- It's enough to make you want to lose your mind.
NOTE: My comment about Home Alone being the most recent movie to top the box office for 12 weeks straight is, in fact, incorrect. Titanic did this more recently. I'd add an annotation to note this mistake, but we don't have annotations anymore. Thanks, UA-cam.

Never clicked on a review of a movie I’ve never heard of so fast-
Amen, brotha.
"Because it's a full moon, and I'm a werewolf, bitch!" may be my new favorite thing.
M c
That is EASILY the top 3 lines of the movie. Hell . . . of ANY movie in 1986!
2nd best line: "Let the dogs loose, they're terribly hungry."
Well, so much for my pointless, mind-numbing research. Don't know how I missed this, but Titanic was actually #1 at the box office for three months and more recently than Home Alone.
I am the dumb.
It's okay Sean, we're all prone to Critical Research Failure. However, by comparison, you do much better research than the Nostalgia Critic, as some of the behind the scenes stories do explain why these movies suck.
Eh,mess ups happen to all of us,smeggy.
Cinematic Excrement You got *most* of your facts right, so that’s a start.
Yeah, I was wondering if someone was gonna mention this...what knocked Titanic out of #1 was hilarious, too! LOST IN SPACE! The Matt LeBlanc one! And it took until APRIL!
No you aren't 😂
Prince was taken from us too early!
I loved the little sketch you performed you should do that more often 🤣🤣🤣
Bro, you should have more subscribers, love your reviews!
I’ve been following Sean for about six years now and honestly, he deserves more subscribers. I think I gravitated to him because his style of reviewing was (and still is) so much more straightforward than a lot of other reviewers (Nostalgia Critic, I’m looking at you). No farting around with silly characters (well, alright, there was the pirate thing, but that worked in the context of the review) or dumb skits, just a dude reviewing bad films with a few jokes in between clips.
I just recently discovered this channel and i am BAFFLED that he doesn't have 10x more subscribers.
Anybody else want to hear Sean's music?
Prince was many things. A director he was not.
His direction of the “Sign of the Times” concert film is highly impressive and he also did great music videos like “Raspberry Beret”.
If you think “Under the Cherry Moon” is the worst, watch “Graffiti Bridge”, the “sequel” to “Purple Rain”.
reviewman ......................or actor.
he was such a creative genius. his style was different, so its hard to gauge or compare to other acting styles. seeing him live & making eye contact was unbelievable. miss that man so much.
@@Camille_Anderson CE review for this film and the 1001 Albums list got me highly interested in Prince and I'm now a huge fan.
The deleted scenes could’ve made it better
I like how you added a different touch on this review: re-enacting a crappy scene. The Oogieloves ringtone still makes me laugh and repeating it almost refrained me from finishing this video!
I still consider “Purple Rain” the greatest rock n’ roll movie of all time. So many quotable lines like “You must purify yourself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka... That’s not Lake Minnetonka!” and more. And the music was incredible. Only Prince could take purple high heels, frilly lace shirt cuffs, and a purple motorcycle and not only pull that fashion off, but make it cool!
💯👋👋👋
Purple Rain was okay - Rock n Roll High and Hard Days Night hold up better
@@stonegasman3866 I honestly haven’t! And I’m a pretty big Scorsese fan! Will get on that right away, sir!
Nah, I'll take "HELP!"
"Helloooo, I'm the Smeghead, I do the mind-numbing research so you don't have to... Even if it's for a Bill Cosby flick."
That's really going to be a pain :( Feel so sorry for you.
Leonard part 6
Bruh, seeing Sean in bed, shirtless, and with a wig is absolutely nightmarish lol
And oh god...next review is going to be painful
Die - Hearts yep it’s Leonard part 6
oh boy...
I know what you mean. I couldn't even get through the whole thing, and Sean was not the reason!
Makes me laugh every time.
17:18- So, anyone else just break out into hysterics at the fact that's still his ringtone even after all this time? I know, that's probably the most minor detail in this entire review, but that just made me laugh.
I was just looking to see if anyone else noticed!! I always skip to that part in the oogieloves review lmfao
Actually for me it was 4:18
now the greatest line ever is because its a full moon and im a werewolf B*tch
Prince is the greatest...but man, this movie was atrocious.
