Defend The Grab Using Pak Tsuen - Wing Chun

  • Welcome to our channel! I'm Keith Mazza, also known as Sifu Keith, and in today's video, we’re focusing on a critical concept in Wing Chun: defending against grabs. This week’s key message is simple yet powerful-Don’t get grabbed. Whether it’s a two-hand grab, a single-hand grab, or any other type of hold, we’ll be training how to avoid getting trapped and how to regain control with effective techniques.
    Key Training Concepts Covered in This Video:
    1. The Core Drill: Pak Sao, Chun Sao, Lap Sao, Punch, Punch
    This drill is fundamental in Wing Chun as it teaches you how to respond to grabs and strikes. We’ll work through the drill:
    Pak Sao (slapping hand),
    Chun Sao (forward hand),
    Lap Sao (pulling hand),
    Punch, Punch (follow-up strikes).
    The goal of this sequence is to prepare you for both punches and grabs. Whenever someone tries to grab you, use this series of movements to deflect, control, and counterattack.
    2. Don’t Get Grabbed: The Essential Mindset
    The first step in avoiding grabs is movement. As your opponent tries to grab, you must always move off the line. Step off to the side to break their line of attack and immediately counter with a Pak Sao and Chun Sao.
    If your opponent applies pressure, you apply equal pressure back. This is a key principle in Wing Chun that’s referred to as the Khin Kits or "little pearls of wisdom". The idea is that when pressure is applied to you, you should always return that pressure, forcing your opponent to back off.
    3. Variations of the Drill
    There are several ways to work this drill:
    Pak Sao, Chun Sao, Punch, Punch: This is the basic version of the drill that can be applied whether your opponent throws a punch or goes for a grab.
    High, High: Another variation of the drill where you perform a high Pak Sao and a high Chun Sao, setting yourself up for follow-up strikes.
    Elbow Strikes: You can also substitute the second punch with an elbow strike to add more control and force.
    4. Different Footwork Options
    To avoid being grabbed, you need to be able to move efficiently. In this video, we focus on the following footwork:
    Sidestep: Step off to the side to evade and counter.
    Release Step: Step back and reset.
    T-Step: A more defensive maneuver that allows you to pivot and shift your body weight to avoid attacks.
    These footwork patterns are interchangeable, and it’s important to get comfortable with each one to respond fluidly in any situation.
    Training to Improve Speed and Reflexes
    Practice these drills regularly, paying attention to your footwork and hand placement. When you get comfortable with the movements, you can increase speed and intensity to simulate a more realistic combat environment.

    What would help the reputation of WC as a viable fighting system in the eyes of the international fighting community is to also show the application of these techniques against an opponent full speed realistically attacking the demonstrator, rather than a limp opponent just standing there allowing chain-strikes. I’ve trained in WC over 30 years and find it frustrating that a lot of people think it is mostly useless in a real fight. You and I both know this is nonsense, as we can see that even in MMA fighters use certain WC principles even though they don’t call it WC - such as straight punches or kicks without ‘winding up’, intercepting a strike while striking, elbow strikes etc. It is unfortunate that the vast majority of videos do not show the skilled application of WC in full-effort sparring. If you demonstrate techniques like in this video, adding a short bit with it at full speed against a full on attack would boost peoples confidence 🤘🏻

      Hello sifu.
      I believe as Wingchun artists we are forgetting a very important offensive technique..
      Kicking. Period. Wingchun kicking.
      What park sau chun sau low instep kick to stop his movement. punch
      We tend to forget as Wingchun artists that we have legs.
      It's the Greatest advantage any martial artist has that is greatly overlooked and also rarely trained.

      @@TheAntoine9891 Very Good point i will be opening my kicking training soon. I know a lot of people just don't like to train their legs
