Putting together another quiver and realized I had a perfect opportunity to show an easy way to remove air bubbles from under the skin once it has been glued down. Also a little tip on how to remove those stubborn scales that don't seem to want to come off.
I really like that idea. I usually roll my finger over the skins but the use of the roller is definitely worth investigating.

Another cool idea for a bow would be to do a WEST coast bow. They were typically 44-52" long and were selfbows only drawn to half it's length or so and were bend through the handle. Just got a stave to do this kind of hoping we could do it together
I have acquired a skin from a diamond Python in Australia and want to put it on a guitar body ( it was killed by a train ) . Where can I find a tutorial to do this? it was already removed and is dry at the moment ! Thank you

I don't get the air bubbles as bad with the rawhide, but I think you're right.
I watched a video where this guy used masking tape to remove the scales . when he pulled off the tape you could see the snake skin pattern of scales on the tape so it picked a lot of them up .
What type of glue would you suggest to put a Water moccasin skin on a plastic guitar pickguard? Thanks
Hoping to apply what you're doing to fixing my rattlesnake cowboy boots I bought off Ebay. They had a small rip that got bigger as I wore them, separating the skin from the lining.
Bet duct tape would remove those scales easier than picking away :-)
Definitely, just be careful not to rip the skin if you haven't tanned it.
don't use duck tape use masking tape . Its less sticky but sticky enough to bring up the scales .
I have the English Longbow build along ready to start, just need to find a spare piece of time to get going.
So I should remove the scales from the skin?

In my experience they cause problems or just a mess later.
Cool tip. I just finished up a bow following your flat bow build along and it turned out great. I made it from mahogany with a walnut handle and overlays. I also put a fiberglass tape backing on it. Its about 50 lbs at my draw length and it shoots great. Ill get a video of it as soon as possible. Looking forward to seeing you ELB build along
What type of glue / adhesive would work best to put a snake skin on a nylon holster
I prefer "Eco-Flo: Leathercraft Glue" for all my gluing down to fabrics/leather. For solid Nylon/Kydex I would use Barge Cement glue and for wood I'd use Titebond 2 or 3 wood glue
Hi Mike! I don't know...would a little rubber roller help, when putting the skins down? A roller seems to push the glue ahead of itself and get all the air bubbles out. Just an ider! Thanks for the SHOW! Hawk.

Do u have python leather?and Is it better than other snakes leather.
russell memo bigger snakes have thicker skins so they are tougher ( very general statement there). Python scales are tiny and more plentiful, so they are a super pain in the butt to remove all of them.

What would is the advantage of removing the scales?
This my question as well.
They flake off on their own, can discolor and are supposed to potentially cause issues with the skin underneath. I always remove them so I cannot speak from experience, but this is just why I was taught to remove the scales.

Hey brother I have a small question, what coating do you use on an edge of a rattlesnake skin glued to wood ?
Sometimes, if I am sealing the bow with polyurethane, then I won't use anything, especially if I don't get any lifts. If I do seal the edges, then I will use with Krazy Glue. SPECIFICALLY "Krazy" Glue. No other brand seems to work as well for me.

Just put my skin on a guitar body worked great!! Not quite wide enough to cover sides so is there a techniquie to taper edge into the wood like a rasp or file or rubber malet to flaten egde?? Thanks😎
Leonard Bunn Congrats! Yes I use a rasp or sandpaper on a block to do the edges of my bows. I show this in several of my older videos with snakeskin backed bows. Very simple technique but hard to type out. Easier if you check out some of my other videos. Lookfor the part where I back the bows with snakeskin or rawhide.
Leonard Bunn I think I misunderstood. The skin didn’t make it to the edge? Hmm, that makes for a good question. I usually add a leather to make up the difference on my quivers. Not sure about flattening.

Unless you are planning on stitching mulitple skins together, I'm thinking you need a large python skin. A reliable source of these skins can be Tandy Leather and they sell for around $135.00. Then there's always Ebay. You can try to talk to some herp stores/outlets and see if there are any owners who want to save their animals for you should they expire naturally. Usually they put them in the freezer before disposing of them for their customers. If you're willing to wait you can make the leather yourself (which is what I do most of the time) for no out of pocket dollars.
You gotta learn how to work the cameras like you did with yeller bellied hides, boy.
Do you have any guides on tanning big skins like boas? I have trouble with them
I use a larger jar (pickle jar) but still just a 50/50 split of Glycerine and denatured alcohol. The only difficult part for me is the scale removal. Have started carefully using duct/gorilla tape but it can tear the skin if there are any flaws.
BoarriorBows I did a Texas rat snake with the glycerin/alcohol treatment last week. Came out great. For scale removal I just dragged the scale side across a 4 inch wide limb on a camphor laurel tree in the yard. The rough bark took the scales off in less than 10 minutes. Also the residual gunk on the underside. That tree works wonders.
What kind of glue do I need so it can stick to a colt 1911 wood grip?
I use titebond 2 & 3 to glue to a wood bow, but I know some who swear by contact cement.
Oh another thing, I have rattlesnake skin but it’s super dry what can I do so it can soften up so I can use it on wood ?

@@ElBandido_pecas I will glue mine down then apply polyurethane over them. They do not come out soft, but that's not what I am going for on a bow. On leather goods I use tanned skins, glue them down with leather craft cement and then apply neatsfoot oil over the skins to keep them soft. You are kind of in between with your needs so I'm not sure which way is best for wood grips.

Python scales are stubborn as hell. Learned that the hard way. A tip for doing snake or fish skin backings: Once the skin is glued, cured and cleaned up, take some TBII or TBIII and mix it with water until it's very diluted(watery consistency). Then get it on your finger and run it the direction of the scales(front to back). The water makes the flaps malleable and lays them down super smooth, the glue in it will make them stick that way. I've done it with python and carp and it works great.
I don't think it's shaky, I think it's never focused and it keeps trying so it is actually making me nauseus. Sir, your video has great info, but I'm hoping you would REALLY CONSIDER reshooting this WITH all the great info but without the camera ride from hell! (*I don't think it's shaky, I think it's never focused and so the camera keeps trying but it is constantly moving so - yeah - it is actually making me so nauseous I had to stop watching it and just listen. PLEASE! )

What if you want to use snake skin on belts/shoes? Do you need to prep the skin? Glue the skin on something first? Prep the area in a certain way?
Most snake skins I use are quite thin (rattlesnakes, copperheads) and will require a backing material. The large pythons may not need to be glued to something else depending on what is being made, how large the original skin was and how well the tanning process was completed.
A big pencil eraser will take scales right off go with the scales not against them use just enough pressure to pull them out of the skin and they come off like the proverbial buttah

That skin has more of the coloring of an Eastern diamondback than a Western diamondback !
