The labels have been dying since the 2000s. One of the reasons he 90s & 2000s were so plentiful was because of all the conglomerates. These labels were subsidiaries to high earning ventures. When certain industries dried up and the banks weren't able to literally loan them advances. Labels started folding, case and point (Loud Records). The 2000s saw even more labels fold or be observed. The industry shot itself in the foot in the 2010s by getting rid of physicals, which was the labels final legs. Now the labels are dying and combining with other labels to stay a float. Ironically the big 3 are still pushing physicals.

The average artist is more broke. But major labels are losing money just having one medium to sell. Back then, when u had tapes, CD’s, Vinyl- & with Vinyl-Albums: 12 inch, singles, remixes, that was a lot mediums to sell. Fans would even buy all the mediums of their favorite artists, & music listeners will agree, the sound of each medium are different. As an author and songwriter, I learned the game of self publishing is a killer. Sure, you can publish you're own book, or create your own song; the problem is you find out very soon nobody knows who you are. Promotion and advertising, to overcome that problem, eats your time, energy and money up. The truth is that the vast majority of self published books (uthors) fail. I gave it up and went back to my established publisher. It is even worse in the oversaturated music business. Its always easeir to crate, than it is to market and sell. But, I admit that I'm still pecking away at it.
Thing is most artist either don't want to sell or just don't know how and would rather not learn. That separates the men from the boys. Because even if you do get a major label partner and publisher you still have to learn how to sell.
I ran two independent dance music labels in the UK from 1991 to 2003. I gave ALL artists 50% of the sales (same as MUTE Records, famous for signing Depeche Mode), there was no advance but I kept an open book so artists were welcome to ask any time to see proof of sales from the distributors. If not for the internet I would likely still be running both labels today, but broadband came along and went into most homes almost overnight, from then on sales jumped off the cliff and even many distribution companies went bust. You can't possibly make money from streaming when it's a joke for 250,000 500,000 and so on. If I had sold the same amount in vinyl that would have made me, and all my signings, a lot of money on each release. Piracy and nobody doing anything about it has killed the industry more than anything else. If I put fuel in the tank of my car and drive off without paying, the police will soon come knocking at my door, if not caught before I even reach my home. I’m glad you spoke up and made this clear. I’m formerly an RCA/BMG artist for 4 years and had a 4 album deal until labels started folding back in 1999/2000. I’m an artist with “REAL” amazing talent and I’m made for this industry. Both of my son’s fathers are platinum/grammy award winning writers/producers/record exec’s. None of what’s trending about the exposure of the “dark deals/dealings” should deter any true gifted artist from signing with a label or having their own. Period! The info shared on this video is gold. However, do you really help those who want to own their own label and offer step by step detailed information to assist them in getting it done? You’d be surprised to know who I personally know in every area of this industry for many years and I’ve been around these people and observed what it really takes to be a success. Music isn’t going anywhere and as like all things on this planet…this industry has to shift in many ways. Even the listeners have to change their mindset as well about the entire entertainment industry/business. You can “celebrate” an artist for their gifts but you don’t have to worship them and idolize them and put them on a pedestal and want to be them etc. They are people just like you. Wth is that?! Honor those who are out here saving lives from dis-ease etc. Who cares what car, house or jewelry an artist has.
