Bob Dylan - With God on Our Side (Live on BBC, 1964) [HD FOOTAGE]

- This is one of the very few surviving television broadcasts from Bob's early days. He recorded this in early May 1964, and it was subsequently aired on 12 May 1964, five days before his legendary concert at Royal Festival Hall, which you can listen to here (MAKE SURE you follow the link in the description for the complete concert): • Bob Dylan Live at Roya... .
FUN FACT: This clip was part of a program called Tonight, hosted by Cliff Michelmore. A 17-year-old David Bowie (then known as Davy Jones) appeared on the same program in the same year as Dylan, as part of a story on Bowie's newly founded "Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Long-Haired Men". No doubt Dylan would have cheered on such a crusade. Find Bowie's interview here: • Video .
Love & Peace,
~SP
NOTE: I've uploaded this performance before, but the footage quality was inferior to this, probably since it was from a VHS. I have unlisted that upload, but if you're interested, you may access it through this link: • Bob Dylan - With God o... .
23 years young
Who knew after 52 years this young boy would win the greatest prize
Well deserved
If you're talking about the Noble - he chose to not accept it.
@@cguzelli1 Is it so ? I guess he accepted it as he delivered his "Nobel Lecture" which is present in YT
@@surajporey1484 - he NEVER attended the official ceremony banquet in December of that year to accept it and people wondered if he ever would. Some six months later when he was on tour, he stopped in Stockholm where they held a private ceremony in which he did accept. I stand corrected for not stating the entirety of the event. There was also conditions he met to receive the prize money which at that time was close to $1M. Doubt he would had done if not near Sweden.
@@cguzelli1 I bet he took that money tho. He would be genetically incapable of not doing so.
This is a very short version of the song. Regardless, the performance is stunning. Cheers!
He clearly rush the pause in comparison to the recorded version
Indeed. I linked to it before listening and the point I was making about Judas completely lost in the shuffle.
God bless you and the World❤️❤️🌹
I love Bob Dylan from A to Z ,his music his personallity,personality, style,his straight forwardness,forward essay, lovesongs,since,I was turn on to you Bobby,I love you as my favorite musician,for 45 years,forever,your A poet ,A romantic,A bluesman,A holy man,you rock,always.

P.s. Thank you Timmothy Flannigan from Keansburg, for turning me on to Thee best music man of all time.
How can someone not like Dylan???!!!! (the 3 dislikes!)
Bob makes ya think .. and some folks dinna like to be made to think. Namaste
Well their idiots
People are different. I can respect a difference in opinion and taste
Love You Bob Dylan
So prophetic
Guess God's not on our side
I love how he rushes the singing in this version.
One more for the road...
I'll not tire of listening to Dylan.
i'm 74 and just learning this song to listen to... Dylan reinvents himself lots of times.
Its great to hear all old Dylan music, thanks for sharing...from a life long Scottish fan..
I love the lyrics to this song - not alway a fan of Bob’s singing, , but this caught my attention. For a young man to write such strong and meaningful words. Wonderful.
Crossroads.
If you don’t like his singing it’s cause you are boring
Why would the writer not sing his song in the same vain he wrote it in. PERFECTLY.
@@AlexanderStHill his voice isnt objectively pleasant. stop being a snob. you can appreciate lyrics without a melody or a voice
For me some of Bob's songs wouldn't sound right if he wasn't singing them.
You work with these selected footage and interviews should be founded and protected by the USA, cause you are basically taking care and spreading in the world things that have an incalculable value. Thank You!!
This is unreal Mr Wylde, it’s moments like this I thank god you’re a bob fanatic 🤣❤️
Thank you piglet, I needed this today after all the going on’s in Trafalgar Sq at the weekend. 👍🏻👍🏻🍺🍺
Beautiful. Thank you. So much magic
YES beatiful
Still not wild about Dylan's singing; but his music is superb and insightful for someone so young. Some art is relevant and timeless and his is such. Definitely worthy of the Nobel Prize for Literature...As one of his greatest influencers; Hemmingway.
Thank you. Great channel for a great man.
I am fond of his voice
So am I. His words are outstanding, of course, but everything about him, including: his voice and even his harmonica, it all speaks to me in a way I can't really describe.
sp brings us obscure vids from our greatest artist. not a bad gig. respect and gratitude.
Not the greatesr
Absolutely Magnificent. Nothing to add.
Such a terrific version of this song!
As always Thanks SP!
Perfect 👌 thank you so much 😊 love 💕
I remember thinking it different to hear the mention of God in a song .The idea of God on our side still is relevant.....
I love the idea behind the song, my favorite part being about the germans. "They murdered 6 million in the ovens they fried now they too have God on their side". Just pointing out how all you need to be the good guys is to be on our side, and how hypocritical that is. Then he finishes with saying if he has to fight he will, but if God was on someones side he would be proventing war not winning it. So amazing
even more relevant now than it was in 1964 .....
Brilliant. pity its not longer, not the full version, but this is the best version even tho its only half the song. Dylan breathes through his nose well 🤣
SUPERB
🎼🎶⭐️
Pity it was cut. The best part is yet to come.
Splendido genio
Always ahead of his Time.
Thanks S.P
Happy New Year
Is that the full thing or is the song just cut early and were there any more songs performed in this set?
His voice is so good here in comparison to some of his other live stuff of the time
I believe the song was cut by quite a bit as they often did back then when on air.
Our American folk hero spoke for us and still does.
"and if god's on our side, he'll stop the next war..."
Never will happen....will it?
A great teacher of our times...
Still the best war protest song ever. How people who call themselves Christians can support war and Jesus at the same time is the greatest question of our time..
Forever 🎹🌟
Great song & video😁👍🎶🎶🎶
He's the next big thing, this guy.

