China didn't conquer Korea because they have them as a vassal and if you declare war on your vassal, you end up on -3 stability. It would take so much administrative mana to get your stability back up.

Not a vassal. The relationship is more of nominal tributary relationship. Korea was entirely independent and kept a mostly amicable relationship through diplomacy.

hello. As a Korean history major, I would like to point out one major error in this video: it portrays Korea's tribute to China as if it was for the benefit of China, when in fact it was the other way around.
To understand this, you need to understand two things: first, China has always had more than 10~15 times the population of Korea, so the economic benefits of exploiting Korea were largely meaningless to them. Second, and most importantly, the misconception is that tribute in East Asia is of a different, religious nature than in other parts of the world.
This misconception is widespread, even in modern East Asia, because Western civilization has replaced East Asian traditions.
To understand the relationship, it's important to understand Confucius' thought. Confucius saw the chaos of the Warring States period as fundamentally caused by the breakdown of state order, and advocated the restoration of family order as a solution.
In other words, state order can be restored in the same way as family order. This boils down to fathers fulfilling their roles - providing for their families, educating their children, etc. - and, conversely, children respecting their father's authority and being responsible for the livelihood of their elderly parents.
Confucius applied this relationship to the state order, with monarchs corresponding to fathers and subjects to children. The same logic applies precisely to foreign relations.
The ancient Chinese saw the world in three levels: first, China, the only civilized country in the world. Around this, they envisioned barbarian nations that were somewhat civilized, if not as civilized as China. These were called outer vassal or fence states because they were friendly to China (which translates to tributary states in English).
Then there are the uncivilized barbarian nations that have been largely untouched by China, who are considered the enemies of civilized China (usually the Mongols and Tungus).
Confucius perceived these barbarians as basically like children: he believed that, like children, they could be civilized by providing them with proper education, and from this, world peace could be achieved.
Just as it is not right to use violence against a child, it was the basic idea of Chinese intellectuals that in foreign relations, civilization should be pursued through "education" rather than violence.
So, just as you would reward a child for good behavior and punish them for bad behavior, if they learned Confucianism well, they would be recognized as "civilized barbarians" through a process whereby they would be granted tribute and the king of that country would be formally appointed as a vassal of the Chinese emperor (this is what a fence state is).
Herein lies the peculiarity: China rewarded the tribute-giving country with goods, on average, three to five times the value of the tribute.
However, if they were badly behaved, they would reduce the amount of tribute they were allowed (and receive fewer bounties), and if they were seriously bad, they would not be allowed tribute (the Ningbo incident, where Japan was stripped of its tribute rights by China, is an example of this).
Or worse, if you dethroned the king by force without just cause, you had a cause for war(Koguryeo-sui war).
This doesn't make sense at first glance, because outside of East Asia, tribute is a form of taxation, a payment from the conqueror to the conquered.
But if you think of it in terms of family relationships, it's very easy to understand: a child gives his father a portion of what he earns, and if the father is a strong and capable man, he will reward him with many times that amount.
This is the basic understanding of the tribute relationship.

    • @한준-h6y
      @한준-h6y 3 дні тому +264

So ancient China took this morality to the extreme, really more than you might think. The video makes it sound as if tribute slaves were a common practice, but in reality, there are no instances of the ancient Chinese empire demanding human tribute from foreign countries, such as women or slaves. Rather, China rejected a female slave sent from ancient Korea.
The reason for this slave tribute is the Mongols, who completely ignore the system. The later Ming Dynasty was also influenced by Mongol culture, and required slaves in the early years of its existence, but quickly abandoned it.
The relationship between the two countries was highlighted by Japan's invasion of Korea, where China provided enough rice to feed every Korean during the war. It also built roads and provided large amounts of silver coins to South Korea in response to criticism that rice was difficult to transport.
After the war ended, a permanent subsidy of 60,000 liang of silver was given annually to rebuild Korea's shattered military and economic strength. Other occasional grants of silver were also made, but due to exploitation by China's middle bureaucracy, Korea actually received less than this.

