I like your idea. Azathoth, the great dreamer. When he awakens, the universe vanishes...but eventually Azathoth will slumber again and the dreams begin anew.
It also makes a lot of sense because Lovecraft was heavily influenced by Lord Dunsany. Dunsany's ultimate god, Mana-Yood-Sushai, created the universe in a dream. The other gods play music to keep Sushai asleep. Could very well be the same thing here with Azathoth -- just more horrific.

I like the idea of a being that is truly alien to us and that cannot be reasoned with, understood or that either doesn`t care about our existence at all or is even aware of it. When Azathoth awakens, we don`t. That is a beautiful and chilling thought!
The theory that Azathoth is at the center of the Earth completely contradicts the style of the rest of Lovecraft's writings. The entire point of the Mythos is that we are not important. Earth is only one of many worlds with life, and Earth is not special. If Azathoth is indeed located in the center of the Earth, then the entire theme of the Mythos becomes meaningless.
True but untrue as Azathoth's perpetual existence is a direct contradiction to our existance. What we simply cannot comprehend in our sanest mind can only bring complete insanity to whatever witnesses it. It is truly the alpha, we are mere specks, not even worthy of thought. To it, our existence is not even worth that passing thought. This is what I assume HP Lovecraft meant when he wrote about Azathoth. The true worthlessness of humanity in the eyes of this mythos, that we can't comprehend them in any way possible. Is what makes this entire Mythos so popular and relevant in the horror genre. They are powerful and knowledgeable beyond belief, that is the end matter. No Ifs, Ands or Buts.
Don't confuse the mundane planet Earth with the concept of something being in "The Center of the Earth," which actually refers to the transfinite pan-dimensional core of all manifested existence, which is both infinitely far away and infinitesimally close. It is the drain plug at the bottom of the transcendental ocean which stops the vacuum of space from spontaneous tunneling to a lower energy state and swiftly annihilating the physical universe in a vacuum bubble. It is the final trace of anything resembling rationality and order, below which lies the Abyss of Unfathomable Chaos - the realm of Azathoth.
The cool thing about lovecraft's universe is nihilism, you dont get it, you will never get it, maybe its all in your mind, what does it even mean to be in the center of earth, maybe its just a theory from a influenced cultist's diary. It doesn't matter what we think or do, why bother, you either live the dream some more or get consumed by it.
He is at the center of earth - as well as the center of other earths - and everything in between. He is basically God, so he is everywhere. I don't think he meant just our earth.
@Hellboy a year late here, but better late than never. Why Its called a "Blind Idiot God" is that It doesnt know anything and is just asleep. Everything in existance and reality is Its dreams. It doesnt think, doesnt feel, doesnt see, doesnt do anything but dream, thats why It's called a Blind Idiot. Nothing can be said more about Azathoth, than "It just IS".
azathoth is the only god in the mythos who can make you feel what the charakters in lovecrafts storys feel. if you sit down and try to understand how azathoth works you can lituraly feel your sanity fall away.
What if, the belief in these deities is so regarded as sci-fi, insanity, or ridiculousness, because it's the will of the deities themselves? That they remain "fiction" so that they may remain hidden and undisturbed, whispering to their prophets, whom still walk the earth to this day, sending them to spread the disbelief?
Michael Umling its my understanding that nyarlathotep would greatly enjoy influencing us in an effort to manipulate our acceptance of such ideas being reality or simply just the ramblings of an insane mind. am i wrong? ive literaly only watched this series in the past few hours and thats all the knowledge i have on this subject, but from how nyarlathotep is described, influencing us to believe such tales are just the product of a sick mind sounds right up his alley.
+9_Bucks Well, the last syllable of his true name is actually a spell that drains the sheer force of will out of another human being, so there's that. I'm not sure what I'd do if a character actually said the whole thing.
+ManggMangg Maybe it would destroy world awaking him? Though no one fully know it.. this idea is clearly similar to Kabbalah where learning God true name basically allow you shape reality, though his true name is beyond comprehension anyway.
Azathoth is a nameless formless embodiment of pure creation, he has no comprehension or realization because he is those things in their purest state. He is the All and the Nothing.
I kinda always thought that Azathoth might only be his physical form, while Yog-Sothoth could be the mental aspect/form of Azathoth that was sundered at the begining of the universe the power needed to start it all so great it injuried him/her/It. I mean if Azathoth is all powerful, and Yog-Sothoth is all knowing it would make sense he could be the mind of the being sealed outside keeping him asleep till it enters the universe. Also if the all knowing Yog-sothoth was his mental side an was sundered from it that would render Azathoth maimed an dumb. Just my two cents.
