  • Thank you to new subbie and social work undergrad AlmaLulu for requesting this video on school social work…Many think that in order to help kids in schools you have to become a school counselor-NOT the case- School social workers actually have more time and flexibility to work with students one on one on various mental health and social issues. We pick up where other school staff leave off to serve each student anti their family!
    If you have any more questions please ASK away!!! FYI most school social workers are required to have a Master’s in Social Work and be licensed in the state in which they are working.

    I love your channel. I have been looking for other social workers that do what I do. I find many guidance counselor videos but not many social workers. I actually work for a mental health agency but my office is at the school. Please keep making videos!

    Hey there. I am new to your videos and I have been soaking them all up. I finish my bsw this year and I started searching for msw programs with a school social work focus after finding your channel. I didn't fully know what area of social work would be the best fit for me until watching your videos. I have strongly considered school social work in the past but watching your channel confirmed it is the right direction for me, and the area I feel I will be the most useful. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and insights!

    Have you noticed any backlash from school counselors after showing this video? I would like to show this video in the high school that I work. But I don’t want to offend the school counselors. A lot of the school counselors do social/emotional counseling at my school. I think this video is super important and does clarify a lot. I went back to school after working years as a graphic designer and chose an MSW over a school counseling program because I knew that I didn’t want to do scheduling and grades. Plus I also knew that if I lost my job and had my LCSW I could work anywhere in any clinic or hospital.

      +Rachel Zavertnik Thanks, I am absolutely humbled and grateful that you are hoping to share my video, I think there is a lot of misconceptions and and misunderstanding regarding the roles of a school counselor. I often educate my students and families about the differences in professions (counselor, LPC, LCSW, etc). And you are correct there are many school counselors holding an LPC that are comfortable working with social and emotional issues. The video was made to help others searching for the right avenues to a profession in schools...I’m glad you made your way to social work!

    What type of assessments do you usually do, if any (e.g., BASC, Conners, ABAS)?
    In one district that I interviewed in there was a whole hallway of social workers but not one school psych (either on the MA or Ed.S. level). I assumed that a couple of the social workers did whatever cognitive and achievement assessments that a school psych would do (again, on the MA & Ed.S level) in that particular school.

    Can a school social worker holding an LCSW expect to make? Especially starting out?

    Lets say, there's someone who loves helping kids and very concerned about there home lives and offering all the help you could give. Okay. But the one who's interested in all of this has anxiety herself/himself, and it's severe, how can that person deal with it and get better. Especially if he or she is an introvert.

    How do you deal with schools assignments that have high concentrations of abuse (emotional, physical, sexual, etc) along with socioeconomic disparities?

    • @SocialWorkScrapbook
      @SocialWorkScrapbook  6 років тому

      Reports to child protection must be made, followed by close collaboration with child protection,family and community resources. My district provides emergency food or clothes that can assist in building rapport with families in high socioeconomic need.

    Hii, i found this video very helpful! i am a current college student figuring out whether to do school counseling or school social worker and with how i want to help kids and the youth, this video made things click better. I guess my struggle now is in figuring out what the best bachelors program to take is. some recommend psychology while others a BSW or something in education and it is troubling. Although i know a bachelors in education is more for the counseling field. So i was wondering what do you recommend is the best for the youth/school social work field?

    • @SocialWorkScrapbook
      @SocialWorkScrapbook  6 років тому +1

      +Jenny roldan I bachelors in social work will get you to your goal quickly (less than 4years) but any bachelors in psychology, sociology , educational psychology or humanities will work!! You Typically need a masters in social work to be a school social worker - good luck and let me know if I can clarify anything for you!

      Social Work Scrapbook thank you! another question I have is what would you consider difficult in your career ? are there any tough points that u should be aware of and/or obstacles I may face? each person I mentioned that I'm gonna go into this career told me it's gonna be a difficult road and or a stressful road. now that's something that is okay with me because this is something I really want to do but I want to know what to expect along the way as well and what to prepare for.

    • @SocialWorkScrapbook
      @SocialWorkScrapbook  6 років тому +1

      +Jenny roldan great question... I heard many of the same warnings.... I would not consider the following difficult but they can be viewed that way by others - burnout and home visits. The content of what you will hear from clients (children and families) can be burdensome- for many reasons this is why burnout is common in the field of social work. As far as home visits, this concept scared many folks, venturing into homes that are in need and meeting the client where they are at can be seen as difficult. It can take some getting used to. This is a wonderful video idea... look out for vid on this in the coming weeks✨

    Question: if you had a choice to go back and do a BSW would you? or would you have stuck it with Psychology? or would you do both? I know that I want to get an MSW in the future. However, I am currently a Psychology major. I go to NCSU that also has a great program in SW, so I am trying to decide the best path for me!

    • @TatumHarris
      @TatumHarris 7 років тому +1

      stuck it out ***

    • @SocialWorkScrapbook
      @SocialWorkScrapbook  7 років тому +2

      If I could go back in time - I would not change a thing. For me...Psychology provided me a well rounded education. I believe my strengths in research and psychological disorders come from the courses I took as a psych major. The best path for you may be different...I would consider how important it is for you to finish quickly- One year of Grad school is pretty tempting...