    • @한준-h6y
      @한준-h6y 3 дні тому +237

Finally, the video lumps all these different countries together and reduces them to modern China, which simplifies it to modern China vs. modern Korea, but that's not really the case, because countries like the Yao Dynasty, the Golden Dynasty, and the Qing Dynasty were countries of groups that were ethnically, linguistically, and culturally distinct from the Han Chinese, the mainstream ethnic group in China. They were, to put it mildly, in the third tier.
So there are actually a lot more different dynamics, and it would be misleading to not describe them.

Chinese always say that Korea was part of China but not once they controlled whole peninsula. Only northenrn part which also was very momentarily during han dynasty. It was China that always was conquered and was slaved by nothern nomadic tribes. And in traditional Chinese perspective those dynasties of nomads were not considered Chinese history but ofc ccp came to power and they are now not only saying all of them are Chinese but also Korean dynasties are their regional history. And obviously most Chinese believe whatever CCP want them to believe like the good slaves they are.

I believe that Goguryeo history is a part of the history of Manchuria, as the Goguryeo had controlled the port city of Dalian, and the vast region of south Manchuria. Hence, the claim actually had a fact in it, and is not only due to your argument for indoctrination of the PRC. Furthermore, there was a period where the Chinese did rule over the Northern region of Korea, near Pyeongyang. It was a very long time ago and the regime is called the Wiman Joseon, perhaps you could search it up.
I did also notice your condescending tone at last, which perhaps does not help anyone in China realize their situation, but rather provokes them and leads to them stopping to listen to the things you are saying.

It would be interesting if you cover the Imjin war and Admiral Lee Sun Shin. Admiral Lee Sun Shin is regarded by many to be the god of naval warfare. Even the English did not refuse to put him on the same pedestal as Admiral Nelson. What the English disregarded however, was that Admiral Nelson had full support from his country. Admiral Lee quite single handedly saved his country without the support of the government, sometimes the officials even conspiring against him. Not only did he win all battles against great odds, he earned the respect of the Japanese who were his enemies, as well as the Ming who considered the Korean army as their inferior. Some criticize the revisionist history, but such records of Admiral Lee can also be found from the Japanese and Chinese records.

Also one thing to note in that region near Northern China was always an area of tension between Han Chinese, Jurchen/Manchu, Mongols/Khitan, and Koreans. Accepting tribute from Korea and having an "ally" instead of forcing control more often than not was the right choice to balance the tensions there, so any Dynasty there would be better off keeping a native ruling class there instead of have direct administration. Tribute was good for both too. Chinese dynasties would have prestige and save face and Korean rulers would have legitimacy and access to the sweet Chinese markets.

The closest analogy I can come up with Korea being a tributary of China is how the Holy Roman Empire was considered the successor of Rome in Western Europe and the protector of Roman Catholic Christianity. Other Catholic monarchs won't call themselves an emperor to respect their authority, and when the HRE said it must retake Jerusalem all those monarchs at least pretended to listen. A relation similar to that was how Korea treated the Ming and the Qing Dynasties. During the Yuan Dynasty, on the other hand, it was more like how Burgundy or Bohemia was to the HRE: a vassal whose sovereignty was handed over to Karakorum, but in posession of significant power as a Mongolian equivalent of a Prince-elector.

Historically, some common enemy had always existed between Korea and Han China. Manchuria had been an independent area where many nomads arose and fell. In the ancient era, the Korean kingdoms of of Goguryeo and Balhae sided with the nomads to balance against China. However, in Goryeo/Song era, the nomads such as Göktürks, Khitans, Jürchens, and Mongolians, started to form independent nations. Both Goryeo and Song were forced into a total war against these nomads for more than a couple hundred years and even vassalized by the last enemy of Mongolia. Learning from this history, Joseon had had enough motivation to side with China to balance against these independent nomad nations.