I have the exact same idea. Azathoth is the unconscious while Yog-Sothoth is the conscious. Azathoth is imprisoned in the center of existence while Yog-Sothoth is exiled beyond existence. Azathoth is Omnipotent but mindless while Yog-Sothoth is Omniscient but locked out the world. The Elder Gods keep them apart for they don't want the dream to end.
This actually makes sense, perhaps it isnt asleep so to speak but is in some kind of lobotomized/braindead state due to losing its mental faculties IE Yog-Sothoth
if you read various short story Lovecraft wrote you'd know that Yog-Sothoth is the Supreme Archetype, any possible possibility of existence, being existence itself and all of its possibilities Yog-Sothoth is the universe and any other possible universe, with any laws, rules, events, etc Azathoth is simply a mindless being devoted to chaos and destruction that reigns over the court ov Azathoth, deep in the Dreamland, where the great ones stay
it wouldnt be true my guess is hes on a whole nother plane of existence because his dreams is what makes our world and when he wakes up all things we know will cease to exist
@@pappiip3908 What if he's able to exist in the reality he dreamed up, explaining how he's simultaneously "outside the ordered universe" and "at the center of all infinity".
Hah, Azathoth: The Daemon Sultan, The Blinded Idiot God, Nuclear chaos, and my favorite "Master of all Creation and Destruction". Azathoth is a god that one should and never will be able to understand since he is beyond every Outer God including Yog-Sothoth and is their supreme and Omnipotent Ruler. Everything is a dream to Azathoth and there is nothing that is not a dream to Azathoth; be it Infinite and Beyond Dimension, Existence, Nonexistence, Life and Death.....ETC. Just like how everything can't be existed without Yog-Sothoth nothing can't be created without Azathoth. While Yog-Sothoth is the Omniverse of Cthulu itself, transcending Infinite Dimension and is existing outside of it at the sametimes. He is still limited by Azathoth, and is still consider a dream to him regardless. Everything will continue to exist as long as Azathoth is still asleep (Keep that flute and music playing). If he were to be awake at some point in time, everything would be ripped apart and be all one again with Azathoth. In short, Azathoth is 100% impossible to be destroy and he is above Unmanned Darkness, Nameless Mist by the way, who is actually Yog-Sothoth parent (only Nameless Mist).
+leon kenedy Yog Sothoth might probably be embodying everything that the Unnamed Darkness and Nameless Mist used to be, that's why we don't hear about them anymore. Yog Sothoth is said to embody everything including nothingness so this is a good theory.
Yeah so since Yog-sothoth embodied everything that exist and will not exist. He is virtually impossible to be destroy and heck he can even killed most Outer God just by blinking his own eye. Even if you destroy infinte dimension and everything outside of it, it would be nothing more than trimming a toenail out of Yog-Sothoth. Thats how massive he is.
leon kenedy All the outer gods are beyond dimension as well. And they are dreams of Azathoth so I don't think Yog can fully get rid of the other outer gods, only Azathoth can do that and that's once it wakes up.
Imagine that in the "higher" reality where azathoth is, he is actually just some dude, out of an entire species. Completely normal, and he got in a car accident and has to be put in a coma, and those dreams spawning the multiverse. Imagine if you are your very own azathoth whenever you sleep, you completely incomprehensible to the beings in your dreams, like we are to him.
Azathoth was clearly a HUGE inspiration for the whole plot in Bloodborne. The entire concept of the hunter's dream and the moon presence is basically the same story. The only difference being that the Great Ones in Bloodborne are not as powerful as Lovecraft's monsters.
+Ulker Bandana The concept of CHIM in the Elder Scrolls lore revolves about reality being a great god's dream, in that if we realize we're integral parts of it, we will either achieve CHIM and become living deities or disappear from reality's timeline in the past, the present and the future, a.k.a. we are zero-summed, thus ceasing to exist entirely even in people's memories. It would be as if that person had never existed. These two concepts are kind of parallel to what we do when we dream: at times, some of us during our dreams realize that what we're living in that moment is just a mere dream; when that happens, we either gain the ability to actively interact with the dream and manipulate it (something we were unable to do before the realization and were thus forced to observe in first person but in a passive manner), or we simply wake up from our dream, we cease to be part of that dream. And this makes me wonder: if we as common mortals are separate entities witnessing the dream of reality alongside Azathoth and not just mere parts of it destined to disappear alongside all of reality when he awakens, would it be possible for a human being to "wake up" and either vanish from reality or gain control over reality?

