Wanted to add further important context to the small section touching on Kerala -i realize watching the video back that it comes off as painting Kerala as a utopia, that is not true, we also have issues along caste lines and deeply rooted islamophobia which present itself in different ways. For instance the love jihad conspiracy theory which is weaponized against muslims today originated from some christian leaders of Kerala, spread to Karnataka, and then it was picked up by the BJP and spread across India. So its important to note that it stemmed from an already existing islamophobia within affluent christian communities in Kerala.

Thank you for this informative video. I would like to mention that while Mahatma Gandhi did have his flaws, his views on the caste system did change with time. I would suggest that you read this:
'Documented evidence, including Gandhi’s own writings in the 1920s and ’30s, would indeed be considered casteist. But the documented fact also is that the latter-day Gandhi gradually became a social revolutionist advocating inter-caste marriage, especially between Brahmins and “Harijans” in order to dismantle the caste system “root and branch,” and publicly acknowledging that “when all become casteless, monopoly of occupations would go.”
Gandhi devoted much of his last years of his life-fighting caste as well as religious prejudice. He was a reformer and most definitely not a caste revivalist within the Hindu religion. His effort was in keeping with his philosophy of nonviolence and bringing societal transformation without creating animosity or hatred between groups.'
-'How Gandhi’s views on caste, race and God evolved through the years', The Federal
Although the term "Harijan" isn't popular today, I think that we should keep in mind that it would have seemed almost unbelievable to most Hindus (who believed in caste-based discrimination) during those days. To say that this group of people who were supposedy inferior and deserved little respect were "children of God" would have offended many people. Remember, not only was Mahatma Gandhi born in the 19th century in a normal Hindu household, he also had to deal with people who, no too long ago, had no issues with social evils such as child marriage. Progress can be slow, but as long as we aren't rigid, it isn't impossible.

Why secular congress made seperate Waqf board for muslims and given so much power that even they can claim any land and they are 3rd largest land owner in india. They have claimed so many hindus lands where ancient tempkes temples are present, they force hindus to convery into islam or they will claim their land. Why secular congress reformed hindus marriage act but left muslims from reform and to follow shariya law, why in a secular country there should be different laws? Why gov is funding madarsas? Why taxes only on hindu temples but not on mosque and churches? Why muslim appeasement in a secular country? Why after partition of india on the basis of religion we hindus still has to live with so many muslims? If we had to live together then what was the point of partition? Why congress didn't do full hindu & muslim population transfer between india and Pakistan ? If u ask these questions then leftist and so called intellectual will call u bhakts and they are the main reason for pushing hindus towards right. The sanghis have expanded to jordan peterson and his pseudo intellectual ilk and pride themselves for giving preference to facts over feelings. Yet when I straight up asked my sanghi friend, a devout of hybrid anti-woke peterson-ism and hindutva, that do you really believe there once was a half monkey and half man that could fly? At that moment, feelings took precedence, ironically and I was asked to keep faith out of this. Well.

Fantastic analysis, you've done a great job. Fascism is so repetitive I want to break my skull over a wall. I'm from Russia and the difference is just in names. Same ideas, same organisations, though tragectory of russian fascism is a bit different in a way that it at the same time settle itself as anti-fascist, so it adds extra mental gymntastics to be fasc, but to distance itself from german-italian aesthetics. They use eurasianism, less race and blood oriented, more imperial in a sense of a great russian nation taking lesser peoples under its kind and protective wing (with bombs and assassinations, of course). And, dispite a wartime, it still works more towards depolitisizing and pacifying people: what concerns me, even frightens, is how pro-political and proactive is Hindutva.
Man, this is grim. I hope - when there is no hope, hope is the only thing left - that the Hauge will miraclously rule against Israel. It might, but only by a little, tip the scales agaisnt rightwingers. The Pope made an interesting statement, the old man is based, in regards to a dialogue between marxists and catholics.

yeah the Russian reactionary/fascist optics seem a little more complicated on the surface, but I think it's internally consistent with fascism in the end; they can't not hypocritically claim to be dedicated anti-fascists when their "mythic past" (Soviet Union) was itself actually fundamentally antithetical to fascism and very anti-fascist, at one point anyway - and they can't not use the Soviet era as their mythic past because the sheer difference in quality of life, sovereignty and power as a nation then vs now in the post-Soviet world is just ridiculous
also, the anti-fascist branding was just too easy with regards to post 2014 Ukraine especially...