In this treaty - it's essentially the root why korea was so weak and japan became a modern colonialist power - being that china prevented korea from industrializing from 1882 to 1894 - then japan saved them.

the swift self-modernization quickly concluded after the Japanese triumph over the Russians in 1905, during which Japan converted Korea into a semi-colony and eventually fully conquering them. This was the only instance when Korea had been entirely conquered ( the closest and only instance being 80 years of being a mongol vassal NOT CONQUERED, BUT A VASSAL), and compared to all Eastern European nations with their centuries of vassalage and colonization in the medieval and modern periods, Korea's experience lasted only 35 years.
which is - at the very least - equally as shameful as many of the european nations and even colonialist countries being conquered by their foreign neighbors - the list includes norway, finland, colonialists such as Sweden during the Kalmar Union, Portugal during the Iberian Union, Spanish and Austrian territories in netherlands and belgium, Norman French rule in England, and so on - ( Europe/West eurasia was a deeply darwinistic dog eat dog world - a product of being a deeply logical, analytic, and rational subregion of eurasia, Compared that with East eurasia - the polar opposite - a historical deeply peaceful and irrational, empirically emotional, homogenous and authoritarian subregion of eurasia. However, West eurasia triumphed by initiating the age of exploration, Darwinist colonialism, and industrial revolution - the product being a globalized world which was shown during the two "world wars")
Also, Korea is geographically part of northern asia, like the russian far east and the ainuic islands of sakhalin, kurils, and hokkaido. Calling china and japan part of north east asia would be like calling north africa and turkey part of europe - because more than 50 percent of china and japan are as south as the middle east and north africa - we must go off western european geographical standards. lol, According to ancient Korean historical records, Koreans (Joseon Dynasty) literally regarded and declared themself as Little China (Sojunghwa) or "Remains of Chinese Civilization" when the Ming dynasty collapsed and was replaced by the barbarian Manchu Qing dynasty...The Korean culture, the Korean language, the Korean names...were heavily Chinese-based and Chinese inlfunced. Korea only abandoned Chinese characters in the modern time 20th century. And today, Koreans can't know the meaning of their names without Chinese characters to clarify it. Thus Koreans have to use Chinese characters beside Korean writing on Korean IDs...

Historically Koreans and han-Chinese had always been the allies fighting against northern invaders together, until the Chinese government began to claim these invaders were also “Chinese.” Suddenly the Koreans became the enemies and the conquered inferior people. Koreans are like “bruh…” That’s a such huge backstabbing move.
Another thing the video is missing is that the tributary system in east Asian worked differently than the western one. Culturally, recognizing Chinese emperor’s heavenly mandate seemed as a beautiful thing. The relationship between the emperors and the kings is more of brotherly and parent-children one. Financially, Koreans made money by making so called tributary trips. The Chinese emperors returned more gifts in return, with a few exceptions of Mongols, early Jin and Liao which actually took stuff from the Koreans, but they were arguably non-Chinese dynasties.
One can argue that over the last 2000 years, the Koreans and Han-Chinese people only fought 4 major wars. The Han empire, the Wei dynasty, the red turban rebels, and the communist China.

The north of the Great Wall is not Chinese territory. It was dominated by Mongolians and Manchurians,Koreans.Qin Shi Huang built the Great Wall to prevent the so-called Northern Orangkae. After that, China was conquered by the KimDynasty and Mongolia established by descendants of Kim Ham-bo of the Silla Dynasty, and the Qing Dynasty was conquered by the Manchurians and ruled for 300 years.
Manchurian Wonryugo (滿考洲源), compiled during the Qing Dynasty's Qianlongje, also identified the origin of the founder of the Kim Dynasty as Silla, and the national name of the Kim Dynasty also revealed that his founder's surname originated from the surname Kim of the King of Silla.
The Gojoseon civilization was 1,500 years ahead of the Yellow River civilization in China
"The Gojoseon civilization, which emerged 5,000 years ago, was the third ancient civilization in the world to be formed after the Mesopotamian civilization (5500 years ago) and the Egyptian civilization (5100 years ago). It comprehensively summarizes the origins and birth of Gojoseon civilization, socio-economic foundations and cultural characteristics, and the foundation, development, and dismantlement of ancient countries
About 12,000 years ago, when the Ice Age ended, people who started farming on the ancient Korean Peninsula below the 40th parallel north latitude succeeded in cultivating single-grained rice and beans for the first time in the world. As a result of the Neolithic agricultural revolution, the number of groups living in the Namhangang River and Geumgang River basins increased significantly, and some of them gradually moved to the north, where farming was possible. Those located in the east of Joha became the Ye people whose tigers were totem, and those who crossed to the west of Joha became the Mac people whose bears were totem.
Professor Shin claims that Gojoseon moved the capital to Liaodong 1,000 years later to absorb the Yejok, and expanded its territory to the east and west to build an ancient federal state spanning the Korean Peninsula, Manchuria, and Primorsky. He said, "The Korean, Ye, and Mac tribes that lead to the Korean people form the center of Gojoseon, and nomadic tribes that have been conquered and merged such as Eupru, Hunno, Dolgul, and Mongolia are located around."

