I love hearing how other people's Strahd campaigns went. It's like peering into another reality where a different bunch of weirdos have to deal with ol' biteyfangs (we insulted Strahd behind his back a LOT during our playthrough, and YES, he was well aware of it).
We had a pretty eclectic bunch. In the beginning, our party was set up like this: •Groth: an Orc Cleric of Grummsh, who enjoys a good fight and a good drink. (survived until the end, and actually played a key role in melting Strahd with sunlight) •Ser Redmund: A Human Paladin from the sword coast, who originated from a campaign I ran, but Strahd-based meddling took any levels he had beforehand. Has a strong belief in oaths and justice. (also survived until the end, and practically became Sergei's living avatar) Mateo Galan: A Human Rogue, originating from the Assassin's Creed universe (it's Ravenloft, these things happen). A serious, straight talking person who was part of a decimated clan of vistani, and has been given a task to slay Strahd. (unfortunately died at the hands of a crazed revenant, alongside my 1st character, who we'll get to last) •Thariel: A Human Draconic Sorcerer who was extremely shy at first, having secluded herself at the top of a mountain after scaring a nobleman with her fire powers, but grew to become a bit of a pyromaniac as Tiamat's influence started to grab hold. (also unfortunately died, this time during Lady Wachter's party, in her devil room) And lastly: •Kepesk Mirik (my character): A Lizardfolk Fighter, who loves to cook and is an expecting father (more on that later). During the burial of Kolyan (burgomaster of the Village of Barovia), his falchion started to whisper to him, and boom, now he's also a Warlock. Soon, the blade starts to drive him a bit mad. (Died by the same revenants that killed Mateo. Quickly found out that the source of the blade's power was Strahd himself, using the blade as a medium to grab Kepesk's soul) And by the end, we had 3 new characters replacing the lost ones: •Maraketh: A Dusk Elf Witcher(Ranger), who joined the party to assist Kashmir in the journey to the amber temple. Very gruff, very serious. Became a vampire at one point, eventually becoming a high vampire upon returning to Rivia, where he was brought as a child to initially escape Strahd. Constanza Ramos: A Human Rogue, who, while not an assassin, was associated with the brotherhood. Joined us to help finish Mateo's mission, them being long-time friends. Actually hailed from Skyrim (there's a lot of multiversal shenanigans that happened before and after this adventure wound down). Stayed behind after Strahd's defeat to train a new set of vampire hunters, ready for Strahd's return. And Finally: •Vyth Kepesk (my character): A Lizardfolk Fighter, and one of the children of Kepesk Mirik (time also worked differently between the material plane and Ravenloft). Born with innate magical ability, he nonetheless took up the blade, and his skill eventually lead to him becoming an eldritch knight in service to a trade prince of Port Nyanzaru. Initially left his tribe to find his father alongside one of his sister's, and found him dead, his regular bookishness got pushed aside, replaced with a thirst for VENGEANCE. After Strahd's defeat, he found a shit-ton of gold under Castle Ravenloft, split it with Ismarck and returned to Nyanzaru to set up his own successful trading company.
I haven't played Strahd before but it sounds crazy fun. As Puffin Forest keeps narrating, I am reminded of The Rat Prince from Dungeon Dude's Drakenheim campaign. With so much to do in this world, I could see how one could have an absolutely unique experience from one odd choice (such as staying out with the werewolf brother that first night which ends up killing Irena)
Our campaign started to leave the rails when we decided to both complete the sacrifice *and* kill the monster in the basement of the Death House. It fully left the rails when we managed to talk the Watcher Boys into stealing the Book of Strahd as "prank" on Fiona, then when Fiona's forces confronted the Burgomaster's the next morning we managed to assassinate them both in the battle. Consequently Ismark (Ireena's brother) stepped up as the new Burgomaster of Vallaki and is doing a good job of rooting out the demon cults. Now it's careening through the sky of (e.g.) Mad Mary running a new orphanage in Old Bonegrinder with a village being built around it, in the area that we have thoroughly hallowed. The first thing that Babba Lysaga knew of us was when our Gloomstalker/Battlemaster bugbear squeezed through her window in the middle of the night and did 206HP of damage in one round, then tanked her Power Word Stun and Finger of Death. She never even managed to light her evil candle or put on the luckstone, and died screaming at us not to touch SvZ's crib, which I firebolted because I assumed it was helping him somehow. We're mostly nocturnal and all have darkvision, so we attack places at night and until now I never knew what daytime Berez looked like. We slaughtered the werewolves when the attacked us on the road recently, never even learning their names.