Voices like yours are truly needed especially in this tumultuous election year as well with the recent consecration of the Ram Mandir which has basically been reported on with no pushback from any mainstream Indian sources.

Greetings from Canada! Still working through your video, but I'm glad to have come across you, especially after having learned of the opening of a new Hindu temple that Modi attended.
Canada (not in all parts, but certainly in my region) has many international students and workers here from India, largely from Punjab (though I know a few people from Kerala as well!), so I've gotten to learn a bit about the Punjabi view on Indian politics.
It's been a great learning experience, but admittedly, I've heard more than a fair share of anti-Muslim rhetoric as well. Understandably, India is a complex political entity, and extremely diverse, which adds to some of that complexity.
I have found the rise of Hindu nationalism to be extremely troubling though. Muslims have had a difficult time in India to be sure, but so to have Sikhs, and I'm sure MANY other people. It's incredible to see a Leftist from India be able to talk about these issues, and criticize the Far-Right in India.
No country on Earth (not even Canada) is free of Far-Right and Fascist movements. It will take solidarity and unity among all peoples to fight back against it. I hope you keep doing this good work, and that more Indians come together to stand against nationalism, racism, and Fascism, in all its forms.

More specifically, he believed that Frankish Aristocracy were part of this group, and that the French peasantry were "racially inferior Gauls".
He was also big into this idea that Frankish people had roots in Iran (Persia) I believe, so he really tried to tie Orientalism into why he considered them to be so "superior".
It feels similar to what the N@zis were doing in Northern India.
Anyways, lots of interesting overlaps there, I appreciate the insight and perspective you bring to the subject of Fascism, and also the affects White Supremacy has had in India.

It's difficult for Americans to grasp the idea that race is a social construct, and specifically that "whiteness" and white supremacy don't really have all that much to do with skin color. I think this Indian perspective is a perfect eye opener on that front.

    • @nacpatil
      @nacpatil 8 місяців тому

Indian perspective is not comparable at all. The issue is religious and not racial. Regarding American society in a way failed to assimilate different races. Some drastic measures were required to make changes but they failed. That has resulted perpetuation of anger and victimization feeing in the minorities. Liberal politics is not about solving problem but rather making rabid documentaries about it! If that helps. And conservative politics is all about making bat shit conservatives think that their ww2 American exceptionalism can be brought back! It mostly has to do with colonization and forced westernization and the idea that there is a "race" at all. If people actually look at the word: race (the idea of race) and the suffix -ism (system, doctrine, ideology), it's simply just a system of race. Anyone who believes we are all different races, like we're different species, is racist. Scientifically, we are actually of one human race. Of course, when a person creates a race based system, they can also decide who is superior and who is inferior within that system based on a number of factors which could be religion, appearance, behavior, mannerisms, customs, culture, education structures, law systems, and more.

Great video! Agreed with all your points, however I do think the diatribe at 27:56 about how Tamil and Malayalam are "older" and "more nuanced" than Hindi is a bit unfounded - even if Hindi was "older" or "more nuanced" than other Indian languages, that wouldn't make it right for it to be imposed upon the nation. So I don't think we should be using the same rhetoric that colonialists do when wiping out indigenous languages en-masse (the idea that some languages are "not as old" or "not as smart/nuanced/complex" was used to justify wiping out many languages across the world) is the move.

Just came here to post this. There is no such thing as one language being "older" than another (except in the case of artificially constructed languages such as Esperanto or Klingon). It's just a matter of nomenclature and how you decide to periodize and label different phases of a language. I think this claim that Tamil and Malayalam are "older" is based on the antiquity of inscriptions, but no speaker of modern Tamil or Malayalam would be able to speak or understand the ancient languages to any large degree (as speakers of modern English would not be able to speak or understand Old English). At the same time speakers of Old Tamil and Old Malayalam were speaking their languages, the predecessor of Hindi (Indo-Aryan prakrits) was also being spoken in the north.

