It’ll be interesting to see a progress update on the composter if you don’t mind Sandy. You’ll not be caught short by all the predicted shortages. Tastes totally different when you’ve grown your own too.

The only channel where leeks get stolen, gun powder can be made and composters appear from polystyrene. It’s as diverse as it gets which is why we love it 😉♥️👍😊
Haaha:) Just need some potasium nitrate (saltpeter) and some sulphur and then I can re enact the gunpowder plot and blow them up

The hot bin is something our local gardening group use, a big one 6x6x4 ft they all bring there
kitchen waste etc, they take off as much as a gallon of fluid at a time in the summer. they stopped putting meat and chicken waste into it because of a issue with rats.

All this bother about no salads , tomatoes in supermarkets etc,etc; I'm pretty sure we will all survive 😂
Pretty sure people back in the day either grew or bought "seasonal" plants to eat.
Is it just me (becoming an old gripe, just call me Mr Grumpy 😁) or is there a crazy reliance on supermarkets and a must have it now attitude.

We have become too dependant on the system Oscar. Supermarket food is also inferior
The co-op in old town is selling seed potatoes cheap 10 for £2.50 they have the best varieties rocket Maris piper and Charlotte. Also if you want fortify your bed or hot composter lotmead farm are still selling their spent strawberry coconut soir grow bags for 5p each a total steal, folks on my plot grew tomatoes straight of them last year
Wow 5p each, the only problem is my car is off the road at the moment, but I may cycle up to the Oldtown Coop and get some seed potatoes. Thats a good price. I shall be growing potatoes in 50 litre buckets this year

I don't know if you have heard of the Living Traditions channel but they are an American couple who are self sufficient on a farm, They are always talking about the best ways to grow and maintain a productive garden and they do really well every year. :)
Great innovation that composter. Can't get over the fact that some scrote nicked your leeks though! Bloody cheek of some people, and on Xmas Day too! Watching your cycling videos recently inspired me to buy a bike. I sold my old BTwin when I got the Himalayan, thinking cycling would be a thing of the past, but had to rethink that strategy, won a full suspension mountain bike off ebay for £30, happy days 🙂

I remember my father’s massive garden on the farm and in the Vilage I grew up in. He grew everything. We never bought any veg from a shop - always home grown and seasonal.
Thats the way it should be, the supermarkets are too artificial and the food is almost like plastic

That’s great Sandy. I’m in my 2nd year of having an allotment. I’ve had great success with root vegetables but anything more delicate not so. I lost a lot due to the extremely hot dry summer we had. I’m sorry you were a victim to someone pinching the leeks. All the best to Mandy, hope she’s better soon.

A nice video again and I hope Mandy is well again soon. I may try to make my own version of the hot bin on my allotment as I have plenty of perennial weeds which would be great to recycle rather than take to the tip or burn. I can relate to your frustration with having your allotment produce stolen as the same thing happened to me. I foolishly left my onions out to dry in the sun and the local kids used them as cricket balls in the local park.

That was interesting Sandy. I’ve got a wormery composter which produces lots of nice liquid fertiliser. It will be good to see how you get on with the hotbox. Thanks for showing us.

Interesting video. I do a bit no-dig gardening myself and get some great veg from it, most of the time... lol!
I might have a go at building a hot bin at some point as I built my current compost out of pallets and is 4 foot square! Maybe a bit over kill for my three one metre squared raised beds.

It seems to be working well Gaz, I hope you give it a try. Someone said it will fall apart but mine seems OK at the moment. I would however site it out of the wind maybe in a greenhouse and do your best to keep the area clean so no vermin like rats and mice will be attracted

It's a shame people have to take from allotments, I have friends that have given up allotments in chiseldon shrivenham and stratton because of theft, we have a small field which we shall be growing from this year just like my dad and grandfather did. All the best.
I think it was the same for a lot of country and village folk and even towns folk back a few years would keep a vegatable patch. I feel sorry for those who are trapped in "new builds" with tiny gardens

as an autumn / winter / spring composter, great idea to have it in your greenhouse, summertime, it can get very hot inside a greenhouse, and polystyrene hates extreme heat, so might be an idea to move it outside during the summer months
Loved this video on your veg growing and your interesting compost. We had an allotment in the 90s we had all our carrot tops cut off , WHY!! Sorry your wife is unwell I hope she recovers quickly. Thank you Sandy, looking forward to seeing how your compost and garden come on.

First time I have seen a composter like that, we have a couple of large plastic drums for ours that work well. Garden compost is cheap enough in the shops here also. Must get the garden sorted with new plants as the cyclone decimated quite a number of areas where the supermarkets get their produce from. Could be months or years before back to normal. Anyway great video bro. Safe travels
I tried that , it cost about £80 , but was very short lived because there is no inherent strength it simply bowed as the material congregated at the bottom. Could have shored it with plywood I suppose, but that was an expensive option, I bought a second hand hotbin for £100 in the end. They definitely are a game changer you,ll need waste from your neighbours to keep it going.
Sofar mine has been OK, if it falls to bits I will consider buying a proper hot bin or atleast strengthen this one up a bit
Well done. My greenhouse will reach temperatures of destroy the thermometer during the summer and fry anything growing in there, but this Hot Bin could be useful during the winter months. I've been practising No Dig gardening for a few years and it goes back way before your Charles whatever. I adopt the originator who was called Ruth Stout. The gardening in buckets is a great way to garden in a small space - I also subscribe to someone up North with a Geordie accent, forget his Channel name now, but he is well known for his bucket gardening. Save your Gardener's Urine for April Fools Day as no way am I going to try to translate that. I started out 3 videos back with your permission woods camp and followed the links back here.
Hi Robert, Thats right Ruth Stout was the person whome I believe started off Charles Dowding. Ruth used straw a lot as a mulch but that doesn't quite work in our climate as it attracted a lot of slugs but the principle is the same.
The hotbin is easily hitting 60 Centigrade even when the weather is below freezing. I reckon to get usable compost in around 60 days compared to two years that a cold bin will take

