    I've an opportunity to buy one of these machines from a non-sewer. Your video has made me feel confident to reconsider . I may go for it!
    This is undoubtably the best online video I have seen demonstrating the fine point of resurrecting a machine, any machine. Thank you for the fine instructions and commentary.

    Amazing instructions.
    I have a 7000, and your video helped me decide it will be too complicated to get it fixed. (I'm not that brave). My timing is out and doesn't pick up bobbin thread.
    I wasn't even sure parts were all there. I realised as you took yours apart, the little side cover (to insert cassettes) is missing plus all the screw covers.
    Previous owner has also unscrewed the needle plate Allen screws and clearly lost the nuts and 1 little washer.
    Also no cassettes or flat bed plate and no manual.
    But it didn't cost me anything, so no loss.
    THANKYOU, I still learned a lot.

      Glad you enjoyed the video. Shame about your machine
      It may be worth putting online for sale (ebay gumtree etc.) Just as a parts machine, they're getting rare now and even broken ones are fetching a bit, you might be able to give someone else's machine a new lease on life.
      Happy new year!

    Your video is fantastic - a pleasure to watch!!! I have this Diva 9000 Elna machine since 1992, it cost me £1500 in the UK, and it was an absolute state of the art piece of equipment in its glorious days. I made beautiful designer clothes with it!!! The last few years, well, many years, I neglected the machine and it has suffered dampness problems, which made some of its parts pretty rusty… it still switches on and changes the numbers for the stitches on the display, and probably would have been sewing perfectly well, but my main problem is the control pedal, I took it apart some years ago and lost the round plate inside it with the three clips, so now it does not activate the machine… when I switch the machine on - it shows different stitches on display, but when I connect the pedal - it goes into three interrupted lines, and nothing… of course, perhaps, there is a deeper problem rather than the pedal, but without it I cannot really check the machine out. In fact a few days ago I bought a Chinese replacement pedal online, it came today, but it definitely does not work with my machine)))

      Thanks! That's a shame about your machine. Have you tried looking on gumtree or Facebook marketplace or ebay? I see used pedals and other parts coming up quite often. Like you said their may be a bigger issue but at least then you'd know.
      Good luck!

      @@grannyflatgarage7599 Thank you for your thoughts!!! I have spent the whole day today rearranging the pedal, but still nothing… the machine switches on and I can change the settings for the stitches, but I cannot activate the needle moving, nor, for some reason, the wheel - I cannot turn the wheel manually at all. I am so sad…

      @yelera3082 I don't know how handy you are with electronics but, the plug is just a 3.5mm audio jack (like off a pair of earbud headphones )Ive just checked my pedal with a multimeter and I'm fairly sure that there's just a 10k ohm variable resistor between the outside two connections (the middle one appears unused)
      This at least should allow you to test the rest of the machine.

    • @grannyflatgarage7599
      @grannyflatgarage7599  3 місяці тому +1

      @@yelera3082 Hmm sounds like the pedal might not be the issue. If you can't turn the crank by hand then I would definitely suspect that the crank is seized.
      My suggestion for the next steps would be:
      Try turning the machine on in test mode (hold x and memory whilst turning it on) like in the video and test the stepper motors.
      Test the bobbin winder function.
      Take the rear panel off, loosen the main motor and remove the drive belt, then test again with the pedal to see if the motor spins.
      If all of the above works then the circuitry is probably OK and the crank would be the only issue. A decent repair centre may be able to sort it out.
      Hope this helps.

    Remember my late Mamy laying out big money for both this model, and the previous 7000 incarnation. At the time Elna was considered the absolute top tier of household machines, and then it all went kerplunk and they were bought up by Janome. I'd guess the transformation of sewing machines from heavy castings to die castings and plastic, with added early computerised fluff pushed them out of the game ? Probably also the case that the machine repair guys of the time had a hard time making the transition. Interesting machines with a lot of extra functions for the time that no doubt wow'ed potential customers, but got less use than imagined. However, top video mate 👍

    What a wonderful video! And how lucky for you to have found this machine and to have the skills to repair it. I have the exact same machine, and rarely used its fabulous capabilities. A few years ago it was dropped, the tension was all damaged, I had it repaired but it was never the same. Recently I took it out to give it another go. I can see that the pressure foot is not coming down to a position that properly grips the fabric. It feels like the mechanism is controlled by a column of air... like an air pressure system. When I use the lever to lower the foot, the pressure foot does not go all the way down. Then I need to use my hand to push it down further to make contact with the fabric. Despite all this, the fabric is not fed properly and I need to pull the fabric as I stitch. I hope there is a quick fix, and that you might be able to guide me.