We need this now xoxoxox
❤️
It’s more true today 2024 than ever. Yea. Dylan. Sow it coming then …. Here now.
Dressed as the 66’ bad boy, nobody saw it coming...❤️
I did. I was 12 and i said"this guy is going far" to my father, who kept telling me to turn down the volume of that noise. But he bought me all the records until i could buy them myself.
Bad boy? Not necessarily. He was more like Beatles, as far as his looks go. Rolling Stones dressed more closely to bad boys
Magnific !✌️👍impresionant
Today, especially today, pray for peace everywhere.
First heard this when Manfred Mann with Paul Jones covered it. Excellent version.
It's kind of weird the way it ends on the 2nd verse. I'm sure he didn't perform it that way. The later verses of the song would have been controversial at the time. Did auntie beeb censor him?
Most prob. Most songs were only 3 minutes long in those days, so it would of been shortened for TV
@@stonedtommy403 It doesn't seem shortened so much as cut off. If Bob had been told to do a 3 minute version of the song he would not have ended it like that, in my opinion.
@@stonedtommy403 Actually this version of the song is way less than 3 minutes. The entire clip including the intro is only 2 min 21 sec.
@@5thEstatePress I s'pose ur right. Maybe the tv ppl edited it.. which is sinful
No censorship, not in a political sense anyway. You can see that Bob is not performing there - he hasn't got a mike in front of him, nor in front of his guitar. This is playback, the way the BBC always showed most popular artists at the time (look up an Beatles TV appearance from 1964-65, that's the way it is). The BBC themselves chose this song for him to "perform" off his album (so deciding mid-way that it is crossing some unforseen line would be a bit weird) and Bob is just playing along - that's his allowed spot among the other popular acts who were in the charts at the time*, showing off some of his material. But this song is 6-7 minutes long and he was never going to get that. No one did. Not at that time.
*On a sidenote, Bob's first albums were noticeably more successful in the UK than they were in the US. He was seeing eye to eye with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones there, whereas he hadn't had any major breakthrough back home yet and wasn't much known outside the folk/protest scene, whose automatic political speech and slogans were starting to bore him to death. Let's not make him the extra anti-establishment punk-rocker that he's not. He always wanted mainstream success, to get his number one, and the next year or so would be dedicated to hitting the big time. He just wanted it on his own terms, keeping his poetic integrity, but he was never dedicated to making empires fall.
Thanks
Is this footage owned by the BBC? This film should be available in the Bob Dylan Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma
😎 Mi regalo de navidad
Great song, timeless lyrics - albeit abbreviated here.
Gotta take a break from the news (not good) so thank 💞 God for Swingin'🐷
The best protest songs transcend the politics of the moment . Woody Guthrie + Dylan wrote 'em
Bob has God on his side CHRIST REALLY LIKES HIM AMEN
Oh my name it is nothin’
My age it means less
The country I come from
Is called the Midwest
I’s taught and brought up there
The laws to abide
And that the land that I live in
Has God on its side
Oh the history books tell it
They tell it so well
The cavalries charged
The Indians fell
The cavalries charged
The Indians died
Oh the country was young
With God on its side
Oh the Spanish-American
War had its day
And the Civil War too
Was soon laid away
And the names of the heroes
l’s made to memorize
With guns in their hands
And God on their side
Oh the First World War, boys
It closed out its fate
The reason for fighting
I never got straight
But I learned to accept it
Accept it with pride
For you don’t count the dead
When God’s on your side
When the Second World War
Came to an end
We forgave the Germans
And we were friends
Though they murdered six million
In the ovens they fried
The Germans now too
Have God on their side
I’ve learned to hate Russians
All through my whole life
If another war starts
It’s them we must fight
To hate them and fear them
To run and to hide
And accept it all bravely
With God on my side
But now we got weapons
Of the chemical dust
If fire them we’re forced to
Then fire them we must
One push of the button
And a shot the world wide
And you never ask questions
When God’s on your side
Through many dark hour
I’ve been thinkin’ about this
That Jesus Christ
Was betrayed by a kiss
But I can’t think for you
You’ll have to decide
Whether Judas Iscariot
Had God on his side
So now as I’m leavin’
I’m weary as Hell
The confusion I’m feelin’
Ain’t no tongue can tell
The words fill my head
And fall to the floor
If God’s on our side
He’ll stop the next war