Its like how zionists like to gaslight critics by calling anti-semitism, which makes people with a heart uncomfortable. Thanks for this video. I am a Westerner ( from Argentina), with a deep interest in India and for a long time I've noticed the strong similarity between Hinduvta and Zionism. I would like to highlight something that you say at the beginning that seems fundamental to me and something that should be deepened. The cold, sometimes condescending and even aggressive attitude of the left with respect to religions and religious people ends up being fatal since that field is always captured by the political right. I am leftist and a very religious person, and although in Latin America this syncretism is more accepted since the Liberation Theology of the 70s, in the rest of the world religious people feel alienated in leftist spaces. The majority of the people in the world are religious and if the left does not change its attitude toward it, all those people will always feel more comfortable with the political right that is always willing to use religion to its advantage and manipulate the religious by supplying the lack of understanding of the left. With this I'm saying that the political right, like Hinduvta and Zionism or any fascist movement will always have the upper hand if the left does not abandon its old fashioned anti-religious prejudices.

    • @rohanxdavis
      @rohanxdavis  3 місяці тому +4

@@ingridjfyfjffjjh9217 it's definitely a worthwhile conversation. When I think religious, the first person who actually comes to my mind is my grandma who wouldn't hurt a fly and was a beautiful person. I don't think these fascists are religious, they're using it as a tool for political gain and power, in fact i can pretty much guarantee that I've spent more time reading texts they might consider sacred than many of them have. I have a mini copy of the Gita in my guitar case too. We are inherently spiritual creatures, seeking meaning in whatever we do, and even though I personally am not that religious in the traditional sense, I can understand that it is an important part of people's lives, that provides meaning and comfort in dark times and helps us cope with our realities. So I agree with you

The problem with Indian leftists are a good majority of them are Indian muslims larping as the Indian left and the other parts are Marxists and socialist elitists like the Gandhis who the common people of Indians do not identify with. Many Indians support the right over the hypocrisy of the left when it comes to hindu and other religions while appeasing conservative muslims with some very bigoted views. The socialists straight out carried a genocide against the Sikhs in the 80s so it's not just the Hindus they are against. You ask this youtuber what he means when he says "free Palestine" and he refuses to elaborate, I asked him if he supports the destruction of Israel and the Jews living there and he just replies back with "free Palestine" again in my chat to him. Not pretending to know much of or lived through Indian politics (solely via academia or family who lives or has lived in the country), but I recently came to write a poem on Hindutva, connected to the Gujurat riots and fascist parallels in Europe, of which I am actually familiar with on a daily base. Not even a state as small as Belgium is devoid of fascist upsurge, sadly, as we are approaching a new voting season under the grey cloud of Flemish, islamophobic and anti-migrant nationalism. Since I teach plenty of minority-group pupils at school, that hurts. Hey, yeah the Sikh community are great. They have a long history in BC too, some of the only Indian immigrants to be allowed to live in Canada initially were a small contingent of Sikh soldiers who were serving in the Colonial British army in the early 1900s. They set up trading communities there way back. There is a section of the Sikh community that harbour very understandable resentment towards the Indian government though because of a program that happened in 1984 during operation blue star. You should check out that history. The Prime minister at the time was quite authoritarian and allowed thousands of Sikh people to be massacred because they weren't falling in line. Other communities with ill-intent also joined in and carried out their own local pograms. That event is the root of alot of resentment from Canadian Sikhs, and is understandable. Many Sikhs who live in India still see themselves as Indian though, and prefer to hold that identity

The worst thing about all this is that I used to think that such narrow minded and archaic thinking was only spread amongst the so called, "WhatsApp Uncles", on the contrary, this ideology of hate is common currency amongst the youth of our country.
With Indian masses gaining easy access to the internet quite recently, it seems like BJP and the cult of Modi have successfully able to present Hindutva more or less as a politically charged version of Hinduism.
Young minds of our country can be seen actively flaunting with ideas like genocide of a minority community, labeling any form of genuine protest as an anti-national scheme. If one belong to a minority religion, there is very clear society pressure on them to show their love and patriotism towards the country.
Forget about being from a minority religion and try to criticize the ruling government's policies or actions, you would instantly be labelled as an anti-national, that's the level of public discourse our country has stooped to.
What saddens me even more is the failure of the opposition parties to provide the masses a legitimate alternative on a national stage. The ideological damage which has been done to our country's political landscape is something which is irreversible and has a potential to have long term ramifications.