@@LoadingGame2 yeah, but probably not as constant and as much as in Bloodborne, Bloodborne's story fits so well that maybe, just maybe, it could fit inside the Lovecraft mythos
@@LoadingGame2 Well yeah no shit. Lovecraft invented cosmic horror, or at least refined it and structured it into its recognizable form from many scattered concepts and themes in ancient and classic literature.
reapordeath acually the whole story of raven is a rippoff of the lovecraft universe,if you have ever read the commics you would know that DC totally pulled from that. her father being an old god type being that consumes world's and her mother being a cultist.
As powerful as Azathoth is, I never really thought much of it. I mean it’s not even sentient, just a huge lump of eldritch schmutz at the center of the universe. My personal theory is that it’s actually a leftover from the primordial chaos before existence, a reminder of the time when form, mind and soul didn’t exist yet.
With something like Nyarlathotep, what we have to fear from him is the fact he notices us, and enjoys tormenting us. Azathoth however is more like an inevitability, like a star dying and going supernova, or death itself. We can either fear such things or accept they exist and will happen so might as well not get worked up about it.
Azathoth seems like an allegory for reality and it’s chaos (or the chaos of a theoretical outer realm), since there is no possible way any other entity could know of his existence, and he (reality) is not aware of his own existence.
I have created five Lovecraftian deities: Vozgothoth, the Abhorrent One Kn'ill, the Ruler of Mars Bozghroth, the Skeletal God Glorr, the Haunter of Dreams Xrixxithoth, the Thing of Ash
“ we will wink out of existence and azathoth will be left alone again” why do I feel bad for this being while terrified of something like its existence?
I just started reading Lovecrafts stories. So this is really interesting. So far I'm hooked. Definitely want to know more about these cosmic horrors. I am writing my own stories, and I swear I've been inspired by Lovecraft before I even knew who he was! Right along my style.
Miguel Pereira I got a big compendium. I really enjoy some of the ‘simpler’ ones actually, and I say that only because they seem simple and I believe that is the intent. I don’t know why but I really love Dagon. It’s short and sweet, but the madness of the situation, the inexplicable events, and the way it is told from the perspective of someone with ZERO understanding of what’s happening makes it so much more interesting. It makes me want to know more, and leaves me with nothing but questions! I’ve definitely learned from reading Lovecraft the value of this perspective. Horror is so much more effective when you don’t know what is going on. Knowledge is like a torch, it chases away the shadows. But at the same time, light begets darker shadows, so the ultimate goal IMO is to find a balance. Just enough light to make you ask questions, but not enough to show you what is lurking around the corner....
I'm just now getting into the Cthulhu mythos and I find Azathoth to be the most interesting of the entities. An omnipotent, omniscient being who is completely unaware of it's own godhood. Making it a force of nature, and also making it an innocent being.
Very cool stuff. Before I watched these videos, I knew literally nothing about Lovecraft's universe. Now that I've learned a little bit, I'm really interested in it.
"Another theory suggests that Azathoth wasn't always blind or an idiot, but that he was got in a great cosmic war" could that be the Time War from doctor who? Cause there are ALOT of Lovecraft References in that show (which is also why I love it :3)
Ughhhh.... Great wars between the Elder Gods. Humanizing them. Derleth, I blame you for this nonsense. August Derleth never understood cosmic horror. He actually created good gods and bad gods, rather than leaving them indifferent.
Profane Historian Hey what other good cosmic horror writters are out there other than H.P Lovecraft? I've really gotten into lovecraft and I am ready for more, MOAR.
Derleth couldn't give up the mentality of cosmic entities that are equal and opposite. It is a compelling idea as some of the dominant religions show. Also it lets us believe we have significance in creation. Feeling insignificant, as was Lovecraft's style, is not something most people would willingly embrace. Lovecraft's gods were more forces of nature then powerful individuals. Unknowing and uncaring. Derleth brought it back around to what humans are comfortable with. A battle between champions of order and chaos. Of course one could spin that back around and make it a lie by one of the seemingly truly self-aware and cruel of the pantheon. He of a thousand faces.
