ニュートラルカーに乗るメカニックたちの戦い
F1などのモータースポーツで見られる熟練のメカニックによる素早いピット作業が度々話題になりますが、1日で百数十kmを駆け抜ける自転車ロードレースでもマシンのメンテナンスを行うメカニックは必要不可欠な存在であり、選手の安全のためタイムのため熟練のテクニックが求められます。とくにレース中のマシントラブルへの対応には0.1秒でも早くレースへ復帰させるために繊細かつ素早い作業が要求されることもあって、F1と同じく静かな戦いとも言えるような光景が繰り広げられており、日本のアウトドアスポーツ用品メーカー・シマノが運営するチーム「SHIMANO Racing」から投稿された動画ではその驚きの光景を見ることができました。
動画で映されるのは自転車ロードレースの三大ツール「グランツール」の一つとして知られるブエルタ・ア・エスパーニャ2014での一幕。このレースは3週間以上かけて3200kmという長い距離を走破する過酷なのためマシントラブルも付き物であり、レース中には多くの参加者に補給や整備が必要となります。シマノは今回のレースに置いてそんな競技者たちを中立的な立場でサポートするニュートラルカー/バイクを出していたようで、動画では各選手への整備を行うメカニックたちの仕事がPOV視点で収録されています。
いわゆるピット作業なのですが、長いコースを進むロードレースにはピットがないためメカニックはサポートバイクに乗って選手と併走しており、整備が必要となった際には集団を掻き分けて選手の元へ。パーツ交換の素早さはもちろんのこと、その選手の元へ駆けつけるまでのプロセスや整備後の対応など中々見ることが出来ない貴重なシーンは非常に興味深いものとなっています。 」

ok just a question. if the neutral service is shimano, they'd have wheels with shimano's cassettes, i suppose. But astana's guys ride Campagnolo! Does a shimano cassette work with super record????

Yes, the spacing on shimano, sram, and campy 11 speed cassettes is the same.
Daniel Jones i knew that sram and shimano were compatible, but shimano and campy aren't. maybe the neutral service has two rear wheels: one with campy cassette and the other one whit shimano cassette. but i'm not really sure

Mostly the teams have a wheels sponsor as well. Most of the team sponsored by Shimano are riding the Shimano or PRO bikegear wheels. But it's possible for teams to choose Shimano wheels.