That alchemist fire nuke is exactly what killed esmerelda in the curse of strahd campaign I played. We were fighting the hags, and one hag cast fireball on esmerelda which also hit the cart and obliterated her, then in the next turn the hag one-shot my character - a level 7 lizardfolk monk - with a level 7 finger of death. Eventually the party did manage to defeat the hags, but I lost that character since I was resurrected by the hag against my party, and we lost esmerelda and her great spellset. Ironically, we found the cart long before finding esmerelda, and I managed to steal it without seeing or triggering the trap, and we then used it until we found her - when she wanted it back - obviously.
My wizzard character tried trying to open the door, triggering the lightning and then that exploded the cart. Not sure if that was intended. Might have made if I had used all the abilities from half-ling divination wizzard with lucky feat... Fun campaign, Esmeralda inside the cart and Ireena outside dead.
Now if you wanna use that trap in a funny way. Bring it to the hags, convince them its a pastry cart and get them out to look at it. Then cast fireball while they are around it. Nothing is left but a crater. But lets be totally honest, Strahd is fun to play when your a full evil party and side with Strahd. That brings things so far off the rails the DM just has to homebrew the whole thing.
Kind of interesting, i'm currently playing a Warlock of Dendar, a Yaun-ti who views her as his mother and between the two their is a genuine love (at least with my character towards Dendar, who was nurturing enough) His entire arc is to find a way to bring Dendar to the material in order to grow his mom's power to consume the false gods.
I played a yuan-ti Lawful Good Paladin of Dendar. The entire thing was on the premise that none of the myths about Dendar wanting to consume the material plane were anything besides conjecture while the only real facts are that Dendar eats nightmares and protects the material realms from Abominations trying to slip in. Therefore I was always upholding the love and protection that Dendar held for the mortal realm...while also being permissive of slavery, kings, and caste systems having been born a yuan-ti. Sometimes the greater good requires children to be made into dream pastries.
Better than a dad that gives you the ability to win fights by giving the bully a bloody lip or something while they beat you into hamburger... and that ability is not granted by words or magic or family values. The ability to take a beating is only fun in fiction, the way to get it sucks... and involves lots of patricidal fantasies.
I love how this type of “animation” really let’s you imagine how everything looks while being spoon fed the audio. it make a unique experience for everyone that listens.
An interesting thing to note that I rarely see played out in D&D, Patrons can't actually remove any powers they give to their warlocks and warlocks don't have to be the same alignment as their patrons. Thus, a warlock could have a backstory where they tricked a patron to basically steal their abilities.
Irena's okay right? She doesn't deserve this mess. Also, for an evil character Boshak is pretty congenial. I like how layered all these characters are.
Prime rule of writing a villeins is that no one see themselves as actually evil (beside ironically a good people). Even flamboyantly evil characters usually mask they true goals. And of course that doesn't mean that they need to be secretly good, same as evil characters absolutely can be on good side as "evil" isn't singular force (well in D&D it sort of is, not the point).
@@theblazingcrusader6322 I'm not saying otherwise. I'm actually glad that they remove direct connection between forces and aliment. Though it was hilarious when my Paladin try kill worshipers of Lawful Good deity for immoral behavior ;D
Evil is a really deceptive word. Immoral is a better descriptor of Boshak's character. And just because someone ignores the publicly accepted morals, doesn't mean they can't have their own set of morals to follow, perhaps some code of conduct.