@@shady8045 What the guy means by theory, is that some writters expand on Lovecrafr mythos in a contradictory manner, as in the writter was shitty so none takes it as cannon
I started watching last year. After watching all of you elder scrolls videos and accidentally found these videos on the mythos. Which I am not delving into. Thank you for being awesome.
There was always that one quote by Einstein that never left my mind. It's from his letter to Max Born where they discuss Quantum Mechanics. "Quantum mechanics is certainly imposing. But an inner voice tells me that it is not yet the real thing. The theory says a lot, but does not really bring us any closer to the secret of the "old one." I, at any rate, am convinced that He does not throw dice."
Ralph Juaneza Azathoth is near- omnipotent he was in a war and some how he survive but in terms he became slow and stupid and exhausting so he with to sleep. And secondly it clearly claimed that azathoth might have a master who is more greater then him a.k.a azathoth. So he is not The TRUE SO called God.
Gabriel Hughes This sounds really Gnostic. Have you heard of Gnosticism? It also describes how the God of this universe might actually not be the all powerful being of all that is.
Reminds me of the entire driving force of cosmic evolution as well as the evolution of life on Earth. A blind, idiot "watchmaker" who inadvertantly leads to unspeakable anguish and atrocity and creates a universe doomed to be destroyed. I am just getting into Lovecraft and his work is much more intelligent than just grandiose scary stories.
I gotta confess that although I'm fascinated by Lovecraftian Mythos (minus the racism from the original author), it doesn't scare me much. I wonder how much of an impact the Mythos can have on most present day readers as most of us have now some understanding of the vastness of the universe, our limits to comprehend the quantic scale and its workings, our insignificance, our powerlessness before the laws of nature and the notion that our planet and our universe won't last forever.
Don't you think he might have had a hand in that? There were plenty who read his short stories as a child in the magazines, his books, interested in something that would have a near hand to hand correlation with the discoveries some of these children grew up to have a hand in making. The scary bit of Lovecraft I wouldn't say are the cosmic entities, the cults, I feel it is the realization of how puny and inconsequential we are on the grand scale. I don't know, rambling.
To me, that makes the Cthulhu Mythos all that much scarier. We in this modern age as our place in the cosmos develops and advances, lean ever more on science and what we can see or label, hiding under the false illusion with each "major" technological breakthrough each discovery that we are masters of our own fate even when its so clearly obvious we are not. Humanity chooses to to turn a blind eye and continues to do so until something like Cthulhu comes along that yanks this riddled metaphysical tarp right off exposing us to a place we haven't visited since first exiting our mother's wombs. A place where the tools we use to convince ourselves otherwise i.e quantum physics, biology, mathematics, astronomy, logic and thought itself crumbles into fine white powder under an uncaring cosmic tentacle.
If azathoth dreams, he must have a subconscious mind as well, meaning, if he wakes up, theres a very real chance we will live on in the back of its mind
It's kinda strange that drums and flutes are mentioned cuz when i was a kid and i had bad dreams I feel erratic drum banging and my ears would ring every night that I had nightmares. Thank you! Very cool, A̵̬̅̂̐͛͜ž̶̤͚̈́͂͘a̷̡̛̾͂t̸̙̋h̶̙̫̝̄̅̀̃o̸̥̠̫͗̈́͋t̶̢̥̥̗͑͌̕h̶̡̫̹̆!
It is truly frightening to think of an entity whose very dream is responsible for your existance, and whose awakening will mean end of all you know. That realization of being so insignificant, that even the greatest of entities you know shall cease to exist within an instant, truly puts me into perspective.
