Defend The Arm Grab Using Lao Sao Pak Sao Punch - Wing Chun
Welcome to our channel! I’m Keith Mazza, also known as Sifu Keith, and today we’re diving into an important technique for defending the arm grab. This video will focus on a core skill in Wing Chun-how to respond effectively when someone grabs your arm.
What You’ll Learn in This Video
1. Defending Against the Arm Grab
In this video, we focus on how to defend when someone attempts to grab your arm, a common situation in both self-defense and combat. By using the Lao Sao (circle hand) and Pak Sao (slapping hand), we create space and control the opponent’s movements, while also setting up for an immediate counterattack.
2. Basic Drills
Lao Sao, Pak Sao, Punch: We begin with a drill where we perform the Lao Sao, then follow up with the Pak Sao and punch. This drill helps you practice breaking free from an arm grab while immediately transitioning into a counter punch.
Step-by-Step Breakdown:
Lao Sao: The first motion involves using the Lao Sao to deflect the opponent’s grab.
Pak Sao: Follow up with a Pak Sao to slap their hand away, creating the opportunity to strike.
Punch: Immediately strike with a punch to keep the pressure on your opponent.
These movements are designed to be practiced slowly at first to develop fluidity, and then you can increase speed as your technique improves.
3. Pressure Application
As your opponent tries to grab your arm, you’ll be applying pressure to stop them from succeeding. The key here is not to let them grab your hand-you must always stay one step ahead.
The drill encourages you to move around the opponent, using the check and punch to control their movements. This helps you maintain balance and assertiveness in a combat situation.
4. Real-World Application
Real-World Self-Defense: Knowing how to counter an arm grab with Lao Sao, Pak Sao, and a quick punch can be the difference between getting controlled and maintaining your freedom of movement. The ability to quickly counter and strike when someone grabs you is a key aspect of Wing Chun training and its practical application in self-defense scenarios.

Why is wing chun better than krav maga?
First off there is no such thing as a superior Martial Arts style, it comes down the level of skill & dedication of the practicioner and quality of teaching of the instructor. Secondly Krav Maga was never a Martial Art that is a modern change to fill people's pockets. When I'm Lichtenfeld created Krav Maga is was a 2 week course designed to quickly teach people how to contend with real violence in the quickest and most direct manner possible. A Martial Art takes years to learn not 2 weeks.
@ A lot of wing chin ppl trained for ip chun can’t fight lol
Could you show all types of kicks Wing Chun has?
breaking down the steps and building up to the subsequent moves is a great learning tool, good video.
Thank You

Love the hoodies
Thank you.
Best around!!! Yes, km bias he's my Sifu!!!
I miss Wing Chun so much. I studied under Sifu Keith from 2005 - 2009 and unfortunately had to leave because I lost my job when the economy tanked and moved completely out of the state. If you are in the area, I encourage you to go sign up and study under him. I wish I still could. I'm glad to see that the school is still doing well and Sifu Keith is still rockin it.
Always fire 🔥
Thank you Sifu

Query about bill jee, what is the last movement when bowing down then circling both arms out before raising the torso back up to double punch and close the form? I’ve never seen any video or commentary on that movements significance, or if it’s even used in combat applications! Please share your wisdom on this? Thank you.😳🤦🏻♂️🙄/👌✌️🤲☝️🤔
Thank you for your videos. Can you briefly explain how this builds power? Thank You
Thank you for your Question This is isometric training for your tendons very mush similar to weight lifting by keeping the muscles and the tendons under pressure and the number of repetitions.
what is the purpose of this?? thanks
To teach you how to take a fall. This is very useful if you are being thrown from or a grappling technique or you lose you balance while walking or running. One should safely learn how to fall without injuring oneself
Amazing thanks so much!😊

Excellent channel, clear video. Thank you for teaching us.
you are very welcome thank you
Ok sifu, I understand the theory, however there is a problem. I bet that if you ask your students about this, more than 80% are going to say that these two lines are the same and if there is a difference, more than 90% are not going to be able to explain the difference. I won't blame them but whoever came up in the Win Chun system with the nouns for these two different geometric figures. The first one is correct, center line, but the second one is not a line, should not be called central line and is far from been one for everybody that know simple geometry. When the center line cut our body from head to the floor, it divides the body into areas, gates or planes and not lines. So, would be correct to say, we could block on the center line, but we could also block on the left upper gate, right upper gate, right middle or whatever the case may be, but never on the central line since there is none. The central line do not exist at all. Instead of gate we may use plane as well. But never, never, central line. That is a serious problem and that is why students don't understand this ambiguous and confusing Win Chun theory. This is wrong. I'm not a sifu, but you are, maybe you could start a movement to change the terminology and bring everybody to the same page, light and understanding. It is sad that even some Win Chun masters, when talking about a punch on the central line, they are like looking for a line where to punch. They don't know that that punch could land anywhere in any of the gates but not on the center line. Sorry, that took me too long to explain myself, but somebody must correct this wrong terminology in Win Chun for the sake of the students, maybe you're the one. Thanks sifu.
Thank You we can certainly try
Thank you for this. Can you please post the second exercise.
Nice! 👍🏾
Neck grab leads to back take
Is this modified wing Chun like WSL’s or traditional WC?
This is Traditional Wing chun
What kind of kung fu is this..? never seen any of this from Ip Man.
This is from William Cheung's lineage
Traditional Wing Chun Kung Fu
Too many moves. Not practical .
Not Too many moves just another way to apply something in a given situation just remember 2 is on and one is none
Nice nice! Thanks 🙏🏾 Sifu
yeaaaaa wing chun doesn't work lol
Look, man… it works, it just takes a lot of time and your body has to be deeply conditioned or else it’s at best 30% effective. Just like boxing.
@@ch0wned lol
It doesn't work for you because you lack understanding. The rest of us it works for.
Great Stuff!
thank you.
totally unuseful, you have a lot of better techniques, in wing chun, for stop a lower punch.
See don't confuse your skill level with mine this technique works great i have used it in multiple situations. But if you will please upload a video of you doing something so that we all may learn.
@@sifukeith-wingchun the problem of these days, is that everybody explain a technique, and say, hey it works, if i throw you a lower punch, with all my force, you don’t stop it with a low bong sao, but if you think you can stop it , perfect, thats your imagination
@@Mixmartialarts-2024 No its not my imagination i have used this technique both in and outside the ring and it works just fine you might be taking for granted that i am standing there and not moving my feet to dissipate your force but it works just fine 3747 Church Rd Mount Laurel N.J 08054 stop by anytime and we can test it out thanks for your candor tough and have a nice day.
@@sifukeith-wingchun do you think, i’m going to spend 2000€, to travel to your country to prove that you are wrong? Is your ego not mine. Sifu whatever you are