@@johnnysizemore5797 The absolute quickest, most simple one I could find to get my Mother and Aunt acquainted with the game: "Lost Mine of Phandelver". I guess I'm learning as well because I've mostly played 3/3.5 edition except for a few 5e games with a hobby store group when I lived in Washington.
Can I just say, I appreciate your Strahd voice. I mean it could've just been generic "bleeeh" vampire, but something about it comes across very dignified. (edited, because I'm a big dumb who doesn't proof read.)
Gouda blasts herself 3 times with wild magic fireball. Me: "Holy crap, what do the dice have against her?!" Ben: "Gouda plays a wildfire sorcerer in another campaign." Me: "Ah, that explains it."
Funnily enough about werewolves, they're immune to falls in 5e because falling does bludgeoning damage. In 4e, 3.5e, and Pathfinder, they would still take fall damage because it was untyped, not bludgeoning damage. Also, in 3.5e and Pathfinder werewolves have damage resistance to non-silver weapons, not immunity. So werewolves could still hurt each other.
No, Tomb of Annihilation specify that Lycanthropes are NOT immune to falling damage. Sage advice also clarifies this: www.sageadvice.eu/2014/11/04/about-lycanthropy/ www.sageadvice.eu/2016/12/20/would-a-werewolf-take-bludgeoning-damage-from-falling/
Our group in a 5e campaign managed to kill a werebear by pushing him off a balcony and over a cliff. Later that day we found the human version impaled on a tree.
@@scytheseven9173 More generally, back in 3.5 there was an occasionally-overlooked rule: the natural weapons of a creature with some form of damage resistance (such as silver or cold iron) counted as such to overcome the DR of other creatures - so werewolves could hurt each other with their claws and bite, demon claws worked on other demons, and so on. In some cases this extended because there was some overlap; devils were also weak to silver, so werewolves and devils would be able to hurt each other with their claws, at least until there were some other types of DR involved. I do not know if that remains in 5e or not; I'll have to go looking for it.
Garou: Just because they're wearing robes and standing around a pentagram chanting in an underground room and have a secret society doesn't mean they're a cult. Boshack: I hear they're trying to spread peace and love Garou: OH GOD THEY'RE A CULT
Funny story about the "runes" at Van Richten's tower. My first time playing CoS, I was playing a fairly shenanigan-ey character. When we got there, our wizard and paladin were seriously trying to figure it out, trying to understand what they might mean, discussing how they might use their combined knowledgeand spells to decipher it. Meanwhile, I was staring at it intently. Just staring. Have you seen Gravity Falls? I hadn't yet at the time, but you know that episode where Mabel uses her powers of nonsense to follow a trail of clues to Trembley. Yeah. . . So while our two smartest party members were engaged in an intense, scholarly discussion, I suddenly swung my arms out, then swung them again, and again, in some kind of weird interpretive dance. They took notice and asked what the hell I thought I was doing, when suddenly I stopped and the door clicked open. The best part is, I roleplayed that entire thing. Literally, while the party sat around the table trying to figure it out, I stood up and did the dance. The DM said nothing all the while, and while everyone else was telling me to take it seriously, I finished and the DM said "the door opens" and gave me an inspiration point. I was like "what? There's no way it was *that* easy. . . " Moments like that are why I love D&D.