At least it's not Graffiti Bridge that's worse.
The fact that you kept that ringtone from the Oogieloves review makes this my favorite review you've done. I mean I lost it. Also Tricky is hysterical and the Wrecka Stow scene is the best scene in the movie.
Actually "Under The Cherry Moon" (1986) wasn't that bad and this is coming from a Michael Jackson fan but I digress. Sometimes I was able to forget that I was watching Prince 'act.' Jerome Benton had some of THE greatest lines in cinematic history.
"You ever had yo' ass kicked for breakfast?"
"It's a full moon and I'm a werewolf, bitch, now kiss my ass!" LMMFAO!
tbh i thought the love scenes and the kissing wasn't bad at all. prince was so enthusiastic abt it i kinda screamed like an anime girl blushing hard at the lewdness. he kissed like he was throwing all the spices into the bowl. it wasn't really masterful but there was alot of heat in those. this movie is pretty good for a bad movie (welp) it just needed a serious re-write for the plot, an actual director and prince need some acting classes. i thought the b&w filter on an obviously 80s film pretty weirdly interesting as anachronistic (i hope thats the right word) stuff is a thing in media. if only prince quit being a control freak & let filmmakers, screenwriters and acting coaches translate his ideas for him, i think even if he did average movies at least he had a decent legacy in film
@@raggedyhaggity250 It's a good "80s" movie because the soundtrack is better than the movie. Kinda like "Flash Gordon" (1980)/Queen.
Jerald: I respect your opinion ,Still I loved Under The Cherry Moon because of its message.
@@jeraldmcclainofficial6005 Yes, I agree.Another must: I believe I honestly love this film because dont know how to express correctly but I honestly think this film was a SHOUT for Prince : Who He was.But thats just my opinion.
Kind of suprised Graffiti Bridge didn’t win. At least UTCM had Jerome. He was legit hilarious. His line “it’s a full moon. I’m a werewolf bitch kiss my ass!” 😂
17:18 You deserve an Oscar (or at least a Razzie Award).
Agreed I didn't expect to see Sean in a wig but it was a pleasant surprise
I personally consider Under The Cherry Moon a beautiful mess. Stunning visuals with uneven direction. Interesting plot performed via hammy acting. And, yet, it's my favorite Prince movie.
And Parade is one of his best albums and contains great soundtrack music too.
I tell people that you would have to had visited the south of France to vaguely understand this movie
I never knew Prince played so many instruments in his career!
He didn’t. It was record company PR hype for the first album. Prince played 5 or 6 instruments that I know of.
Rest in piece Prince. I've just watched Tim Burton's Batman and i forgot you did the songs for it. I'm really sorry. "Partyman" Rules !
Best song on the soundtrack
May you rest in peace Prince. You may have had "Purple Rain" but also had "Under the Cherry Moon".
So your next review will be.....
(Looks up on Wikipedia)
....Leonard Part 6. Oh boy.
Wait...where are parts 1-5?
P Gaven locked up in interests of national security
Minnesota represent!! I've made coffee drinks at his local caribou coffee (Midwest Starbucks). Ive recorded a demo in his studio and got to see his platinum albums along the walls. I made memorial purple rain drinks at my bar when he died.
He will be missed. He was a legend.
I want to say "Because it's a full moon, and I'm a werewolf, bitch!" all the time now!
Remember when Prince was at the Superbowl Half Time show? I watched it when I was at my Grandmother's apartment in 2007...
Boy was that a perfect fit for a Halftime Show... unlike Maroon 5 and Travis Scott who don't even have something to call a legacy like Prince does!
I STILL can't believe Sweet Victory was only played for 5 seconds as a backseat to bloody SICKO MODE.
@@0123renee Blame the NFL, man. At least a guy who worked on that bit gave some good transparency.
I'm in Minnesota, it's snowing in April, and now this.
Thank you, smeg head.
I used to play bass for Wrecka Stow
Did you at least like Rami Malek’s performance as Freddie Mercury? He was at least the one bright spot in that movie.
nickmesafilms
He even won the Best Actor Oscar for it.