deepest meaning, expensive lyric
God bless yuo
BBC pressure to cut the best bits of the song?
All of us need God on our side whatever side that is dudes
🤝
Brilliant, shame he wasn’t allowed to perform the full song, but that’s to be expected as UK’s BBC Radio never played the full version of Like a Rolling Stone even when it was climbing the record charts in 1965.
Shame it cuts before the punchline
They cut him off.
Ever wonder what Dylan's middle name is? Poise.
Bob Dylan 🎓
What happened to him?
he won a nobel peace prize in literature
@@owenwilcox66 I am not sure that had much of an effect on him.
It was probably us.

This is monumental .. beautiful ... Thanks !
But to the person ahead of me.. I don't think BD re invents himself ..
He's an ARTIST, and its definition, artist, .. keeps on creating .. I don't think it means , as always stated .. that he's re inventing himself .. .. Janey
Couple of these comments have completely missed the incredibly critical point of the song. we're fucked
I really think he was from some other dimension.
Com Deus Do Nosso Lado
Oh, meu nome é nada, minha idade, menos ainda
Oh, A Primeira Guerra Mundial, rapazes, lacrou nosso destino
Portanto agora estou me despedindo...
Estou cansado pra diabos.
A confusão que sinto, nenhuma língua conseguiria descrever
As palavras enchem minha cabeça e se derramam sobre o chão:
(Que) Se Deus está do nosso lado, ele impedirá a próxima guerra
Now I can't think for ya, you'll have to decide - if Judas Iscariot had God on his side.
A perfect lyric documenting just how violent human beings are, how we never learn, poppy’s remind us that we should never go back - but we keep doing it, if we stopped building weapons and spent it all on sustainable / renewable energy, food and essential infrastructure around the world, we might live a longer happier life…Ditto the planet, instead we compete for everything….. “ if fire them we’re forced to why then fire them we must “. We truly are doomed.. god won’t stop us but maybe Klatu and Gautv will..!!!!!
what's the type of guitar he played ?
probably one of his famous Martins
It looked to me like a Gibson Nick Lucas Special?
Great voice on this performance - kids: don't smoke too much ;)
wow hearing tis type and watching it being performed cancelles out the bad of the internet god us ....
Still the best war protest song ever. How people who call themselves Christians can support war and Jesus at the same time is the greatest question of our time..
He wouldn't want it to be called a protest song.
Why?
Rip off of the “Patriots Game”
Which is itself taken from an earlier ballad.
God bless you and us. only true believer Whole planets for name of The Jesus Christ. Amen. 🙏💓
Quiet, you.
I hope ur joking this song isn’t rlly about faith it’s more abt blind faith and how ppl will excuse horrible acts of violence, by simply saying ‘we have god on our side’, there’s even a line that says “but you don’t count the dead when gods on your side” the song is a masterpiece and everyone has the right to faith but that ppl shouldn’t blindly do anything they want and excuse it with having god on their side
Why are they always so subversive? It's almost like they have an intrinsic revolutionary spirit.
i guess this was irony?
Dylan & 2pac r the same person

patronizing commentator pissed me off; cut before even Bob's comments on WW1; hence it got my thumbs down :(