It was really an unprofitable war. It was not until the Ming Dynasty that a strong navy was established. Zheng He's fleet sailed south to the Indian Ocean and even to the coast of Africa. After returning to China, he closed the country and called himself the Celestial Empire. The four seas were all barbarians.

There are many controversies about the territories including the Han Vassal kingdoms in Korean Peninsular and contemporary chinese territories north to modern Korea. Skipping over such points and just shortly focusing on what those so called Chinese kingdoms were tells a lot. Han, it could be Chinese. Let's count 1, Soo, that ruling class came from nomads not chinese(at least at that time), Tang, the same(could be, many believe). Chitan, the same. Just add Tang. Then 2. After that, Song, Ming. 2 Chinese dynasties which never could cross Korean border. Total 4 kingdoms at best(Chinese origin, Power in Chinese continent). Whatever afflicted Korea were mostly not Chinese origins. On the contrary. Han(Chinese, main tribe) people were very rarely independent...😮

Tributes are just a sign of Korea's promise not to invade China. At that time, China was in conflict with many countries at the border, from east to west, north to south, and so on, so this promise was needed. Because even if one million soldiers were mobilized in the past, all were annihilated and the country was destroyed twice.

One thing I want to point out as a Korean is that the Joseon Dynasty of Korea (late 1300s - late 1800s) wanted to pay more tributes to Ming/Qing, and the Chinese/Manchurians wanted less. This seems illogical at first glance, however, it was actually Korea that was taking the advantage out of the tributes.
Joseon did pay with luxurious goods and concubines, however, Joseon received everyday goods (e.g. rice) and chances to trade in China for return. Since select items from Joseon (e.g. Red Ginseng) were considered the best in the world, Joseon wanted more opportunities to trade in China and make profits. This explains why Joseon wanted to pay tributes more times than Ming/Qing wanted.
But why did Ming/Qing needed to take the tributes from Joseon at all, if they were actually losing money on those tributes? It is because the ruling families of Ming/Qing needed Joseon to pay tribute to them so that they can show their people they are strong and have everything under control. It proved their legitimacy to rule, since they called themselves Son of the Sky(God). This means Ming/Qing wanted it to happen once a while, not the amount Joseon wanted it to.

they don't actually need tribute. why it is explotive is tribute are basically abuse as trade without taxes and tariff, so the court lose money if the good has come in as diplomatic goods instead of trading goods... just like today, China is the biggest market in the world, if you don't have to pay tax to sell your stuff in China, you will be rich, and Chinese government would have a big hole in their revenue... and worst they have to sell the goods for you since they need money to buy goods to return as gift.

    1. China Didn't(X), Couldn't(O) conquer
Between Korea and central China lies an immense expanse of unfarmable wasteland, inhabited by numerous barbarian tribes.
Given the military technology and mobilization capabilities of the era of cold weapons, even China would have found it nearly impossible to overcome these obstacles and successfully occupy the Korean Peninsula.
If any Chinese dynasty ignored these barriers and attempted to conquer Korea, it would have inevitably weakened itself to the point of collapse.
    2. No reason to be hostile to Korea.
China was surrounded by numerous barbarian tribes.
In such a situation, antagonizing Korea, a civilization with a similar agrarian settlement structure, would have been a foolish move.
Thus, China formed an alliance with Korea, akin to a NATO-style coalition.
As a result, Korea played a crucial role in keeping the northeastern barbarians in check on behalf of China.
Evidence of this can be seen in the repeated instances where northern barbarians, before threatening mainland China, first attacked or diplomatically pressured Korea to secure the safety of their rear and flank.

