to produce good content but not always being able to shoot out in the field.
Holy cow! I've been buying these eggs for over a year now and never really noticed the details. Their marketing is truly excellent to a point of brainwashing! We don't have a egg seller at any of our farmers markets in our area, so I thought these were the best option in the store. We've tried other eggs, organic, "local" pasture raised, i can get eggs from CSA "locally" (30 min drive on the interstate) that is not worth since she is very small producer with lots of customers and has a limit of 2 dozen per customer. Vital farms eggs are better looking (dark yellw to orange yolk) good hard shell, fresh (the white stays together with the yolk) then every other we tried. Should I feel fooled?? "Thanks" for ruining it for me John!!! I so wish that I can just raise my own chickens! It is sad that customers are being bamboozled, fooled and taken advantage of on daily basis! !!!
It’s good to see you back on here as well. I have to know, are you raising chickens in Croatia? If so, can you email me pictures to hello@farmmarketingsolutions.com?
@@farmmarketing When we got our first chickens, we weren’t thinking about design or management. We just wanted to see chickens scratching in our backyard and collect fresh eggs for breakfast. A few years later, and after a few other chicken-keeping scenarios, we decided that mobile chicken pens would be the way to go.
Anyone from Canada here selling pasture eggs? Looking to be a NIGHTMARE here with the bureaucracy, we only sell at the farm gate, otherwise we must wholesale our eggs to a federal egg grader who buys them at pennies on the dollar :( We cannot control the sales, grading, distribution, or anything it seems in Canada.
The Hens talk less than you are and produce the goods! In the Beginning was an egg Yada,Yada! Any body or farm can make -design egg cartons. Yanky-Doddle-Eggtime
That packaging seems over the top to me. I would look at it and immediately wonder what they were compensating for. (Like little man with a big expensive car) I wonder how much the cost of those eggs is actually for the packaging...? I know that for myself, more detailed packaging is very expensive. It’s difficult enough educating customers on why they want to pay for my eggs verses store bought. Add to that more packaging cost and I’d lose the customers I have.
The marketing on the package initially attracted my attention. But, it also made me question the quality of the product. If your product is good or better than others do you honestly need the package to sell it for you. The product should sell itself. The package is fluff going into a trash can. The eggs are going in me. Which would you rather they spend more time on? Buy the best product not the prettiest package. But then again.. this is America 😲
Free range and pasture raised eggs are exactly the same thing. Some farms rotate pasture and others don’t. Shelter for chickens isn’t exactly barn raising them. This particular video is your opinion not exactly factual.Their chickens have access to grass “pasture “ they also have access to shelter “ barns”. They may or may not rotate pastures because there’s more than one way of doing things. I’m not affiliated with this farm in any way but I don’t think as a farmer that another farmer should be telling anyone that what another farmer claims isn’t true because it doesn’t fit his/her opinion.
John, you are so genuine and I really appreciate what you do and stand for. Your videos are awesome!!! Keep up the good work and thank you for all you do!

Seriously though... is the table crooked or the wall behind it? I can't focus on anything but the angled wall behind you. Please explain.
It looks like repurposed doors for a wall treatment. I think it looks cool and would like a wall in my house like that.
Mat Prather yeah it’s super cool. I’d just like to know more about it. Then I can finally focus on the content and not trying to figure out the wall haha

This is why it's illegal most places to investigative journalism farming most places.

I would call it cage-free and that's about as far as id go.
Informative video sir. High quality
How was their packing was made what materials were used?
The 108 square feet is equal to 10 square meters per hen, which is the EU standard for pasture-raised.

Is vital farms a place source of eggs or are they junk?
This company sells those eggs in Chicago area in all most every store.
I eat their eggs and they are tasty.. Outside of farmers market they are one of the best
I live by a few “Vital Farmers”. I’m not much of a poultry guy but I’d rather eat eggs from their farm than generic. Not many egg farms left in my area besides them.

You said it Vinnie. There’s no substitute for knowing your farmer and knowing where your food comes from.

Don't get fooled by the orange yolk. In the glossy-top egg industry, they are known for using Marigold in their feed to color the yolks.
John my friend, long time no see you. I almost forgot you. All the best from Croatia, EU.

The point I was trying to make is meat birds are all "cage free" so it's really just useless feel good words.
