Which Clans Fought at Bannockburn?

  • Edit*** Most Chisholms sources claim Sir John de Chesholme fought for Robert at the battle with the exception on Scotsclans which states "listing the supporters of England’s Edward I mentions Richard de Cheschelme and John de Cheshome." as stated the lannercost Chronicle states many families were of split loyalties this may be the case here.
Here is my attempt at correlating as much information on the families and clans that fought at Bannockburn and turning it into easy to read bitesize chunks, i realise there is alot of reading id recommended pausing i have placed all of it alphabetically to help you find the name you are looking for.

10:20 one my Ancestor, the Chief of the Great Clan Ross the Earl of Ross! Was Betrayed by the Whole of the Scottish People, when you allowed Ross-shire, the Earldom of Ross to stand alone and be sacked, and the Great Clan went from 10,000 fighting men to 2,000! And the Earl of Ross imprisoned in the Tower of London and the Earless Ross playing ball with the English to some extent, which in the End got Sorted Out to my Ancestors Son getting Princess Maud, with that Bloodline being Killed off by the Stuarts, the Stuarts who's 1st King Married a Countess Ross, which was my Ancestors Sister who became Euphemia Ross Queen of the Scots, who the Bloodline of the Stuart King settled on (she was his second wife), she divorced him, Married the Laird of the Isles, gave birth to the Lord of the Isles the Earl of Ross a title taken back from the Stuarts by Force, and made War on his Half Brother the King! But anyways if the Earl of Ross betrayed the King so bad, and that Whole Events not Understandable, than he never would of been 4th to put his Seal on the Declaration of Arbraoth! And the Maps you are using are wrong for the Time Period the Earldom of Ross was both Peninsulas in Easter Ross, all the way Past Wester Ross right into the Isle of Lewis, my Ancestor the War Master of Scotland, Husband to the Queen of Mann, the Chief of Clan Arias (Ross), the 1st Earl of Ross Fearchar, the Son of the Priest expanded the Earldom of Ross all the way to the Isle of Lewis and at the time period in Question the Earldom of Ross was much larger than the Ross portion of the Map you use, that's why we Waged War on the Stuarts after the Chief of the Great Clan Ross, the Earl of Ross Hugh Ross (1st to take on the Surname and no de or of is used after that just Ross which was just Ros, he added an S) died in the Crusades and the Stuart King took the Countess Ross from her Husband the Count of Moray, a Randolph (get it, Randy Ross), fair Chance it was Ross who was going to Rule! A claim so good the 1st Stuart King needed to steal his Second Wife from another man to concrete his claim to the Throne. You Pretend like Ross wasn't a pivotal part in all of this...

Just because I am getting a wee bit miffed at my clan being missed out in various historic presentations… the record does state we were at the battle of Bannockburn in fact… William Irvine was the armour bearer and aide to Robert the Bruce. The Irvines had been close allies of the Bruce during his wars with England. During one such time the Bruce made flight with a few aides, riding hard and exhaustingly. At one point they had to rest and the Bruce took sleep under a holly tree while William Irvine kept guard. From this story grows the Irvines of Drum Castle's coat of arms with the holly. At the Battle of Bannockburn (where the Scots won) in June 1314 William fought alongside the Bruce… we are not a footnote in possible participants! However love your work…

Though I’m married to a Donohoe (likely from County Cavan in north central Ireland), I have some Maxwell ancestry-my great grandmother, Alice Maxwell, whose family immigrated to Canada from Ireland in the mid-19th century. I know there were Maxwells in southwestern Scotland, and there has always been commerce between that part of Scotland and Northern Ireland. Wonderful to see the family crest in your notes, and to see Clan Maxwell represented at Bannockburn! 🙏🏼😉☘️

Surprised to find any mention of Goodfellow connected with the battle. A light horse unit would not be a surprise for our family on both my mother's side and my father's side. Mom's family (Hall) were 1st NJ Cavalry in the American Civil War and the US Cavalry after the war. Those ancestors had Reiver ancestors (also named Hall) who were kicked out of Scotland in the 1600s and sent to New Jersey about 150 years before our Revolution. On dad's side, many of my greats and grands on the Goodfellow side came to the US and built a church for John Wanamaker in Philly in 1870 and stayed. They ended up creating Goodfellow and Sons, a Scots-Irish construction company in Philly that existed until 1942. In the late 1880s and early 1900s they were known for moving huge girders through the streets of Philly using massive teams of horses.