That's an interesting video. I want to share with you all the historical facts. If we look at history, we can see that China has made a lot of attempts and efforts to annex the Korean Peninsula.
China destroyed Gojoseon through its strong military power during the Han Dynasty. However, there were several countries around the area that were Korea's ancestors, the Yemaek and Han(韓) Korean. Among them, Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla stood out, and they formed Korea's Three Kingdoms Period.
United China's invasion of Korea is as follows.
Goguryo-Sui War 1: China (the Sui Dynasty) launched wars against Goguryeo with 300,000 troops. However, it was defeated by Goguryeo troops, and the Sui army was wiped out. After the defeated soldiers returned, the Sui distorted and concealed in its history book that about 80 to 90 percent of its troops were killed in "Rain and Typhoon," not by Goguryeo, but later in another history book, Gudangseo, it is recorded as being defeated by Goguryeo.
"In the days of Emperor Mun, the world was strong and caused a million troops, but it was rather defeated by Goguryeo."
    -History of Tang
Goguryeo-Su War 2: The Sui Yangje invaded Goguryeo with 1,133,800. However, they were not able to advance to the Liaodong front, and Suyangje infiltrated 305,000 soldiers into Pyongyang by making an army annexe and sent tens of thousands of sailors to replenish supplies to try to capture the capital, Pyongyang. However, 40,000 sailors were brutally defeated by 500 Goguryeo commanders and 305,000 soldiers were wiped out by the Battle of Salsu.
Goguryeo-Su War 3: Hundreds of thousands of troops are mobilized. However, it has consumed so much national power in Goguryeo's expeditions that a rebellion breaks out in China. It retreated from the Sui Dynasty army, but was attacked by Goguryeo that killed tens of thousands of people.
Fourth: The Sui Dynasty finally captured one castle! However, the Sui Dynasty was on the verge of collapse and rebelled against it. The Suiyangje is captured by insurgents. Eventually, he kills himself crying, leaving a message like, "Don't touch the corpse, because I was the emperor anyway."
Goguryeo-Tang War 1: Emperor Taizong of Tang mobilized hundreds of thousands of troops. Taizong was a capable monarch. Although he paid off by capturing Goguryeo's northern castles. But he was defeated at Ansi. After returning home, Emperor Taizong of Tang demanded a history book and opened it in defiance of his servants' dissuasion. There was a record of his defeat. Emperor Taizong of Tang was angry at this and reduced the historical records.
2nd round: Emperor Gaozong of the Tang think that he cannot destroy Goguryeo by himself alone. So Tang forms an alliance with Silla, Goguryeo's enemy. Silla also accepts it because they was difficult due to Goguryeo's attacks. They promise that Silla will rule the south and Tang the north based on the Daedong River. The Tang first destroyed Baekje with Silla, and then invaded Goguryeo. However, Tang lost the Battle of Sasu and retreats with the salvation and supply of Silla's forces.
Third: An internal strife broke out in Goguryeo. The Tang and Silla invaded Goguryeo during this time, which was destroyed by the fall of its capital, Pyongyang.
Silla-Tang War: At first, Tang and Silla promised that Silla would own land south of the Daedong River, but Tang had no intention of keeping its promise. Tang send Governor to Baekje. And they even send Governo to Silla, an independent country. As a result, Silla preemptively attacks the Tang and a war breaks out. The Tang sent 200,000 troops, but the war ended in Silla's victory with the Battle of Masung and Kibeolpo.
Balhae: Balhae was founded on Goguryeo's land by proclaiming its succession. They are recognized as a nation by preventing several invasions by Tang and attacking the Shandong Peninsula of Tang.
Goryeo: Earlier Sui, Tang had one of China's greatest powers in history, but the Song Dynasty that existed during Goryeo was not as strong as they were and did not border Goryeo. Therefore, it was never close to Goryeo. Instead, the Khitan Empire, which was hostile to the Song Dynasty, invaded Goryeo. Goryeo fought back by sending 300,000 troops, but suffered a major crisis when it lost the Battle of Tongju. But with General Yang Gyu's performance, Goryeo's General Kang Gam-chan used hundreds of thousands of troops to annihilate the Khitan's 100,000 elite fighters during War III. This led to a call from within the Song Dynasty for establishing friendly relations with Goryeo to fight the Khitan.
And with this, the dynasty of Han Chinese no longer wanted to annex Korea. After so many battles, Korea was able to remain a separate country from China. Imagine you are a Han Chinese emperor. You want to attack the Korean Peninsula. You declare that you will mobilize hundreds of thousands of troops. Then your servants will say in opposition, "Your Majesty, read the History Book. If we launch an invasion, our damage will be severe, too."