Yep. Along with the music, the performances, production values, and spots where they start to capture Freddie’s spirit, they’re the bright spots. However, this movie doesn’t go all the way with the material, and Queen was all about going one step and beyond, even if they got in trouble. Not a bad movie, but it’s a big letdown. What should’ve been one of the easiest movies to make emotionally powerful, entertaining, or both, turned out to be an underwhelming Greatest Hits album that’s not even that great of a Greatest Hits album.
7:00 I actually really liked THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE.
That's one of my Favourite Disney Films.
Me too. However, it wasn't a huge hit. It was more successful than their previous film, The Black Cauldron, but that's not saying much.
Dude, I had no idea you were so musically talented! We should get together and jam sometime. Also, that kissing is just...eeeuuugggh. It's like getting snogged by an octopus. No movement, just suction. P.S. Nice callback with that ringtone!
I remember my mom taking us to see Purple Rain at the dollar theater. She didn't know that it was rated-R. I suppose that she assumed it wasn't because the videos from it were on MTV. She was very angry after.
Lol 😄
I feel it was an attempt at telling a story in F.Scott Fitzgerald's style, hence the b&w and some of the sets and costumes. It did go well.
did NOT go well, rather
I love Prince Nelson so much and I love Under The Cherry Moon Movie.
Oh yeah!
Please do Graffiti Bridge, too!
That movie was unbelievablely bad!!! 😂
The titles of his movies are on point. The movies themselves, not so much
This review gave me a whole lot more laughs than Under the Cherry Moon ever was capable of. I was dying!! The re-enactment demonstrated perfectly the silliness of that scene. But what were those characters actually going to have a conversation about?? There was nothing between them but animosity and money. Cabbage head was the most endearing name he had for her. I have watched this film too many times to say I hate it. UTCM is watched for the plot by Prince fans as much as Playboy magazines are purchased for the articles. But, yes, there is probably no comparison in the quality of the plot of the movie and the articles of the magazine.
So...you're going to release some videos of you playing those instruments *right* ?????? *RIGHT* ??????
as a Prince-fan, I aprove this review ;)
From a huge Prince fan this is hands down the best UTCM review ever! 😆
Actually Prince is one of fifteen reasons why the parental advisory sticker exists
His song Darling Nikki (I'm sure that's misspelled) started the whole PMRC crusade. Tipper Gore's kids were listening to it
I've been a Prince fan since I was 6, but this review had me laughing out loud. I believe he wanted to do it in black and white because he wanted to do a French film.
10:11 By the way, the cinematographer is the same guy who worked with Martin Scorsese on Goodfellas, Gangs of New York and The Departed.
I actually thought it was very beautifully shot.
Wow. Didn't know that. Cool beans, man.
In 2016, Peter Sobczynski, writing for Roger Ebert's website, reappraised Under the Cherry Moon, calling it a better film than Purple Rain, and stating that the film's contemporaneous negative reception had been due to people expecting it to resemble Purple Rain.
fetch my tiny violin... that was glorious!!!
The phone call reenactment is one of the funniest bits you've ever done, god those long pauses were excruciating.
Despite clicking the bell icon, I never get notifications or alerts that there's a new video until it randomly shows up on the sidebar.
A surprise, but a welcome one to be sure.
You got Prince's mannerisms down really well.
Vanity project. That says it all really. I agree with your opinion that the razzies overshot in their picks for worse. Most of the time when I hear about Prince it's either about Purple Rain or the name change.
Thank you for your review, and Godspeed for the next Razzie "winner" I just hope UA-cam will allow you to show a clip from the Siskel and Ebert review because they were depressed.
Roger Ebert: Bill Cosby, the richest man in show business, $65.5 million income last year, reduced, to catch a Coca-Cola bottle next to his face in order to get a picture made of Columbia. He ought to be ashamed of himself!
Gene Siskel: Boy, you're upset. AND YOU KNOW I AM TOO!
@@patrickshields5251 Thank you. Man apart from North that was a sight from them. Rest in peace you two.
@@LilyBannel And they genuinely do care for the movies as and art and entertainment form. Their 1978-1982 Sneak Previews episodes is now available on IMDb.
