  • In today's video I will show you how I teach my horses to canter slow, and move from their hindquarters, rather than being heavy on the forehand. I always start with one-rein stops - or as I call it - "flexing them down". This loosens them up, gets them nice and supple and begins getting control of their body parts.

I am not familiar with barrel racing, as I am an English rider. But, I would say yes, you can. While you may not want a high level horse to, a low level horse that is used for pleasure riding as well, im sure it would be fine. It would teach them the difference of “out on the trail” as opposed to the barrel ring where they’re needed to go fast.

Thank you! I will tell them that compliment! Hah! They just took it one step at a time. And yes, it does take time to develop a good canter, but when you end up with a smooth, slow canter…..nothing compares! It’s awesome! How long have you been riding?