Yes it is disappointing when your crops get stolen off your allotment. Someone or some animal kepts taking my gooseberries from inside my fruit cage.

👍Thanks Sandy, very interesting, ive got some older type (pink) polystyrene insulation sheets laying about so i might have a go at knocking something up, possibly using plywood or tongue & groove for the outer casing to improve rigidity? like you im not keen on spending £300 odd quid or so if i can find other methods, in any case its more satisfying and fun to do stuff yourself as youve often shown ,hope the Mrs is better soon.
Very interesting mate, I have a common homemade compost bin but your one is a good idea so I'm going to try a similar one myself now ,I guess the heat is the key to the process. Thanks for the information.
They have to be loaded with the correct ratios otherwise can become anaerobic and smelly, but if done properly you can get compost in as little as 30 days and good liquid leachate plant food too

I would recommend a worm bin Sandy, we put all our kitchen waste in ours and it gives us lovely compost and worm tea is brilliant stuff, I got mine off free cycle, we are still eating veg from last years crops that we froze or dehydrated, we found radish freezes very well but it loses its colour when thawing.
Should be a lot better than my conventional plastic compost bin, which works in summer when it's warm but doesn't break down the waste in winter. Interestingly, I've seen a couple of UA-cam videos that advocate burying the material (garden/kitchen waste) 6 to 12 inches deep then planting crops on top. Might have to try this. Hope Mandy recovers quickly.
The bin is starting to build in temps Steve, now at 15C which is 10C warmer than average air temperature

Composting is really interesting, my bin is now starting to warm up, looked at it a few moments ago and is now running at 15C, outside air temp is only 2C

I think becoming a little more self reliant has to be the way forward for those who can, although my garden isn't large I have enough space to atleast grow probably quite a lot of what we will need. And it will be much better and tastier than the plastic food that comes out of supermarkets and I won't have to eat ze bugz

It's a cold easterly up here in Swindon this morning Bry, just got back from a dog walk and my fingers are frozen and there's an easterly breeze and no sign of Mr Solar face either.
Good on ya Sandy, a wise move getting your own little veg & salad patch underway mate, especially with latest new on certain food imports like cucumbers, tomatoes, etc having limits put on them in supper markets. And will undoubtedly save you some of your hard earnt cash mate.

I have grown tomatoes and veg in the past as was amazed at the super abundance I got at some times of the year, hearing lots of bad news about possible food rationing etc so becoming a little more self reliant is a good thing
Sandy have you come across Pendon museum (they have a UA-cam), a model railway museum that is modelled on Wanborough, Bishopstone,Ashbury. It would make a good ride out to it and as you have the above villages in your videos I thought you may find it interesting.

It's starting to work Ken, The hotbin is currently running at just over 30 Celcius with the amient air temps having been close to freezing most days
Sandy, Only just found this video when browsing your cycling content. I've just got an allotment after a long wait and will be adopting a no dig method for it next year so making lots of compost using rows of scavenged compost bins. Looks like a Dalek invasion (ha ha). On a large scale the hot bin method would be too expensive for me. Any chance that tall metal structure near your growing area is an amateur radio mast? Just wondering. Cheers. Stephen M0OMO.

As for no dig it hasn't worked so well for me, I found the ground became quite compacted and have since forked over the beds

FYI. Looks like 2 stone circles just to the east of Coate Wate. Just in case you’ve not come across these before
Hi Steve, I was aware of part of one stone circle at Coate which was discovered for what it was by local author Richard Jefferies but didn't know there was possibly two of them. I have never actually seen the stones but have cycled past them many times. There was also a large stone circle at Moredon North Swindon. The stones were discovered when they were building the road to Sparcells and they now line the road on two sides. If you go to What 3 words location ///tripled.signature.timing then put the little man down on the road you can look around and you'll see the stones. It must have been a very impressive stone circle
Why not just wrap loft insulation around a cone/plastic composter?
That will work too but it could also make a nice home for mice
@@WiltshireMan ahhh, good point. There's too many rats in the inner city for me to try that. I've been looking at using old discarded fridge/freezers because they're insulated, strong, have a lid. I've seen a few sources online where other people have done that.

I was only wondering the other day about your allotment. I've just taken on a new plot as we had trouble with break ins at the old one. Being charitable I'd think it was folks who were struggling but my head says they were just tw@ts sadly.
you hot bin you could encase in a wooden jacket to make it last a bit longer or try painting it with masonry paint that might help.