If you simply draw such a conclusion after watching this video, then you are misled! The history of China and the Korean Peninsula is not just a history of annexation, but more of it is about defending the Korean Peninsula! Let me tell you, in 663 AD, the Tang Dynasty of China sent troops and united with Silla to defeat the Japanese invasion! In 1592 and 1597 AD, the Ming Dynasty sent troops to unite with the Kingdom of Chosun and once again defeated the Japanese invasion of the Korean Peninsula! In 1895, the Qing Dynasty failed in the war to defend Korea again! In 1910, the Kingdom of Korea was annexed by Japan and began colonial rule! Since the Tang Dynasty, China has hardly invaded the Korean Peninsula dynasty, and basically maintained a tributary relationship! Especially in the Ming and Qing dynasties, they all played the role of defenders!

@shkunwen Thank you for sharing your opinion. I understand what you want to say. But since there is an error in your argument, I will talk about it.
You view the Japanese military in the Battle of the Baek River as well as the Japanese military in the Joseon-Japan War as the same, but you are wrong. First of all, Japan in the ancient period was a relatively underdeveloped country due to the nature of its isolated region as an island, and it was not such a strong opponent for China and the countries on the Korean Peninsula. You may have said that the Korean Peninsula was in crisis due to the Battle of the Baek River, but it is not true. Rather, Japan and the Baekje Revival Army were inferior and were easily removed by the Silla and Tang Dynasty. Japan's threats were made to both countries through large-scale Japanese pirates of the period of the Northern and Southern dynasties, and the military rise after the reunification of the Sengoku period. You seem to overestimate the Japanese military during the Battle of the Baek River.
Second, in the Battle of Baek river, the Japanese military is not an invading force. The Japanese military was sent to support the Baekje Revival Army during the Battle of Baek river, which had a different purpose than Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who tried to conquer the Korea and China. At that time, Japan had a closer relationship with Baekje among the Korean Peninsula nations of Silla and Baekje. Therefore, it helped the Baekje Revival Army work. Interpreting this as an attempt by Japan to invade and annex the Korean Peninsula is like concluding that "Korea invade China" on the basis that Joseon maintained close ties with the Ming Dynasty, opposed the Qing Dynasty, and sent reinforcements to the Battle of Sarhü.

Many kingdoms in China attacked Korea, but they were defeated by Korea and the country itself disappeared. So many countries did, and so did the party. Moreover, Korea was a brother to the nomads of Central and North Asia, and Turkey, so China had to have strong military or diplomatic power enough to be ready to fight against other nomads in order to attack Korea to avoid being invaded by them. In fact, diplomacy between the two countries was so fierce that diplomats from South Korea and China were sent to the palace several times to prevent the palace from striking China's rear, and on some days, diplomats from South Korea and China accidentally visited the palace together. It is not that China did not attack Korea because it was weak, but because Korea was strong.

