Very, very cool Mustang mod!!! I bought a 2008 Made-In-Japan Mustang '63 Reissue and am upgrading the pickups to Curtis Novak pickups and new lollypop Hipshot tuners. I am still waiting for parts, and am very excited to hear what it will sound like!
This sounds Amazing!! Cool build!!! Love the warm tone and the mids that I'm hearing :) Wanted to ask -- do you think this is in part because of the 250k pots (and not 500k)?
Does the Guild BS-1 pickup in itself compress the sound when you play harder? That's what happens on my thunderbird pickups (epiphone). I find it quite pleasing for them to compress instead of getting aggressive, nasty sounds when playing a standard P/split coil pickup (the string is not touching the magnet :-)).
Great advice on building an instrument. I've attempted to paint a bass before and in that process I learned what a total PITA it can be if you want the finished product to look professional, I'm more than happy to just pay a luthier to do things like that these days.
That is a beautiful bass you made. I wonder if you are still playing it? If you did it over again, would you use a noiseless pickup like a Serek lazen-b90 or a thunderbird, in the bridge position?
I’m curious, Monsieur Zolli. Among the 40 instruments you’ve owned and played, was one of them a Fender (or Squier) Bass Six? I ask, because I’ve got the Squier Vintage Modified Bass Six. I like it, even though I think the pick ups could be wound a little tighter so they had the same output as those in my other models. That being said, I could imagine trying to get my hands on a model not unlike the modded Mustang you demonstrated here. It might be narrow-minded of me, but I have enough issue playing a bass that only has 20 frets; this one only has 19.
sorry for the delay ! It's the neck pickup. But you got to be careful if you do the same mod with a serek b90, you got to solder it with the white wire connected to the ground
Hi Xavier, that’s a superb modification job you did to the JMJ Mustang. I’m Inspired to try something similar. However my big question is what are those big green triangle picks you’re using and have on the pickguard? Ps: love your wife’s artwork 😊
Hey Christoph, yup all standar size. Neck BS 1 and 18mm space Serek B90. No custom order. I've tried to do my best for the magnet to be under the strings. The E and G string are not really in the center of the magnets but it works fine
@@christophroither8206 on this video, the strigs are Savarez strings (french brand) that played a lot actually ! I've changed them and I'm back to Ernie Ball Flatwound. They're brighter than a lot of flatwound. I guess I'll change D'addario flatwound when they'll be too old and I'll have my news basses from Phi Guitars
@@xavierzolli2946 thanks a lot. What do you think about your serek bass comparing to your mustang? i really want a bass with 32 scale.. but really hard to find.
@@christophroither8206 actually I've just sold my serek. Not that it wasn't a good bass but, the Mustang like that is very cool and I got a stronger emotional bond to it. Plus I'll have 2 new basses to come by Phi Guitars made according to a lot of personal features and details, so many other reasons to not use the serek anymore. I've never tried 32". Even for the new basses to come I've chosen 30" because it can fit into some guitar gig bag and believe me, when you often take planes, they're less of a pain in the ass with guitare size gig bag than bass gig bag !
Awesome video, subscribed! If I may ask, why did you decide to put a guild pickup instead of another b-90? Just curious about the decision and why you made it, thanks!
Hey, thanks !!! I would have been happy to have 2 B90 but living in France, with the price of the pickup, taxes, custom fees, it's way too much. I've chosen the cheapest option :)
Man, this is amazing. One question that comes to mind is do you not also find the bisonic pickup to be noisy? I've got a stock Starfire II (the re-issue) and the hum is similarly hard to predict.
hey, thanks ! No I never had any problem with the BS-1. I've played last Wednesday and I had a lot of hum with the b90 I've played almost the whole show with the bs1
why spend almost $1000 or more as its worth today on a bass to modify? This could've easily been done with a Squier. Not like it really makes a difference since you painted over the Fender name on the headstock. Cool mods, but they definitely lower the bass's resale value and seems like a waste of money to me. Especially since it's nothing like the original. You'd figure spending that much money on a higher quality mexican fender or introductory American, you'd make the investment on something you are happy with out of the box
