Love my Calypso. Rolls the load over at the same time it rotates through the recirculation stream. Better wash action and more efficient on water usage during the wash period than the HE impeller TLs nowadays and even some FLs. Rinses very well. 800 RPM spin.
I was always in awe of this machine when I saw the Sears version. I couldn’t get over that it was so different from other machines and it wasn’t cheap either it was very expensive compared to traditional washers.
I had this washer back in 2011 and i will say that the clothes came out pretty clean and it was really good washing pillows and comforters. My biggest issue was that it was shredding my bath towels and my bathroom rugs. But it washed pretty well and i will say that it washes better than most HE top load washers today. Thank u Eugene. Hope to see more videos soon of this washer
This is awesome Eugene! The coolest HE washer ever made! haha. I think recirculating water should be on every HE machine. I really does make a difference.
I have a current Electrolux Luxcare front loader and a Speed Queen front loader. The recirculating pump on the Electrolux makes an unbelievable difference. Best washer that I've ever used.
Brilliant machine, I owned my Whirlpool Gold Catalyst since 2022 and it's still going strong Its sad that they were discontinued! They cleaned our clothes well!
These were pretty well built. If I remember correctly when these first came out consumer reports said these were the best cleaning washers ever up to that point about 1999 ?or 98..right around that time though.
Whirlpool Gold appliances became introduced during 1998. The company actually introduced Catalyst washing machine two year later, followed by Calypso washing machine during 2001. Kenmore Elite appliances became introduced and manufactured the Catalyst washing machine during 1999. The company introduced Calypso washing machine with complete electronic pushbuttons during 2002, followed by the last of the series containing rotary control cycle selector one year later. One Kenmore Elite 90 Series washing machine with rotary controls, including Fabric Speed Combo contained Whitest Whites and Catalyst setting. Too bad Catalyst and Calypso washing machines and matching dryers are no longer designed.
I'll bet it twisted and shredded many a load in its day. But the build quality was there. Thanks for the awsome video Eugene. My friend had the other wonder, the Maytag Neptune TL. It lasted two years, blew its motherboard and since Maytag was sold and bankrupt there were no parts available.
I have a Neptune TL, bought June 2008. I don't use it much but the only trouble has been a bad clutch/pulley during warranty. Parts look-up shows that some are NLA but many are available. The machine control board is NLA but CorecentricSolutions lists it as one they repair (or swap-out for a rebuilt).
Bruce Solomon Neppy TLs do well with loads of heavier fabric such as jeans and towels. Not so well with lightweight/synthetics. I once watched a load of 21 cotton/synthetic shirts sit and not roll over even once through the entire wash period. I had to restart the cycle and help it along. Majority of users would never know that happens since the lid locks and operation can't be seen without taking some specific effort.
Love my calypso. Just replaced the control panel and waiting on a pressure switch to get it back in operation. The u-joint and pump has also been replaced.
I remember that it was with this washing machine that people started requesting a see through lid. Of course, Whirlpool never made it happen until the Cabrios came out. Thee only Calypsos that did have windows, were the floor models at appliance dealers.
Whirlpool still designs Cabrio washing machines and matching dryers, which became introduced during 2006. American appliance companies are designing less top loaders in the United States these days because front loaders save lots more gallons of water, energy, heat, detergent.
These almost feel like you took some properties of a dishwasher and layered them onto a washer, with the low water level not even touching the clothes and the constant recirculating
This was a different concept, the idea was for it to basically simulate a washboard action and get the clothes cleaner. It was one of the first HE washers and I remember 15 yesrs ago these retailed for like $1000 which was unheard of back then.
Awesome video Eugene. This machine looks like it cleans exceptionally well, the recirculating pump is awesome. I would certainly take this machine over almost any new H.E. toploader nowadays. Hope to see more tests with the Calypso. Thanks for the video and all you do. Have a great day :)
This will be a classic to a collector 40 years from now. I personally never really knew what to think of these back then when they first came out. Honestly I'm thankful they are gone though. I like the wash plate washers better than this and that is not saying much.
The tub is suspended on four spring/suspension rods, and there are two frontloader-type shocks attached to the front of the cabinet base and at the bottom of the tub support.
The problem with this washer wasn't that it worked. The tube that ran water back to the tub would work its self loose and spray the motor and fry the electronics.
I did replace the (2) shock absorpers - very easy to do - BUT did not solve the problem - goes into "spin - ob" loop. spins with about 5-6 minutes left then loud "WHAM" then restarts from 6 minutes., WE can stop the load at that point and clothes are pretty dry anyway... -- Thanks for any help or suggestions
Eugene, please stop cutting the videos. Exactly the detail I wanted to watch to compare with my washer was cut. Do you still have the original? Can you post the beginning of the cycle unedited? I want to watch the fill sequence.
In my opinion, I don't think this washer does a good job. The agitator doesn't really move the cloths around as demonstrated by your microfiber towels not coming back to the surface and going back under the water. They just stayed on the bottom of the tub the entire time. However, I do like the idea of the constant recirculation of the water while the agitator is going.
Whirlpool bring this back!