To add a modern twist to the Azathoth story. I would imagine him as the one running the simulation that is supposed to be the universe and existence we all are a part of. His "Dream" is merely a holographic creation to keep the great and horror handled God preoccupied and entertained. When he stops being interested in this universe and decides to stir again. All he has to do is turn off the program. Thus blinking us all out of existence as he rises again to find himself alone in the real universe that he is left to rule. All of us, our history and everything that has ever happened in the universe we know, he simply turned off as though we would turn off the computer in front of us. Just thought of that off the top of my head while listening to you talk. The Great God Azathoth in today's scientifically minded world would be considered as the one running the simulation that is our existence. :)
This actually got me thinking about something... what if azathoth has already awoken once... Only to sleep once more and pick up his dream right where it left off once again. We would never even know that we had all just ceased to exist a few seconds prior. after all if the dream changes how can we ever understand if anything was ever wrong or different from before then. What if it's just the same dream but we got farther? What if it's an entirely different dream then dream he was having before this? We would never know... And that's true horror of azzathoth. At any moment at any time randomly he could awaken and nothing could stop us from all being erased.... not killed erased. There would be nothing... No one to remember us... not even the old ones would survive... There wouldn't even be a memory because the only one that exists... is a creature Awakening from a fleeting dream.
Azathoth is sort of like Aezazel and Thoth into one. Azathoth seems like some Hindu myths mixed with a Yezidi concept of a God who created and left the world alone for Shaytan wa Malik Taus to rule with his race.
shaytan wa malik taus? did you get your knowledge from the Islamic State? Melek Taus is one of the great angels in the Yezidi religion and he is as far from evil as it gets. If you wanna avoid people potentially hating you forever dont ever mention the word shaytan and yezidi in the same sentence
firstname lastname There is no Islamic state in the modern age. Daesh disbelieve the war ethic of Islam. I studies their own material and the archeological evidence going back no less than 12000 years.
Another great video. I always imagine Azathoth as a sort of reverse black hole, spewing forth the raw substance of existence in all directions from its seat at the center of the universe. The servitors that play the flutes and drums keep the laws of physics operating, perhaps balancing order and chaos so that the universe can exist. Maybe the matter Azathoth churns out is drawn from a black hole in another universe, but I like your take on its being asleep and dreaming.
After you examine the various beings in the mythos, I'd recommend doing a series looking at more modern Cthulhu mythos, such as those written by Brian Lumley. His works are, in my opinion, some of the most well written stories containing the mythos, and he has filled in so many of the gaps in the stories of these ancient horrors.
Side note: Azathoth is sometimes called the Nuclear Chaos. Lovecraft meant nuclear as in “center,” since nuclear power wasn’t a thing when he was alive. Later writers sometimes link Azathoth to atomic power.
I really like the second to last idea you mentioned. That Azathoth is "the last" of his kind, scarred beyond healing from a war of his kind so long ago and so great and terrible we cannot even begin to imagine let alone measure it. I love the idea that there were greater things long before now. Things lost to us. Now all we have is Azathoth whom by mere chance created all that is us. I dare you to imagine what others of Azathoths kind may have been. What could have caused so great of beings to be wiped out save one? What could have scarred Azathoth? Could Azathoth ever be healed and if so, could he regain his sight and competence? What would he think of us? Of all creation? What of the others who might have been? What creations could they have wrought? What real did they exist in far beyond creation? The depth of this theory is greater than any abyss.
Couldn't all the theories about Azathoth's existance be combined into one? He was part of a great cosmic war between some, greater, infinitely more horrible creatures. And he was left alone as the sole survivor. He was scarred by the war, mentally and physically. So he sleeps because he's all alone.
You say there is no relating to Azathoth, but I disagree. He likes to sleep, I like to sleep I'm sure there's some common ground there.