7:17-8:15 is golden, excerpt: "All the other magic parents gave them other magical gifts." "Are all the other magic parents a single mother taking care of multiple kids and working two jobs and eating all nightmares and trying to annihilate all of existence?"
My players avoided the tower for some reason they never quite conveyed to me, and by the time they decided to go there they were done with Amber Temple. I decided that while they were up in the mountains, the Brides attacked Von Ricten and Esmeralda at the tower (whom they had become aware of due to players blabbing about it) and the Brides triggered the trap. They left Rictavio for dead, buried in the rubble (he wasn't dead, the characters dug him up), and kidnapped Esmeralda to become a new bride on Strahd's orders. This was after one of the PCs rejected Strahd's romantic advances, and one of the ways he was going to get back at them for that plus his suspicion they had something to do with Rahadin's disappearance (the players killed him and buried the body under the floor of the head elf on the Vistani village by Vallaki).

My goodness, you are an excellent story teller, this is a wonderful video series and I am going to keep watching. Thank you.
I love every one of your videos and am really thankful for your content. During the last episodes (and in this one too) I noticed, that you put in a lot less pictures. I found your animations really supported the content perfectly and would love for you to include more of them in the upcoming videos (I do realize the increased workload, but this would REALLY improve the stories). Greetings from germany
I thought the most infamous effect of wild magic was a 700ft bubble of permanent dead magic. Especially when accidentally cast during karaoke, releasing a Turask
My favorite series by you so far. Had a lot of good laughs and chills so far. Serious thought though: as dark as the adventure is, I really think that Strahd still holds up as a villain. He's the classic Vampire and shows why the cape and darkness - guy still can work.
50 seconds in and I laughed so hard because (possible spoilers) . . . . . . it sounds like someone finally kinda gets it. I've long held the belief that the only way strahd ever breaks the curse is for him to learn to let shite go. The "dark powers" created this realm as a prison (and barovia is not the only "prison" they control); which I've always taken as the "Lords" are placed in control of a domain which is designed to torment them until they "mend their ways" (except lord soth, whom even strahd feared and was released because he was beyond their ability to torment). So the events in the the campaign play out over and over and over again, sure there are little changes and a couple ways it can go, but eventually the story concludes, the stage resets and it begins all over again. I think in order to end the curse strahd would have to realize what a dick he is, accept that he can't have her, allow people to leave and probably even end his own life. I think he would have to do all of that (of his own free will) to prove that he can: let go of his obsession for her, his need to control everything and his fear of dying, to end the curse; but he's a selfish whiney brat so that'll never happen.
Same with the other Dreadlords. If they were the kind of person who could recognize and correct their own mistakes and sins, they never would have become Dreadlords in the first place...
21:32 it's a pattern of body positions. There was a puzzle similar to this in Quest for Glory 5:Dragon Fire (more of a memory puzzle) but this is how I would write out the caricatures because they were easily interchangeable
This series is fantastic, the characters are so compelling and your narration is so on point that, personally, I haven’t needed continuous animation to keep my attention. I look forward to more content of this style in the future, and even more so to the next ep. in this series.

In the beginning, our party was set up like this:
•Groth: an Orc Cleric of Grummsh, who enjoys a good fight and a good drink. (survived until the end, and actually played a key role in melting Strahd with sunlight)
•Ser Redmund: A Human Paladin from the sword coast, who originated from a campaign I ran, but Strahd-based meddling took any levels he had beforehand. Has a strong belief in oaths and justice. (also survived until the end, and practically became Sergei's living avatar)
Mateo Galan: A Human Rogue, originating from the Assassin's Creed universe (it's Ravenloft, these things happen). A serious, straight talking person who was part of a decimated clan of vistani, and has been given a task to slay Strahd. (unfortunately died at the hands of a crazed revenant, alongside my 1st character, who we'll get to last)
•Thariel: A Human Draconic Sorcerer who was extremely shy at first, having secluded herself at the top of a mountain after scaring a nobleman with her fire powers, but grew to become a bit of a pyromaniac as Tiamat's influence started to grab hold. (also unfortunately died, this time during Lady Wachter's party, in her devil room)
And lastly:
•Kepesk Mirik (my character): A Lizardfolk Fighter, who loves to cook and is an expecting father (more on that later). During the burial of Kolyan (burgomaster of the Village of Barovia), his falchion started to whisper to him, and boom, now he's also a Warlock. Soon, the blade starts to drive him a bit mad. (Died by the same revenants that killed Mateo. Quickly found out that the source of the blade's power was Strahd himself, using the blade as a medium to grab Kepesk's soul)
And by the end, we had 3 new characters replacing the lost ones:
•Maraketh: A Dusk Elf Witcher(Ranger), who joined the party to assist Kashmir in the journey to the amber temple.
And Finally:
•Vyth Kepesk (my character): A Lizardfolk Fighter, and one of the children of Kepesk Mirik (time also worked differently between the material plane and Ravenloft).