Great video, my family clan like most who fought with King Robert after Bannockburn were given a parcel of land as token of loyalty to the Scottish Crown.
The land given to Clan Leask had previously been owned by a Scottish noble who fought for English and hence dispossessed and his estate parcelled out to those who were loyal to Bruce.
Leask is still found today just north of Aberdeen.

MacDonalds fought on both sides at Bannockburn as far as I can see. They then swamped allegiance some time later at Flodden.
When we get to Culloden although the majority fought with Prince Charlie. I had relatives again on both sides.
Macdonalds made up a decent percentage of the Government Highland regiment.
After this they moved to the US. Where members of my family fought on either side of the war for independence.
So I think I can say Macdonalds like to edge their bets.

We certainly lean more to our Scandic inheritence..the Normans were never part of our make up,but the 'victor 'records history?
We seem to vanish from records yet clearly were still here where we have always been ie;West of Scotland & Isles to the Ulster provinces.
Did we overstretch in our Mercenary business as Gallowglass?
Or did we rebel against too many 'Kingships' and were eventually left off the guest list of history as the awkward bastard 'Ginger 'child?

Symon Lockhart, it seems, served under James Douglas and was fiercely loyal to Robert Bruce. While on crusade in Moorish Spain, James carried the locket containing the cut out heart of Robert, and Symon bore the key. James was killed in battle. Sir Symon Lockhart then bore the key, locket with the Brave Heart, and the bones of James Douglas. Unable to reach Jerusalem, Symon and the other crusaders returned home to Scotland.

Like so many names of Ireland we do see either multiple origin points or similar names ending up in the same area but from different groups in Ireland for example, Hayes, Hughes ,hays, O'Hea, OhAodha,
According to Dr Tyrone Bowes the DNA evidence shows a Gaelic Origin of the Surname, considering the cluster groups around Munster especially within the boundries of the original kingdom of Thomond would suggest the orignal genealogie of the clan was correct, that of being a sept from Thomond, the most recent studies by people like Dr Maurice Gleeson have shown the Annal Genealogies for clans from the late 6th early 7th century onwards to be pretty accurate which reinforces the Thomond Gaelic link.

Missing- -Earl of Lennox (Malcolm 5th Earl-- Duncan MacGilchrist ie, MacFarlane clan, led by Chief Malduin. Appears on the Ragmans role as Duncan MacGilchrist of Lennox. The MacFarlane clan ( MacGilchrist) fought under the Earls of Lennox at Bannockburn and other battles. Pharlan (a younger brother of Maulduin) gave the clan the name MacPharlan-MacFarlane. The clan territory was the northwestern shores of Loch Lammond for 600 years. The Earl of Lennox was one of Bruce's staunchest allies in his rise to power, and assisted in his escape from the mainland to the isles after his defeat at Methven, (how was this overlooked ?)

MacGilchrist is mentioned on the Ragman Rolls at 4:30 on the video as well as the earls of Lennox being shown at 2:39 I have posted all the sources I used and for all the contemporary documents, The earliest records I found was from 1395 (66 years after Roberts death) and there are non for Parlan, that doesn't mean they were not granted anything but I do state many records are lost and I only used the ones I could find. This is a list of nearly 2000 names not all were mentioned outright but I gave everyone the tools to help locate thier ancestors such as the ragman rolls, I hope this helps, I will do a video on the Macfarlenes in the future.

In the list of commanders at Bannockburn you have made an omission, which I find surprising, if only for the fact that the family were rewarded by Bruce with the Hereditary Lord High Constable of Scotland position for their services at Bannockburn. I have an image from a book (I do not know the title) which shows 6 images of Coats of Arms under the sub title "King Robert's Commanders" First on this list is the Coat of Arms of Clan Hay, with the details as such - Sir Gilbert Hay, Lord High Constable, 4th Earl of Erroll. Gilbert Hay was a noble who led a group of nobles to rescue William Wallace from the field at Falkirk, so, reasonably noteworthy? Wallace was not rescued by an itinerant Irishman as Mel Gibson would have us believe, and please don't call him Australian, as Gibson was born in the US and never applied for and was never granted Australian citizenship (that bit about Gibson is just my personal gripe, the guy is a rube). The other Commanders listed are - Sir Robert Keith, Earl Marshall - Sir Walter Stewart, Lord High Steward - Sir Edward Bruce - Sir James Douglas and Thomas Randolph, Earl Moray. In one of the lists you have listed Gilbert de la Haye, this is one of the earlier renderings of the name Hay and reflect the Norman influence.
Nonetheless I really enjoyed the video, being of mixed Irish and Scots ancestry I seem to be watching a lot of your videos lately, they are all very good and informative, would just like to see the family name get more air time, so to speak😁.