Korea did not protect the Korean Peninsula peacefully, but defended it with blood by fighting against China and northern powers for thousands of years. It is impossible to maintain independence through diplomacy alone without any force.
And the Khitan, Mongolia, and Jurchen (Qing) are not China. The last real war between China and Korea was against the Tang Dynasty. The last time Korea almost went to war with China was in 1388 when Goryeo dispatched an army to invade the Ming Dynasty, but the commander rebelled, destroying the Goryeo Dynasty and establishing the Joseon Dynasty.
Lastly, Goryeo's ability to defend its dynasty from the Mongols had nothing to do with supporting the Japanese invasion. When Kublai Khan was struggling for power with Ariq Buka, Goryeo sided with Kublai Khan. Kublai Khan was grateful for this and did not destroy Goryeo, but married his daughter to the king of Goryeo and maintained the Goryeo dynasty.

Korea is recognized universally as a country rather than a regional occupation. Naturally, the influential people of the world will increase the value of the Won to prevent the regional rebellion from recruiting fresh-out-of-jail gangsters from around the world (and, most importantly, to encourage the best-educated and strongest families to go to Korea to shut down the rebellion). They are trying to increase the value of their currency by having constant rebellions back-to-back. Remember, they are connected with the USA: they are VERY TOXIC, and their "revolution" was based on wanting to be wild cruel children forever, rather than on human rights, or on greed. There is a sort of "framework" to it, where rather than just a child, you need to be "children" with them actually (it's an interpersonal rather than intrapersonal thing for them to face off against the world. They're not one-man-vs-the-world. They're a cult which contaminates religious groups.)
I'm only saying this because I'm ethically required to. I don't have any particular disagreement with you in this matter after reading what you've said.
The real questions are: How similar were Sejong-era 'realreforms' to George Washington's or Alexander The Great's reforms? Are they less real than other reforms?
Does China believe in any concept of human rights to any degree (anything beyond making sure that Chinese people can easily learn about the Chinese government, and that Chinese people never need to do anything more than to learn about their government in order to ensure that they themselves will never need to worry about human rights ever again)?
Shouldn't China be keeping exactly as much of a distance from Korea as they currently are?
Just because someone is happy in China now, does that mean that he will DEFINITELY choose to live a perfect and peaceful life in China rather than to help others who haven't successfully managed to cross the border and inhabit the country? Don't all immigrants to China unanimously agree?

A massive cope by Chinese nationalists that they love to repeat is that Korea was a "vassal" of China and therefore a part of China. China's vassal/tribute system was symbolic and more like a diplomatic mission + trade agreement that they offered to certain countries they could not conquer or mess with (hence why Koreans don't speak Chinese even today). Basically, the vassal state would agree to recognize the Chinese emperor, pay him a small gift, and agree not to attack China.
In exchange, China would agree to pay back the vassal state significantly more than what it paid as a gift to the Emperor, and give the vassal greater access to the Chinese market for trading purposes. Korean dynasties became stinking rich by doing this. In fact, the Korean government kept negotiating to be allowed to send more tribute missions per year while the Chinese government was trying to lower the number since it was draining their wealth each time Korea sent a tribute mission.
Japan also requested to be allowed to send more tributary missions. Funny thing is, the British Empire was also a tributary state of China. So was the Dutch Empire. The Manchus who would later conquer and rule China as its last dynasty was also a tributary state of China. Basically, China's vassal system was more like a "Recognize our ruler and give him a small symbolic gift, in exchange we will pay you back many fold."

Compare Korea with other countries of the time such as China, Russia, Iran, Hungary, Afghanistan, Tangut, etc., which were all dissolved as national entities and directly incorporated into the Mongol empire. It was because of the Mongols' respect for the Koreans' fighting spirit and prospect of the fierce resistance if they did so as well as the knowledge that they wouldn't be the only ones who failed to fully subjugate them historically.

First, Liao swamp/river was difficult to invade, and deadly to retreat.
Second, Qian Shan mountain range boosted defense of Goguryeo's legendary mountain fortresses.
Third, Changbai mountain range had one chokepoint to enter the Korean peninsular.
Invaders had to break all three in 8 months, or retreat while starving, freezing, and being attacked.