Only that dendar would be powerful enough to kill every single being that inhabits the material plane
Alirion Sovrin pretty sure any of the major primordials would be able to
Yah that’s kinda the point of the elder evils.
They are all so, so ded.
"I don't get to hear that from real dad..."
nOOOO NO WHY IT HURTS AAAAAH-
"I guess magic dad is just like......real dad...."
Dont worry, magic-dad just went for cigarettes
When Boshask held his arm up and Said "MORE POWER" I heard "MOM POWER" and I love that
"you have eldritch blast at home"
Aww Gouda you cinnamon roll 5:06 😟"I guess magic dad is kinda alot like real dad"
Would she not be a... crunchy roll
Why?
@@CharismaAt-1 Oh wait, Because of her anime magical girl outfit.
I love Garo so much, the characters are so immersive
"I guess magic dad is like...real dad"
I now want to give gouda a hug
Awww that wholesome meeting with your preternatural parents that have an unholy magical hold on your immortal soul *sniff sniff* brings back memories
I love how this type of “animation” really let’s you imagine how everything looks while being spoon fed the audio. it make a unique experience for everyone that listens.
Let me guess:
_Someone made a mistake down the line and is or will soon regret it?_
So gouda has a death tyrant as a magical sugar daddy? Huh
*chaos tyrant
I think
Melons Away nope. It’s A Death Tyrant... Definitely.
So she is acting being , good but her power come from chaos
Seems more like an actual dad
@@TheRezro even in dnd doesn't have it all black and white
@@theblazingcrusader6322 I'm not saying otherwise. I'm actually glad that they remove direct connection between forces and aliment. Though it was hilarious when my Paladin try kill worshipers of Lawful Good deity for immoral behavior ;D
Evil is a really deceptive word. Immoral is a better descriptor of Boshak's character. And just because someone ignores the publicly accepted morals, doesn't mean they can't have their own set of morals to follow, perhaps some code of conduct.
I love the triple explosion wild magic combined with the cart full of explosives. Megumin would be pleased.
And those characters in this quest being animated and having to do the MACARENA in order to get through that door.
Would be awesome and hilarious.
Yea puffin get on that
Whoever plays your warlock is the best person to play dnd with. He makes this campaign for me.
"You have Eldrich blast at home." Perfection.
I loved that convo between boshak and his mom
Edit:"i heard they're trying to spread peace and love"
"OH GOD IT IS A CULT" oh yes the cleric and paladin are apart of a cult
Yay! Part 6! I'm gonna DM this campaign with my Mom Aunt and Cousin once we finish the one were on. Were all quarantined and bored so I finally convinced them to play lol.
@Michael Athens-- what you currently running 'em on?
@@johnnysizemore5797 The absolute quickest, most simple one I could find to get my Mother and Aunt acquainted with the game: "Lost Mine of Phandelver".
I guess I'm learning as well because I've mostly played 3/3.5 edition except for a few 5e games with a hobby store group when I lived in Washington.

Can I just say, I appreciate your Strahd voice. I mean it could've just been generic "bleeeh" vampire, but something about it comes across very dignified. (edited, because I'm a big dumb who doesn't proof read.)
Favorite series so far hope they'll be another one.
Gouda blasts herself 3 times with wild magic fireball.
Me: "Holy crap, what do the dice have against her?!"
Ben: "Gouda plays a wildfire sorcerer in another campaign."
Me: "Ah, that explains it."
love your work Puff, you truly wear the Strongpants
"We could just kill him and make him accept the dark powers."
Sage advice also clarifies this: www.sageadvice.eu/2014/11/04/about-lycanthropy/
www.sageadvice.eu/2016/12/20/would-a-werewolf-take-bludgeoning-damage-from-falling/
@@BobTheArchmage Ah, I see (though werewolves being naturally unable to hurt eachother without tossing eachother off cliffs is still silly).
I love pathfinder
No one:
Me every episode: BoShack LizardMan
Garo get your shit off the floor!
I literally just finished a session of D&D! Then I come back to this! Can't wait!
“I guess that magic dad is a lot like real dad”
"How does everyone know where we are?!"
The Paladin's existence. :D
That is the cutest Dendar I've ever seen.
I like how the warlock is in denial of their first victory.
As soon as I saw the runes I was like, "Aren't these the dance moves to Mr. Robotto?"
Garou: Just because they're wearing robes and standing around a pentagram chanting in an underground room and have a secret society doesn't mean they're a cult.
Boshack: I hear they're trying to spread peace and love
Garou: OH GOD THEY'RE A CULT
The interaction with Dendar is the best I've ever heard 😂😂
Strahd: "Why doesn't she LOVE ME?! I'M A *NICE GUY*"
There's no way it was *that* easy. . . "
Moments like that are why I love D&D.
Just when I try to head to bed 😂😂