I think the reason the Razzies got rid of the Worst New Star award is because of how inaccurate it was. Several of the nominees in that category would go on to have thriving careers like Kristin Scott Thomas, Joan Chen, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Sofia Coppola, Milla Jovovich, Whitney Houston, Roberto Benigni, Jim Carrey, and Ellen DeGeneres. That category was a complete sham.
There’s a few really bad actors on that list.
You're a clarinetist? So am I! Awesome!
Christ that re-enactment was fucking hilarious! XD
I saw this movie for sale on Blu-Ray at Best Buy right after Prince died, LOL
Eraserhead was also an awesome black and white movie and that came out in 1977!
Years into watching this channel and never knew the Smeghead was a musical master
Nice disclaimer in the beginning lol
Nice to meet another musically inclined person ;)
YAAAAAAAAAS! This is what I was waiting for! Well done broski! :3
Also, The man is skilled :O
The phone call scene was soooo funny! Thanks for beeing so damn entertaining. I don't understand why you dont have more vewiers.
I only love this film for Prince. I can't look away from him, and I just adore his voice.
I can't look away from this whole film because of its awfulness. (Love Prince, though--don't get me wrong).
I agree with your opening statement about Prince.
I never appreciated his music much, but he’s definitely Zeus on the musician and songwriter Olympus.
And I have no trouble believing he’ll be considered one of the greats from this age on.
Love the new intro. Gives me a sense of dread as if I'm about to encounter an Eldritch monstrosity, which is the general vibe I generally get from your channel.
Great review!
Would you like a nice, JELL-O Puddin' Pop for your next review?
Fun fact: Kristen Scott Thomas has spoken critically of this film.
"I wish they WOULD stop because I have NO idea what the FUCK is going on!" 🤣 I can't help but feel that is what someone should have said - and probably did, if that person was Mary Lambert - to Prince and his collaborators about the project before actual production began... not that it would have changed anything, but still.
That being said, I actually literally put pineapple on MY own pizza whenever I get it, so I guess that when I'm asked why by some spoiled stuck-up socialite why I do, I'll have to try using that line "Because it's a full moon and I'm a werewolf, bitch!" I promise I will let you know how everything went after THAT, I swear.
About a lot of the costumes, I read about 10 years ago that Versace designed them.
If anyone wants to know how good Prince was on the guitar, watch the cover of While My Guitar Gently Weeps that he did with Tom Petty, Steve Winwood, Jeff Lynne, and Dhani Harrison at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His guitar solo was incredible.
Titanic did 15 weeks at Number One.
Yes, I'm going to be that person...
Normally I complain about having to watch this at 3am, but I’m in Japan so I get to watch this at 4pm! 😄
Prince's reputation never recovered after Kevin Smith declared what he lived with him. And,boy, did he try! He even acted all humble and charming in an episode of "New girl".
Love the review but you forgot the other name he had, that period when was TAFKAP or The Artist Formerly Known As Prince.
Then again, that wasn't what he called himself at the time. It was a nickname created by the media since the symbol he used for his name was unpronounceable.
Gage M. Thankyou. That was the symbol-for-a-name period, already referenced in the vid. It was a protest against sony and their draconian contractual obligations. Hardly anyone understood what a political statement it was, or the battle it represented. A battle that is still going on between record company behemoths and artists today. Prince was an intellect and a philosopher, as well as a musical genius.
@@creatrixZBD Prince didn’t have an issue with Sony, it was with Warner Records.
Hi Sean, discovered your channel recently and was flabbergasted how it had not come to my attention all these years. Subscribed!
One suggestion: When you get to reviewing Cocktail for 1988, could you also mention its co-nominees? I haven't seen Cocktail myself but I find it hard to believe it could top Caddyshack II and Mac and Me in badness stakes.
You not having million of subscribers is just criminal your reviews are just so entertaining.
Under The Cherry Moon is way more fun than Schlnder's List. Has to be said.
The ONLY time I knew who he was at the time was his appearance in Muppets Tonight
I was so sucked in on your Bohemian Rhapsody rant, I agree with you 100% and I was like "yeah, tell 'em, Sean!" but then you had to go on with the review lol Great episode, btw.
I can't believe I'll have to wait for almost two years for the Gigli review (and don't get me started on the wait for Movie 43!), but it sure will be worth it.