Yes, they are my first choice if I were to get a front load machine.

For a "vintage" washer, this thing was certainly ahead of its time.
Eugene I like how they took the ABC-O-MATIC design and updated it that is so cool

I want one. I wish Whirlpool would bring it back!!
keep checking the scrap yard and craigslist and you will eventually find one. That's how I got mine.
@@firealarmtechguy4444 Thank you!!

I really liked the machine and hoped that it would have lasted him a long time. It washed very well and was very quiet.

And there's a third wonder: The GE Harmony
I own one of these in mint condition. Still runs strong.I heard all of the horror stories about these machines.
Oh wow! This washer is incredible! This video 📹 is cool. 😎
Love my calypso. Just replaced the control panel and waiting on a pressure switch to get it back in operation. The u-joint and pump has also been replaced.
I remember reading that the pump and u-joint were the major problems and the reason this design was replaced by the impeller plate design used today.
I like this washer and I love the recirculation pump

Calypso: *exists*
Impeller washers: *am I a joke to you?*
The Impeller washers are a joke. They don't clean. I have a Calypso too and it is the best machine I have ever had.
Finally found the name of this washer XD
Great machines. Looks like this one could use new suspension though.
These almost feel like you took some properties of a dishwasher and layered them onto a washer, with the low water level not even touching the clothes and the constant recirculating
Eugene YOU ARE SO LUCKY
1:54 filling starts 2:24 first agitation 40:40 spin starts
Too bad these things were ridden with so many issues, but when they do work, they actually work very well even compared to most modern HE machines.
Eugene..... I don't understand the tiny agitator? It sure let's you know it's running! Another good vidio!

Does it clean?
man that agitation is so satisfying to watch!
What kind of suspension have this washer rod or like SQ? Thanks
The tub is suspended on four spring/suspension rods, and there are two frontloader-type shocks attached to the front of the cabinet base and at the bottom of the tub support.
@@DADoESofTX thanks!

What’s the plug near the right of the control panel?
ours goes "ob" at higher spin (even under test mode) - would that be just suspension? shock absorbers, etc.? replaceable?
I did replace the (2) shock absorpers - very easy to do - BUT did not solve the problem - goes into "spin - ob" loop.

if you scrap it. can I have the Touchpad and U joint?
Angle is too high and not enough light, its like looking into a dark well. Cant tell whats happeing..
Eugene did you change your lighting?... maybe a bulb is out?
he spin nice
Eugene, please stop cutting the videos. Exactly the detail I wanted to watch to compare with my washer was cut.

the funny thing about this is this is an HE machine! those didn't really exist back then.
The first he washer was the 1995 Maytag Neptune
Why is the drain sequence sped up?
@@LorainFurnitureandAppliance Oh okay, I thought it was the washer that drained in under 3 seconds! LOL
Do the ketchup test
Sounds like a train
Just out of curiosity ....... Are they all this noisy???
no mine is whisper quiet. I had my overhauled with a new u joint leveler wash plate. when theyre loud they need work soon
Uses ONE Tide Pod…. “they don’t smell very fresh” 👀🤦♂️

Either keep this for your collection or do a giveaway note if any of my comments win I WILL PICK THIS UP
I agree! It would be super cool to have this fixed and cleaned up well and given a new life with someone.
@@zacharygraham9699 I found one on Craigslist.
This washer is scary I don't want to wash anything in it !!!! 😟
I have one I have had no problems with tearing.
Worst washers ever
