One of the few (and certainly most unexpected) rock drummers whose solos wouldn’t have had me running to the bar 😂. This sounds easy til you try to break it down - like most good stuff. Another well constructed lesson ✌️
Mike, I grew up in East-Germany and had my first Sweet encounter over the radio at the age of 10 with Wig Wam Bam. Sweet became my absolute super idols over night and in admiration for Mick I started with drum school when I was 12. In 1987, I finally met Mick for the first time along with Andy Scott and even a few times more the following years. Your tutorial on Ballroom Blitz is just so well made and explained. In memory of Mick I am determined to get this iconic drum lick rolling best possible. Thanks so much, Enrico
I play this with a later Bass player of the Sweet, who performed with Brian C. Cheers for the great breakdown video 👍 It's great fun to play, so much to think about throughout the song.
Nice one Mike. I've been workiing on this song for a while now and yes, it's tricky! There's some stuff on UA-cam from Sweet's lost German concert filmed in 1974 for a TV show which came to light in 2016. Some pretty heavy stuff going down and a great drum solo from Mick. They could have been so much more.
How To Play The Drum Beat From "Ballroom Blitz" by The Sweet Been asked about this one quite a lot! Classic little example of the “train beat” (ua-cam.com/video/IpCvLCQlQfE/v-deo.html) with a couple of variations added. Some videos about developing your ability to play accents in your single stroke roll, essential skill to make this sound authentic: 1.Accents on the beat - ua-cam.com/video/WcQsytDUnBs/v-deo.html 2.Shifting accents - ua-cam.com/video/H1eyi1RLqVM/v-deo.html And video discussing the “I’m struggling with...” concept and the 2 ways to build up coordinated grooves (which I touch on in this video ) is here: ua-cam.com/video/r-WX0F0STTY/v-deo.html Thanks for watching and have fun :) Mike 675+ free drum videos at ua-cam.com/users/mikebarnesdrums If you’ve enjoyed this channel and found it useful, please support it and help it grow at www.buymeacoffee.com/mikebarnesdrums
Took a look at the video, Mick had both feet on his bass drums until he moved his left over to close it for riding. Maybe he was one of those that varied his part. This song came out the year before I started playing drums and stayed popular for a few years. I grew to hate it for a while because of the number of times bandmates would look over at me and (imitating Brian Connoly) say "Are you ready, Steve?" AAAAAUGH!! I'll admit to throwing a stick on occasion. Now it's back to being a nostalgic pleasure for me. Thanks, Mike!
@@steveanderson6180 Ha nice one Steve, good call with the double bass drums - Yeah optional to play two bass drums, if you have them! And yeah as I said hi-hat foot part also optional, gives it a good feel for live IMO but perhaps not 100% authentic to the original and leave it out if preferred. Cheers Steve 👊🏻
Thanks Mike, I will use the start with the kick then add more as I go method, then once I have it in my head, I will understand the groove, lots of fun. Cheers Wayne
I use to play the beat with an inverse paradiddle starting with the left (LLRL/RRLR), so the accents sound like in a stereo effect which sounds pretty cool for me :)
"Are you ready steve" - love this song!! Thank you for tutorials they are super helpful. I have a request, Black Sheep by Metric, from Scott Pilgrim vs the World would be amazeballs!!
Hi Mike, did you ever get around to uploading a full version of this song? It's one I've been determined to try and learn properly, as it was the first song I heard as a little kid that got me so interested in drums! I'm ok with the beats, but the two main sections of tom fills still throw me, particularly the tom pattern towards the play out. Would be good to have these in notation to work on if possible, as there is some funny timings to the fills, which I'm having trouble working out. cheers.

Sir i have been watching you videos since the last few hours and I am sure it will help me a lot. Thank you so much for that. I wanted to tell you that, I am a beginner drummer, so I am trying to play easy songs for practice. Can you please help me in breaking down the bridge part of the song "Bloody Valentine" by MGK.
I saw Mick Tucker play this a long time ago, both live and on the record I believe the snare is slightly ahead compared to what you´re playing here. Also the first demo part here (0,10ff) is quite a bit off, isn´t it? I may be wrong, I´m a producer, ex DJ, backline/FOH tech, not a drummer. Just curious.

Doesn’t sound the same on electro kits,, I’ve got a mimic pro and it still sounds pretty crap,,,so don’t worry if your trying this on an electro,,,it will sound much better on an acoustic.
Cheers Mike. Long time Mick Tucker/Sweet fan and as a drummer I was happy to see him play this live a few times. Really good point you made about how he 'swung' the beat and it's a fair bit trickier than most would appreciate, especially the last part of the pattern. I've seen a few tutorials and like most the (two?) left hand snare accents which follow on from the bass drum (on 2 and 4) at the end of the pattern are always where the doubts/variations arise. A great drummer was Mick. ua-cam.com/video/tqketmsRz1E/v-deo.htmlsi=FEd4cRmNTdSbWMjI
Mick Tucker (& Sweet) are my absolute favourites.
Mick Tucker is such an underrated drummer especially on the Sweet’s much more rock albums. Well explained 👍😬
Yeah great drummer, great feel. Cheers Jamie!

Ha, still on the list!
Was working on that tom pattern near the end with another student recently!
That takes me me back, it was one of the first singles I ever bought, have you ever played "No time this time" by the Police?
aye I can get around this channel. good ratio of show and tell.
Cheers man, thanks for watching and glad if useful 👊🏻

Hey
What are you using for a drum stool?

Good vid.
thought I heard footloose beat there for a while
Similar overall rhythm, but different kick part and the snare is not played as and accented roll as here. Thanks for watching 🥁
This doesn't sound right, it sounds like something is missing, like extra beats from the snare?
This is what I'm hearing and is consistent with music scores of the drums for this tune. Cheers for watching man :)

Get a wireless mic
I have one, picks up the acoustic sound of the electronic pads too much. Thanks for watching :)