So it was a process that has been on for months. I didn't buy this bass thinking that it would become like that. I just wanted a good shortscale bass. Then it became that 🤣. I know that I can't sell it anymore, and I think I'll never do it. I've lost so much money on gear (pickups, pedals, amp, strings) just to try. If there was a commercial move behind that, I'd be a terrible business man. Here it's just for fun. I've just modified a good bass to an amazing bass 😉. Of course you can do it to a Squier or whatever, may work as well. But ok I've spent maybe more money that I should have for this bass and I can't sell it anymore. But go to a bass builder that works well, but that ain't that famous. You'll spend 3000$ on a handmade instrument that sounds great... but when you want to sell it, you'll just hope to let it go for 1500$. It happened to me more than once 😬
I wouldn't bet the kitchen he would lose a lot of money if he sold it. Maybe he would even break even. The problem in the music buisness is most of them are broke if they are real make a living musicians. A lot are wasting cash on dope and other crap that doesn't help achieve their goals in the least. Just ask me how I know . But as they say in the car biz there is a butt for every seat so every now and then someone comes along ghat loves what you have done and how it sounds. That person is usually willing to pay for it so you never know. I've built a couple of guitars and made money on them . The Joey is they look and play good . They have to be set up right so even if there is a flaw in the finish it doesn't matter so much because it plays great.
People worry way too much about re sale value and see those as "investments" when buying Instruments but forget the purpose of the instrument nr.1, to use it for music. People are so afraid of use of guitars and dings that they buy now dinged up instruments for premium prices (paradox real used ones get still overlooked because of minor dings). The market is so oversaturated and they will anyways not that desireable in x years than now the "legendary era" guitars. When I buy, it's something I really thought over it, scratched the cash together, if it fits and when I have it, I use it and if I find after a while something that works in it better, I swap it out to make it fit for different purposes *and use it even more* . Main reason for a instrument in that price range would be build quality, correct specs, the paint type, quality of fret material, wood types (I love Rosewood, Maple and Ebony but can't stand Pau Ferro or Indian Laurel often due to poor selection and feel) or especially neck shapes (Squier necks are often different from Fenders especially on the shoulders of the neck😂) I have for example an Fender AO Jazzmaster in White, got it "used" but was never used before..only with a tiny mark from the guitar stand where the paint reacted for around 1.1k before the big price hike (release was around 1.6k and later up to 2k Euros). I love the neck since its way chunkier than Fenders C or Thin C, added a Mastery Trem and Bridge (got both for the price of one), added a real celluloid guard, it had for a while an humbucker with split switch in the bridge, a set of telecaster pickups for a friends project, now an WRHB in the bridge and the stock neck pickup and when it needs someday a re fret it gets medium jumbo instead of the original small tall frets. Its a well cared instrument and is besides a few others (which some got similar treatment) on almost all my gigs/projects with me and to rely on.
This guy's wife understands guy-humor. She's an absolute keeper, bro.
Great pickstyle playing bro, you really nail that bobby vega vibe
Beautiful bass! Top notch work and Incredible sound.
still love this Basses sound. that blend switch/config is genius for those pick ups. Your English is awesome.

yeah !! Let me know when it's done, I love those kind of mods !
This sounds Amazing!! Cool build!!! Love the warm tone and the mids that I'm hearing :) Wanted to ask -- do you think this is in part because of the 250k pots (and not 500k)?
Hey thanks very much. I've tried on other basses with 500k and I think for single coils on bass, 250k are a really match !

Ive similarly considered modding my JMJ but nothing quite this extreme. 😅
If you have the old original pickups, i would be interested in buying them for my vintera!

This sounds great man ! Nice job
I may get these pickups for my bronco I have been playing with
The diagram has a mistake: the wire that connects the tone pot to the volume pot must go from the middle lug of the tone pot
ah ! thanks ! I should check
Very cool video would love more
Great video, thanks for sharing. What was the band you mentioned at the beginning of the video?
the name of the band is De Staat. They're really good !!!!
Hi Xavier, regarding the Bisonic pickup, did you use the neck or bridge model? Merci!
sorry for the delay ! It's the neck pickup. But you got to be careful if you do the same mod with a serek b90, you got to solder it with the white wire connected to the ground

Do you sell this one? Or am I thinking about the white Serek?
Géniale la video !