Nicely summarised. In fact I kinda agree with the hindutva ideology but I DO NOT support harassment of minorities and people who do not agree with the government. Unfortunately the so called opposition parties are not any better as they are ready to compromise on national security if it means that they get power. No opposition leader from any other country would ask backstabbing hypocrites like the USA and UK who are known to undermine sovereignty of nations in the name of freedom and meddle in their internal politics. The opposition also has a history of doing muslim appeasement in the name of minority rights which is a violation of the fundamental right of equality irrespective of caste, creed and religion of the Indian constitution. While I do like the current government’s stance on the international stage there are many policies which I don’t like as well and hindutva is not one of them. Minorities have the right to practice their religion but they don’t have the right to disrespect the cultural identity of the nation or the nation itself.

I'm from Moldova, living in Canada and as someone from a country of the former USSR I follow what happens in Eastern Europe and Russia. A lot of what you described can be also seen in Russia with ideologues like Dugin and the much liked by Putin philosopher Ivan Ilyin who both mithologise the Russian Empire with its division of the population into Russian (by which they understand not just Russians but Ukrainians and Bielorussians who are denied an independent narional identity) and "inorodtsy" (of different descent/nation or of alien origin). They also revere the social structure of Tsarist times that was basically a rigid system of medieval estates. There is such irony that the new Russian upper class that appeared after the dismantling of the USSR is largely of low origin if they would trace their lineage to the Tsarist times and they are the ones glorifying this mythical past and demonizing the revolution whithout which they and their ancestors would probably never get out from their subservient status. Dugin in his writing also likes to alude to a hierarchy dominated by Kshatriyas and Brahmins certainly in an allusion to some white supremacist idea of Aryan superiority. He of course sees someone like Putin as a powerful Kshatriya leader and he would like to be the Brahman by his side, but the halls of power don't feel a big need in Dugin. They are capable themselves of elaborating their own right wing ideas.

Thank you for making this video! My family are from India and they were almost killed by Hindu extremists (they were Muslim). Luckily they were able to get to Pakistan, but Hindu extremism is something that’s not talked about enough (or understood) in the West.

During the partition most of the killings and violence occurred against Hindus and Sikhs in present day Pakistani Punjab by Muslim extremists, and I'm pretty sure Hindu extremism is talked enough in the west and always used as a justification to be racist against Indians also Pakistani diaspora use this to propagate hate and demonise Indians in the west while pak has a far serious problem of extremism

Holy Shit man, this is amazing work, must have taken ages to edit and put out this in a clear concise manner. I am going through so many books trying to find out what makes human beings worship ancient cultures and claim that their culture is best. when in fact we barely have anything in common with a person who lived thousands of years ago.

Incredibly well researched and informative video!
And shout out to F.D. Signifier who shared this video in a community post that sent me here. Very refreshing to hear about Hindutva and Modi from an Indian perspective, something that I feel is generally missing in US or western voices in general.

I don't know how you popped on my recommended list but i am thankfull for it. I am half indian and german, living in germany and i always felt i wanted to connect to india more. I was put off by what i now see as hindutva style thinking. Its good to have someone like you to explain things lile this to someone like me who feels very much like an outsider.

This is such a good video. I'm sure it took months to make but it couldn't be more well timed especially with the recent rise of right wing Hindus online after Modi inaugurated a new temple over land that used to have a mosque.

Yup! It took a while alright 😂 and funnily enough with being sucked into my day job I didn't even realize that I scheduled the video right before the inauguration. It was just coincidence!

This a great video. I hope it'll get more attention. Fascism is complicated and different for every culture, it hides and attaches itself to religions and other philosophies, and I wish we talked about it more.

Yup! I wish we talked about it more as well, so it doesn't leave people wondering how we got here. I suppose our societies have this tendency to imagine that fascism and racism are things of the past, and then it "blind sides us" even though the signs were always there
