I think the DS Lite only outputs composite video, and there is no native digital HDMI mod for the DS Lite. would be a really bad idea to have a VCR DAC installed, so it would have to have a zero-latency line-doubler installed, but since the scaler would be working with composite video it would still not have great video quality. best option is to output composite video from the Macro to a CRT.
Honestly this, if there was was to output both screens while having the bottom section as the controller, A plug n play consolized DS is something I'd be all over for.
It's not obvious. The video out signal that the DS lite (only one that supports video out) produces is 240p. You would still need a converter for composite video. And I doubt you would like the result

Honestly I have always thought the Gameboy Macro was a bad gimmick, even for a DS with a broken top screen. Because in the amount of money and effort it would take to mod it into one, you could probably fix whatever issues the console had originally. It’s just a worse GBA in nearly every regard, no link cable support, and no GB/GBC support. If the screen swapping mod becomes commonplace though, that feels like a decent compromise.
for me at least its good but i would prefer an upgrade that allows for both screens but removes that nasty hinge (kinda like the form factor for 2DS but with the GBA slot for DS

I would love to see BoxyPixel extend the shell to include the second screen in a slab format similar to the 2DS. The other problem with the DS was the hinge, not necessarily a bad upper screen. Removing the hinge and having a metal shell would fix a lot of issues.
I have a DS Lite with a broken top screen that I’ve been just waiting to find the time/money/motivation to do a mod like this. It’s not meant to be an upgrade but give new life to broken hardware.
It is finally the gameboy advance that matches the gameboy DMG and super gameboy design aesthetic. That being said, I dont want it unless it comes in DMG beige plastic with the grey dot matrix labeled bezel. Otherwise it won't match my vaporwave super DMG themed collection
The fat version is much worse in terms of build quality because it was more or less an experiment by Nintendo to see if there was actually a market for this new dual screen handheld. In saying that you can get a capture card for it...

It's honestly a supply and demand thing. Like how Gameboy SPs are more abundant than the horizontal original. So with the DS, the Lite was just WAY more abundant. You actually have to go out of your way to find and buy the OG. And thus mods are not prioritized. Esspecially since mod development has many barriers to entry such as knowledge and the ability to manufacture them in house rather than through open source project and using a third party like PCBWay.
Congrats on five years. Handheld mods in particular are something I’ve always been very interested in but never had the time for. I appreciate these videos nonetheless which have an educational value to them plus a uniquely high production value feelings given by how well they are shot compared to the great competition in the handheld modding space. On top of that you just have a calm voice which made these video a sort of weekly ritual of mine whenever you uploaded since 2021 to watch these as I eat my lunch. He’s to another 5 years of Macho Nacho to watch as I eat lunch and one day I might actually try some of these mods for myself.
8:24 - Sorry to be pedantic, but those are not vias, they are test pads/points. Vias are the very small plated holes that go through the board which connect traces on the various layers of the PCB together. Many test pads are connected directly to a via and nothing else while others are simply inline with a trace or sitting on a ground plane. That said, you perform the mod excellently and I love what you do with the channel! Congrats on the 5 years!
metal shells are so expensive, but they look so good. i'd say they even take the edge over clear shells thanks to their durability, imo. also, that was some wicked soldering man :)

I think it looks sick, plus if you'd ever want a full metal handheld, it's gonna be really expensive no matter what you do. This is basically a cheap way to get a full metal gba console, and it can even play some ds games on it. Original gameboys are really expensive nowadays, especially if they are in good condition

I don’t see the appeal to this mod at all. GB Macro made sense when it was a plastic shell used to revive a broken console on the cheap. The backlit DS screen is nice but pales in comparison to aftermarket GBA screens

Although I appreciate the work behind this, I think it's a waste because you can't use all the possibilities this hardware has to offer. If the upper screen is broken the pieces for replacing it aren't very expensive.

As the owner of a definitely jankier version of one of these I can vouch that they are fun especially with screen swapping. They just make little sense in 2024 with stuff like the miyoo mini and flipzizzle around.
I bought a DSL to Macro mod because of you and never got around to it because I *hate* the bump from the original screen and the milled shells are just too spicy for my budget these days. Looks so good though

It won't be long til someone makes a headphone extender that sits flush with the case. Probably easy to make and 3d print, the hard part will be the bit of metal.
I would want to put membrane switches under the D Pad to fix how mushy it is. That could introduce more problems with how loud each button press becomes, so noise dampening Material might have to be added, maybe a thin film of silicone? One of my personal gripes with the ds lite was the gba game sticking out, but they fixed that
I like that the refurbish market is opening venues to finally make a DS single-screen fully functional. It'd be nifty if they could create shells that made the build shaped like a Super NES controller, since the DS basically has all the inputs of that console.

I used to work in a retro game shop and fixing a top screen of a DS lite is EXTREMELY difficult and not really cost effective. Therefore turning them into something like this can be a fun little upcycling project. I do agree that doing this to a functional ds is silly, but for ds with a busted top screen or something this is neat
I saw somewhere on the internet someone built an adapter PCB To allow connecting a DSi XL bottom screen to a DS Lite mobo. I think it was originally on reddit. I think it was feasible to do this for both screens but said poster only bothered to do the bottom screen I think. It mostly works via just a passive adapter so would be a cheap mod to do. Anyways they modified the shell to fit this monster and it looked pretty cool. A variant of this custom shell should be made to accommodate this. ;) DS Lite XL would be awesome to have. :D
If the creators are listening I'd absolutely love a plastic version of this! As cool as metal handhelds are I don't really like to use them long term, found that out with the unhinged shell.

Sonic Rush and Wario Ware come to mind, yes. Also Metroid Prime Hunters.
Many other games are fine with just one screen however.

There was a time that DS's were so cheap, that buying replacement parts wasn't worth it vs the price of a used DS so the ds macro was the result.

I've done two macros now and repaired another 3DS and i never realized I had the shoulder button springs in the opposite position.

100 years into the future, someone is looking for those L and R trigger that where wrongly CNC'd, and finding out how super rare they are.

just remove the umd drive and there is tons of free space
@@tumbles8350isn't kinda the umd drive quite a lot of the fun with a psp? Kinda becomes a little like removing the gba slot from this one and saying "just use a r4 card"
@@trainsurf Well yeah but if you are going to just hack it anyway there is no point to the umd drive. I put in some bigger speakers, sound reactive leds and a usb c port in the und drive area.