    • @grannyflatgarage7599

      Hi, it sounds like part of the presser foot mechanism may have broken similar to mine in the video, it's quite a flimsy part made from some sort of plastic as I showed it is repairable though. Unfortunately I can't really tell you too much else without having a look. You can buy second hand head-blocks as replacements which might be another option if that is the problem.
      Best of luck

      @@grannyflatgarage7599 Thank you so much for your prompt reply! I've gone back and listened to section 22:20 about the take up lever. I am not as brave as you (nor do I have the skills that you have) so I am trying to avoid removing the front panel of the machine. However, I did remove the back but there isn't enough access to determine if the problem I have is exactly the same as the one you had. At position 22:42 of your video there is a metal bar slider that is controlled by the lever. The control feels like a spring mechanism. What's happening in my case is that the lowest position of the lever does not coincide with the lowest position of the slider. When I lower the presser foot lever, the presser foot does not go all the way to the bottom. Perhaps I need to remove the whole presser foot mechanism? I really appreciate any suggestion you can give me. Thank you so much!!

    • @grannyflatgarage7599
      @grannyflatgarage7599  5 місяців тому

      It definitely sounds like the "ears" have broken on the shaft that the presser foot lever attaches to, at least partially. That is, it sounds like you have exactly the same problem I did.
      If you take the front shell off (only a few screws) you should be able to see easily if that is the issue.
      Unfortunately that was probably the least DIY friendly repair in the video, however a repair shop may be able to assist if you know that's the problem.
      Sorry there doesn't appear to be a quick fix.
      Good luck!

    I purchase this Elna 9000 new($2500 Can) when they first came out in 1999.Absolutely amazing for her high level of sewing and design.
    A few years later it was taken in for routine service where it was purchased.It came back and never functioned since.Taken to another Elna repair and supposedly fixed.No never could adjust tension after that.Machine has been a door stop ever since.Seems to be doing what the one you posted.Although it runs great it has that tension problem she has never been able to resolve.Since I also bought her the 7000 Serger it still works well.
    Always wish I could find someone reliable to correct the tension issue but so far failed.Wish you were close by so you could tackle this problem.

    Wow!! I think I just watched the smartest person in the world. I am glad you showed that bobbin winder assembly. My machine is the 8000; from the outside, it looks the same. Sometimes this one just does not want to engage and spin even tho the machine does recognize the bobbin winder is engaged . Usually rebooting a few times works. I purchased it for $100 U.S. That seems to be the only issue so far. I love the Buttonhole feature on this machine. I personally do not like the modern ones with that foot they all have. They are nice but I always start them in the wrong place. With this machine not a issue at all.

    Finally a really detailed service video. Loved it. My Elna 7000 started sewing in reverse after all these years and it was serviced last year for routine cleaning. Sent it out for repair and it came back as unrepairable due to self regulator not working. Does the machine have such a part or function? Thinking of opening my machine up after watching your great video. I love my 7000 and if its not repairable I may even buy an old one.

      Thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm not particularly familiar with the 7000. Without seeing it I can't give you too much info but I assume the stitch regulator is an electronic component on the main board. On the 9000 at least most of the chips are still available as new parts so if you found an old computer or TV technician they may be able to fix it.
      Definitely give it a crack!

    • @grannyflatgarage7599
      @grannyflatgarage7599  Рік тому

      No problems, glad you enjoyed it. The easiest 2 things to do are:
      1. Give the hook (bobbin holder) and surrounds a good clean - a build up of lint and thread (through normal use) can cause issues with bobbin pickup.
      2. Swap to a brand new needle - a slightly bent one (you might not even be able to see the bend) can cause it to miss the thread pickup point.
      If this doesn't work it could be a timing issue. I would recommend having a look at the service manual for your machine - www.ifixit.com/Document/PArl4jlNvNWgbK5F/ELNA_6000_service_manual.pdf?referrer=wiki:209846

      @@grannyflatgarage7599 It seems that when the rotating mechanism in the bobbin spins around (anticlockwise), at the point where it 'picks up' the thread from the bobbin, the thread (s) seems to get jammed between the bobbin area moulding and the case moulding. I have never seen this kind of thing working before (I've just been pulled into this!), so unfortunately I don't have a mental reference as to how it should normally work, but it does seem to look wrong that the threads are becoming stuck like this. I've tried to find as many videos on YT as I can that show what happens, and things do seem the same on our machine, up to the point where the top thread picks up the bobbin thread. @@grannyflatgarage7599 great thanks - I've just uploaded some video at: ua-cam.com/video/fJgkLgV2sYQ/v-deo.html In this video I've progressed a little bit by removing the external casing, and it's possible to see now that the thread is becoming caught against what appears in the video as a small bent metal piece of the machine. The grey thread is brought around from left to right and reaches this piece at approx the 24 second mark. This is where the thread appears to become caught. I haven't ever touched this area of the machine in terms of disassembly or adjustment, and it appears to be unbroken, so I'm wondering if there is simply something I'm doing wrong? @@johnlacey155 Hi John. Couple of things.
      The black piece that the bobbin sits in, that the top thread is wrapping around is easily removable. It's part of standard home maintenance to regularly remove it and clear out lint from the bottom and sides. It can be a little tricky to get in/out but once you get the hang of it it's easy enough. Have a look in the manual (it's online if you don't have a copy)
      Secondly (and probably the main issue) is you're using the wrong bobbin, this machine takes the clear plastic bobbins, the one you have in is for a vertical rotary hook machine.
      You can buy a pack of 5 Elna branded bobbins from Spotlight for a few bucks.
      Try those things and let me know how you go.