We should focus on how different the tribute relationship in ancient East Asia was compared to that outside of East Asia.
This relationship is also referred to as "tribute trade (조공무역)." During that time, private trading was generally-or usually-prohibited, and the tribute relationship in ancient East Asia functioned as a form of official trade rather than a system for taxation. Interestingly, there were instances where China was reluctant to engage in the trading due to the economic burden of providing rewards that were three to five times the value of the tribute they received, while Korea actively asked for it.
Moreover, the tribute relationship was less about actual subjugation and more about aligning with the order established by a powerful state while affirming sovereignty within that framework in ancient east asia.

@@zack7259 That’s not completely correct-the concept of “China” existed long before modern nationalism. What you’re referring to is the modern concept of “Chinese” as shaped by nationalism. However, in ancient times, “Chinese” exist but it was more of a cultural concept, akin to “Rome,” distinguishing civilized people from barbarians. This cultural framework, rooted in Confucian ideology, compelled Manchu Qing emperors to claim they were Chinese. Failing to do so would have relegated them to the status of barbarians according to traditional Confucian principles.

I don't think this is what ''this guy'' personally believes, this is more like Chinese historiography.
I've read time and time again, that some dynasties, even though they controlled China and considered themselves the rulers of ''China" aren't considered truly Chinese.
I'm not Chinese, nor an historian, so there might be some very important details I'm missing, but anyway, this reply is just to show that this is not something he made up.
I think of it as if the Spanish had conquered The Inca, but instead of just being the Spanish Empire, they considered themselves successors or straight up the Inca Empire even though they weren't locals... idk, just a thought. Take it with a planet of salt.

Our understanding is different from yours, which may be caused by the lack of information. China is a geographical concept, that is, the Central Kingdom. This is more or less recognized by the surrounding countries. The emperor of the Central World is chosen by fate (the Mandate of Heaven), so there can only be one person at the same time. During the period of national division, the Mandate of Heaven was among them. After the country was unified, it was very clear where the Mandate of Heaven was, and this unified country would trace the spread of the Mandate of Heaven. It's like if the United States is divided into a and b, and b later unified a, then the United States after that will say that the country b during the period of division is the real and legitimate United States, and the unified United States now inherits from b, that is, the undivided United States-b period-the United States after unification.

The problem on why Korea was eventually taken over by the Japanese was the same as why China faced the "century of humiliation" because both failed to modernize quick enough or even bothered to.
The Korean dynasty at that time, the Joseon and the Qing were both practicing isolationism whereas Japan by the 1870s were already in a massive reform movement that saw them modernizing at a rapid pace by becoming very industrialized and militarized with newer tech from Europe and even manufacturing guns that could rival American and European quality with their battle tactics.
Whereas the Koreans and Qing China were still using swords, muskets and bows in their battlefields and worse still, zero industrialization capabilities to even touch any major powers of that time. Worse still, with Korea being a heavy tributary state to the Qing and despite heavy resistance to Qing's influence in the Korean peninsula, there's nothing they can do to reform anything as any attempt was brutally crushed. Thus when the Japanese slapped the Qing in the face, hard, during the First Sino-Japanese War, Korea was finally free from the hands of the Qing and thus in 1895 the very same year, they proclaimed independence from Qing control and with Gojong at the helm, they established the Korean Empire.
HOWEVER, at this point, it was very late like what the Qing felt. Japan at this point was already rivalling European superpowers in terms of modernization and industrialization capabilities whereas for the Koreans, it just barely started and thus with that, when Japan came slamming into the peninsula in 1905, it was easily taken over as the Imperial Japanese Army showed how much force and potential it has that the Japanese forces in the region which would later become the Kwangtung Army had just defeated Russia, a superpower that had also modernized alot in the region and even took parts of the ancestral lands of the Manchu Qings and also took over the government property of the Russians. With that show of force and the sheer lack of power to fight back the Japanese and having the same developmental capability and factors as Qing China, the Koreans just folded and accepted the Japanese terms of "co-operation" only for Japan to stab them in the back and swallowed the whole nation into its control.