It doesn't matter what we think or do, why bother, you either live the dream some more or get consumed by it.
thelegendarysupersquid ! It’s possible he exists there and the center of the universe simultaneously.
He is at the center of earth - as well as the center of other earths - and everything in between. He is basically God, so he is everywhere. I don't think he meant just our earth.

Or what if all the things he wrote about were based on visions he himself was having and that's what lead to his death by "cancer"?
It was totes a dimensional hunter

If you ever do another Cthulhu campaign you've gotta trick a player into saying Azazoths name aloud.
+9_Bucks Well, the last syllable of his true name is actually a spell that drains the sheer force of will out of another human being, so there's that. I'm not sure what I'd do if a character actually said the whole thing.

Azathoth is a nameless formless embodiment of pure creation, he has no comprehension or realization because he is those things in their purest state. He is the All and the Nothing.

@@MisterBones2910 fun fact elder scrolls has being just like azathoth called the god head
"There is no relating to Azathoth."
I can relate to that.
Wow interesting theory I like it thanks for sharing.
This actually makes sense, perhaps it isnt asleep so to speak but is in some kind of lobotomized/braindead state due to losing its mental faculties IE Yog-Sothoth
if you read various short story Lovecraft wrote you'd know that Yog-Sothoth is the Supreme Archetype, any possible possibility of existence, being existence itself and all of its possibilities
Yog-Sothoth is the universe and any other possible universe, with any laws, rules, events, etc
Azathoth is simply a mindless being devoted to chaos and destruction that reigns over the court ov Azathoth, deep in the Dreamland, where the great ones stay
Guys, remember that huge area in space that had “no space”?

@@buffaloking2788 we're in universe theorizing we know that.
+leon kenedy
Yog Sothoth might probably be embodying everything that the Unnamed Darkness and Nameless Mist used to be, that's why we don't hear about them anymore.
Chuck Norris can defeat Azathoth with just one uppercut
leon kenedy All the outer gods are beyond dimension as well. And they are dreams of Azathoth so I don't think Yog can fully get rid of the other outer gods, only Azathoth can do that and that's once it wakes up.
Chuck Norris is Azathoth's nightmare. If he ever finds him, Azathoth will wake up and the universe will disappear.

The only difference being that the Great Ones in Bloodborne are not as powerful as Lovecraft's monsters.
what you will find is that many games are influenced by Lovecrafts stories; WoW, Dead Space, Mass Effect, the list goes on, and its pretty awsome.

The concept of CHIM in the Elder Scrolls lore revolves about reality being a great god's dream, in that if we realize we're integral parts of it, we will either achieve CHIM and become living deities or disappear from reality's timeline in the past, the present and the future, a.k.a. we are zero-summed, thus ceasing to exist entirely even in people's memories.

Yeah. He’s be a loving outer god and give us the strength to crush our enemies.

As soon as Azathoth becomes a feasible being, it seizes being Azathoth.

I just started reading Lovecrafts stories. So this is really interesting. So far I'm hooked. Definitely want to know more about these cosmic horrors. I am writing my own stories, and I swear I've been inspired by Lovecraft before I even knew who he was! Right along my style.
I agree!
Right???? What stories have you read so far?
Here's another great channel I had no idea existed. Time to binge watch.
I'm just now getting into the Cthulhu mythos and I find Azathoth to be the most interesting of the entities. An omnipotent, omniscient being who is completely unaware of it's own godhood. Making it a force of nature, and also making it an innocent being.
If Azathoth was omnipotent and omniscient, then he’d be aware of his creation and godhood.

He said it was just a theory that he didn’t even agree with, calm down

I am just getting into Lovecraft and his work is much more intelligent than just grandiose scary stories.
Nice vids man, you've got a relaxing voice to listen to and your explanations are really solid :)
Why should we believe the Earth and universe won't last forever? How do you know that for sure?

Such a great theory man! I was just thinking about the connections between Azathoth and Sim-hyp today, but you just pointed things that I missed.
"When Azatoth awakens, we don't" those five words describe Lovecrafts work very well
This actually got me thinking about something...
what if azathoth has already awoken once...
Azathoth lives in the unstructured chaos. When he dreams, it's of an orderly universe.

Nightmares for you! Nightmares for you! Nightmares for everyone!
“wasn’t always blind or an idiot”
Well, I’m glad he is now.
Side note: Azathoth is sometimes called the Nuclear Chaos. Lovecraft meant nuclear as in “center,” since nuclear power wasn’t a thing when he was alive. Later writers sometimes link Azathoth to atomic power.

Well thats just disrespectful.
They say that The Void will consume all.
But Azathoth isn't from The Void...
He IS The Void!
so sad, alone :(
>Meets Azathoth while it is asleep.
>Too scared to wake him up just a little bit.
>Fuck no!
