- GoPro Run from the new XCE Elite Men World Champion, Fabrice Mels.
The 2014 UCI Mountain Bike & Trials World Championships in Hafjell, Norway, opened on Tuesday with the first titles awarded in the Eliminator. Kathrin Stirnemann gave Switzerland their first title of the championships in the women's competition, while Fabrice Mels of Belgium took the men's gold medal.
The event was held in the unique historic village of Maihaugen, on the outskirts of Lillehammer, which offers examples of Norwegian architecture going back hundreds of years. The 840 metre course has everything from gravel road, to rocks and roots, drops and banked turns.
The men's competition saw numerous crashes and some top riders go out of contention early. Defending world champion Paul van der Ploeg (Australia) went out in the first round, while Simon Gegenheimer (Germany) did not even qualify for the 32 finalists.
Mels qualified fastest and won his first two races, before finishing second to Kevin Miquel (France) in the semi-final that put both riders into the medal race. They were joined by Emil Lindgren (Sweden) and Daniel Federspiel (Austria) for the final.
Federspiel got off to a fast start, but then his rear wheel broke and he crashed into Miquel, holding up the rest of the riders. Miquel was the first to get going and opened a sizable gap before Lindgren began to close in the second half of the race. In the final sharp left turn, Lindgren attempted to cut inside of Miquel, catching his pedal in the French rider's wheel and giving Mels a clear path to victory. Lindgren took second ahead of a very disappointed Miquel.
"I had a very bad start," explained Mels, "and I was trying to keep up the pace and to pass Emil (Lindgren) because he had a quite big gap to Kevin (Miquel). Then, at the end, Lindgren came on the inside of Kevin and they crashed, so I had the way open to the finish line."
"It's crazy. I was waiting for the sprint because I had not a very good start, so with this ... yeah, it is beyond my imagination at the moment. I am really happy."
"This is way above winning the World Cup; way, WAY above it. You have the Rainbow Jersey, and you can wear it all the year, and that makes it so nice. You work so hard for it the whole year, and then getting this ... all the hard work pays off." - Спорт
This is how all biking should be broadcast!!! SO INTENSE!!
that dude is stoked. that feeling is universal.
Why everybody keep saying he is lucky?
He was faster than Lindgren and tried to overtake him, but Lindgren shut the door and Mels had to slow down to avoid a crash - several times. Avoiding the crash is part of the race. No luck here.
I have been in similar situations and I have been able to win places, because I decided to stay safe. No luck here, just lots of adrenaline and right/wrong decisions.
if 1 n 2 didnt collide in the last corner, i doubt he got near first
nice video anyway
Luck is a big factor in winning a bicycle race. Guess some people can't handle that.
That's why it's called Eliminator. 1st & 2nd eliminated each other
Impressionnant !
Great race very lucky....
What were their heart rates and power output? Full on.
Victory snatched from the jaws of defeat!! Lucky last corner and amazing, hectic footage. Thanks!

Honestly a legit win!!

That was awsome. So fast and going uphill!! :D
Cool race, looks ridiculously fast.
Omg that speed !!!!
That was intense af!!!
VERY very fine video!! )) sing up
Cool!
fair win imo
i can't see any reason to say he was lucky being the single 1 rider that didn't made any fatal error
Isabelle Op de Beeck Exactly mtb is about also staying upright, not how much power output you have.
Isabelle Op de Beeck
Surprising. I laughed a lot :) thx
Напряженная борьба. Красивый заезд.
he's insane
lucky man
whether a Mt Biker, a cyclocross ace, a road cyclist or a garden cart aficionado you'll prolly enjoy this short race.

Kung Fu wisdom: Use enemy's power against him :-)

La vache, ils sont énervés
so what is their heart rate?
That dude from France got pwned by the course flag
Red line whole time. Sick. 1st should have won easily, but...never give up.
They made the full speed double log hop look too easy.
I counted at least 5 areas where I would have crashed!!
Joder no se escupen porque no tienen saliba

0:25 nice! lmao ahhahaha XD poor guy got a unexpected crash...
Hate to say it GoPro, but the Shimano cameras get better video.
fabrice ik ben gabriel weet je de neef van leander
looks fun, who's got 4 grand so i can get a bike?
Those bikes are more like 10k but you can have just as much fun of a $500 bike.
Daniel Federspiel crashed because of the rear wheel...
Ryan Kelly You clearly haven't compared a $500 to anything over a grand..the difference is huge. If you really want to have fun, prepare to spend $800 minimally. Yes, you can have a great XC bike for 2-4k. The pro's bikes however are generally around $10k.

I never said a $500 bike was as nice as a $4,000 or even a $1,000 bike because it's not true. I said you can have fun on a $500 bike and that is absolutely true.
That is true.
poor judgement for the 2 guys that crashed.. they approach the final curve too fast so the first guy was sent on the edge of the curve almost hit the fence then 2nd guy same mistake too fast poor reaction from the first guy's mistake while the 3rd guy was able to react better not gerting involve in the crash.. its not luck that the first 2 ahead of him crash.. the crash happen due to poor dcxon making.. avoiding, reacting and taking advantage of every situation are part of a race.. no luck at all its focus and wanting to win..sorry poor english
He won all because of the crash.... lol
Crash prevention is part of the race ;)
NeX1310 but IMO he is not supposed to win by the crash as he is the world champion for XCE
It's called racecraft
Part of the race
Yu Boaz Part of mtb is staying upright.
Imagine to hit such tree during the race :-/
That´s sure not for me.
ЯЗЬ?!! )))
Wow France rider choked!
Good riddance to bad rubbish.
Shame on you XD
Impressionnant !