I’m waiting for his Showgirls review lol 😂
@@MarissaBollywood that should be good too 😜
MarissaBollywood I really want to see how he reacts to the “Everybody got AIDS and shit” line.
That reenactment though!
19:02 Because Prince wasn’t a musician in the movie. Most of Parade plus some B sides are in the movie as the soundtrack plus some orchestration from Claire Fischer. The soundtrack is one of Prince’s best albums.
Hoo boy will the next review be awkward
Omg thr Re enactment was too good!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Your not my lover, ok. Your not my friend, ok. Your something I cannot comprehend, got it.
Are you...Ctulhulu?
I recognized the jerkass dad's actor from Beverly Hills Cop.
Next time, a movie I've been waiting to see you tackle Smeggy!
8:26 They should have pulled the trick Andrei Tarkovsky pulled in "Solaris" (1972) and Lindsay Anderson did in "if..." (1968), which is to film sections in color or monochrome when the scene needed it - Tarkovsky did it because he was allocated only so much color film. I think Prince wanted to reference French New Wave with the black and white. 12:05 "Planet rock, you just can't stop" is a reference to Afrika Bambaataa's "Planet Rock", an early hip-hop track that came out the same year as "Under the Cherry Moon."
I loved this movie as a kid!!!!!!
The lighthouse would be on your list now.
Best part of the movie was the end credits. I say that because Mountains is a great song and the movie was a slog. The “soundtrack” to the movie (the album Parade) is one of my all time favourite Prince albums.
I get what he was going for with this movie, a modern recreation of French jazz films from the 20s and 30s, but knowledge of and love for that genre doesn’t mean you can make your own.
17:19 I missed your hilarious ringtone!
The scene re-enactment was great but it would have been 20% better if you had a Prince wig.
When you were talking about yourself and Prince, I was really disappointed because you were *this* close to doing a Firefly reference.
Titanic was #1 for 15 straight weeks and came out 7 years after Home Alone. I did the research for you.
Prince always, always, ALWAYS look 100/10.
Wait, you said your doing worst picture winners? In that case, PLEAZ do The Emoji Movie
Its time will come but not from a year at lest
i know your busy with this, but where are your ever going to get to Last Knight and Bumblebee?
-This movie is a masterpiece. When I saw this when it came out it affected me as it let me in to Prince's mind and his boundless imagination. So it's only downside is that it's selfish in that it's all about his world and there he can do whatever he wants.
Thanks for your funny review. As a major Prince fan (who was 10 years old when this came out and did go see it in the theater), it was hard to disagree with your review. I did enjoy it more than "Graffiti Bridge," but only just a bit. And "Purple Rain" was an ok film that has aged poorly. That said, one thing I have to point out is that the film that is considered Prince's best is "Sign O' The Times." Many people don't count it as an actual film (in the traditional sense as it's a concert film mostly). But it is indeed a feature film which was released in theaters (where again I saw it). Make of it what you will, but it is indeed a remarkable film - made even better by the fact that the turkey that was "Cherry Moon" was released only a year and some months prior.
My quick 2 cents. Thanks again for the upload.
Yes Prince was a god of music.I did check about the parental advisory, apparently you are right, I thought it started a few months later on that hearing,oh well I learned something ;p The funny thing is artists loved it, they d even put a single bad word in their record just to get that label, because they sold way more with it.ROFL
worst di-wreck-ta!
WOW, never knew Kristin Scott-Thomas was acting way back then!! I first saw her in the first Mission: Impossible film, lol. Very attractive lady...
Interesting to see past and future Dune actors Francesca Annis and Steven Berkoff) playing husband and wife. Maybe Kristin oughta land a role in Denis Villeneuve's upcoming adaptation. Too late for that now, I suppose...
And speaking of Dune - any chance of doing a CE for that film, Smeg? Or maybe you actually liked it?! 🤔
dude you were HILARIOUS doing that scene. I've never seen this movie ever wanted to as it was unappealing even beFORE it came out. Same with Graffiti Bridge. The Parade album/soundtrack was ok. I cant even listen to the Graffiti Bridge soundtrack. In any case you were really entertaining, and this is coming from a seriously depressed 55 y/o guy. subscribed. 👍
Your reenactment was funny!
Famous Prince lust look meme came from this movie. Gold!