Well I see 1 upside and 1 downside to this
Upside: We get to see Puffinforest with constant uploads and fun videos
Downside: I CANT RUN THIS BECAUSE U ARE COVERING EVERYTHING SO WELL!!!
Do your players watch Puffin? If not, this series is just a great source of inspiration!
Yes half of my players watch this series which is fun to talk about, but then they know what to do
7:17-8:15 is golden, excerpt: "All the other magic parents gave them other magical gifts."
"Are all the other magic parents a single mother taking care of multiple kids and working two jobs and eating all nightmares and trying to annihilate all of existence?"
That door puzzle was amazing when my group played through it
We actually solved it first try though

I freaking love gouda, her character sounds like fun person.

I want to toss her down a well
Her Wild Magic hasn't had enough of an impact yet. I was really hoping that she'd accidentally turn into a plant or cast fireball on herself. But puns are PUNderfill if you hit the PUNch lin correctly. So overall I think Gouda is my favorite character.
HNIC
She seems to keep a decent balance between "uwu so random~" and "okay, time to be a hero." I think she'd be fun to play with.
Hey Mom, can we get magic Christmas?
Mom: We have magic Christmas at home

Ben has a well practiced voice. The journal reading for Strahd is so damn immersive
Man, I am having a blast listening to these! Having played Curse of Strahd, this is great seeing other people had a rough time here and there. Especially that godamn windmill...
Can we appreciate that awesome “crazy laugh” at 5:03?
Boshack and Gouda are MVP!!
Also Fiona, so very enterprising!! Good for her!
Not to mention, given her situation, and generally how things go for people in Barovia, it's understandable actually... weird, paradoxical at times, but understandable
To quote Giles, "Well, I'm not dead or unconscious, so I say bravo for me."
I love how often you post these and they are my favorite thing to watch on UA-cam, Netflix, and crunchyroll. Keep up the amazing work!
I love how their all just like children with their patrons
Thank you for the best memories I have been watching you since jr. year of hight school. Keep up the good work man.
WOOHOO!!! Keep it coming Ben! Thanks so much for keeping this going.
What is the name of the track that starts playing near 32:50 when Rahadin shows up?
Previd thoughts they blow up the cart
Yes I called it to be fair tho are party blew it up too but fortunately we didn’t summon the dragon
Also you missed the perfect for Stan velsing cameo when garo almost died
I started watching this series on the recommendation of my son who is very interested in this particular series. I am old and this is really not a subject that interests me (I am fascinated by my son's own d and d stories) but this is a campaign he really wants to play so I started to watch. My goodness, you are an excellent story teller, this is a wonderful video series and I am going to keep watching. Thank you.

I just want to comment to tell you how much I appreciate your work. I also appreciate the light touch with ads.
The night serpent looks unbelievably adorable.
Puffin, love your videos got me into D&D and now a DM for my group.
"Heh Guess, people will call him that." best line to side step that conversation!!!
i also loved when Boshask said "Mom, your the worst!"
He's the classic Vampire and shows why the cape and darkness - guy still can work.

it sounds like someone finally kinda gets it.
Now I want to see an oath of redemption paladin that has the goal of reforming Straud and ending the curse that way.
Same with the other Dreadlords. If they were the kind of person who could recognize and correct their own mistakes and sins, they never would have become Dreadlords in the first place...
Too bad there's no spell of introspection.
21:32 it's a pattern of body positions. There was a puzzle similar to this in Quest for Glory 5:Dragon Fire (more of a memory puzzle) but this is how I would write out the caricatures because they were easily interchangeable
It's 7am and my parents are coming i should really sleep

I do love this story. It reminds me of when I first played 'Curse of Strahd' (30ish) years ago (Yea I'm old). Thank you for bring a smile to me with your stories and voices.
Just recently I was playing a wild magic sorcerer and towards the end of a surprisingly easy fight I accidentally cast fireball on myself, we were playing at level three, so the fireball instantly killed me and made everyone within range almost dead.
